We believe that getting involved in activities outside of your studies allows you to get the most out of your university experience. It’s a great way to meet like-minded people and widen your social circle beyond your halls or course, continue a hobby or try something new while at the same time gaining valuable experience and skills. Many people also find that getting involved in activities is an effective and fun way to combat the stress and strain of studying. With over 40 affiliated sports clubs and 60 societies - all set up and led by students - there really is a diverse range on offer with the FXU! Activities are open to all students studying with Falmouth or Exeter. There are many ways you can get involved with volunteering and RAD (Raise & Donate) alongside your studies. If you are interested in doing something positive for your local community, feel passionately about a cause, want to volunteer with a charity or community organisation on a regular basis, or want to sign up to a one-off opportunity, we are here to offer support. We also offer plenty of opportunities for you to get involved with RAD, be it as a participant or organiser. For the latest information about FXU Activities, check out our website: www.fxu.org.uk

Societies Getting involved with a society provides endless opportunities for learning, socialising and developing life and career skills, as well as enhancing your university experience. Whether it’s a course-related society, an area of interest or something completely new, we can guarantee once you have joined in with the varied activities and events each society provides, you will never look back! You will have some unforgettable experiences and make some friends for life. If you feel we haven’t got the society for you, how about setting up your own? We will provide you with support and may be able to provide financial assistance to launch your original idea. Email your ideas to societies@fxu.org.uk or pop into the office for a chat.

Sports Sporting activities offers a release from the day-to-day stresses and strains life brings. Our sports clubs give everyone the opportunity to get involved, from high-level competitive sports through to the more casual; there is so much on offer here. Sport is a huge part of life in Cornwall - it happens naturally here! Whether it’s a quick surf before work, a horse ride across the moors, competitive rugby, football or hockey at the weekend or the more relaxed evening dance sessions, there really is something for everyone. Our students take advantage of the opportunities Cornwall provides and this is reflected in the range of student-run clubs. We also work closely with community clubs and outside providers, so if we don’t offer an activity, we usually know someone who does. Whilst at university, how about giving a new activity a try? If you feel we don’t have the club you’re looking for, you can always set up your own. We will provide you with support and may be able to provide some financial assistance to get your club off the ground. Email sports@fxu.org.uk with your ideas.

FXU Sports Bursary Scheme FXU Sports Bursaries are available for students of outstanding sporting ability who show evidence of achievement at a high level. We make every effort to support your training and performance needs. The bursaries are offered on four levels ranging from £150 - £2,000. Funding can be used towards legitimate costs incurred to train or compete in your chosen sport, including the following: • Gym membership • Travel to competitions • Physiotherapy • Competition entry fees • Essential sports equipment and clothing. To find out more and to apply check out: www.fxu.org.uk/sportsoc and click on “Sports Bursaries”.

Community Sports Club Subsidy We are keen to support student participation in community sports clubs and so we offer students a subsidy of up to £20 towards costs incurred to join and attend a community sports club (this includes membership costs and/or weekly fees). To claim the subsidy you will need to bring proof of payment - a receipt or letter from the club to us by 31st January 2016.

Volunteering People decide to volunteer for a variety of reasons: for some it provides the opportunity to give something back or make a difference to the community around them, for others it provides a chance to develop new skills or gain experience and knowledge. Regardless of the motivation, all find it thoroughly rewarding. At FXU, we can help you find a volunteer activity suited to you. We currently work with community arts projects, young people in and out of the school setting, environmental projects, conservation projects, adult social care, animal welfare, charity work and individual placements, but we are always looking to develop and broaden our range of contacts and opportunities. Volunteering is a great way to: • Encounter new challenges • Meet like-minded people • Open doors to new opportunities • Make you stand out from other graduates • And of course to have fun and see Cornwall Getting involved in volunteering can also allow you to: • Enhance your employability - it gives you valuable experience which will boost your CV • Develop skills and gain qualifications. The best thing about FXU volunteering is that you do not need to have any previous experience. FXU offers training and support in finding a volunteering placement to suit your interests and to fit around your studies and other commitments. Becoming a volunteer doesn’t mean you have to take on a huge commitment. We offer many one-off opportunities in addition to assisting students in finding regular placements.

23

Join the V Team By joining the V Team you will be able to: • Search a range of volunteering opportunities • Access various training activities • Log your volunteering hours • Evaluate the skills you have gained • Work towards a Bronze, Silver or Gold V Team Award. The award scheme is open to all students and acknowledges all of your volunteering activities, including community volunteering, sports and society committee members, voluntary FXU Executive Officer roles, Student Council members, Halls Reps and Course Reps. It’s a chance to get the support and recognition you deserve! It can also be used as a valuable tool to help you achieve your Exeter or Falmouth Award. If you would like to find out more about volunteering, you can visit: fxu.org.uk/volunteering, contact us by e-mailing volunteeringandrad@fxu.org.uk

Student-Led Volunteer Projects Student-led projects are set up and run by students, for students. They allow students to share volunteering opportunities that they are passionate about and build a community around them. Projects are free for students to join and often run regular sessions. Volunteering on a regular basis is often more valuable, as responsibility and training is gained over time. It is also great to be part of the projects development. What projects are there? • Woodlane Nursery Project • The Beach Clean Project • K9 Crusaders – dog care • Penryn Memory Café • Flicka Horse and Donkey Sanctuary • More can be found on the FXU Website Want to set up your own project? FXU is always happy to help students set up new projects, so if you have an idea, tell us about it! We can also offer some financial support to help get the project up and running. For more information, you can visit the FXU website, email volunteeringandrad@fxu.org.uk or pop into the FXU Office.

RAD RAD stands for Raise and Donate and that’s exactly what we support you to do raise money for local, national and internationally recognised charities. The only limit to what counts as a RAD event is your imagination and creativity. We host cakes sales, jail breaks, sporting events, charity challenges abroad and much, much more to offer you the best time at university whilst raising a lot of money for charity. All of these events are made to push your limits, to see how far you are willing to go for charity. Anyone can be RAD! • Rally4ShelterBox – Our signature event! A 370km, man-powered relay race around the Cornish coast in under 36 hours. • LOST – Students sign up to be “kidnapped” and taken to a secret location. Each team then has to figure out where they are, and navigate back to campus as fast as they can, completing challenges along the way. They have to do so with no money and with just a map and compass to aid them. • Jail Break - Students have 30 hours to get as far away from campus as possible with no money, relying solely on the kindness of strangers. • Challenges Abroad – e.g. Climb Mount Everest. If you’ve got what it takes to be RAD, come and let us know. We are keen to hear about any form of charity fundraising that you can dream up, however simple, weird or wacky. We will give you all the support and guidance you need to make it happen. Last year your fellow students raised over £35,000 for a whole range of worthy charities, so why not be part of the team to raise even more this year? For more information about RAD, contact the RAD Committee at FXURAD@hotmail.com , the FXU Volunteering & RAD Manager at volunteeringandrad@fxu.org.uk or pop into the FXU office at the Penryn or Falmouth Campus.

Your student voice is crucial to your university experience. One of most effective ways to bring change to your institution and to improve things for the student body is through FXU Student Voice activities. Students can effect change and have a say by voting in elections, getting involved in a campaign, feeding into meetings, putting forward your ideas, or standing for election in academic societies, SSLCs/SSLGs or Union committees and roles. There are about 300 representative roles – including at least one for every course and year group, across halls and several on the Student Council – everyone has the chance to get involved. Training, skills development, advice and accreditation is available to those who have been elected. For more information you can visit www.fxu.org.uk/studentvoice

Election of FXU Presidents & Exec Officers Each year, students democratically elect a team of student officers and a Student Voice Chair to meet the needs of our diverse student population. They are there to ensure that the student voice is heard and to make sure that the FXU is representative and openly accountable to its members. All students are directly affected by the decisions made by the elected officers and how they represent you within the university and further afield, so it’s important that you select the right person for you when you’re voting. The full-time, paid student officer positions (the FXU Presidents) are for students to undertake on graduation or as a year out of studies; the election is held in the spring term. The part-time, voluntary officer positions (the FXU Executive Officers) are for students to undertake alongside their studies, and are up for election in the autumn term. Students nominate themselves for these positions. Each current student can vote in these elections to decide who they want to represent you. For more information visit www.fxu.org.uk/elections

You can visit www.fxu.org.uk to find out about our current FXU Presidents roles and responsibilities. Further information on part-time student officers can be found at www.fxu.org.uk/studentvoice/yourparttimeofficers

FXU Student Council Members Students can also join the FXU Student Council – a group made up of students from across all areas of the student body. The Council are the main policy-makers for the Union (policy-making here being setting something formal down on a specific issue that students want), which provides evidence for FXU to campaign and carry out activities that reflect current student opinion. The Council also raise and discuss issues of all aspects of student life from accommodation to teaching, sports facilities to transport and new ideas can be put forward. A new Council is formed each autumn term for the year. Students can nominate themselves for the following positions on the Council: • Hall Rep • Student Community Housing Rep • International Student Reps • Mature Student Rep • Part-time Student Rep • Open positions Academic Reps, Exec Officers and Presidents also sit on the Council through their already elected positions. www.fxu.org.uk/studentcouncil

Academic Representation System Every course and every year group has a ‘Student Rep’, who represents the students on their course by getting feedback, signposting, advising students on academic-related issues, attending meetings to put forward the students’ point of view and feeding back to their peers any academic related news or items for discussion. FXU leads on the recruitment, training and support for Student Reps for both Falmouth and Exeter students, which is great news as it brings Student Reps into the heart of FXU, creating an even stronger Student Voice. Whilst each institution runs their course rep system slightly differently (see next page), they’re brought together under FXU and we work in partnership with the universities to develop a representation system that supports and enhances the student experience for everyone. 27

Falmouth University: Staff Student Liaison Groups (SSLG) – chaired by the Head of Subject. University of Exeter: Student Staff Liaison Committees (SSLC) – chaired by Subject Chairs, which are elected student positions. There are also university departmental meetings and other activities run by FXU where all reps can meet together. Student Reps are elected by FXU each year. If you are interested in becoming a Student Rep, you can: • Contact the FXU Rep Co-ordinator hannah.partington@fxu.org.uk • Speak to your course tutor • Or speak to the current rep(s) for your course about the role. Further information can be found on our website, including a role descriptor and handbook www.fxu.org.uk/studentreps

Have Your Say and Make A Change As well as letting your representatives know about issues you would like to be solved or improved, you can also raise them yourself at termly FXU general meetings and various open meetings and focus groups organised by FXU throughout your time at university. You can also put forward a referendum if there is something you care strongly about that you would like all students to vote on. New for this academic year is our Make a Change Tab where any student can submit an idea they would like to see happen or something they would like to change. This can be an activity, event, action, a campaign etc. If your idea gets enough support, it will be taken to the FXU Student Council to be discussed and voted on. Then FXU do it! You can submit your ideas via the website and keep an eye on new ones that come up! studentvoice@fxu.org.uk www.fxu.org.uk/studentvoice

Campaigning FXU runs its own campaigns led by Presidents, Officers and students in areas such as welfare, the environment, academic, community, equality and much more. Sometimes the campaigns are quite specific, other times more wide-reaching. See the list of campaigns you can get involved in or put forward a new one! studentvoice@fxu.org.uk www.fxu.org.uk/studentvoice/campaigns

Everyone needs a helping hand sometimes. Luckily FXU is here! No matter what the issue, we strive to provide the best assistance we can for you. There are a number of different services within FXU and the support and welfare services on both campuses. Within the FXU team we have a group of advisers who can advise you on all kinds of problems, such as money, housing, benefits, academic appeals and more. Beyond that we have strong links with Student Support Services, which includes counselling, living support, dyslexia support, accessibility, accommodation and more. They can help with a range of welfare queries including student funding, benefits, financial problems, housing queries, consumer advice, employment, institutional/academic related problems and more. felt through resolution of problems with funding from Student Finance England, as well as supporting students applying to the universities’ Access to Learning Funds in cases of hardship. We also help many students apply for discretionary student funding if they have to suspend their studies on health grounds, therefore enabling them to return to university when they recover. These are just some of the areas we cover. For further information visit www.fxu.org.uk/advice_welfare or please come and see us or send an email to advice@fxu.org.uk and we will be more than happy to help you with your problem, whatever it is. Freshers Freshers is probably the most memorable part of your university life and we always put on an action-packed programme. We provide a variety of activities including sports and recreation taster sessions, the Freshers Fayre and some HUGE club nights.

Student-Led Events & Projects Do you have an idea for an event or project that you think other students would want to get involved in? FXU understands that there is no better place than university to make a difference and we offer you the support to do this! We can provide advice, support and may even be able to offer you financial help to get your student-led events and projects off the ground. If you have an idea that could benefit other students, we want to help you provide that experience. In the past we have advised on and helped finance a number of different events, including an inter-society dance show, an African music and culture event, a conference called ‘Marginal Perceptions: Queer Voices in and Beyond Conventional Disciplines’ which was devised and run by our Equal Opportunities Officers as well as many more! Your first step is to come in and talk to us about your event or project. From there we can give you the advice, support and contacts you need to get going. Or, if you’re feeling ready to, why not complete our student-led event/project funding application form and send it in to us? You can download a copy from our website – just click on Sports & Societies, then resources. Funding is subject to approval; make sure you take a close look at our criteria whilst you complete the application. Get your application pack by popping into the FXU office or email presidentexperience@fxu.org.uk.

Bus Travel First Fal River (FFR) operates an inter-campus bus service on behalf of Falmouth University and the University of Exeter to cover the following core route: The core service is provided by the following buses: • U1 (Falmouth – Truro) • U2 (Redruth – Falmouth) • U3 (Direct core route service) The U1 and U2 stops at all bus stops along the route. The U3 is a direct service from Falmouth Moor to the Penryn Campus. Free Wi-Fi is available to all users of the U1 and U2 services. Below is a visual of the network. Bus timetables can be found at: www.fxplus.ac.uk/find/travel-transport/bus-travel

Fares The fare for students and staff to use the core route during the hours of operation is £1 for a single journey and is subsidised by the income from car parking. Journeys taken outside of the core route and out of term time will command the full commercial rate. An annual travel card – the Mussel Card – is available to students. This card allows unlimited travel for one year (52 weeks) on all First Bus buses in Cornwall, unlimited travel on Fal River Links ferries, unlimited travel on the Maritime Line Railway Line which runs between Falmouth and Truro and promotional offers from local attractions, shops and food and drink outlets. This Mussel Card is available at a vastly reduced cost of, currently, £450 per annum. Students can either make a one-off payment or spread the cost by paying three instalments of £150 by direct debit to coincide with their student loan payments. Please refer to our web page for further information on how to apply at www.fxplus.ac.uk/find/travel-transport/bus-travel

Train Travel First Great Western operates a regular rail link between Truro and Falmouth. The service runs from 06:00 to 23:00 with trains every half hour during the day. This service stops at Falmouth Docks, Falmouth Town, Penmere, Penryn, Perranwell and Truro. Falmouth Town station is just a four-minute walk from the Falmouth Campus and Penryn Station is just a 10-minute walk from the Penryn Campus. From Truro there are direct links to London Paddington and Edinburgh. For more affordable rates, look into purchasing a Young Persons Railcard from the National Rail or in major train stations. You can save 1/3 off most Standard Class tickets. As long as you’re in full-time education, you can apply for one of these – regardless of age. For further information please visit www.nationalrail.co.uk

Cycling The proximity of our campuses makes getting around under your own steam an easy option. You can use your bike to get to and in between campuses and to access many other local facilities, such as the beaches, which are minutes away from the Falmouth Campus. Secure cycle storage facilities are provided as well as showers and changing facilities free of charge for cyclists at both the Falmouth and Penryn Campuses. Many of the local bike shops offer discounts to students. For further information visit www.fxplus.ac.uk/find/travel-transport/cyclescheme

Walking Walking is a simple way to fit physical activity into your day; it’s cheap, reliable and helps keep you fit‌why not transform your trip to the gym into your commute to uni? Both Campuses are within easy walking distance of their respective towns.

Info Cycling, walking and public transport routes are all shown on the new Falmouth & Penryn Active Travel Map. To download the map visit: www.cornwall.gov.uk/activetravel For all campus related travel and transport information visit: www.fxplus.ac.uk/find/travel-transport

Car Parking: Glasney Student Long Stay Car Park for Residents of Glasney Village During the Week Penryn Campus provides a dedicated student car park (Glasney Student Long Stay) for those students who live on campus. This car park is located nearest to Tremough Barton Cottages. Students must apply to park in this area and space is managed on a first come, first served basis. All prospective users can apply online but will need to be issued with their IT user account information in September prior to making an application.

Please refer to the car parking pages of the Falmouth Exeter Plus website for further details: http://www.fxplus.ac.uk/find/travel-transport/parking-campus Please note that income generated from car parking is reinvested back into the bus service for all students & staff to utilise.

Car Sharing Cornwall Council’s car sharing website www.carsharecornwall.com provides a free service for passengers and drivers to link up and share car journeys. Just log on and register a journey, either a regular commute to the campus, or a one-off journey. The database will then search for a match. Car sharing is a great way to make new friends and you could save yourself hundreds of pounds a year if you make regular car sharing journeys. Click on the Cost Calculator on the car sharing website to work out how much you could be saving.
