Avril Nicol, Project Co-ordinator FVOS This year we are very excited to be celebrating the 5th year of Forth Valley Open Studios, it’s amazing to think how the event has grown since it’s inception back in 2010. We would like to give a massive thank you to all who have attended the event over the past years and offer a very warm welcome to those who are visiting for the first time. Your participation is so very much appreciated by those who make the event happen; we the organisers, and of course, the artists and makers of the Forth Valley Open Studios event. The Forth Valley area has been an ideal location to organise an event such as FVOS due to the abundance of creative local people. There is a wealth of both established and emerging artists and makers, willing to share an art experience with those who choose to come and visit our community based event. We hope visitors to the event will enjoy discovering the broad variety of interesting and inspiring studios, galleries and pop-up exhibitions. This year, we believe we have gathered a wonderful collection of participating artists and makers to make this year’s event an exciting and diverse one. This year, we are delighted to be working alongside the Macrobert Arts Centre for the first time. We would like to express our gratitude to them for hosting the showcase exhibition of FVOS participants in their wonderful exhibition space. We would also like to show our appreciation to Sterling Furniture for supporting the showcase exhibition. The contribution you have given allows for an integral part of the event to happen. Thank you. Finally, biggest thanks of all to the artists and makers of FVOS who open their doors and their art for all to see and appreciate. Truly, without you, the event could not happen. We believe the event is of great importance to the communities of the Forth Valley area, offering an opportunity to talk about and experience art. Most of all though, we aim to offer an enjoyable event for all. We hope that our 5th year is the most enjoyable yet. Have fun everybody!

Lys Hansen, Honorary Chair FVOS

Congratulations to all artists and participants who are taking part in Forth Valley Open Studios. This is our fifth year and I know that our continued success is due to the hard work and joy that goes into all studios and venues. Engaging with the community is good. The love of making art is a very special gift and it is a privilege to share it. This a very special year in Scotland, so let us celebrate our gifts and our heritage. We are delighted to be able to have our showcase exhibition at the MacRobert Arts Centre this year. This is a popular venue for those who live in the area and for other visitors from abroad. Many thanks and congratulations are due to our Project Manager, Avril Nicol and her team for their efficient and streamlined work on the brochure and website. It is good here to mention the beautiful new gallery &Collective in Bridge of Allan, and also new studios complex at Marcelle House, Marshill, Alloa. Best wishes to both. I wish all of you a successful Open Studios week and I hope that being part of the artistic community in the Forth Valley area makes you feel it is very worth while.

You are most welcome to visit the studio as I am preparing work for a major exhibition at the Lillie Gallery, Milngavie from July to September 2014. New work can be seen, and tea and art talk will be freely shared. I am an expressionist painter, but will also show and talk about my new painted wood sculptures. Sketch books and catalogues and postcards will be available.

I am a community nurse who, six years ago created an opportunity to work in Malawi. Before travelling out there a friend and I started making felted bags to raise funds for the infant home.... they sold really well! The bags are knitted or crocheted, then felted in the washing machine. On my return I brought vibrant cottons and hand carved buttons and the bags took on a different persona.

The exhibits at West Moss-side will transport you on journeys far and wide. Our three regular artists explore the theme of Journeys, and they are joined by Kate Sankey, Georgia Crook, Jill Dow and Dorothy Parker. To discover creative art, paintings, drawings and installations, just make the journey down the lane. Come and share our personal explorations expressed in a range of media and forms.

Each piece of Charmian’s work contains a journey whether literal, metaphorical or both. Her physical journeys are mostly made on foot, her eyes fixed less on the horizon than on what lies near her feet as she seeks out traces of lives lived; old utensils and rusty tools, born again as a piece of art. She frequently utilises her own handmade plant papers in her works.

Darren’s journeys have taken him around the globe in search of wildlife, and his award winning paintings display his first-hand experience and knowledge of the subject. From arctic polar bears to tropical dolphins his imagery transports the viewer to a wilder world. ‘My works reflect the animals and landscapes I’ve had the privilege to encounter, and are my attempts to share wonder of nature.’

The paintings are from Scotland, Queensland and Tasmania – A Journey. The subject is the atmosphere and mood created by light and weather in the landscape and the sky where it comes to earth; abstract and changeable, familiar yet remote. Works are in oil pastel, acrylic paint and mixed media.

I work from home on a smallholding near Thornhill, and paint part time. This past year I have been busy on the land establishing a wildflower meadow, planting hedges and looking after my fold of Highland cows. This has inspired me to work on drawings of cattle, flowers and landscapes using a variety of mediums. My studio is open throughout the year to visitors by appointment, Tel: 07887 404195.

We will be exhibiting a wide variety of work created together with students in our specialist workshops including glasswork, baskets, textiles, pottery, mosaics and felt.

Directions: Boquhapple House is ¼ mile out of Thornhill on the Aberfoyle Road (A873). The roadend is the 1st left after the 40mile/hr limits. You can see the house from the main road; go straight down track & over grid. It is the same roadend as West Moss Side.

Directions: From Stirling take A84 towards Callander. About 3/4 mile (past Safari Park on right) turn right signposted Camphill, Cuthil Brae, Campsite. Straight on over hill and cattle grid, follow road round to 2nd cattle grid.

Unique jewellery, hand crafted from wire and glass beads that have been created by some of the UK’s most talented bead artists. Our ‘Rock Pool’ range is reminiscent of the sea shore. Each bead is a work of art in its own right. Hold them up to the light and look inside! Come and choose your own beads which can be made into your design. Earrings, pendants, bracelets, watches, necklaces and more.

For the fifth year, the Font of Art Exhibition is being held in the unique atmospheric setting of St Saviour’s Church. A number of local artists come together to display their work. Textiles, crafts, cards and paintings in a variety of styles, mediums, sizes and prices can all be viewed under one roof. The mix of artists is different each year but there is always something to suit every taste.

Sara graduated with an honours degree in printed textile design from Duncan of Jordanstone in 2012. Since then she has focused on creating abstract artwork using a variety of mediums including chalk pastel, pencil, and gouache. Her inspiration derives mainly from the human form and the textural and linear marks on the body. Printed textiles and recent artwork will be on display.

& Collective Contemporary Art Gallery host a new featured artist every six weeks, their work will be exhibited within the Gallery and available to purchase along with our constantly changing selection of original hand-made art works, pieces of jewellery, ceramics, prints, glass works and contemporary crafts. In addition & Collective offer a programme of art workshops. & Collective is a collaborative project brought together by founder members and Project Coordinators of both FVOS and BofA Contemporary Arts Festival.

Jai Llewellyn‘s paintings and prints are about the process of mark making, the history of a line seen through an abstract picture of the future. Llewellyn often works between painting and printmaking, both disciplines informing each other, both focusing in on relationships, juxtapositions of old and new, growth and decay, construction and deconstruction. The result is a wonderful abstract expressionism that relies on graphic mark making and a clean use of line.

Karen Banks is a ceramic artist who expresses her love of the natural world and the vessel forms created by nature, by producing handbuilt pieces with an organic quality, marked by the elemental forces of fire and smoke – she has a particular delight for smoke firing her work. Karen’s inspirations come from the beauty in found objects. Unearthing pieces of broken ceramic particularly interests her, objects made of clay which come from the earth, returned to the earth to be discovered like a piece from some historical jigsaw.

I have a love for life and a love for art. After being run over I’ve had to adopt different techniques to make my mark. I enjoy using acrylics. I have sold work in Artlinks school leavers exhibition and the Scottish Summer Art Fair and recently finished a commission for the chairman of Forth Valley NHS. I find art therapeutic and can express my self through my paintings. Art knows no boundaries!

I make naturally beautiful handmade soap using ingredients from and inspired by nature. I use premium quality oils, butters, essential oils and herbs to create nourishing, but affordable skincare. My range includes body butters, balms and scrubs. My work is inspired by my surroundings and supported by my background in science. Come along and see my experiments with new materials.

This group are based in a studio overlooking some of Stirling’s best views.

Emma Jo designs & hand weaves contemporary tapestries - specialising in portraiture and colourful abstracts. Currently she is part of the team of weavers weaving the tapestries at Stirling Castle.

I have been working in clay for many years now, making figurative sculptures. I am now also expressing my ideas through drawing and painting. I love working with lots of colour in gouache on cotton paper or acrylics on board or canvas. My work is sometimes autobiographical, sometimes based on stories or words.

Artlink Central is well-known for its inclusive work across Forth Valley with people in prison, hospitals, schools and communities who face barriers to expressing themselves, to their health and wellbeing or to their learning. Artlink Central is celebrating 25th years. Please join us at our office to see a showcase exhibition highlighting the broad range of creative and engaging, participatory projects that we have delivered and continue to do so. The exhibition will include original work alongside a photographic archive of highlights.

I like texture and so most of my work has some form of texture in it, it maybe fabric, cogs or whatever I can find lying around. I make pictures in mixed media but I also paint in watercolours. Known also for the wired outlandish dolls I make. My work is fun and I hope interesting.

I am a self taught artist speclalising in wildlife, landscape and sporting paintings and drawings. Most of my work is in oil, acrylic and graphite. My style ranges from photo realism to impressionistic depending on the subject matter. My aim is to create a truth to nature bringing out the true character of the subject.

Directions: Take junction 7 off of M876 Haggs and turn right at mini roundabout. Drive through Banknock, take the last right into Coneypark before exiting the village. Turn fi rst left and arrive at No 16 on the left at the bottom of the street.

I’ve been printing using a pasta machine from plates made with soya milk cartons and mountboard, wooden toothpicks and pencil shavings (among other things). Also this year, bookbinding and artists bookmaking has opened up whole new horizons - constructing flutter books, concertina and accordion books. Teas and coffees with a river view. Phone to visit outwith stated hours.

Influenced by the seasons and changing light in the Scottish landscape, I create atmospheric woodland landscapes and seascapes. I work in a variety of media including pastel, mixed media, print and watercolour. I also run a wide range of art classes and workshops from Red Leaf Studio. Please see the website for the current program. Free tea and coffee will be available all week.

I paint using a mix of acrylics and oil pastels. My subject matter ranges from landscapes, harbour scenes and figurative and has a naïve quality, where my own interpretation of past places and memories evolve. Paintings vary in size and I work on a mix of canvas and board. I have a selection of original artwork, prints and cards.

Trained as an Illustrator I spend my time observing, recording and, exploring the natural world in all its colourful forms both flora and fauna. I work in oils, pastels watercolours and, sometimes, printmaking. There are lots of drawings in charcoal, pen and pencil to interest and surprise the visitor.

Hetty’s most recent work embeds natural objects in colourful resin. The designs can be backlit and/or incorporated into table tops to create unique coffee and side tables.

Julie Gracie is a photographer. She loves capturing light, shadow, nature, landscapes, colour, texture, faces and quirky images. Her work is available as cards, prints and canvases. On some of her canvases, she uses inspirational quotes to add another dimension to the image.

As well as original artworks, you will find a variety of prints & miniatures - and there’s even a little freebie for every visitor! So come browse and ponder with a cuppa and some homebaking.

I use a combination of digital photography and historic printing processes, such as cyanotype, albumen and van dyke, to create unique images. I love experimenting with natural organic materials such as flowers and feathers to make cyanotype photograms and lumen prints. I also enjoy landscape and macro photography. Come and see me at my home studio and browse with a cup of tea and homebaking.

Directions: Leave Tillicoultry on the A91 and turn left into Harviestoun Grove. Proceed up the hill and turn right into Heathwood Crescent, over the rise and you will see my parking signs, number 16 is on the right. My studio is well signposted from the A91.

Directions: From the Tillicoultry clock at Murray Square take the Dollar exit. Westbourne House is at the third entrance on the left after the roundabout. Proceed up the driveway and park. The studio is around the back of the house (follow the signs!).

Directions: At the mini- roundabout and town clock at the Dollar Road/Moss Road junction on the A91, go along Dollar Road towards Dollar. Beechwood House is the 4th driveway on the left. Head for the old Victorian hothouse and a green front door.

Alloa has an award winning gallery located within the well established, family run Watchmaker & Jewellers business of Gordon McFarlane. The shop has been trading for over five decades as McFarlanes, but can actually trace its roots back to the 1840’s through five successive owners. The Gallery area opened in 2001 and continues to host a changing programme of exhibitions run by local groups as well as ‘open exhibitions’. The exhibitions promote the work of established artists, groups and also emerging talent, the gallery is open throughout the year.

We are delighted to be able to support local artists by again making The Gallery space available for artists who are unable to open their own venues. The Gallery exhibition for FVOS 2014 opens in mid May and runs until mid July. The vast range of exhibits on display covers, contemporary and traditional artwork in acrylic, mixed media, oil, pastel & watercolour, as well as photography and prints. On the craft side there are exhibits of woodwork, glassware & jewellery, all produced within the Clackmannanshire/Forth Valley area. Free refreshments will be available for all visitors throughout open studios. We are delighted to have the following artists work on display for FVOS 2014.

Directions: The Gallery is located within Gordon R McFarlane FBHI, Watchmaker, Jeweller & Art Gallery, in the heart of Alloa town centre (41 Mill Street, Alloa, FK10 1DW), a short walk from the train station and all the main car parks (Free parking). There is also limited on street parking (including disabled parking) outside the shop/gallery.

Resonate is a not-for-profit Social Enterprise, housed in an independant mix use venue, created and run by an award winning Team of Volunteers. Stop Press : We have our first employees! Congratulations to our supporters, customers and Team in growing opportunities.

I was born and brought up in Alva. I became self-employed in 1996 after studying design and Illustration. I graduated from Clackmannan College with an HND in 1995; I also received a Wee County award for Public Art. In 2003 I started a part-time degree at Edinburgh College Art and I graduated in 2009. The stimulus for my paintings comes from a variety of sources.

Professional tapestry artist Louise invites you to come and view her work. Included, will be a series woven during a residency last year, where Louise took images of flowers and animals, from ancient tapestries, and interpreted them with her own individual style.

Directions: Resonate is located opposite Europe’s largest Glass Works, the O-I Plant. When travelling on the A907 into Alloa, at the Claremont r-a-b, turn onto Glasshouse Loan (from Stirling the 3rd exit; from Edinburgh the 2nd exit) then take the 2nd left.

Directions: My pretty white and blue semi-detached house is situated on the main A91, Stirling to St Andrews road, which runs through Alva. If you are coming from Stirling it is situated on the right hand side.
