People’s Republic of China Think back. When was the last time you had the opportunity to visit one of the “new” Seven Wonders of the World? For a lucky 25 seventh, eighth and ninth graders, the opportunity came on a summer trip to the People’s Republic of China. Chuck Maddux, sixth grade history teacher, Micheal Parker, fifth grade humanities teacher, Jackie Rains, seventh grade English teacher and Christine Spikes, middle school science consultant for Northwest ISD, led, Fallon Appleton ’13, Cooper Baird ’15, Ally Barber ’14, Mary Barber ’15, John Callaway ’14, Ellie Conway ’15, Chuck Corder ’15, Grace Cowan ’13, Lilly Cowan ’13, Devon Davis ’15, Thomas Haas ’15, Joel Horton ’15, Emily Hyde ’15, Ross Kasal ’15, Libby Kerrigan ’15, William Kleinheinz ’15, Brian McConnell ’15, Shane Markwardt ’14, Stephen Nolan ’15, Graham Pergande ’15, Morgan Pergande ’13, Sydney Phillips ’15, Ryan Pohler ’15, on a 12-day excursion through the People’s Republic of China. From Beijing to Shanghai, students had the opportunity to visit the Great Wall, Temple of Heaven and enjoy an excursion to the World Heritage Site of the life-size Terra Cotta Warriors. “This was a great opportunity for the students and teachers to learn and see the fall/WINTER 2010

extremes between the country that they live in and countries abroad,” Maddux said. Students were able to showcase their negotiating skills in the market area and in the evenings, interact in the square with thousands of people while doing Tai Chi exercises. They shared in the culture of a native family by learning how to
make Chinese dumplings and enjoyed a dumpling dinner. FWCD students also visited a local school and participated in joint activities with the students. “Students were able to share world experiences,” Maddux said. “I’ve never been more proud of them.” FALCONER
