TOUR LISTINGS & MAP INCLUDING ARTISTS’ STUDIOS THAT ARE OPEN YEAR-ROUND

Welcome…

to the 20 th Anniversary of Gabriola Island’s Thanksgiving Studio Tour! Over the past 20 years, Gabriola has witnessed a burst of artistic activity. The Thanksgiving Studio Tour has been instrumental in promoting and encouraging artists to share their work, and in this, its 20th year, we want to celebrate! We want to celebrate the artists—both those who’ve been part of the tour for years and those who are more recent additions who colour our daily lives. We want to celebrate the art lovers who trek around the island with map and hot apple cider in hand to visit the artists and their studios. We want to celebrate those of you who take home a piece of Gabriola art and, in turn, support the strong artistic community which makes Gabriola a beautiful place to live. We want to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the fabulous Thanksgiving Studio Tour! Make a weekend of it and join us! There is something for everyone on this 20th Tour! From woodwork and glass, to textiles and sculpture, from leatherwork to basketry, to illustration and jewellery, from painting and photography, to ceramics and mixed media. And don’t miss the Preview Gallery. It’s available throughout the weekend at the Hive Emporium. If you can’t make it to every studio you can see a piece of work from every participating artist; it’s a great overview of what our artists are up to. COVER: Gallery 401 | Jeff Molloy | Studio #48

Also, new this year is the Studio Passport! See page 34 for details.

We are the Isle of the Arts Gabriola Island is a thriving artistic community, drawing artists, art lovers, and art supporters from all around the world. As residents of the Isle of the Arts, we live in a world where cloudy paint strokes, glass stars, wooden creatures, and silver linings are with us in our day-to-day lives. We attract more artists to move here every year, and that’s resulted in Gabriola Island having the sixth highest concentration of artists in the workforce in Canada (Hills Strategies Report, 2011). Gabriola Island is also a gorgeous place, full of inspiring, natural, and artistic wonders. The people and businesses on this island work together to make it a satisfying and culturally rich place to live or visit. Check out the advertisers in these pages and on our website for your guide to the best that Gabriola has to offer.

Thursday, October 6 Tour Kick-Off Soirée

7:00 pm – 10:00 pm at Tour Central: HIVE Emporium Rub shoulders with the Tour artists outside their natural studio habitats— they’re a fun and welcoming bunch of folks. The gallery will be filled to the brim all Tour weekend with art from the Tour artists to help you choose your path! It’s a fabulous October night out on Gabriola. Start at the Preview Gallery (located at Tour Central: Hive Emporium) where work from all Tour artists will be on display. Wear comfy shoes! Slip-ons are a good idea. Watch for our flags and road signs to guide you. Keep up your strength! Stop at one of Gabriola’s restaurants or cafés for a sustaining lunch, or—if the sun’s shining—order a picnic lunch to go. The island has numerous locations for a beautiful seaside meal. New this year! Join in on the fun and complete a Studio Passport along with an evaluation form (available at the back of this brochure and at every studio). It’s your chance to win a great prize! See page 34 for details. Save some energy to attend the fun evening events! See pages 30-31 for more information! If you’re touring at a time other than Thanksgiving, be sure to check Studio opening times and call ahead, if requested. artsgabriola.ca

October Ferries to Gabriola

A radio play starring Drew Staniland and Twilight Radio Theatre’s Kathy McIntyre, Chris Jans, Tina Jones and David Botten. Written by Charlotte Cameron.

6:30 pm at Surf Lodge, 885 Berry Point Rd. October 2016 marks the 70th anniversary of iconic Canadian author Malcolm Lowry’s visit to Gabriola, the trip that inspired his posthumous novel, October Ferry to Gabriola. This existential love story, set in the 1940s, captures themes of living, loving, drinking, travel, mysticism, and literature. Cameron’s story imagines the life of Lowry and his wife Margerie Bonner, and their days at the Surf Lodge, and the ways that real life mirrors fiction. The Surf Lodge is site #35 on BC BookWorld's interactive literary map of BC. TICKETS $20 AT HIVE EMPORIUM MORE INFO: 250-247-7587  |  EMAIL: TOMCHAR1@TELUSPLANET.NET
