Welcome again, along with pavilions organised by Barcelona City Council and the Government of Catalonia, which feature forward-thinking exhibitors from Barcelona and Catalonia.

The latter pavilion is also the home of the exciting Open Innovation Challenge.

The only part of the show that’s not housed inside the Fira is the ISE Sound Xperience.

This takes place in the Eventos Filmax Gran Vía cinema complex, a short walk from the exit to Hall 5. Here you can audition major manufacturers’ audio systems in full effect.

New home, new highlights With more space, dedicated Technology Zones, an extensive content offering and more opportunities to get hands-on with tech, ISE 2022 will offer an unmissable attendee experience, says Mike Blackman, managing director at Integrated Systems Events On behalf of Integrated Systems Events and its co-owning associations AVIXA and CEDIA, I’m pleased to welcome you to the Preview Edition of the ISE Daily, the show’s official newspaper.

It’s not long now until we open the doors at our new home: the Fira Barcelona Gran Vía. It’s a wonderful modern exhibition venue, with an intuitive layout; as well as moving between halls at ground level, you can also use the elevated walkway, which connects to the halls via escalators.

This year we have six Technology Zones spread over five halls, making it easier than ever for you to find the solutions you’re looking for; and to be surprised by developments you hadn’t imagined.At the Page 4 | Preview Edition ISE Daily 2022

Fira, we have more space for non-exhibition content within the halls. So our seven conferences can take place in the heart of the show, all but one on a specially designed stage in Hall 5. Also in this hall is the AV Experience Zone, offering Spanish-language sessions covering specific vertical market sectors. Hall 5 is also the home of our third major stage, inside the Projection Dome.

Elsewhere we have more specialised content in the Live Events Arena in Hall 7, and the Retail Experience and Digital Signage Boulevard in Hall 6. And in Congress Square (near the entrances to Halls 4 to 7), there’s a host of show features designed to broaden the range of companies exhibiting at ISE: our Discovery Zone, featuring start-ups and companies new to the show, is back

This year, I’m delighted that we are joining forces with IOT Solutions World Congress, which takes place in Hall 4 from 10-12 May. The new agenda for digital signage Florian Rotberg, managing director, invidis consulting

By Anne Morris The digital signage and digital outof-home (DOOH) media sector is undergoing some significant changes, not least because of growing concerns about energy use and climate change.

Florian Rotberg, managing director of invidis consulting and Digital Signage Summit conference chair, says there is now a greater consciousness around environmentally friendly, sustainable digital signage solutions that use more recyclable materials.

“In the past, end-customers never really asked about power consumption, but this has changed dramatically. More and more of them are looking at green signage solutions, and that is making a big difference. This started in the Nordics, but it’s also coming to Germany and southern Europe. We’re seeing a big change there on the demand side,” Rotberg explains.

Brands cannot live without it; they lose money if it’s not running’ He also points to other disruptive forces at play, including industry consolidation as projects become increasingly global.

“Some really big players are emerging, and what’s most interesting is that some of the first ones have been valued at over €100 million, so a lot of private equity companies have entered the market. It’s really taking off and we see dramatic changes in this drive to consolidation,” he says.

Creating connections He also sees a shift towards a more ‘connected experience’ as the previous silo-based model for pro AV is broken down. “Rather than having a touchpoint here and a touchpoint there, now it’s about looking at the customer journey and making sure it follows a story.”

Rotberg adds: “For some years, everyone was talking about omnichannel but in reality they were doing multichannel.

They optimised each channel for itself, but they never managed to connect them, to orchestrate them. Now, for the first time, the big brands are really able to offer full omnichannel concepts.”

Green signage, industry consolidation, best practice and technology trends are among the key themes being covered at the Digital Signage Summit ISE (DSS ISE). The title of the conference is ‘The New Agenda’, reflecting the broad sweep of changes that are taking place.

Rotberg acknowledges that in terms of technology trends, “we don’t know exactly what companies will be showing at ISE, in part because of the current issues in the supply chain. But in general we’ll be seeing more LED, larger LCDs (surprisingly) and software becoming more important than in the past. As hardware becomes more commoditised, the big differences are in

the software platforms and the seamless experiences that are created with them.

“Another important trend is remote management of hardware, and serviceability; that’s a really big topic,” Rotberg says. “It’s about creating the right hardware concepts so you have a robust system that doesn’t need any adhoc maintenance. And that’s important because signage is increasingly business critical. Brands cannot live without it; they lose money if it’s not running.”

All these topics and more will be discussed at DSS ISE on Wednesday 11 May (10:3014:30 CET). Rotberg notes that while visitors to ISE will see hardware and software on the show floor, “digital signage is much more than this, it’s about concepts, creating content and maintaining service. What’s on DSS 2022 to explore green signage, consolidation, best practice and more Digital Signage Summit attendees will hear from leading integrators, tech suppliers, brands and retailers throughout the event, organised in association with invidis consulting and supported by Conference Audio Partner Shure.

Green signage will be a hot topic, with Giovanni Flore, retail customer experience innovation manager at Benetton, sharing his experiences with Derek Hossack, CTO and co-founder of Waapiti, during the ‘The Future of Retail – Sustainable, Energy Efficient and Partner of the City’ session.

Elsewhere, a panel will discuss ‘New Approaches to Digital Signage Integration’ and ‘Disrupting Industry Conventions’. The Spanish market and its role as a gateway to Latin America will also be debated.

Making the smart choice Bob Snyder, editor-in-chief, Channel Media

The Smart Building Conference 2022 (SBC) will reflect the fact that “the pandemic changes the focus of almost everything, except the fact we need more smart technology in our buildings”. That’s the view of SBC content chair Bob Snyder, who reveals that automation, artificial intelligence (AI) and cybersecurity will be among the topics at the full-day event scheduled for 9 May. Produced by Integrated Systems Events, SBC has long been one of Europe’s leading high-level conferences on smart buildings.

Accelerating adoption of technologies such as the Internet of Things (IoT) and access control has been on the agenda of previous events, but there is no doubt that Covid-19 has added a vivid and urgent new dimension to developments.

‘Companies with smart buildings fared better during [the pandemic], both in terms of lockdowns and the reopenings’ “Our theme this year draws from the impact of the pandemic,” says Snyder.

Automation and remote direction got some building owners, landlords and tenants through the lockdowns, while access control, IoT and sensors helped with the reopenings. The focus shifts to indoor air quality (IAQ) as we return to smarter office buildings, while climate shifts still make energy control a critical issue.”

Security concerns Along with different aspects of automation, attendees can also expect discussion of the decisive shift away from separate, siloed systems that is increasingly prevalent in new buildings; a development that has serious security implications if not well managed. “As smart building Page 8 | Preview Edition ISE Daily 2022

moves to create fewer silos by running more and more applications over a common IT backbone, cybersecurity concerns accelerate,” he says. “You could argue it is easier to protect one IT network than a legacy of myriad OT [operational technology] and IT networks.

The vulnerabilities are enormous and a critical topic for the Smart Building Conference to discuss this year.”

Data analytics and AI have been hot topics in the built environment for several years now, and they will also be part of the programme at SBC 2022. In particular, there will be recognition of the increased integration of AI with building systems and IoT devices, which “has the potential to improve experience, increase operational efficiency and optimise space and asset utilisation. AI is likely to increase the trend towards more converged and integrated building solutions, and inspire more connected buildings,” he says.

Reflecting on the development of SBC itself, Snyder observes that it has “established

itself as a C-level speaker programme, where attendees hear about the latest trends and tools as well as industry vision. Our attendees tend to enjoy an atmosphere where they can be interactive and feel free to make contributions of their own. It’s that combination of vision, open participation and networking opportunities which delegates can expect.”

Once again, the event will be a mustattend for everyone working in the built environment, not least because that environment is changing dramatically.

“Even if you don’t intend to expand your business interests, you’ll need to learn more about what these important changes in the building will require of you. Talking about smart building is where you learn the most about all the technologies and how they come together.”

Along with the tech focus trends, Snyder adds that some operational developments – including the emerging roles of master systems integrator and chief smart building officer – will also be addressed.

Charting the future Jack Robinson, publisher, Superyacht Technology News

By Anne Morris The first Superyacht Technology Summit will be opening its doors at ISE 2022 in Barcelona on 12 May (10:3014:30 CET), introducing visitors to the very specific technology requirements of these luxury vessels and revealing what is really in demand right now.

Jack Robinson, publisher of Superyacht Technology News and founder of the Superyacht Technology Conference, is chairing the summit. He has 17 years’ experience in the superyacht industry, specifically in media and technology, and has an established reputation as an integrator and expert.

Importantly, the summit will address how the industry can benefit from, as well as educate, the companies that are at ISE.

An important element of the summit will be to look towards the future of technical management in the superyacht sector, with technology as a whole moving towards artificial intelligence (AI), automation and smart interactions. The event promises to bring together buyers, integrators and suppliers; all of them experts in the field of AV and technology.

“The superyacht industry has a lot to learn from other industry global leaders and innovations. For example, smart homes have led the way to smart superyachts,” Robinson says. “It is not a case of purely copy-and-pasting from other industries, though, as superyachts require additional finessing in the development stage.”

For example, LG rollable TV is exactly the type of technology that new owners will be looking for, he believes.

Younger demographic “One major shift in the superyacht industry over the last decade has been the change in demographic of superyacht owners. They are now younger, tech savvy and their demands are truly affecting the industry for the better, making technology work faster, more sleekly and more efficiently,” Robinson observes.

He also points to the need for the industry to improve its green credentials, noting that it has “turned a corner” here and realised that not only is ‘going green’ essential, it is better for all involved.

In terms of the development of the superyacht industry itself, it has continued to grow in the past two years despite the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Robinson notes that a standard year usually records year-on-year growth of 25%, but new-build and major refit bookings went up 45% during 2020.

Shipyards are full and demand for the very best equipment is high, he adds.

“The value of AV equipment per yacht goes from €2 million to €30 million. Every year between 100 and 150 superyachts are built, and yacht owners want the newest technology,” he highlights. With approximately 6,000 yachts bigger than 30 metres around the world, there are a lot of AV services to provide.

What’s on Superyacht Technology Summit docks at ISE 2022 New for ISE 2022, The Superyacht Technology Summit, presented by Superyacht Technology and in association with Conference Audio Partner Shure, will take place on Thursday 12 May. Key themes at the event will include integration and how to encourage greater unity among technical crew, shipyards and management companies. Sessions will cover how to be a successful company in the superyacht industry, highlighting how blue-chip companies can work well with superyacht R&D teams. The future of technical management in the industry, with technology as a whole moving towards AI, automation and smart interactions, will also be discussed.

Feargus Bryan, director at Watermark Yachts, will deliver a keynote address looking at smart yachts, cybersecurity, supply chains and the crucial issue of getting everyone working together to deliver an impeccable user experience.

He stated: “The Superyacht Technology Summit will, as well as focusing on new technologies, focus on the themes of working together, of collaboration. We all know the problems, but we have the opportunity to get people in one place who all have an interest in refreshing the future of the superyacht industry. We need to see people from across the market coming to this, so we have representation across all the industry. Not just technology businesses, but electro technical officers (ETOs), management companies, owners and captains need to see this and need to be heard, too.”

Attendees will also benefit from a series of Tech Talks, including one from Kris Hogg, European business manager

for Samsung Electronics Europe. Hogg is currently working on development of Samsung’s The Wall market across Europe and is particularly focused on the marine, super-prime residential and luxury brand verticals.

He said: “ISE is more than just a trade show, it is a whole nexus of education and training, plus priceless networking. Then, this year with the Superyacht Technology team bringing the Superyacht Technology Summit, this makes it even more interesting. The superyacht industry is not aware of some of the products that are out there that could support multiple people on-board, including the owner, guests and crew.”

Hogg will be sharing his insight into the customer journey in displays, how display screens can be used to create environments and the developments that allow them to be used differently. He will also discuss the software within display screen technology that makes systems easier to use.

Moderating sessions will be Derek Munro, who has been in the superyacht industry since 1986 as a captain and engineer. More recently he has acted as an owner’s representative for 14 newbuilds to date, including the ground-breaking 107m S/Y Black Pearl.

At the Summit his focus will be on sustainability in new-build yachts, how he works with shipyards, and how suppliers integrate with him as an owner’s representative and with the shipyards themselves. He will also discuss key trends, including sustainable power and fuels, and technology for monitoring the health of the environment on a yacht.

The Superyacht Technology Summit runs from 10:00-14:30 on Thursday 12 May in the Projection Dome in Hall 5.

Embark on a journey of discovery with a host of show floor features ISE 2022 is making the most of its spacious new home by introducing a number of demo areas, networking lounges and show features, all designed to enhance the attendee experience and offer even more opportunities to discover new technologies and make new connections.

Making its debut in Hall 6 will be the Digital Signage Boulevard. This multiapplication show floor feature will bring together a selection of the world’s leading digital signage and DooH technologies, giving attendees the opportunity to experience the state-of-the-art in action.

Also in Hall 6 is the new Retail Showcase, where visitors can explore a unique retail experience through digital signage displays, personalised shopping and automated check out solutions. The Retail Showcase will not only highlight best-in-class digital signage solutions, it will also show how to engage shoppers through sensors and retail analytics devices to deliver a truly frictionless shopping experience.

If it’s new technology you’re interested in, this area will also host the Discovery Zone, a space showcasing new companies and first-time exhibitors.

In Hall 5, the main Conference Stage is joined by a Projection Dome from projection software company VIOSO (pictured), which will host content sessions from partners as well as show 360o video. In addition, the Live Events Arena in Hall 7 is a combined stage and networking area with an adjacent Product Highlights Area.

By David Davies From inspiration about new ways in which digital technology can support learning, to information about standards programmes and opensource tools, the Digital Learning Summit is set to explore the full scope of the transformation currently occurring across education when it takes place on Wednesday 11 May (15:00-19:00 CET).

According to content chair Gill Ferrell, the overriding objective is “to illustrate the art of the possible. We want to inspire education leaders with a vision of the benefits that digital transformation can bring, and we aim to achieve this by showcasing and discussing examples that are aspirational but achievable.

Not only is there an increased demand for tools and spaces that “allow remote students to work with learners who are physically co-located,” Ferrell says, “we will also see increased use of augmented, mixed and extended reality transforming our physical surroundings into a digital canvas, embedding knowledge before our eyes.”

Among the speakers will be Maud Pols, learning specialist and project leader educational innovation at Amsterdam Business School (part of the University of Amsterdam), who will present a ‘pop up’ hybrid lecture theatre that was first configured as an emergency response Page 12 | Preview Edition ISE Daily 2022

but has since been replicated due to its success. Meanwhile, Josep Maria Ribes Bonnet, who is CIO at La Salle (Universitat Ramon Llull), will provide insight on how the university is re-envisioning its Barcelona campus as an intelligent, sustainable and connected natural space through the use of digital technology.

The rise of the digital learning ecosystem – and the role that open standards play in ensuring that digital tools work effectively together – will be another key theme.

Zoom has fast become a front runner in providing tools that support learning, and “through the power of open standards it now operates seamlessly with learning management systems and a vast range of apps for education. Ted Brodheim, Zoom’s global CIO adviser for education, will join us to share their successes, growing pains and future plans,” says Ferrell.

The Digital Learning Summit will also reflect the fact that the ‘shelf-life’ of knowledge is now decreasing. As a consequence, says Ferrell, “reskilling, upskilling and just-intime learning are needed in all industries,

and we need to be able to deliver this quickly, cost-effectively and at scale”.

To provide some insight on one of the fastest growing areas of development, the summit will feature an appearance

by Prof Fridolin Wild of the Performance Augmentation Laboratory at the Open University, UK. Ferrell explains: “Fridolin has developed AR tools that have been used in contexts ranging from furniture production and sewing machine maintenance, through to quality assurance of cars and training astronauts in a Mars surface simulator.”

It’s evidently a period of profound change for education’s relationship with technology, and, despite the challenges heralded by the pandemic, Ferrell indicates that the events of the past two years have only enhanced the value of digital learning adoption. “Some organisations were better prepared than others to make the pivot, but it brought home to everyone the importance of developing the digital capabilities of both staff and students,” she says. “The tools themselves are no longer the problem; we just need to figure out what works best in our context.”

ISE’s Digital Learning Summit, in association with Conference Audio Partner Shure, is set to spotlight hybrid environments and ‘rapid reskilling’, highlighting how the pandemic massively accelerated digital transformation within higher education.

The Stand Design Awards will once again take place at ISE 2022, culminating in a ceremony taking place in the Live Events Arena in Hall 7 on the afternoon of 12 May.

Zoom’s global CIO for education Ted Brodheim will give an inside view of the company’s success and insights into its product roadmap as it positions itself at the heart of the learning ecosystem. In addition, Maud Pols, learning specialist at Microsoft, will take a look at The New World of Education.

Other speakers include Josep Maria Ribes, director of academic affairs at La Salle, and Professor Fridolin Wild of the Performance Augmentation Laboratory at the Open University, UK. Professor Wild’s keynote will look at the role of AR in accelerating learning.

Every stand on the ISE show floor is automatically entered into the awards and is judged on-site during ISE 2022. (Any stand that has previously won an ISE Stand Design Award and whose design employs roughly the same size footprint and/or reuses approximately 50% or more of the previous winning stand is ineligible.) There are four categories: 29sqm or less, 30-69sqm, 70-249sqm and 250sqm or more. Up to 10 finalists will be selected in each category.

Finalists will be notified on the show floor and presented with a plaque on Tuesday 10 May.

The awards were created to recognise the stand design efforts of ISE exhibitors, and are independently managed

Those finalists will then be judged by an expert panel of designers and marketers who will award scores based on a specially defined set of criteria.

The new world of touring audio Stew Hume, editor, TPi

By Kevin Hilton The Live Events Summit, which takes place at ISE 2022 on Thursday 12 May (15:00-19:00 CET), will look at how this financially and culturally important sector is continuing to recover and evolve after the shock of the Covid pandemic.

Conference chair Stew Hume, editor of TPi (Total Production International) magazine, has assembled a programme covering what he sees as “arguably the four most talked about subjects within live pro audio”, which will be discussed by leading industry figures.

These are: immersive audio on tour and remote mixing; trends that are likely to influence how artists stage live shows and what audiences will hear in the future.

There will also be a deep dive into the world of virtual events and how they may be incorporated into the events of the future.

Remote mixing became vital during 2020 and 2021 because it enabled engineers to run shows from a distance, which helped live performances to take place again. “I think it opens up a lot of doors for live production and should be thought of as an extra tool rather than a simple substitution in the traditional front-of-house (FOH) set-up,” he says. “On a massive stadium tour, 50,000 people are still going to want to go and see the artist but with a sophisticated remote mixing option, a high-quality live stream could be created with top-notch audio mixed in a studio, rather than a broadcast truck.”

This, Hume adds, not only keeps down production costs but also the negative environmental impact. “Sustainability is a huge issue affecting all touring productions, but there is some interesting innovation happening within the audio sector to offset some of the impact tours have on the environment,” he comments.

“We are also seeing in-house incentives being introduced by some companies.”

Surround sound has long been used for live concerts but the new generation of immersive audio systems could, in Hume’s words, bring an end to the traditional stereo format as it is now.

“The term immersive has become something of a misnomer as people have an idea that all it means is sound will appear behind you,” he says. “But it has the ability to give every member of the audience a better live audio experience. There are artists at the cutting edge, like Björk, who are using it but others, such as Bon Iver on their last US tour, are also throwing themselves into immersive audio.”

As for networking, Hume observes that it is becoming ever-more complex and now calls for a whole new skillset from those working on the road. “What we have seen in pro audio is a move away from the rather simplistic ‘plug-in at point A and it goes to point B’ approach,” he explains. “Instead, there are very sophisticated, intuitive networked systems that require IT technicians rather than standard engineers.”

Several high-profile figures in live sound and touring have confirmed their participation in the Live Events Summit.

These include a special presentation supplied by Peter Brandt of Remote Show Productions as well as Jamie Gosney of Sonosphere for the Remote Mixing panel; Phil Kamp of Klang technologies and Chris Jones from Southby Productions will discuss Immersive Audio; and Sarah Cox of recently launched Neutral Human will join a panel exploring how virtual events shoots – from livestream shows to XR shoots – may manifest in the world of live music in 2022 and beyond.

Following the programme, students will present what they’ve learnt to their classmates and embark on industry skills training alongside their studies.

Covering the critical issues Chris Dreyfus-Gibson, vice chairman, International Critical Control Rooms Alliance

By Anne Morris As a self-confessed control room geek, Chris Dreyfus-Gibson will clearly be in his element as the content chair for the Control Rooms Summit, which tales place on 10 May (10:30-14:30 CET).

Together with Peter Prater, who was content chair for the last Control Rooms Summit in 2019, he founded the International Critical Control Rooms Alliance (ICCRA – Prater is chairman, DreyfusGibson is vice chairman). He also works for a global consultancy supporting public safety, security and justice organisations to solve their most challenging problems and keep the public safe.

In his role as consultant, Dreyfus-Gibson has specialised in critical control rooms and operational command, working with the emergency services, transport organisations, and the wider public and private sectors. Previously, he was head of the force control room at the British Transport Police.

‘Audio and visual data are the fuel of the modern control room’ Dreyfus-Gibson is therefore well placed to detect and respond to some of the biggest trends in the control room sector. Although he notes that fashions vary slightly across the different industries, common trends include dealing with digitisation – both within the control room as well as in the wider world – artificial intelligence (AI) and automation.

AI and automation are of particular significance for the sector and promise to bring some big changes in the future.

“They have the potential to impact on the type of work done by control room staff, and therefore the skills needed. As technology advances there is much more discussion around the decentralisation of control room functions to the operational front line,” Dreyfus-Gibson says.

Critical Control Room’. It will feature case studies and presentations around four key topic areas: operations, people, technology, and environment and ergonomics.

Dreyfus-Gibson observes that it is rare that organisations have the opportunity to be able to design a mission-critical asset from a blank sheet of paper. “But even if you have a seasoned control room facility and operation there are things to learn and to tweak,” he says.

He explains that the challenges encountered when designing a critical control room depend on the requirements. “Are you moving an existing operation to a new facility? Are you revamping an existing facility to move-in a new operation? Or is everything completely new? Each scenario brings a different set of challenges and considerations,” he says.

“The benefit of events like the Control Rooms Summit is that you get to hear from those who have done it before, so that you can identify the pitfalls, and adapt your design and plan based on the experience and learning of others,” he adds.

AV activity Control rooms present a significant area of activity for the AV sector, of course. “Audio and visual data are the fuel of the modern control room,” Dreyfus-Gibson says.

“Whether that data is coming from human agents in the field or from other systems, there is a need to be able to understand that data very quickly so that control room staff can take the best decisions at the right time. Key to that is AV technology of all flavours, as well as the intelligent integration of systems into a single ecosystem.”

So why should visitors to ISE 2022 attend the half-day summit? According to Dreyfus-Gibson, it provides a great opportunity to reflect on and shape your thinking on how to best approach designing a purpose-built control room.

“We are looking forward to hearing about control room trends from AVIXA, operational considerations in a smart cities, context with case studies from Singapore, the key people considerations in building a new facility, and the experience from the US of building a new public safety control room,” he explains.

On a personal level, DreyfusGibson says he is looking forward to networking with colleagues from across the control room world.

“I’m very confident that there will be some tremendous opportunities for learning and discovery. If the summit can help shape the thinking of organisations just a little bit, then we will have achieved our goal,” he says.

What’s on AI and ergonomics among key themes at Control Rooms Summit Following its successful debut at ISE 2020, Control Rooms Summit returns to ISE with a packed agenda focused on designing a new purpose-built critical control room.

These centres of excellence must continue to evolve as the world changes around them. In recent years there has been much discussion around closer collaboration and integration of city- or region-wide service providers to deliver smart or ‘safe’ cities. So, how do you go about designing a new critical control room? The summit will explore the way these facilities are changing and how the control room community must work together to deliver appropriate and outstanding new models.

Key themes to be covered include defining the scope of operations, ergonomics and human factors, and location, sizing and essential components of the facility.

ISE responds to the Innovation Challenge with ACCIÓ and Enterprise Europe Network

ISE 2022 will host a number of Special Interest Group programmes, bringing attendees from specific key vertical markets to the show. The aim is to help end-user technology buyers to meet technology vendors and solution partners.

Special Interest Group visits are the result of formal agreements between ISE and a variety of associations, media partners, companies and consultants. These partners invite senior executives to visit the show and to participate in an organised ‘ISE experience’.

The programmes are tailored to meet the information needs of the visiting executives with planned stand visits, presentations, networking events and dinners.

The initiative is designed to broaden the show’s attendee base, help important groups of technology buyers to make more informed purchasing decisions, and drive sales for ISE exhibitors.

Special Interest Groups at ISE 2022 are being organised by: ACCIÓ, the Catalonian Government Agency for Business Competitiveness which provides services to 24,000 companies a year; and AV-Solution Partner, a German-speaking media technology network and one of ISE’s longest running programmes.

AV-Solution Partner offers integrated solutions for all fields of application of audiovisual media technologies; from professional consulting, conceptualisation and planning of projects, through to implementation, service, maintenance and support. Its network consists of 16 member companies based at 30 locations in the German-speaking countries.

This programme is aimed at architects, interior designers, facility managers, AV/IT decision makers in public and non-public organisations, as well as building owners.

Reshaping the workplace Bob Snyder, editor-in-chief, Channel Media

By David Davies The role of new technology in enabling the changing function of the workplace has been reflected in a number of previous editions of the Smart Building Conference (SBC). But the profound effects of the pandemic have meant that it could hardly be a more appropriate moment for a standalone event to be launched, entitled the Smart Workplace Summit (SWS).

Like SBC, the new summit is overseen by content chair Bob Snyder, who outlines some of the primary influences now shaping the workplace. “One direct result of the pandemic is ‘The Great Resignation’, where 40% of the workforce would like to change jobs, and that means most companies are now keenly aware of workplace needs,” he says. “Employees want to feel engaged, safe and empowered. Organisations must also become more nimble, more flexible, and learn to work with a hybrid workplace where not everybody can be monitored in a classic office.”

The ways in which tech vendors and systems integrators (SIs) are responding to these requirements will be a major element of this year’s SWS, which has a theme of ‘Innovations Reshaping the Workplace’. “Companies and organisations, with eyes on a returnto-office, need immediately practical and implementable advice from workplace integrators,” says Snyder. “There’s no other conference that brings together the three worlds that collide to make the smart workplace: the digital workplace of the IT industry which improves the employee experience; the encompassing workplace of facility managers which controls much of the office environment; and the workplace experiences that the audio/video industry has brought to meeting rooms, lobbies and open spaces.”

Health and hybrid Specific developments set to be explored at the summit include the inevitable post-pandemic focus on health, and the relationship that most companies have with their physical spaces. “That is going to change profoundly over the next few years, and it has huge implications for AV,” adds Snyder.

Attendees will also find out more about the “important stimulus” that the pandemic has given to the Internet of Things.

According to Snyder, the IoT “with its network of sensors, meters, and other devices and tools capable of sending and receiving data via IP has become an important part of return-to-offices”.

In terms of who is advised to consider attending SWS, Snyder indicates that every SI should be represented. “The workplace is such an important market for AV that I think every integrator should send someone to sit in on this conference,” he says. “The trade show offers the breadth, while a high-level conference adds depth. It’s also worth it to network with our audience and speakers.”

Keeping safe at ISE 2022

Running as a standalone event for the first time at ISE 2022, the Smart Workplace Summit, in association with Conference Audio Partner Shure, will explore companies’ need for technology that allows them to become more nimble and flexible.

Throughout the pandemic ISE has followed national and international health and safety guidelines, with the health and safety of exhibitors and attendees at the forefront of its plans for ISE 2022.

With eyes on returning to the office, organisations need immediately practical and implementable advice from workplace integrators. They need solutions that make their offices safe for workers and visitors, their remote workers more productive, and their employee experiences more attractive.

Spanish authorities require everyone entering the country to be either recently tested, recovered from Covid, or fully vaccinated. This protocol is controlled at the Spanish border.

Sharing their insights will be Rainer Karcher, global director IT sustainability at Siemens; Helen Hawthorn, head of solution engineering at Zoom; and Snorre Kiesbu, vice president & general manager, Webex Devices at Cisco.

ISE expects its exhibitors and attendees to also be tested, recovered, or fully vaccinated. In common with practice at other Spanish and European venues, it will not be necessary to show documented proof.

IoT and AI will be high on the agenda. As conference chair Bob Snyder explained: “Internet of Things systems generate the data which allows for complex, objective-oriented decisions that outstrip human capabilities. As AI is integrated with building systems and IoT devices, it has the potential to improve occupant experience, increase operational efficiency, and optimise space and asset utilisation.”

New beginnings David Labuskes, CTS, chief executive officer, AVIXA

By Kevin Hilton The last 24 months of the coronavirus pandemic have seen considerable change in business and life as a whole. Organisers of events such as the ISE exhibition have had to find alternative ways of making them happen, whether in restructured form for physical presentations or virtually.

‘The future of trade shows does not look like the past of trade shows’ As David Labuskes explains, even though precautions were being taken against the virus at ISE 2020, the enormity of the situation was not fully realised. “We had a fabulous show, but I don’t think anyone could have anticipated the full impact Covid would have on the world,” he says.

With the US, the UK and many other countries going into lockdown during March 2020, AVIXA cancelled the in-person InfoComm Show in Las Vegas, followed Page 20 | Preview Edition ISE Daily 2022

by other events around the world. The association then identified what Labuskes calls three primary areas of focus: “The first was my team at AVIXA, ensuring their welfare and that we had policies in place to provide them with stability and compassion, hope and understanding.

Secondly, the responsibility we couldn’t fail was to our membership. How could we best serve the needs of the pro AV industry during this time of crisis? Finally, but just as important, was the sustainability of AVIXA as a business, because without it continuing we couldn’t serve our industry.”

postponed from February to June but, Labuskes explains, due to the appearance of the Delta variant of Covid-19, the usual large-scale trade show could not take place and had to be reconfigured. The alternative was a “road tour” of smaller, regional events in Amsterdam, Munich, London and Barcelona. In the end only the last two of these took place, but Labuskes says it was still worthwhile: “I would call those ‘transitional events’. They were an opportunity for a gathering but were more a phoenix from the ashes rather than a full convening of the industry.”

Balancing act Labuskes says the three areas had to be balanced carefully because, although they are mutually beneficial, they could at times conflict with each other. “From the perspective of members’ needs we looked at how to convene the industry in this environment. That meant virtually, so within 30 days or so of cancelling InfoComm we launched InfoComm Connected, one of the first virtual trade shows of the pandemic. We learnt a lot from that, including what to do and what not to do. But what it did do was hold a place in the hearts and minds of the AV industry for a gathering. We also made all our online resources freely available.”

After the disruption experienced in 2020 and 2021, AVIXA is looking at this May for the return of ISE in its full form at the Fira Barcelona Gran Vía. But, says Labuskes, the necessity for virtual meetings during the pandemic has led to a reassessment of how a trade show should happen.

Although the hope was for physical exhibitions to return, ISE 2021 was

I don’t think the future of online engagement is 8am to 4pm, 17 webinars back-to-back with virtual booths.

It’s community in both places [on-site and online], interacting with each other.”

Setting the gold standard Daryl Friedman, CEO and president, CEDIA

By Anne Morris Daryl Friedman will have been CEO and president of CEDIA for only around six months by the time ISE 2022 opens its doors on 10 May. This means the industry veteran, who has spent more than 30 years in non-profit leadership roles, will very much be focusing on continuing to learn about the association and its members, and formulating his strategies for the years ahead.

“I’ve spent the first months of my time at CEDIA on a listening tour, meeting members and other industry stakeholders, and hearing all about their needs and challenges, what CEDIA is doing well, what we can improve on, and more,” Friedman says.

CEDIA, the global trade association for companies that design, manufacture, and integrate technology in the home, empowers members with education, certification and advocacy.

Friedman has already decided what one of his first tasks will be: “I want to embark on a major qualitative and quantitative research project with existing and prospective members to help us understand what value people see in CEDIA membership and how we can enhance that value.

Hearing first-hand from the industry will be integral in planning what’s next, new, and better for our programmes,” he says.

‘What better business to be in than home technology, which is on the cusp of an explosion?’

In terms of future plans for the association, first and foremost he wants everyone who works in the industry to appreciate the value of CEDIA. “If you’re in the home technology industry, you should want to be a CEDIA member. Secondly, I want to nurture an improved environment for our members to do business, including any legislation that the industry needs to protect its interests. Finally, I want the public to understand the need for this Page 22 | Preview Edition ISE Daily 2022

industry, and the value of certification and professionalism in the trade,” he adds.

Friedman points out that when people invite someone into their home, they want the best trained, most qualified person possible.

“We need to make sure that the general public identifies CEDIA certification as that gold standard. We also need to steward our education, training and certification programmes to produce those qualified professionals, and shore up a vibrant, diverse workforce pipeline to meet the demand for certified professionals we’re aiming to generate,” he explains.

Going for growth Friedman believes the association has an opportunity “to grow our membership exponentially”.

“The industry is blossoming,” he says.

“What better business to be in than home technology, which is on the cusp of an explosion? That means that, in addition to bringing potential members into the CEDIA community, we also have workforce development to do. Within that, we need to make a concerted effort to increase the diversity of the industry.”

He adds: “There’s also enormous potential for our education and certification programmes to grow. We want to make

sure people understand the value of using a certified integrator. Right now, many of our customers don’t even know that’s an option. We want them to think of it as a requirement.”

During ISE 2022, CEDIA is hosting an extensive professional development programme with education tracks focused on technical courses, emerging trends and business success. Attendees will also have the opportunity to take the Cabling & Infrastructure Technician (CIT) certification examination at the show for the very first time.

“This new industry certification has been designed from the ground up to meet international standards for personnel certification. As home technology services enter the mainstream, the CIT certification will be one of the markers of professionalism for the industry,” Friedman explains.

On a personal note, Friedman says much of his time at ISE will be spent meeting with members and other industry stakeholders.

“When you stop by the CEDIA booth or see me on the show floor, please introduce yourself. Along with my colleagues, I’m looking forward to connecting with as many of you as possible and listening to your views so that we can plan for an exciting future ahead,” he says.

The future vision for digital buildings Kathy Farrington, digital buildings global lead workplace design & delivery, Google

By David Davies Three years on from her first presentation at the Smart Building Conference (SBC) at ISE, addressing the topic of Internet of Things (IoT) ecosystems, Google digital buildings global lead Kathy Farrington will return to the event on 9 May for a session entitled ‘How Google has Scaled Digital Buildings Globally’.

A regular attendee of SBC since 2014, Farrington is presenting again this year, in part to discover some new perspectives.

“I have always found [SBC] a great way to network with peers in the industry and hear about the latest trends,” she says.

“It is usually a good balance between integrators and manufacturers. Also, with the tie-in to ISE, I have found it can be a slightly different audience to some of the other smart building conferences out there, which provides the opportunity to hear different perspectives.”

For her latest presentation, Farrington will share Google’s digital building vision, which entails the creation of an “open, secure and digital infrastructure that allows for any device Google adopts to be able to

As well as outlining the steps taken by Google to establish a global and scalable digital building programme, Farrington’s talk will also offer “key tips on how it was achieved, including areas such as process, policy, people and technology”.

New focus The pandemic has occurred since Farrington last discussed these topics, but although the priorities may have shifted, “the underlying approach and infrastructure” remain unaltered.

Nonetheless, she agrees that the smart building community now has a heightened awareness of health and safety issues and air quality as personnel return to shared areas. There is also a question around Page 24 | Preview Edition ISE Daily 2022

how space should be used in the new era of hybrid working. Sector-wide, there is also a growing emphasis on sustainability and the drive towards ‘net zero’, described

by Farrington as a “huge topic that has become even more important”.

While there are plenty of challenges to contend with, Farrington is confident that advances in digital buildings and the IoT will ultimately provide “the flexibility that is needed for the future of work. For example, we will need to be able to quickly change the lighting, HVAC, zones and many other aspects of space to be able to change its use, and the current method where everything is siloed and inflexible makes this almost impossible. By following a much more integrated and digital approach to buildings, this flexibility can be built in.”

Of course, the time-period of the pandemic has also witnessed a surge

in cyber attacks and associated crime, underlining the constant need to prioritise security as the digital building sector evolves. “Security has to be built into every layer of the IoT and digital building response,” agrees Farrington.

She points to Google initiatives in this area such as guidance for partners on IoT security and the development of open source tools including the Device Automated Qualification (DAQ) framework, which is a method by which companies can ensure that devices comply with stipulated standards and requirements.

Aside from her own presentation, Farrington will be curious to discover how other businesses are developing in this sector in light of recent events: “I will be looking to see how other companies have responded as a result of Covid, as well as finding out more about the latest trends and technologies.”

Creating global connections Eduard Gil, manager, Catalan AV Cluster

By David Davies The connection between Integrated Systems Events and the Catalan AV Cluster was actually forged three years ago, but there is no doubt that 2022 marks a very special milestone in the relationship between the two organisations. Having travelled to Amsterdam in 2019 to greet ISE ahead of its relocation to Barcelona, this year sees that move finally take place; initiating an exciting new chapter in the history of the world’s leading AV and systems integration exhibition.

Eduard Gil is manager of the Catalan AV Cluster, which is a group of more than 145 companies and institutions working together to build a “strong and innovative” AV business. “The Catalan AV Cluster, as well as the Catalan AV sector, has been gifted with the arrival of ISE in Barcelona since it will revitalise the whole industry,” he says. “It will have a direct impact in the MICE

[meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions], integrated systems and events sectors, but its effects will also be noticed in other business segments within the audiovisual value chain. Barcelona is already the first MICE destination in Europe, and with ISE here companies working in this field will improve their business performance.”

AV Experience Zone, for which it is preparing for sessions covering topics including integrated systems for corporate, education, retail and hospitality. It is also working closely with AVIXA to hold a session about the metaverse and the virtual economy, which will feature both content creators and technology providers.

Building brands Ever since representatives of the Catalan AV Cluster met with ISE managing director Mike Blackman and AVIXA chief global officer Sarah Joyce three years ago, ties between the organisations have grown stronger. Blackman has participated remotely in the Cluster’s Audiovisual Talent Week, and he joined the Events & Brands meeting earlier this year, which explored the relationship between these two fields, and how the industry can be supported during what has been a challenging period.

In addition, reveals Gil, “we will hold an international AV clusters’ forum, both face-to-face on the stand of Barcelona City Council and online, with the aim of creating global connections, inspiring clusters through the sharing of good practices, and improving policy-related education. Finally, the best technology projects by students shown in the most recent edition of the Audiovisual Talent Week will be showcased in the AV Experience Zone. We think this is a great opportunity both for ISE, which will attract new local talent, and for students, who will have the chance for their work to become better known internationally.”

Meanwhile, while he doesn’t downplay the impact of the pandemic on the AV sector in his region, Gil does think that it has increased the adoption of new technologies that should ultimately lead to more growth in the years to come. He predicts: “We will see a rapid acceleration [regarding the incorporation] of technologies including holography and XR, as well as LED [virtual sets], which are very suitable for live events and the production of advertisements and films.”

What’s On Refik Anadol takes us In the Mind of Gaudí during Opening Keynote Refik Anadol, a media artist and pioneer in the aesthetics of data and machine intelligence, will deliver this year’s Opening Keynote, entitled ‘Exploring the Heritage of Tomorrow’.

In 2014, Anadol founded Los Angeles-based Refik Anadol Studio, which produces enthralling and immersive media art intended for people of any age or background.

The award-winning studio, which comprises artists, architects, data scientists and researchers from diverse professional and personal backgrounds, has produced projects that have been shown in more than 50 cities across six continents and have been experienced by millions of ardent fans.

Working at the intersection of art, architecture, science and technology, Anadol creates site-specific threedimensional data sculptures and paintings, live audiovisual performances and immersive installations.

His works address the challenges and possibilities that ubiquitous computing has imposed on humanity, and explore questions around what it means to be human in the age of artificial intelligence, and whether machines can learn, achieve consciousness or even dream.

His creations have been featured at iconic landmarks, museums and festivals worldwide, such as Walt Disney Concert Hall, Dongdaemun Design Plaza, The Centre Pompidou, Istanbul Design Biennial and Sydney City Art, among many others.

Anadol says that for his artworks, “I use data as pigment and paint with a thinking brush, with the assistance of machine intelligence.”

He has created ‘In the Mind of Gaudí’, a digital artwork inspired by Casa Batlló and its architect, exhibited in the Gaudí Cube, the world’s first six-sided LED-walled

room. It shows the different creative capacities of the combination of digital image, big data and AI, and explores new ways to bring digital art closer to the general public.

The Opening Keynote will take place at 18:00 on Tuesday 10 May on the AV Experience Zone stage.

World-first digital art exhibition to bring masterpieces to life ISE is working with Exhibition Hub to curate a unique virtual reality experience art installation which combines several of the company’s award-winning immersive art experiences.

A world first and one-of-a-kind, this digital art exhibition will animate iconic masterpieces from artists such as Van Gogh and Gustav Klimt. The spectacular 360° light and music show has been created with the support of AED Display, AV Stumpfl, AV-Drop/Showtex, Barco, Fluge, Holoplot, LANG, Middle Atlantic and more.

Integrated Systems Events managing director Mike Blackman explained: “ISE embodies creativity, innovation and technology and I am really excited that we have put together this experience for this, our first big event at our new home in Barcelona. I cannot wait to see it in action during the show.”

AVIXA: Bringing the AV industry together

Chris Lavelle, senior director of development, EMEA, AVIXA 2021 was another character-building year for us all in the industry. Beyond the challenges the pandemic itself has brought, our members and the industry have too been dealing with the frustration of supply chain issues affecting their ability to take full advantage of new business opportunities.

Through the conversations AVIXA has had with our members in 2021, it is clear that ISE 2022 is a pinnacle show for us all.

At ISE, AV professionals come together in one place to have those face-to-face discussions on critical issues, re-establish relationships and forge new connections.

Never has it been more important for AVIXA to be the hub for the professional audiovisual community.

Like for most people, 2021 was a year to adapt, execute and stay relevant.

As the leading commercial AV industry association, AVIXA has done just that to continue to support our members.

‘At ISE, AV professionals come together in one place to have those faceto-face discussions on critical issues’ During 2021, the EMEA and wider AVIXA team produced a variety of online events and classes, including 22 webinars and eight virtual courses. Ten in-person AVIXA contract courses were taught in Norway, Austria, Switzerland and Germany.

Many of the courses were CTS Prep courses with CTS testing-taking available directly after the course. In October alone, 40 people in the DACH region passed their CTS exam directly after their course. In the DACH region, AVIXA is seeing phenomenal demand for CTS Prep and CTS exams and the Networked AV Systems course as the need for networking skills in AV soars.

Events across Europe Also in 2021, AV professionals in Iberia had the opportunity to join AVIXA’s Congresso online events hosted by our Latin American and Iberian teams and delivered in Spanish and Portuguese.

at the ISE Barcelona event in 2021. This Spanish-language event was dedicated to showcasing AV solutions to various vertical markets including retail, hospitality, education and corporate.

The event attracted over 600 inperson attendees with several hundred watching the live stream online.

of the year, we were able to run our AV for the IT World in-person workshop, our first in-person Italian event since ISE 2020.

During the London ISE event, we enjoyed seeing those in the industry who could join us in person at the event. We held an intimate in-person member roundtable, participated on the main stage and thoroughly enjoyed engaging with our members and the wider industry.

The AVIXA Woman’s Council UK started hosting regular online coffee mornings and finished the year with an event held at the Rose Shure Experience Centre with an inspiring guest speaker, Olympic sensation Tessa Sanderson.

We kept most of our Italian activity online during 2021, running various webinars ranging from AV/IT to sustainability and welfare, and launched a new online CTS study group programme. Towards the end

New for ISE 2022, and created to support the release of the RP22 standard, will be the RP22 Audio and Room Design Recommended Practice Workshop taking place on Tuesday 10 May. This intensive advanced training introduces the new guidelines in RP22, focusing on the four objectively defined levels of performance that will define different levels of immersive experience. Presented by Peter Aylett and Rich Green, the course takes a ‘teach then do’ approach and will challenge small groups to apply guidelines to real-world rooms.

For that reason, visitors to Lightware’s stand at ISE will be able to enjoy live presentations of its new products as well as learn more about the integration with Cisco Webex Room Devices and the bring your own device (BYOD) capabilities of the Taurus UCX line.

The DM NAX matrix/ amplifier line brings connectivity with native music streaming.

Crestron’s audio solutions are also enhanced with the line-up of in-wall, in-ceiling and landscape speakers developed through a partnership with Origin Acoustics. This new line of Crestron Speakers is made with premium components to support the high output and resolution capacity of the DM NAX amplifier. Each speaker model is architecturally constructed to disappear into a home’s design without sacrificing audio quality.

Satellite launch for laser projectors Digital Projection | Stand: 3K900 Digital Projection has extended its line-up of Satellite MLS (module laser system) projectors, which now includes the 20,000-lumen Highlite and 30,000-lumen Titan 3-chip models, along with the flagship 40,000-lumen native 4K (4096x2160) Insight Satellite MLS. The Satellite MLS projector head unit is said to be compact, quiet, relatively lightweight and to consume very little power. This simplifies system design, from transportation and installation to serviceability and lifespan. By separating the head unit from the light source and linking the two by fibre-optic cables up to 100m long, Digital Projection claims to “offer the installer true flexibility, particularly where space and access are restricted”.

Highlights on the Pharos stand will include demos of the new features within Pharos Designer software.

Created to complement the Designer range of controllers, the software incorporates a GUI that allows even new users to start work immediately and takes them through each stage of their lighting project.

Pharos will be appearing as part of the new Lighting and Staging area within Hall 7. Bas Hoksbergen, business development manager, Pharos, said: “We are looking forward to exhibiting at one of the first in-person exhibitions in over two years. The modular light source is a self-contained RGB laser unit with no external chiller. Each module outputs 10,000 lumens and has a touch panel control for easy set-up and operation. Weighing under 25kg, each rack-mountable module is 4U high.

On trend to make a connection Sony | Stand: 3E400 Several new displays and projectors will be on the Sony stand, as well as new technology for corporate and education use.

These include two new HD and 4Kx2K Crystal LED displays aimed at automotive, retail, corporate lobbies, showrooms Colour wheels: Sony hopes to make and entertainment a splash (of colour) at ISE environments.

It will also show its flagship Bravia series of 4K professional displays, including its recently released 100in and 32in displays.

The latest range of advanced 3LCD laser projectors includes the new VPL-FHZ80 and VPL-FHZ85 models, which are claimed to be “the industry’s smallest, lightest 8,000-lumen projectors”. They are designed for use in midsize corporate, education and public environments.

Systems for education will also be on show, including the SRG camera, a beamforming mic and edge analytics technology, as well as Sony’s suite of TEOS workspace management systems, alongside digital signage and meeting room management solutions.

Clear and present Dante connectivity MSE Audio | Stand: 3P630 The SoundTube IPD-TSB2.0 STNet Dante-enabled soundbar is now shipping. It offers ‘end-to-end’ Dante connectivity in conferencing and boardroom video installations. According to MSE Audio, making the soundbar interoperable with other Dante products gives integrators additional flexibility when designing and installing audio systems.

Mike Sipe, vice president, sales at MSE Audio, said: “Our customers have been asking for an AV-over-IP high-performance soundbar for conferencing. Most IP-based audio systems can use this, especially in areas like classrooms, offices and huddle spaces.”

The IPD-TSB2.0 features a built-in amplifier and digital signal processor. The soundbar measures 1.5in (3.8cm) thick where the bar meets the TV, is 6.75in (17cm) tall and 43in (109cm) wide. The new range of projectors offer what the firm calls “significant advantages”, including reduced size and weight, easier installation and set-up and simplified maintenance.

Both feature the WolfVision mechanical design concept, which incorporates a camera, LED light system and all-electronic hardware into the visualiser arm. In addition to native 4K UHD output, the specification features a touchscreen control and preview monitor, plus 12x or 24x zoom range and, depending on the model selected, simultaneous 1080p FHD or 4K UHD recording and streaming.
