Page 1

Welcome to FXU Activities! Your university experience is about much more then your studies and that’s why the FXU activities office has such a large variety of goings-on for you all to get involved in! Whether you prefer hockey or football, bee keeping or politics – make sure you check out all that FXU has to offer. With over 100 different clubs and societies to choose from, there’s something to suit all, regardless of whether you’re already a trained sports person or fancy starting a new hobby. There are plenty of opportunities to try your hand at volunteering and whether it’s a one off day or longer project. FXU RAD (Raise and Donate) is here to support you to put on a host of fundraising events throughout the year and the Green Fund offers the opportunity for everyone to embrace a sustainable way of living. Throughout my degree I tried out many different activities and this really helped to make my three years at uni a fantastic experience. Some of my closest friends were made through volunteering or whilst playing on the badminton courts. This directory has everything listed for you, so have a gander and definitely challenge yourself to have a go at something you’ve never done before! If you have any questions or want some advice, then come into the activities office and we’ll help you get started. Whatever you choose to spend your free time doing, make the most of your years in this amazing place and enjoy yourselves!

Volunteering People decide to volunteer for a variety of reasons: for some it provides the opportunity to give something back or make a difference to the community around them, for others it provides a chance to develop new skills or gain experience and knowledge. Regardless of the motivation, all find it thoroughly rewarding. At FXU, we can help you find a volunteer activity suited to you. We currently work with community arts projects, young people in and out of the school setting, environmental projects, conservation projects, adult social care, animal welfare, charity work and individual placements, but we are always looking to develop and broaden our range of contacts and opportunities. Volunteering is a great way to: • Encounter new challenges • Meet like-minded people • Open doors to new opportunities • Make you stand out from other graduates • And of course to have fun and see Cornwall Getting involved in volunteering can also allow you to: • Enhance your employability - it gives you valuable experience which will boost your CV • Develop skills and gain qualifications The best thing about FXU volunteering is that you do not need to have any previous experience. FXU offers training and support in finding a volunteering placement to suit your interests and to fit around your studies and other commitments. Becoming a volunteer doesn’t mean you have to take on a huge commitment. We offer many one-off opportunities in addition to assisting students in finding regular placements.

VOLUNTEER 31

Join the V Team By joining the V Team you will be able to: • Search a range of volunteering opportunities • Access various training activities • Log your volunteering hours • Evaluate the skills you have gained • Work towards a Bronze, Silver or Gold V Team Award. The award scheme is open to all students and acknowledges all of your volunteering activities, including community volunteering, sports and society committee members, voluntary FXU Executive Officer roles, Student Council members, Halls Reps and Course Reps. It’s a chance to get the support and recognition you deserve! It can also be used as a valuable tool to help you achieve your Exeter or Falmouth Award. If you would like to find out more about volunteering, you can visit fxu.org.uk/volunteering, follow us on facebook.com/fxuvolunteering, Twitter @FxuVolunteering, or contact us by e-mailing volunteeringandrad@fxu.org.uk

Student-Led Volunteer Projects Student-led projects are set up and run by students, for students. They allow students to share volunteering opportunities that they are passionate about and build a community around them. Projects are free for students to join and often run regular sessions. Volunteering on a regular basis is often more valuable, as responsibility and training is gained over time. It is also great to be part of the project’s development. Want to set up your own project? FXU is always happy to help students set up new projects, so if you have an idea, tell us about it! We may also be able to offer some financial support to help get the project up and running. For more information, you can visit the FXU website, email volunteeringandrad@fxu.org.uk or pop into the FXU Office.

RAD RAD stands for Raise and Donate and that’s exactly what we support you to do raise money for local, national and internationally recognised charities. The only limit to what counts as a RAD event is your imagination and creativity. We host cakes sales, jail breaks, sporting events, charity challenges abroad and much, much more to offer you the best time at university whilst raising a lot of money for charity. All of these events are made to push your limits, to see how far you are willing to go for charity. Anyone can be RAD! Follow us on Facebook (search for FXU RAD) and Twitter @FXU_RAD to get the latest info on what we’re up to.

40 RAD

• Rally4ShelterBox – Our signature event! A 370km, man-powered relay race around the Cornish coast in under 36 hours. • LOST – Students sign up to be “kidnapped” and taken to a secret location. Each team then has to figure out where they are, and navigate back to campus as fast as they can, completing challenges along the way. They have to do so with no money and with just a map and compass to aid them. • Jail Break - Students have 30 hours to get as far away from campus as possible with no money, relying solely on the kindness of strangers. • Challenges Abroad – e.g. Climb Mount Everest. If you’ve got what it takes to be RAD, come and let us know. We are keen to hear about any form of charity fundraising that you can dream up, however simple, weird or wacky. We will give you all the support and guidance you need to make it happen. Last year your fellow students raised over £35,000 for a whole range of worthy charities, so why not be part of the team to raise even more this year? For more information about RAD, contact the RAD Committee at FXURAD@hotmail.com , the FXU Volunteering & RAD Manager at volunteeringandrad@fxu.org.uk or pop into the FXU office at the Penryn or Falmouth Campus.

Tremough English Society (TES) is a society for both Falmouth and Exeter students from all disciplines who share an interest in literature and language in both written and spoken format. This year we plan to organise academic, vocational, and social activities throughout each term, including creative writing workshops, film screenings, talks from visiting speakers, and our annual End of Year Ball! Members will receive exclusive discounts and goodies as well as benefiting from a vibrant and active society. Please feel free to send any suggestions or questions to a member of the committee. The Chorus The Chorus is a student run and member lead choir with a focus on providing something for everyone. We sing a wide variety ranging from choir classics to more modern songs and we are always willing to try any suggestions and new genres. We were set up with a focus on a cappella music but also incorporate a more traditionally led choir set up, meaning we get to sing a wide range of styles and material. We welcome all levels of musical ability and training. It aims to allow students to network with like-minded people and allow students to develop their hobbies and confidence. We also hope to teach students about other alternative faiths that may or may not have been considered before. Contact: Samantha Wiltshire Âť wiltshire1995@hotmail.com Facebook: FXU Pagan Society
