Plaza ‘19
Project: Commemoration & Public Space – Urban Plaza

Council Ring
By commemorating the people in Los Angeles during Corona Virus 2019, Plaza ‘19 is a place to appreciate coming together. Los Angeles suffered 35,720+ deaths due to this respiratory illness, Corona Virus is part of modern day and has shaped global culture forever. Plaza ‘19 will remember these citizens of Los Angeles that were directly affected by COVID’19. Frontline workers, high risk individuals, minorities, and the elderly were brought face to face with challenging lifestyle changes in 2020. In the year 2020, quarantine became a way a life, social interaction became limited and being outside was the source of social connection. Living through coronavirus was scary but peace was formed when the outdoors became a place of safety and tranquility.
Plaza ‘19 evokes revolutionary pride as the city of LA continues to survive through this global pandemic. Surviving through the pandemic means revolting against separation of loved ones and the embracing coming together in this public space.
Jens Jensen’s council ring concept represents harmony within nature, the council ring serves as a meeting area for conversation, dance, storytelling, poetry, etc. The circular geometry’s intention is to eliminate hierarchy, overall, the concept is evocative to King Arthurs Knights of the Roundtable.

Concept Drawings

Organic functional geometries that support the relationship of space. By having dynamic activities implemented in space, the stimulation within the site will have a positive impact. Different experiences of activity in a zone will encourage interest and development of increased activity.
Materiality

Alternation of textured concrete. Attention can be drawn by having a variety of textural concrete. The purpose of having different textures implemented in graphic concrete will intrigue viewers to understand the symbolism of Plaza ’19. The graphic concrete within the design will have a variety of textures that will story tell that the Plaza ‘19 is a revolutionary celebration.
The design consists of linear contemporary concrete seating that functions and centers throughout the geometry of the site. The imagery within the graphic concrete alternates with texturized grooves and vibrant silhouettes of wildlife leading to an inviting council ring that encourages new conversations amongst others.
