editorial perspective

Jammin’

R. David Bradberry, DMD

January is when the first snow came. Everyone somewhat north of Macon will know that a “blizzard” or “snowjam” blew in and essentially closed everything down in a matter of a few hours. A time lapse map from an Atlanta news station shows that the freeways in the metro area clogged up from a speed limit flow to a standstill in about an hour and a half. I was lucky in that it only took me about five hours to go seven miles or about 1.4 miles per hour. A horse and buggy would have been faster. The freeze came in so fast the pond I can see from home flash froze on the surface and the geese were left to walk on it looking for open water. Eventually they just left–too cold even for them I suppose. The same thing applied to all of our practices as well. The wind picked up, animals disappeared, snow fell, and patients were not to be seen. Our vocabulary grew to include such words as “snowpocalypse” and “snowmageddon.” February brought us Children’s Dental Health Month when we take time to educate others, perform caring service on Give Kids a Smile Day, and bring our knowledge of good dental practice to the community. Of course we also celebrate that favorite holiday for sweethearts, when Cupid flings his arrows of love and makes the world a brighter place. The Georgia Dental Association is sort of like Cupid. We sling a few loving arrows of our own. In this case I am talking about our support for a program called Delete Blood Cancer. It is a simple concept, and as straightforward as an arrow finding its course. Deletebloodcancer.org has begun a campaign to give leukemia patients a “second chance” at life. The process is easy. According to the organization’s web site, there are three easy steps to find out if you are a match

as a bone marrow donor, and talk to patients about seeing if they qualify as donors: 1. READ UP. This can be accomplished by accessing the web site deletebloodcancer.org or by reading the article on page 14. This article talks about the campaign the GDA and Delete Blood Cancer are conducting starting today to recruit potential donors. 2. SIGN UP. By filling out the simple form on the web site, you can see if you are a potential donor. You must be healthy, between the ages of 18 and 55, and at least 4’10” and over 110 pounds. 3. SWAB ON! The test is simple—open mouth, swab cheek, and mail! If you are a match, you’ll be asked to donate. That’s about all there is to it. You can become someone’s “second chance.” There are other ways to donate if you don’t meet the qualifications to give bone marrow. You can have a swab party, raise money, or get the word out. The GDA isn’t just about teeth. It is our privilege to give time and talent toward helping other organizations reach their goals in making our community healthy. We will help others find matches like the geese hunting open water. After all, it takes a village.

The Bibb County Medical Society held its President’s Party in December in Macon and presented several awards. In an unusual turn, two of the awards were presented to area dentists. Dr. James Hall and Dr. Rush Peace were each presented a 2013 Citizen of the Year Award. “Dentists play an important role in the health of the community,” said Medical Society Executive Director Dale Mathews. “Dr. Hall and Dr. Peace have for many years provided care for children with severe dental problems in our area, and the Medical Society wanted to thank them for their dedication.” Dr. Hall, a GDA past president, is a pediatric dentist. Dr. Peace is a prosthodontist. The dentists have a combined 103 years of professional experience they have shared with residents of Bibb County. Kudos to these GDA members for their medical honor.

Kudos to Dr. Colin Richman, a periodontist in Roswell (Northern District), who was recently honored by The Seattle Study Club with its Charlie English Community Education Award. Dr. Colin Richman, Michael Cohen, founder of the Seattle Study DMD. Club, recognized Dr. Richman at a recent SSC symposium by explaining that this award exemplifies the attributes of a dedicated contributor to the profession. These qualities include being a devoted teacher and an individual who derives greater satisfaction from giving rather than receiving. He noted that Dr. Richman, as the 2014 recipient of the award, is someone who impacts his chosen profession through his commitment to higher learning, teaching, and giving of his constant support and time to others in the profession of dentistry.

Rush Peace, DDS, (l) and Dr. Jim Hall, DDS, of Macon with their awards from the Bibb County Medical Society. The dentists were honored by the physician group for their work, often in hospital settings, to assist children in Central Georgia with severe dental pain.

Kudos to Dr. Hugh Flax, a dentist in Atlanta (Northern District), for being elected as an Associate Member in the American Academy of Esthetic Dentistry. With just 170 members worldwide, AAED’s members are selected Hugh Flax, for their contributions DDS. to the global dentistry marketplace. Dr. Flax was one of 11 associate members elected during the AAED’s recent 38th Annual Scientific Meeting in Washington. “It is a tremendous honor to join the AAED. All of these colleagues are inspirations to the profession, as I’ve tried to be,” says Dr. Flax, who is a Past President of the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (AACD) and founding

President of the Georgia Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry. “I am looking forward to learning and working with some of the true masters.”

SNOW MOLAR Ice Storm 2014 Many dentists were impacted by the snow and ice storms that plagued the top half of Georgia in January and February. Offices were closed, patient appointments were cancelled, and dentists and staff battled terrible traffic, broken water pipes, downed tree limbs, and general inconvenience all around. But one GDA member, Dr. Kaki Pafford of Atlanta (Northern District), managed to shrug off her snowy stress by employing some unique dental humor. Thanks to Dr. Pafford for allowing the GDA to share what happens when one dentist has a few minutes alone in a snowy backyard after the children go inside.

Thanks to Dr. Kaki Pafford for her snow molar case study, before and after obturation (with baby carrots).

SCION DENTAL Foster Care Georgia is transitioning medical coverage for all foster children, adoptive services, and select youth in the juvenile justice program, some 14,000 children, under the CMO Amerigroup of March 3, 2014. This new program is called Georgia Families 360°. The program aims for a greater emphasis on care coordination and

Page 7

establishment of medical and dental homes. As part of this transition, Scion Dental will be the administrator for the dental program. At this time there are no expected changes in covered procedures for affected children. However, dentists may see a change in reimbursement to Scion’s current fee schedules. One important component of this transition is the emphasis on establishing dental homes for affected children. Scion

is actively recruiting dentists for the Georgia Families 360° network, especially in Southeastern and Southwestern Georgia, as well as those who currently treat foster kids in the traditional Medicaid program to help maintain consistency of care for these children.

New GDA Executive Director Frank J. Capaldo Brings Track Record of Boosting Membership Numbers and Revenue to Position Look for an in-depth interview with Frank Capaldo to appear in the April 2014 GDA Action! The Georgia Dental Association is pleased to welcome Frank J. Capaldo as Executive Director. He begins work on March 3, 2014. Mr. Capaldo’s exceptional leadership has previously resulted in significant gains in membership, member engagement, and nondues revenue for the Independent Bankers Association of New York State and the National The Georgia Dental Association welcomes Frank J. Capaldo as Franchisee Association. “Frank is an outstanding Executive Director beginning leader who will ensure March 3. His years of Association leadership experience combined that Georgia Dental dentists with the capabilities of GDA Association dentists and staff will produce continue to enjoy a high positive results. caliber of member service,” said Dr. Marshall Mann, president of the Georgia Dental Association. “We are excited about combining Frank’s proven track record for success with the capabilities and enthusiasm of our GDA members, leadership, and executive office staff.” The position of GDA executive director opened on August 1, 2013, with the retirement of 35-year GDA veteran and American Dental Association Honorary Member Martha S. Phillips. Associate Executive Director Nelda Greene has served with excellence as interim executive director since Martha’s retirement and will return to her associate director duties on March 3. Mr. Capaldo previously served as President and CEO of the Independent Bankers Association of New York

State, Inc. The turn-around strategic plan he executed within the association, nicknamed “The Four Pillars,” resulted in a 48% increase in membership, 45% increase in convention attendance, 72% growth in the number of tradeshow vendors, and 26% increase in gross revenue. As Executive Director and CEO of the National Franchisee Association, Inc. (NFA) Mr. Capaldo’s strategic plan, “The 24% Solution,” boosted membership growth to a high of 93%. During his time at the NFA, Frank founded and was the first chairman of the Coalition of Franchisee Associations, Inc., an association of associations. This first-ever, successful attempt to bring together diverse groups of franchisee associations (some fierce competitors) resulted in the creation of a single advocate which spoke out convincingly on issues common to all. Frank has also served as President / CEO of the Eastern Building Material Dealers Association, and EVP / President and General Counsel of Empire Corporate FCU, the New York Credit Union League, Inc., CUC Mortgage Corporation, and the Pennsylvania Credit Union League, Inc. Frank began his career in associations as a general counsel who focused on advocacy, compliance, and policy issues. Frank never stopped advocating, but he quickly became an expert on the business side of associations. Before his association career took off, Frank spent three years as an assistant district attorney in Chester County, Pennsylvania. Frank has served on numerous not-for-profit and corporation boards and he looks forward to continuing his volunteer efforts especially with Special Olympics and the Atlanta Mission. He currently sits on the Alumni Board and the Dean’s Advisory Council at the University of Dayton School of Law. Frank earned bachelor’s degrees in Business and Sociology from Susquehanna University, a Masters in Statistical Analysis from Rutgers University, and a Juris Doctorate from the University Of Dayton School Of Law.

Current Amerigroup / Scion dental providers will not receive a new contract / addendum at this time. New providers with Amerigroup / Scion have the option of becoming a provider for all managed care Medicaid and PeachCare patients in the Amerigroup network OR they can sign a foster care only contract. Another feature of this transition is the implementation of My Health Direct, an online appointment scheduling tool. Dental providers create an account in which they identify the number and type of appointments they want to make available for Amerigroup members. These appointment times are set aside specifically for Amerigroup patients and are coordinated by Amerigroup staff. The intent of this scheduling tool is to decrease missed appointments, to help Amerigroup / Scion with patient outreach, and to coordinate follow-up care.

DENTISTS In Memoriam The GDA extends sympathy to the family and colleagues of the following individual. Thomas A. Masters, DDS, who passed away February 16 at the age of 82. He was a 1956 Emory University School of Dentistry graduate who studied endodontics at the University of Alabama. He practiced in that specialty in the Northwestern District until retiring in 1999. He was a U.S. Navy veteran and well-known barbershop quartet singer. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations sent in memory of Tom to a charity of choice.

Cobb County Dental Practice Hosts Third Annual Free Care Event

The Mansouris give credit to event sponsors KeyWorth Bank, Willeford Group, Pure Life, Henry Schein, MicroCopy, United Concordia, Colgate, and The Professional Organization Of Iranian-Americans for a successful event.

Dr. Michael Mansouri and Dr. Azita Mansouri, GDA members who practice in Marietta in the Northwestern District, report that their third annual dental care day “had [the] power to bring the strongest person to tears.” As Dr. Michael Mansouri said, “We are truly blessed to be able to bring immediate relief and joy to hundreds of people in just one day. Moments like these keep us motivated and remind us why we became dentists in the first place.” Alerted to the free day of care through announcements on Metro Atlanta media channels and on social media, potential patients began lining up hours before the practice’s doors opened on Saturday, November 15. By 4 a.m. on November 15, some 250 individuals were in line with more individuals arriving throughout the day. Volunteers were ultimately able to provide care for 192 patients valued at $98,000. Slightly more than half of the patients needed extractions, and many patients received restorative care. Kudos to the GDA member dentists who took part in the effort. Central District Dentist Receives Media Coverage for Donated Case The Macon Rescue Mission recently contacted the GDA office to praise the efforts of Dr. Shawn Scott, a Macon general den-

Among her other challenges, Natasha was burdened by facial and oral trauma caused by physical abuse. Dawn Burns, the executive director of the Mission’s Dove Center, contacted Dr. Scott to see if he could help. Dr. Scott donated his services to repair Natasha’s broken teeth. He performed extensive surgery and provided a bridge. “I am very thankful to Dr. Scott and Ms. Dawn for their help in giving my smile back,” Natasha told The Mission Bell, a publication of the Macon Rescue Mission. The young woman graduated from the Mission’s “Pattern-Changing” program in January, has secured a full-time job, and has found a place to live. Dawn Burns thanks Dr. Scott for his help in rebuilding Natasha’s self-esteem and starting her down the path to great accomplishments.

King Family Dental Care Helps Less Fortunate Dr. Charles King Sr. and Dr. Charles King Jr. of King Family Dental Care in Albany updated the GDA on the Samaritan Clinic, a volunteer-led organization in the Southwestern District that provides medical and dental services to individuals without private insurance or who may not qualify for Medicaid or Medicare. The clinic was started in 2009, and receives contributions of materials and financial support from Mt. Zion Baptist Church, Second Mt. Zion Baptist Church, and Phoebe Putney Hospital, all of Albany. “Here at King Family Dental Care, we are the doctors who provide clinic patients with dental services, said Dr. King Jr. “On a two-day per week basis, we perform preventive exams and x-rays, emergency extractions, abscess drainages, and follow-up care, all at no cost to those patients who qualify based on income. In addition, we provide patients with low-cost treatment plans for any further restorative or cosmetic work requested.” Since the clinic was established, the Albany dentists have donated their services during more than 1,600 dental encounters. Kudos to both doctors for their volunteer spirit!

GDA Members Encouraged to Take Part in Campaign to Identify Bone Marrow Donors The Georgia Dental Association is partnering with Delete Blood Cancer DKMS this spring to host a month-long, state-wide drive to help register dental patients as potential life-saving donors. GDA member offices will have the opportunity to sign up to participate in this campaign from today through April 11 via the Delete Blood Cancer web site Dental.DeleteBloodCancer.org. “We are proud to partner in this campaign in Georgia,” said Dr. Robin Reich, GDA Public Relations Committee chairwoman. “The GDA and Delete Blood Cancer are both organizations that uphold a tradition of caring and an interest in the health and wellness of Georgians. The GDA has a unique opportunity during this campaign to support the battle against blood cancer and save lives.” Oral health and overall health are

intricately linked. Georgia dentists are on the forefront of detection and prevention for a wide range of health care problems and issues. This partnership between the GDA and Delete Blood Cancer will highlight the relationship between oral health and overall health and the important role dentists play as health care providers.

How the Program Works Every GDA member is asked to visit Dental.DeleteBloodCancer.org and sign up as a participating dentist from now until April 11, 2014. Once the registration process is complete, participating offices will receive promotional materials and swab kits directly from Delete Blood Cancer to help dentists and staff educate patients on the importance of registering as a potential donor and the

donation process. The target group is healthy individuals between the ages of 18 and 55 who are at least 4’10” and weigh more than 110 pounds. Dentists and staff members and their families who meet these parameters are also encouraged to register as potential donors. From May 1 to May 31, 2014, interested patients and other individuals can fill out a Delete Blood Cancer registration form and swab the inside of their mouth onsite at participating dental offices. At the end of the month, dental offices will send back all registration forms, swabs, and unused materials. The swabs will be tested and donors will be listed on the national bone marrow donor registry. Shipping for all materials is paid for by Delete Blood Cancer. Participating dental offices can determine how best to incorporate

talking to patients about becoming registered with the Delete Blood Cancer program. This may include having literature displayed in the waiting area, having dental staff members talk to patients about the program and handing out literature, and playing a video in the waiting area or on practice computers or tablets. The registration process is simple: 1) The patient will complete a written form, and 2) The patient will self-perform a cheek swab. Delete Blood Cancer will host training sessions via conference calls and webinars to help dental offices learn about the program and integrate it into their practices. A schedule of these sessions will be announced via GDA emails and posted on the GDA web site and Facebook.com page. “The intent is for this program to be easy to implement in our offices,” said Dr. Reich. “There will be a slight learning curve as we educate staff and talk to patients, but this program can save lives. The GDA and Delete Blood Cancer are working on numerous ways to get the word out about this worthwhile program and show all of Georgia that dentists are health care professionals who really do care.”

What is Delete Blood Cancer? Delete Blood Cancer is part of the largest bone marrow donor center in the world, DKMS, operating in the U.S., Germany, Poland, Spain, and the United Kingdom. With this reach, donors have the potential to help people both in the U.S. and abroad. Delete Blood Cancer donor recruiters work with patients and families to help educate and register new potential donors around the country. Since beginning with one family’s search for a bone marrow donor, Delete Blood Cancer has registered more than 4 million donors worldwide and facilitated nearly 40,000 lifesaving transplants, but the organization is not stopping there. Every day, the group leads the fight against blood cancer by working with families, communities, and organizations to recruit more donors and provide more patients with second chances at life. On average, about 150,000 Americans are diagnosed every year with a blood cancer such as leukemia, lymphoma, or

myeloma. This does not include the number of people affected by blood diseases, such as severe forms of anemia, which call for similar treatment methods. Nearly 70 percent of patients requiring a transplant will need one from an unrelated donor and less than half of patients looking for a donor match will find one. Delete Blood Cancer is dedicated to beating these odds and saving more lives. Another part of Delete Blood Cancer’s mission is to educate and dispel the myths about bone marrow donation. There are two methods of donation. In 75 percent of cases, donations are given via the Peripheral Blood Stem Cell Donation (PBSC) method, where stem cells are collected from the donor’s blood stream. The second method requires bone marrow cells to be extracted from the backside of the pelvic bone via a thin needle. The latter is a short outpatient procedure—performed while the donor is under anesthesia—that does not require suturing or even stitches. The donor’s bone marrow is completely replenished within a few weeks.

The GDA and Delete Blood Cancer are working on numerous ways to get the word out about this worthwhile program and show all of Georgia that dentists are health care professionals who really do care. GDA ACTION MARCH 2014

GDA Business Brief Videos: Valuable Practice Guidance in Three Minutes or Less Hundreds of GDA members receive a useful member benefit twice a month in their email inbox. These dentists receive practical tips on issues such as billing in PPO plans, disciplining employees, hiring staff members, and even protecting the online reputations of their practices. The best part may be that dentists can take in all of this great information in three minutes or less. Sound like a good benefit? If you are not receiving a GDA Business Brief video twice a month, please contact the GDA office.

“Since we introduced this benefit in June 2013 the response has been very positive,” said GDA Public Relations Chair Dr. Robin Reich. “We have covered a wide range of topics, everything from marketing to third party issues to clinical issues. The value is incredible, especially since members receive these videos free of charge.” Topics addressed by the GDA Business Brief videos in 2014 include how to handle the following issues. These are just seven of the 24 topics that will be covered throughout the year: • Employee termination • Signs of internal fraud • Giveaways • Oral cancer

16

GDA ACTION MARCH 2014

• Employee warnings • Root canal therapy • Extended medical leave When the Public Relations Committee began researching the value of the educational videos in 2012, several GDA members were surveyed about topics they wanted to see the GDA address. The survey revealed that members were the most eager for information on employment law, followed by risk management information, third party guidance, regulatory compliance, record keeping, and practice management issues. The GDA has worked hard to provide videos that cover issues in all of these areas. “The Georgia Dental Association is continually searching for membership benefits that help dentists increase revenue, save money, and increase productivity,” said Dr. Reich. “These videos are a real success story in these ways.” If you want to receive the GDA Business Brief videos twice a month, contact the GDA office and provide an email address! The GDA will treat your email address with care. Call (800) 432-4357 or (404) 636-7553, or email Phyllis Willich at willich@gadental.org. There is no charge to receive the videos. The only requirement is that you be a current GDA member. Want to watch a GDA Business Brief video you viewed in the past, or want to investigate what services the videos provide? A complete library of all of the Business Briefs emailed since June 2013 is available on the GDA web site. Dentists can access the video library after logging in as a member and view each video an unlimited number of times. Please note that the videos may not be posted on personal or professional web sites or shared with non-member colleagues since they are copyrighted and are an exclusive GDA member benefit.

Somebody is Watching You (Or Your Customer Service Anyway) Charles Marshall You’re being watched, Creepy, huh? But it’s true. While you carry on your day-today activities, someone is watching you. And here’s the really scary part—that person’s opinion of you could either boost your practice or torpedo it. Recently, on a trip to speak to the chamber of commerce in Durango, Colorado, I discovered that I was in need of help. While putting on my contact lens that morning, I noticed a small rip in it that could cause me problems if I didn’t get it replaced. So, shortly after getting off a plane in Durango, I walked in the door of Advanced Eye Care with my prescription for a rare bifocal lens. I said hello to the receptionist behind the desk and described my dilemma to her. “You probably don’t have this lens, but I thought I might ask,” I said, handing her my prescription. The young lady took the piece of paper, saying, “Hmm, I’m not sure if we have that lens. Let me ask someone in the back.” After just a few moments, she re-emerged, telling me that no, they didn’t carry my prescription but could order it for me. I told her that I was in town less than 24 hours and that option wouldn’t be possible. Hearing this, she asked if I’d mind waiting just another minute to see if there was any other solution she could offer. She disappeared into the back room again and after another minute or two, came back out holding a trial lens that was close enough to what I needed to get me by. The staff waived off my attempts to pay for the lens and their service, telling me to just make sure I came back to see them sometime. But here’s the thing. They didn’t know who I was. I don’t walk around wearing a T-shirt saying, “Charles Marshall, Humorous Motivational Speaker and Customer Service Expert” on it. Most of the time I look like, well, just a regular type of guy. Coincidentally, their entire staff happened to be attending my cus-

tomer service presentation the next morning at the chamber of commerce event. When I needed a story to underline the point that you never know who you’re waiting on and what effect that interaction will have on your business, what business do you think I referred to as a stellar example of local customer service? And that’s my point. You never know who is standing in front of you. In every interaction with your customer or patient you have the opportunity to make them either a fan, or in some cases, a foe. Did you hear the story about United Airlines baggage handlers breaking musician Dave Carroll‘s guitar a while back? The story goes that he tried several times to get them to pay for the guitar to no avail, so he did what a lot of musicians would do in such a case—he wrote a song about his ordeal. In the song, “United Breaks Guitars,” he even goes so far as to name the specific customer service representative that gave him the final “no.” Then he posted a video of the song on YouTube.com. It immediately went viral with something like 5 million hits in a very short time. Dave Carroll was invited to go on several national TV shows to talk about his viral video and before long, United Airlines came calling with an offer to pay for the guitar. But it was a case of too little, too late. Dave refused their money, and kept his song and his video on YouTube. Get the point? Every day somebody is watching you. That person has the potential to become your biggest fan or your worst nightmare. Me? I like fans a lot better than foes, so I suggest treating everyone you come in contact with as if they were your best customers. And a lot of times, that’s exactly what they’ll become. © Charles Marshall. Charles Marshall is a nationally known humorous motivational speaker and author. Look at the Patient, Not the Computer Eye Contact Can Improve Patients’ Perceptions A study performed by the Journal of Participatory Medicine on interactions with patients and their physicians found that nearly 85% of patients changed or were considering changing their physician due to their medical professional’s poor communication skills. Patients want more eye contact when visiting a medical professional, and many feel that this builds doctor-patient trust. Results show that longer visits are associated with higher patient perceptions of a clinician’s empathy. Understandable—we all want more time to be heard about our medical concerns. However, based on a test between percentage of eye contact and visit length, more eye contact increases the empathy score when the visit length was short. So, dentists who are struggling with compressed schedules should consider emphasizing eye contact from the moment they first see the patient. Dentists are already at a disadvantage within many operatories considering how the patient is positioned in a chair versus how the clinician is seated. A growing use of technology in the practice can create another face-to-face barrier as clinicians’ gazes are drawn to a multitude of glowing screens containing patient information instead of to the patient. Technology in the practice should not detract from creating positive face-to-face encounters. If your patient is the “somebody” watching you as you dash from operatory to operatory, create a friend and not a foe! Make warm, sincere eye contact with the patient, not their chart or your phone or a staff member. Let them see the caring professional you are!

Four Useful Services Added to Value-Packed GDA Endorsed Provider Program Plus One ADA Service Available for Amalgam Recovery Your GDA Finance Committee reviews dozens of proposals every year from companies eager to provide their services to GDA members. The committee submits recommendations to the Board of Trustees and House of Delegates when they identify companies that promise to deliver significant value and reliability. The Board and House then make a decision on whether or not to endorse those companies. The GDA investigates every company and service carefully before bestowing a formal endorsement. The GDA also annually reviews each company and service to ensure that their standards remain high. An endorsement is not a forever thing—if a company fails to meet the expectations of GDA member dentists, that endorsement will be revoked. Over the past few months, the GDA has endorsed four companies that promise to offer great value and useful services to GDA members—UPS, Mercedes-Benz, Legal Shield, and TransWorld Systems. They join a stable of 12 other endorsed providers, including GDA subsidiary Georgia Dental Insurance Services, dedicated to making life a little easier for practicing

member dentists. Contact an endorsed provider today and tell them the GDA sent you. Please note: When you see www.gadental.org listed as the web site for a company that means a link to a web site created just for GDA members is located on the Endorsed Services page of the GDA web site. Visit www.gadental.org, click the green GDA Services button, and then select Endorsed Products from the drop down menu. You must log in as a member to view the page. Georgia Dental Insurance Services (800) 432-4357 www.gadental.org GDA subsidiary GDIS provides GDA members with a full range of insurance services and products, including data breach, major medical, disability, life, long term care, professional liability, property and casualty, and workers’ compensation. Our carriers are outstanding and our rates are competitive. GDIS works for the member dentist, not the insurance companies. Obtain a complimentary, no-obligation quote from a company created by GDA members for GDA members.

ADA Business Resources has chosen HealthFirst as its endorsed amalgam recovery service provider for ADA members. ADA members will have the exclusive benefit of significant savings, a lifetime warranty on Rebec Environmental amalgam separators, and an indemnification for wastewater pollution fines. ADA members looking for a cost-effective, reliable, environmentally friendly, turn-key solution for amalgam recovery can contact HealthFirst at (888) 963-6787 or visit www.healthfirst.com/ada. Although there has not been an official declaration that the ADA and the EPA have finalized any language as it pertains to this issue, the fact that this information has recently been provided through the ADA Business Resources clearly demonstrates that whatever final position is taken, the ADA has elected to make this resource available to all of its membership in the form of an “endorsed” company that meets all of the necessary criteria to be in compliance with regard to Amalgam Waste Recovery. GDA members are encouraged to avail themselves of the resources provided by HealthFirst, including learning more about how to properly collect and dispose of amalgam wastewater within their practices.
