PROJECT OVERVIEW

The batting cages and equipment storage area for this field need to be upgraded for safety and function. Accessibility to this warm up area is insufficient for team use. The area is very limited and only accommodates part of a team for this important warmup area.

Narrative 1

Community Design Landscape Update at a community field.

NARRATIVE

Upgrades will include a covered cage with room for two hitters at one time. The covering is required to protect the area from frequent rains. It also provides a place of protection for players during short downpour. A walkway from the field to the cages made from either asphalt, latex, or rubber would eliminate players dulling cleats or getting muddy footwear. Two medium-sized storage buildings with built-in equipment organizers in one and field maintenance equipment in the second.

PROJECT OVERVIEW

Large backyard in southern California in need of renovation. Elements key to the desired outcome include raised vegetable and fruit gardening beds, a potential vertical herb garden, covered, lighted patio, and trees, plants or another feature to improve privacy along the back wall. Storage and a water catchment system along the side of the house. Add color to the current plants.

Narrative 2

Residential Design Backyard Re-design.

NARRATIVE

Moorpark Apricot

Sunred Nectarine

Redhaven Peach

Adding 4-5 fruit trees (apricot, peach, 2 apples) along back wall to obscure the new building behind and transplant the roses to the front yard. Because some areas only get morning sun add ferns, shade tolerant color along back and north walls, and a water feature in far back corner with adjacent seating area. A raised bed along south wall for vegetable and herb gardens will make gardening and harvest easier on the elder occupant. Recover or replace the cracked concrete on the back patio with textured concrete and install patio cover with lights and a movable shade. Install outdoor kitchen with sink, gas cooktop, prep-area, refrigerator, and bar seating on the right side of the patio adjacent to the back door. Add a living herb walls along house back wall for visual interest and for use in cooking. Refurbish existing furniture and add a gas firepit for warmth at night. Building a 12'x4' storage shed along the side of house will enable the homeowner to remove and store weather intolerant cushions and furniture when not in use.

PROJECT OVERVIEW

National Geographic would like to create a mixed-use building that provides efficient use of the space to allow for the building to not only act as its West Coast Headquarters but also to provide a public exhibit space below.

Project 1

IAD 440: Studio 5: Comprehensive Design Studio National Geographic West Coast Headquarters

DESIGN NARRATIVE

Background: National Geographic West Coast In creating the Washington, DC office National Geographic "National Geographic sought to unify employees across their forward-looking and dynamic Washington DC workplace environment to authentically represent their brand, culture and legacy." Adding a West Coast Headquarters needs to embrace the organization's brand while including a little West Coast style. The magazine has a clean, minimalistic aesthetic and the building design is influenced by this style. The magazine is continually changing its focus to reflect the changing world around us. Concept Design: Fluidity Balance, Tranquility, Adaptability Life's fluidity will always force us to balance and adapt to life's tests and disruptions to balance before returning to a tranquil state. This building should reflect what National Geographic Society has created between nature and humans by incorporating these same ideas of balance, tranquility, and flexibility not only in the layout of the building's program but also in the experience the design aesthetic provides to employees and visitors alike. Preliminary Design: Simplicity Creativity is always best inspired when not encumbered by complexity in the work environment. Clean, bright, organized, and consistent workspaces in an open environment with natural light. The exhibit area design is simple and yet offers many different configurations. The Lobby is clean, inviting, and inspired by nature. The office spaces are open but provide adequate personal space. Detailed Design: Unity Colors and styles of walls, lighting, and furniture is fairly consistent throughout and yet unexpected. While using the same colors repeatedly, this design uses them slightly differently in each area and throws in some unexpected styles in a few key places. Clean lines with employee and visitor comfort in mind drove this design to a successful completion.

9 CONCEPT

Fluidity ~ Balance, Tranquility, Adaptability Life is always moving through a state of fluidity. There will always be a sense of balance within life as well as the adaptability of life being tested with anything that disrupts the balance before returning to its tranquil state. The National Geographic Society has spent countless years in obtaining knowledge and sharing the knowledge they learn of life, thus creating their own sense of fluidity between nature and humans. This same sense of fluidity that the National Geographic Society has created between

MOOD BOARD

nature and humans will also be evident in the building by incorporating these same ideas of balance, tranquility, and flexibility not only in the layout of the building's program but also in the aesthetic design to bridge a stronger sense of fluidity between the National Geographic Society and anyone who comes in to experience it.

FREEHAND PROCESS SKETCHES

Exhibit Movable walls to allow for flexibility in the space when showcased exhibits change.

Lobby First room entered, ample seating with brand focused design and sustainable finishes.

Meeting Room Smartglass able to be opaque or clear depending on privacy needs of the meeting room.

Open Workspace Desks Modular desk systems for employees.

11 PRELIMINARY DESIGN

Fluidity, Simplicity and Unity - Both floors were designed with a simple flow in mind.

First Floor - Exhibit space is just off the lobby and the natural foot flow which can be altered by the 5 curved shaped walls takes a visitor through the exhibit and ends at the cafĂŠ with the adjacent gift shop. No dead ends or choke points exist in this flow.

Second Floor Workspace design accommodates a conference room that doesn't disrupt work force routines. Private offices are accessible but not on top of the workspace. Locating a meeting room for the team within this workspace provides a convenient space for dialog. The kitchenette is also purposely set near the conference room yet accessible to the National Geographic Team.

Lobby

Visitors and staff entering into the lobby are greeted by a beautiful deep ocean blue reception desk adjacent to a waterfall accent light. The rounded walls and natural design colors and accents support the feeling of movement in the tranquil space. The balanced simplicity of the design adds a casual elegance to the entry. Shown with the National Geographic logo, the screen behind the lobby desk may be changed for event or season specific desires.

3D RENDERINGS (2 of 2)

Exhibit

The exhibit area continues the natural color scheme in a more muted fashion to serve as a backdrop for exhibits. There is a natural flow throw the space that can be transformed simply to promote a different flow or to provide accentuation for exhibits. The tranquil setting enables the exhibits to shine while providing a balanced space that eliminates dead ends and promotes an easy flow through and around the exhibits.
