Scale And Massing

by: Too Kar Yee

A church is a public structure that hosts Christian worship sessions and other religious activities. It is designed on a scale that allows a number of people to participate in the building's activities. At the same time, several types of buildings, such as cathedrals and chapels, have nearly identical functions but differ in scale and characteristics. The main difference between church and cathedral is that cathedral is the size and the designated principal church within a diocese. Secondly, the main difference between church and chapel is their structure difference. CHURCH Size

General Design Of Lutheran Churches

DESIGN CONCEPT by: Too Kar Yee

Zion Church is a Lutheran Church. Lutheran churches were, by design, more simple and devoid of elaborate altars and statues., while comparing to Catholic cathedrals that were more extravagant, ornate, and full of statuary.

Catholic Church

Altar & Chancel

Lutheran Church

Nave & Aisle

Lutherans also believe that natural materials, rather than man-made materials, represent God's creations and that using simple, natural materials and lines results in more focused worship spaces. Lutheran churches have traditionally used natural building materials such as wood, stones, and bricks to emphasize simplicity. At the same time, the Lutheran church is composed of five design elements: The altar, the chancel, the transept, the nave and the aisle.

Architecture Style

Church architecture refers to the architecture of buildings of Christian churches. It has evolved over the two thousand years of the Christian religion, partly by innovation and partly by imitating other architectural styles as well as responding to changing beliefs, practices, and local traditions.

Zion Church

From the birth of Christianity to the present, the most significant objects of transformation for Christian architecture and design were the great churches of Byzantium, the Romanesque abbey churches, Gothic cathedrals, and Renaissance basilicas with its emphasis on harmony. From the above famous architecture style, three styles are found in the Zion Church, they are Romanesque, Gothic, and Neoclassical Styles due to the influence of the Christian religion.

Architecture Style

by: Too Kar Yee

Romanesque style Romanesque architecture was the first distinctive style to spread across Europe after the collapse of the Roman Empire during the 10th to early 13th century. The Normans were primarily responsible for the development of this style, particularly in England following the Battle of Hastings and the Norman Conquest of 1066. The Normans and Norman castles are strongly associated with Romanesque architecture, which emerged during the Medieval era. This style design style emphasizes a sense of heaviness through thick walls and few windows.

Gothic style The Gothic style was an evolution from Romanesque, it is known as pointed architecture or ogival architecture too. It started from the mid-12th century to the 16th century, particularly a style of masonry building characterized by cavernous spaces with the expanse of walls broken up by overlaid tracery. In another perspective, Gothic architecture is used as the solution to the problem of building a very tall structure while preserving as much natural light as possible to emphasize the holiness of God. Thus, the people believe this architecture style represents the power of the church by building taller walls and loftier towers.

Neoclassical style TRIANGLE PADIMENT

Neoclassical architectural style produced by the Neoclassical movement that began in the mid-18th century in Italy and France that were influenced by Renaissance interpretations of Classical architecture that is designed with Classical Greek and Roman elements. It is characterized by grandeur of scale, simplicity of geometric forms, dramatic use of columns, and a preference for blank walls.

Key architectural elements: 1.1.grandeur of scale, 2.simplicity of geometric forms, 3.Greek—especially Doric (see order)—or Roman detail, 4.dramatic use of columns, 5.preference for blank walls. 6.Triangle Padiment

Gable shape porch Zion Church has a gable shape porch at the main entrance of the building that is similar to the Church of Neoclassic style that used the simple geometric design. The porch and entrance of the building is design by using huge columns and pointed arched hammer beam with buttress to strengthen or support it, it shows the combination of the Romanesque and Gothic style.

Windows and Doors From the side elevation, we can observed that there are mostly windows rather that having a solid wall. It is due to the influence of Gothic style architecture that have the reason of allow more lights come in to the building . Despite the pointed arched shape is using the Gothic design, the design and materials of the window are using wooden louvered design, it is more convenient to get the materials during that era. Same as the door that are mostly made by timber.

Zion Church is built with simple geometrical shape with symmetrical floor plan ,the materials used are mostly concrete.

History of Brickfields

SITE CONTEXT by: Neoh Fang Yong

Brickfields, a piece of land that used to be a place for setting up of a brick industry which would spur the rebuilding of Kuala Lumpur. It was originally belongs to a Chinese Kapitan, Yap Ah Loy. In 1881, series of flood and fire swept through Kuala Lumpur. This prompted British Resident of Selangor, Frank Swettenham required buildings to be constructed from brick and tiles, to replace timber and atap. Therefore a kiln was established in Brickfields for brickmaking. because the whole area was a clay pit and good quality bricks are made from clay. Therefore, Brickfields became synonymous with good quality bricks.

15

Location of Zion Church

SITE CONTEXT by: Neoh Fang Yong

Brickfields is known as Little India as predominant with Indian enclave Furthermore, it is also tagged as a "Divine Location", as there are many religious structure. The Church, which established in July 1963 in the Brickfields, now serves all Catholics in the area. The Catholic population has grown in the last 40 years as a result of the number of housing complexes that have sprung up inside the Parish area. SITE CONTEXT by: Neoh Fang Yong

The Zion Church is located on Jalan Berhala, which was orginally known as Temple Road. It is a minor road in Brickfields and has a shape of the letter “U”, with both its ends linked back to Jalan Abdul Samad. The Zion Church sits inside the “U” shape that Jalan Berhala forms. Jalan Berhala is also a base for many other shrines and temples. Therefore, this road also became a sacred ground for the Zion Church to be built on.

Why does Zion Church's Facade facing North?

SITE CONTEXT by: Neoh Fang Yong

Consideration of facing north: 1. Front facade facing the only access road as a welcoming sign to the resident and tourist nearby 2. Jalan Sultan Abdul Samad id the only road to access the church. 3. To avoid direct sunlight shining into the altar area of the church 4. Allows cross ventilation from the west wind.

RELIGIOUS INFLUENCE by: Hilary Luk

RELIGIOUS INFLUENCE

Early Lutheran Church Architecture In the 16th and 17th centuries, Lutheran were often reclaimed as Roman Catholic spaces. They are simple to adapt because of the focus on liturgy, Word and Sacrament that Catholics and Lutherans share. In the past, the architecture was very formal in layout for liturgical churches. Lutherans did not continue to only renovating churches that were once Roman Catholic, they build new structures and reform churches.
