Predvođeni skladateljem i kontrabasistom Dubravkom Palanovićem, neobičnim programima - od klasike do jazza i od avangarde do rocka, nude jedinstvene glazbene izazove. Svaki koncert je novi početak, nova ideja, novi eksperiment - novi “zvučni projekt”. Eleven excellent musicians, most of them members of the Zagreb Philharmonic Orchestra, gathered in the ensemble acoustic project constitute a unique phenomenon on the Croatian music scene. Led by composer and bassist Dubravko Palanović, they offer unique musical challenges with their unusual repertoire, ranging from classical music to jazz, from the avant-garde to rock. Every concert is a new beginning, new idea, new experiment - new “acoustic project”.

Francuski skladatelj i tekstopisac HUBERT GIRAUD (1920.) započeo je karijeru kao harmonikaš u ansamblu Quintette du Hot Club de France Djanga Reinhardta i Stéphana Grappellija, a Ispod neba Pariza (Sous le ciel de Paris) na tekst Jeana Dréjaca napisao je 1951. godine. Pjesmu je u istoimenom filmu Juliena Duviviera otpjevao francuski glumac i pjevač Jean Bretonnière, a proslavila ju je najslavnija francuska “chanteuse” Edith Piaf, u čijoj je izvedbi postala “neformalna himna” grada o kojem pjeva, “grada svih zaljubljenih” - Pariza. Kultni standard Spain američki pijanist i skladatelj CHICK COREA (1941.) skladao je 1971. godine te izvorno objavio kao zadnji broj albuma Light as a Feather fusion jazz sastava Return to Forever. Corea je na albumu svirao Rhodes električni klavir, Airto Moreira bubnjeve, Flora Purim je svirala udaraljke i pjevala vokale, Stanley Clarke svirao je bas, a Joe Farrell flautu. Skladbu otvara poznata tema iz središnjeg stavka koncerta za gitaru Concierto de Aranjuez španjolskog skladatelja Joaquína Rodriga, koja se nešto ranije pojavila i na jednako kultnom albumu Sketches of Spain Gila Evansa i Milesa Davisa.

JOHANN SEBASTIAN BACH (1685.

BILL EVANS (1929. My Funny Valentine je “show tune”, naslovna pjesma broadwayskog mjuzikla Babes in Arms iz 1937. skladatelja RICHARDA RODGERSA (1902. - 1979.) i tekstopisca Lorenza Harta.

- 1935.) često nazivan i “najvećim tanguerom svih vremena” napisao je slavni tango Por una cabeza (Za dužinu konjske glave) 1935. godine. Stihovi pjesnika i dugogodišnjeg Gardelova suradnika Alfreda Le Pere govore o strastvenom kockaru koji svoju ovisnost o konjskim utrkama uspoređuje s privlačnosti žena.

- 1992.) sve “ono gore” glazba, a “ono ispod” - tango.

French composer and songwriter HUBERT GIRAUD (1920) began his career as an accordion player in the ensemble Quintette du Hot Club de France of Django Reinhardt and Stéphane Grappelli. Based on the text by Jean Dréjac, he wrote Under Paris Skies (Sous le ciel de Paris) in 1951. The song was sung in the movie of the same name by the French actor and singer Jean Bretonnière, and was made famous by the most celebrated French chanteuse Edith Piaf, whose performance turned it into the “informal anthem” of the city it sings about, “city of love” - Paris. American pianist and composer CHICK COREA (1941) composed his cult standard Spain in 1971. It was originally published as the final installment of the album Light as a Feather by the fusion jazz band Return to Forever. On the album, Corea played Rhodes electric piano, Airto Moreira drums, Flora Purim played percussions and sang the vocals, Stanley Clarke played the bass and Joe Farrell the flute. The composition opens with a recognizable theme from the middle movement of the concerto for guitar Concierto de Aranjuez by the Spanish composer Joaquín Rodrigo, which appeared somewhat earlier on an album of equal cult status - Sketches of Spain by Gil Evans and Miles Davis.

JOHANN SEBASTIAN BACH (1685 - 1750) was an ingenious German composer and organist, whose composing brought baroque music to its full maturity. He remains eternal inspiration for generations not only of classical musicians, whose preludes, toccatas and fugues were “swinged” and “bebopped” already in the 18th century. Bach’s music was accepted by numerous jazz players, and his Fugue in A Minor, BWV 947 was recorded on the album Collaboration from 1964 by the members of Modern Jazz Quartet and their Artistic Director John Lewis together with guitar player Laurindo Almeida.

EDEN AHBEZ (1908 - 1995), American musician and songwriter, hippie movement icon, is the author of the pop ballade Nature Boy from 1947, whose performance by Nat King Cole turned it into a global hit and a jazz standard ever since. The song talks of a boy who wandered the world only to discover in the end that “the greatest thing... was just to love and be loved in return”. Cole’s recording from 1948 remained at the very top of American top charts for eight weeks, and since was recorded and performed by various artists, from Frank Sinatra to David Bowie.

DUBRAVKO PALANOVIĆ (1977), bassist and composer, is the author of works performed by the Zagreb Soloists, Zagreb Philharmonic Orchestra, Salzburg Chamber Philharmonic Orchestra, Zagreb Wind Ensemble, Varaždin Chamber Orchestra, Moscow Symphony Orchestra etc. He is the founder and director of the ensemble acoustic project, for which he also composes, arranges and plays. The Prelude was originally composed for piano four hands. “Except for the beginning, which is thematically somewhat different, the composition is based on basso ostinato. The ostinato continues almost throughout the entire composition and with different variations. There is also considerable dose of flirting with jazz”. BILL EVANS (1929 - 1980) is an American jazz pianist whose impressionist harmony, inventive interpretations of jazz standards and recognizable rhythmic freedom of sang melodic lines strongly influenced whole generations of jazz musicians. He is considered one of the most influential jazz pianists post World War II. The standard Waltz for Debby was composed in 1956 when it was published on the album New Jazz Conceptions. It was taken over later on by many famous instrumental and vocal artists. The girl from the title was Evans’ niece Debby Evans.

My Funny Valentine is a show tune, the title song of the Broadway musical Babes in Arms from 1937 by composer RICHARD RODGERS (1902 - 1979) and songwriter Lorenz Hart. The famous jazz standard achieved world fame with performances by Chet Baker (1952), Frank Sinatra (1954) and Miles Davis (1956), and has appeared in over 1300 albums and performed by more than 600

performers to this day. In the musical, the heroine Billie Smith sings a song about her dear Valentino Val LaMar who has many flaws, but despite them, he is her “little, funny, imperfect Valentine”, and every day spent with him is Valentine’s Day. Greek folk theme Misirlou (Egyptian Girl) is a popular musical theme that can thank its planetary glory to the surfrock adaptation by the “king of the surf guitar”, Dick Dale, in 1962. The Beach Boys recorded Misirlou on the album Surfin’ USA in 1963 inspired by Dale’s version, making the theme a symbol of American pop culture. Since then, it was realized in hundreds of different versions. In 1994, Quentin Tarantino also used Misirlou in his hit movie Pulp Fiction. “El Mago” (“The Magician”), CARLOS GARDEL (1890 - 1935), often referred to as the “greatest tango artist of all times” wrote the famous tango Por una cabeza (By a Head of a Horse) in 1935. The lyrics by the poet and Gardel’s longtime collaborator Alfredo Le Pera speak of a passionate gambler who compares his horse-track addiction to his attraction to women. The tango has been performed in numerous versions and featured in various well-known movies such as Schindler’s List, Frida, as well as Scent of a Woman, in which Slade (Al Pacino), despite being blind, leads Donna (Gabrielle Anwar) in the cult tango scene in a New York restaurant. “Love Anthem” El día que me quieras (The Day that You Love Me) by CARLOS GARDEL is one of the most often performed and recorded tango standards, written to the lyrics of Alfredo Le

Pera. Its first recording was made on March 19, 1935 in New York for Victor, accompanied by Terig Tucci orchestra in a typical expressive performance by Gardel’s baritone. On the cover of the single is a photograph of the Puerto Rican singer and actress Rosita Moreno in Gardel’s arms; they are performing the song in a duet in the finale of the film musical of the same name by John Reinhardt, which appeared on the big screen in August 1935. The song far surpassed the borders of the tango genre, leading all the way to such performances as those by Michel Camilo and Tomatito in a duo on the album Spain Again, Plácido Domingo accompanied by Daniel Barenboim and the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra.

A New York critic once wrote that in the music of the Argentinean composer and tango bandoneon player ÁSTOR PIAZZOLLA (1921 - 1992) everything that is “up” is music, and “everything that is down” is tango. That might just be the most accurate description of Piazzolla’s Tango Nuevo. Piazzolla’s tango is no longer music meant to be danced to but “popular chamber music originating from traditional tango” (Á. Piazzolla). He wrote the composition Adiós Nonino in 1959 in New York, dedicating it to his late father. It was during his American tour that Piazzolla learned that his father Vicente, whom his children affectionately called Nonino, had suddenly passed away. It was actually an existing composition Nonino, which Piazzolla drafted while still in Paris in 1954, that was later adapted to keep the rhythmic characteristic and Argentinean melody of tango, but adding the long and sad melodic theme. Adiós Nonino exists in various instrumental arrangements, with as much as twenty of them written by Piazzolla himself.
