Impacting Students’ Lives
With a mission of confronting today’s issues and ideas, GableStage has played an important role in Miami’s professional theatre ecology since 1979. Starting as the Florida Shakespeare Theatre and reinventing itself in 1998 as GableStage, the company has been at the forefront of producing provocative theatre. The company’s intimate, edgy, and inspiring work has been seen by over 400,000 patrons and 250,000 students.
For decades, thousands of Miami-Dade high school students were exposed to dynamic, contemporary storytelling through GableStage’s much–lauded student matinee series. Now, after a long hiatus, GableStage, under the leadership of new producing artistic director, Bari Newport and with generous funding from the Green Family Foundation, proudly reinstates this impactful offering.
The company’s flagship in-school offering, Shakespeare-in-the-Schools, visits 20+ Miami-Dade public and private high schools each year. Using a company of emerging theatre artists, GableStage harkins back to its roots as a Shakespeare company, by performing a 50-minute adaptation of Shakespeare’s most popular classics. Each production is re-imagined in a contemporary context.
A number of dramaturgical opportunities for adult theatre goers to expand their understanding of professional theatre production are now being offered on-line and at the theatre. These efforts highlight Newport’s personal desire to inspire a life-long passion for the theatrical art form in all members of the community.

Shakespeare-in-the-Schools
For nearly a decade, GableStage has sent contemporary adaptations of Shakespeare's most classic plays to Miami-Dade public schools through the Shakespeare-in-the-Schools program. This year, the production of Twelfth Night was performed through the lens of the Haitian migration to Miami, 22 times in 19 schools spanning from Homestead to North Miami beach.
Mainstage Student Matinees
Mainstage student matinees introduce high school students to professional, high-quality theatre productions which confront today’s issues and ideas. Exposure to professional theatre nurtures compassion, self awareness, tolerance, and provides essential tools for students to become strong, influential leaders of the future.

Led by actor, Iain Batchelor and with support from the Pérez Family Foundation, 22/23 marks the pilot year of this powerful new initiative. In addition to receiving tickets to all five productions, a nominated partner high-school – with serious theatre students – will have season-long access to GableStage artists and company members. GableStage is proud to announce our 2022-23 Partner school, Coral Reef High School
