Welcome

ISE 2024: Bigger and better than ever

With more show floor space and an extensive content programme, ISE 2024 will be the biggest yet, and in its 20th anniversary year, there will be plenty to celebrate, says Mike Blackman, managing director, Integrated Systems Events

Welcome to the Preview edition of The Daily. I’m very happy to tell you that ISE 2024 will be our biggest ISE ever. It has over 66,000sqm of exhibitor stand space, and if you add in the show features, it’s about 30% bigger than in 2023. We’ve added two new halls to the floorplan: Hall 1 is where you’ll find the Lighting & Staging Zone, while Hall 4 contains the Content Production & Distribution Zone, an expansion of the MultiTechnology Zone, as well as a Lighting & Staging Pavilion to complement what’s in Hall 1. As I write these words in December, we’ve topped the 1,300-exhibitor mark, and this number is likely to rise further as more co-exhibitors come on board. Our visitor registrations are running ahead of the same time last year, so we’re quietly confident of another excellent attendance figure. We’re also presenting our largest-ever content programme. Our keynote speakers come from different fields, but they are all masters of delivering fantastic experiences using AV technology. Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, an Oscarwinning documentary maker and film director, will talk about technology and storytelling. We also have keynotes from two highly talented visual artists: Jeroen van der Most is at the forefront of integrating data, algorithms and artificial intelligence into his creative endeavours; and Sofia Crespo will be talking about the projection mapping that she is creating for the façade of Barcelona’s Casa Batlló, a magnificent building designed by Antoni Gaudí, which will be shown on the Sunday before ISE 2024 opens. Our regular conference programme has been augmented with the inaugural European/Latin American AV Summit, which is the first conference to explore the opportunities available to boost audiovisual business between the two regions. We have an impressive speaker line-up, including the Mayor of Barcelona City, Jaume Collboni, as well as senior figures from European and Latin American governments and trade bodies. We also have an extended programme of free content sessions across no fewer than six stages; four on the show floor (ISE Show Floor Stage, AVIXA Xchange LIVE, CEDIA Smart Home Technology Stage, Plug and Play Stage) and two just off the upper walkway (ISE Partner Stage in room CC5.3, and also room CC4.1). We’re very grateful to the many partners who are contributing to this programme, including AFIAL, the Catalan AV Cluster and the Impulsa Talentum Foundation. This is also a special show because 2024 is ISE’s 20th anniversary. Supported from the beginning by

Preview Edition: ISE Daily 2024

our co-owners AVIXA and CEDIA, the show began on a fairly modest scale in Geneva in 2004; after moving to Amsterdam it grew steadily year on year, eventually outgrowing the venue, which led us to Barcelona from 2021 onwards. We will have two special show floor features to mark this milestone, at opposite ends of the upper walkway: the ISE Time Tunnel, presenting 20 years of technology developments; and the ISE Audio Museum, which will display stage and studio equipment used by some famous names in music in the analogue era.

‘ISE 2024 will be our biggest ISE ever. It has over 66,000sqm of exhibitor stand space, and if you add in the show features, it’s about 30% bigger than in 2023’ The Daily, ISE’s official newspaper, has been in existence almost as long as the show – it was first published in 2006 – and continues to bring news from the show floor each morning. You’ll find more details of everything I’ve mentioned here in the pages of this digital Preview. I hope you enjoy reading it and find it helpful in planning your visit to ISE 2024. See you in Barcelona!

Using stories to change the world

By Michael Burns

Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, journalist and filmmaker

Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy is a Pakistani-Canadian journalist, filmmaker and activist, known for her two Academy Award-winning documentaries Saving Face and A Girl in the River: The Price of Forgiveness, as well as the animated 3 Bahadur franchise, and directing episodes of Disney+ TV series Ms. Marvel. She’s also set to direct Daisy Ridley in the forthcoming Star Wars: New Jedi Order. Not only is she the first woman and person of colour to direct a Star Wars movie, she will also direct Paramount’s Brilliance, based on the Marcus Sakey novel of the same name. The recipient of multiple Emmy Awards, a Knight International Journalism Award and the Hilal-e-Imtiaz, the second-highest civilian award of Pakistan, Obaid-Chinoy was named one of Time Magazine’s 100 most influential people in the world. It’s exciting then that Obaid-Chinoy is to give the Opening Keynote at ISE 2024, a session entitled ‘Seeing Through the Eyes of Others: Redefining the art of storytelling’.

‘I’ve always wanted my stories to jolt people, to shake them into having difficult conversations’ “I started telling stories in print when I was 14 years old and I continued to tell those stories in print until I went to college and 9/11 happened,” she said in a recent interview with A Rabbit’s Foot’s Fatima Khan. “Then I self-taught myself film, because at the heart of every film is storytelling and if you actually know how to tell a story, everything else falls into place.”

Shaping the story

Obaid-Chinoy’s keynote will explore the pivotal role AV technologies have in shaping and enhancing the art of storytelling. By sharing examples from her work, she will demonstrate how these technologies can place viewers in the heart of the story. According to this double Oscar winner and TED Fellow, the visual medium has the power to change the way we think about ourselves and our culture. “Film can change the way people perceive issues,” she told the TED2019 Conference. “An effective storyteller speaks to our emotions, elicits empathy and compassion, and forces us to look at things differently.” Her short film, A Girl in the River: The Price of Forgiveness shone a light on violence against women in Pakistan and a loophole in laws against so-called honour killing. Her efforts, including a visit with the

Preview Edition: ISE Daily 2024

Prime Minister of Pakistan in 2016 and a call during her Oscar-acceptance speech for the law to be changed, ultimately helped push through legislation. However, with women still being killed, Obaid-Chinoy turned to direct action; she took to the road in a mobile cinema to show films in small towns and villages across Pakistan. “I’ve always wanted my stories to jolt people, to shake them into having difficult conversations,” she told the TED Conference. “We began to introduce everyone to films that opened their minds to competing world views, encouraging children to build critical thinking so that they could ask questions. And we expanded our scope beyond honour killings, talking about income inequality, the environment, talking about ethnic relations, religious tolerance and compassion.” Women were shown films in which they were heroes, not victims. “We show them films in which they are heads of state or where they are lawyers and doctors and in leadership positions, we talk to them and encourage them to step into those roles,” she continued. Obaid-Chinoy also documented the way the films influenced the behaviour of people in these villages. “In small towns and villages across Pakistan, men are changing the way they interact with women, children are changing the way they see the world, one village at a time, through cinema,” she told the TED Conference. The world needs more empathy, she told Fatima Khan. “We need to be cognisant of the fact that the planet cannot have more people and that we need to be together: not as this country or that country, but together as humanity. We need to have more empathy for Mother Nature, for this planet and for each other.” “Cinema can play a pivotal role in bringing people together,” she added. “There has to be an understanding of each other’s issues and our shared traumas.” The Opening Keynote, entitled ‘Seeing Through the Eyes of Others: Redefining the art of storytelling’, takes place at 17:15-18:00 on Tuesday 30 January in the ISE Show Floor Theatre in Hall 4. It is open to all and booking is not required.

Bridging the boundary between humans and nature

By Michael Burns

Jeroen van der Most, artist

ISE showgoers will be looking at AI in a different way once Dutch artist Jeroen van der Most has delivered his keynote. Most, who has been creating art with data, algorithms and AI since 2010, promises to use the ISE stage to “stretch our concept or ideas about what art is”, explore the future of “flexible content systems”, and look into “bridging the boundary between humans and nature with artificial intelligence”. “I will explore how we can actually use artificial intelligence to connect in deeper ways with people,” says Most. “I will do this by showing a sort of AI replica that I created of my own mind, in which I can offer people a trip through visualisations of my thoughts. It’s going to be really cool.” Most is also set to mesmerise audiences with a live performance broadcast on the newly unveiled South Access Screen, a 193sqm transparent LED display at the entrance to the Fira. Titled ‘Bee Barcelona’,this AI replica of his creative mind will take the audience on an immersive journey through his thoughts. Most is particularly interested in the real-time content creation capabilities of artificial intelligence. “AI systems are continuously able to create new content in the sense that you could have an artwork or media content that is always developing on its own,” he explains. “Every time you look at the system, it’s continuously changing and offers you new perspectives. That’s really the key difference from old-school digital art because these AI systems can ‘create content’ on their own, as self-creating, endlessly evolving systems.”

‘I will explore how we can actually use artificial intelligence to connect in deeper ways with people’ One such example is Quantum Cat, an art installation based on a phenomenon called ‘superposition’. Using a combination of data based on measurements of the states of electrons in a quantum computer, a system monitoring Dutch Twitter discussions, and text generated by the GPT-3 large language model, a real-time computer system merges everything into the final digital cat, which uses cameras to react to the presence of spectators. The cat ‘reflects’ on topics discussed in the Twittersphere. When freedom of speech is trending, for example, the

Preview Edition: ISE Daily 2024

cat will give ethical reflections on the subject, while tweets about the economy trigger reflections on the choice between the economy and the environment. Another high-profile example, Letters from Nature, was created by Most and Peter van der Putten, assistant professor at the Leiden Institute of Advanced Computer Science at Leiden University. It uses GPT-3 to ‘write’ letters to world leaders on behalf of various major entities under threat, such as ice caps, islands and coral reefs. Started in 2022 and still ongoing, the work was inspired by theparliamentofthings.org and the writings of French philosopher and anthropologist Bruno Latour, as well as the ancient concept of the ability of nature and inanimate objects to speak and tell stories.

Following the data

In terms of AV technology, smart homes and IoT devices are obvious data sources, ready to be tapped for AI-driven content. A system like the one behind Letters from Nature could tap into such resources, with the results constantly updating content for large-scale displays or projections. “It could be intelligent interpretations of the environment, whether that is an office or whether that is the climate or whatever, and that could then be translated into new visuals or new textual content,” says Most. “It could be a system that continuously generates textual content ideas that could inspire us to rethink how we could live together with nature in new ways. “There are all sorts of interactive possibilities with these systems. Of course, AI as it currently exists also offers a sort of democratisation in the sense that everybody can create cool images with these tools. But when everybody is an artist, it immediately pushes everyone forward. It raises the bar for the art scene.” Most hopes his keynote will give people ideas that artificial intelligence can be more than just a tool for productivity, efficiency and commercial gain. “It can also be used to create something more interesting, something beautiful, something from the heart and purely about the rational mind,” he says. “It can connect with other people and nature in a deeper way. That’s what’s behind my talk.” Jeroen van der Most’s keynote takes place at 17:15-18:00 on Wednesday 31 January in the ISE Show Floor Theatre in Hall 4. It is open to all and booking is not required.

AI and sustainability to dominate discussions

By David Davies

Pam Taggart, vice president of content creation, AVIXA

It has been a year of very big themes in pro AV – from the growing momentum (and anxiety) surrounding artificial intelligence to the recognition that decarbonisation efforts need to be accelerated – and ISE 2024 visitors can expect to see many of these themes explored in AVIXA’s busy schedule of conferences, seminars and workshops. “I’m excited to see some real dominant threads on sustainability, AI and quite a bit around broadcast tech for AV use, virtual production and streaming,” says Pam Taggart, vice president of content creation at AVIXA. “All of these threads will weave through the entire programme at ISE, be it conferences, Tech Talks or AVIXA Xchange LIVE meet-ups. In many cases we’ll try to go beyond the platitudes to examples, case studies, or how-tos on these complicated topics.” Partnering with other organisations to explore these subjects has a higher profile this year, with Taggart highlighting “some new collaborations intended to bring the voice of the end user centrestage to deliver feedback directly to the industry”. AVIXA will work with IABM on the Content Production & Distribution Summit, which is set to bring “the latest from the traditional broadcast industry into what is now being innovatively used in pro-AV applications”.

‘It’s an exciting time to be in AV, and an exciting time to come together and share’ In addition, the Smart Workplace Summit, taking place over two days, will tackle “new workplace demands” related to data security, emerging technologies and purchasing decisions. Taggart also reveals that the Control Rooms Summit will examine two specific areas – best practices in cyber security strategies and the attraction and retention of talent – while the Live Events Summit will dive into some of the most outstanding immersive event experiences of the year, from Beyoncé’s Revolution Tour to the opening of Sphere in Las Vegas. Visitors can also expect a notable concentration on audio this year, informed by recent innovations in spatial and immersive audio. “Beyond the technical sessions and deep dives, we’ll be hosting meet-ups around new and revised standards from both AVIXA and CEDIA on spectral balance, audio coverage uniformity and immersive audio. There will also be the ISE Sound Experience, expanded audio

Preview Edition: ISE Daily 2024

demo spaces, and show floor tours to investigate these innovations up close,” says Taggart.

New for 2024

Brand new features for this year’s show include a CEDIA and AVIXA co-produced half-day Sustainability Workshop designed to help companies create their own plans to tackle this crucial issue, and incorporating an Xchange LIVE-hosted meet-up as well as input from SAVe and AVIXA’s Sustainability Taskforce. Also fresh for 2024 are show floor tours for specific solution areas in English and German, along with a CTS Prep 12-hour Workshop on 28 and 29 January. Confirmed speakers across AVIXA-related events include Ross Video CEO David Ross, who will address broadcast and pro AV convergence at the Content Production & Distribution Summit; DNV principal cyber security consultant Shaun Reardon, who will speak at both the Smart Workplace Summit and the Control Rooms Summit; and Chaos Inc co-founder Stacia Pfeiffer and i3 technologies head of education Jeroen de Keyser, who will both speak at Xchange LIVE. Invited to consider what she is most looking forward to at ISE 2024, Taggart responds: “I’m a practical sort, so I’m always excited to see things in action; what’s worked, what hasn’t, what folks are trying, what we can learn from each other to innovate faster. Covid was such a catalyst for change in our industry, and now some of that innovation is bearing fruit with the acceleration in adoption of streaming into AV workflows for non-typical broadcast functions, in re-imagining meetings (again, and then again), in finding completely unique ways to incorporate AI either for client use or to speed tasks in various stages of projects.” She adds: “It’s an exciting time to be in AV, and an exciting time to come together and share. I’m eager to follow the trends, but also looking forward to being blindsided by something completely new; and ISE always delivers!” For full details of AVIXA’s content schedule, please visit www.avixa.org/ise.

Helping visitors stay ahead of the curve

By David Davies

Daryl Friedman, global president and CEO, CEDIA

CEDIA, the association for smart home professionals, has lined up another packed programme for this year’s ISE, addressing many of the hot topics currently shaping the industry worldwide, including AI, sustainability and immersive audio. Daryl Friedman, global president and CEO of CEDIA, believes that AI is set to be a key theme at ISE 2024. “We see news about AI every day,” he says. “It’s a rapidly evolving market and one that will significantly impact both the way that integrators conduct their business and the exceptional experiences that they deliver for their customers.” In order to help visitors “stay ahead of the curve”, the CEDIA Smart Home Technology Conference (30 January to 2 February) will include two related sessions: ‘How AI Language Tools Can Revolutionise Workflows for Technology Integrators’ and ‘AI Threats & Cybersecurity for Smart Home Professionals’.

Show highlights

Among the other conference sessions highlighted by Friedman are: ‘Harmonising Innovation: Embracing a new era of technology while remaining grounded in humanity’, in which future technologies specialist Rich Green will discuss the phenomenon of ‘slow technology’ and how to create sustainable environments for clients;

‘ISE is a destination where our industry can meet, connect and share ideas with CEDIA, its global association’ ‘Creating an Exit Strategy’, where industry finance expert Leslie Shiner will discuss why home technology companies need to focus on achieving incremental jumps as they grow; and ‘Immersive Audio Design Excellence Workshop’, in which participants will work in small groups to learn about, and apply, some of the guidelines outlined in the new CEDIA/CTA RP22 Immersive Audio System Design Recommended Practice. CEDIA is also partnering with AVIXA to deliver a new Sustainability Workshop, which will take place on the morning of 2 February. Friedman notes: “The industry needs to adapt to the global issues of climate change, nature loss and social resilience. We are both part of the problem and part of the solution. This workshop aims to help ISE delegates understand the issues, think through with others the impact and opportunity presented by

Preview Edition: ISE Daily 2024

these challenges, and learn how they can profit.” A number of CEDIA members will also participate in the Smart Home Technology Stage programme, which will run every day of the show and will be hosted by Walt Zerbe, CEDIA’s senior director of technology & standards. “With a diverse range of topics on the docket – spanning technology, design, business strategies, human interactions and the future landscape of smart homes – this annual event is a treasure trove of knowledge,” says Friedman. Across its activities, the organisation will focus on providing insight that allows companies to recruit the right employees and run an efficient operation that turns a good profit. Key initiatives in this space include the CEDIA NextGen Toolkit as well as business-focused training during the CEDIA Smart Home Technology Conference. More generally, Friedman anticipates that the show will reflect burgeoning demand for products that support wellbeing and energy efficiency: “We expect to see technology improvements at the show to help installers take advantage of this opportunity, especially in circadian rhythm lighting, sensors, security systems and impressive AV solutions for the home and garden. We also anticipate more sustainable options from manufacturers reflected in a greater focus on energysaving products and features that can help integrators address the environmental concerns of their clients.” Outlining his own personal expectations for the show, Friedman observes: “ISE 2024 is a destination where our industry can meet, connect and share ideas with CEDIA, its global association. Beyond the technology and business trends which we will undoubtedly experience at the show, it’s this platform for our industry which ISE 2024 provides that most excites me. It’s an honour to be CEO of an organisation that represents such a dynamic industry which can enrich the lives of so many people.” For full details of CEDIA’s plans for ISE 2024, please visit https://cedia.org/connection/ integrated-systems-europe/.

Keeping pace with ongoing change

By David Davies

smart workplace summit ise Gary Keene, Smart Workplace Summit co-ordinator, AV consultant and coach

One of the primary reasons that Gary Keene was so keen to be involved in the latest Smart Workplace Summit (SWS), which takes place on the afternoons of Wednesday 31 January and Thursday 1 February, is that many companies are still undermined by a fundamental disconnect between their facilities management and audiovisual teams. “For instance, there can often be drivers and incentives which facilities managers have that AV teams are only dimly aware of,” says Keene, a former technology leader (IT and AV) at Google who is now heading his own business, Curved Air Consulting, and coaching at the University of the Arts London (UAL). “One of my main interests now is in exploring how collaboration can be more embedded into the design and ongoing changes that occur within workplaces.” The fact that the pace of change is only continuing to accelerate will be gently underlined throughout SWS. Day one will cover several of the most pressing topics currently facing all organisations, including cyber security and AI, with speakers including Shaun Reardon. An expert on global cyber security and a principal consultant at DNV, Reardon will explore the internal and external threats that companies need to be aware of, while a representative of the International Facility Management Association (IFMA) will follow up with a presentation of its latest research on cyber security in the workplace. “Shaun is doing a lot of work to raise awareness within the AV industry about the challenges faced by facilities managers and IT teams through the poor deployment of collaborative technology,” says Keene. “I think the session will cover that, as well as the [specific issues] related to the ‘work from anywhere’ audience, because a lot of the challenges these days derive from the very fast roll-out of hybrid solutions on the back of Covid.”

Focus on flexibility

The first afternoon will conclude with a “deep dive into AI and how it is being incorporated into products and solutions, as well as the ethics and how AI should be used”, he continues. The second afternoon will turn the spotlight on workplace solutions and include a keynote case study from Marcus Saunders, who is associate director, technical resources, at the UAL: London College of Fashion. He will examine how the faculty sought to

combine resources spread across six separate sites into one new, 14-storey building supporting 5,000 students, with flexibility of use as the chief priority. “The ability to change the configuration of the teaching spaces over time is critical because it’s almost impossible to work out in advance how six previously distinct sites are going to have to share facilities,” says Keene. “So that means both the spaces and the technology available within them have to be highly flexible and able to be changed at short notice.” The second afternoon will continue with an examination of how corporates and institutions are utilising emerging technologies to improve the workplace and hybrid working experiences. This will be followed by a session on climate change, sustainability and the integration of ESG into company operations, before the event wraps up with an interactive audience session discussing the workplace of the future. “We are going through a period of phenomenal change in both technology terms and the way that companies operate, and I am really looking forward to exploring some of these developments at Smart Workplace Summit,” concludes Keene. Smart Workplace Summit runs from 15:30-18:00 on Wednesday 31 January and Thursday 1 February in room CC5.1.

Building transatlantic connections

By Monica Heck

Mateu Hernández, chair, European/ Latin American AV Summit

An exciting new summit has been announced for ISE 2024 that promises to strengthen ties between the AV industries of Latin America and Europe through the participation of top-level figures from both sides of the Atlantic, including government representatives and industry leaders. The European/Latin American AV Summit (ELAS) will take place for the first time during the show on 30-31 January in room CC4.1 at Fira de Barcelona. Its ambitions are to bring the public and private sectors of both regions together to exchange, network, innovate and develop new business opportunities within the AV industry, according to Mateu Hernández, chair of the summit. “This first C-level executive summit in Barcelona is a bridge for the AV sectors of both regions. We hope to consolidate ISE as the location of the best and most important meeting for governments and companies from Latin America and Europe,” says Hernández. “Its location in Barcelona is crucial: Europe and Latin America share a common culture and existing cultural links, and Barcelona is easier to access for entrepreneurs and government officials from that region than the US.” The Latin American AV sector is growing fast, with sectors linked to culture and advertising driving growth, says Hernández. He notes that retail and mall culture are especially promising, alongside cultural festivals and stadium events, as well as the explosion of teleworking and digital nomadism.

‘This first C-level executive summit in Barcelona is a bridge for the AV sectors of both regions’ A shared vision

“Latin America must look towards Europe during this time, as they share a similar market structure made up of multiple states and governments, rather than looking towards the US or China, with their single government and centralised regulations,” he adds. “The context is very different, so looking to Europe is more strategic for Latin America in terms of the cultural and institutional environment.” Hernández hopes the summit, held in English with a translation service available, will allow top-level government officials and industry leaders from the European Union and Latin America to exchange around a number of

crucial industry topics, including industry regulations and the European Union-Latin America and the Caribbean (EU-LAC) Global Gateway Investment Agenda (GGIA). The EU-LAC Foundation and its projects aim to create strategic partnerships between both regions, which include the GGIA fund that will be spotlighted during the summit. This represents a big opportunity for digital development in Latin America, according to Hernández. “Governments will be able to present initiatives that they wish to develop across Latin America, with European support,” he explains. “The fund has already launched and there are some projects already ongoing through the fund that will be highlighted.” Also on the cards is a big focus on hot industry topics such as artificial intelligence, including its use and regulation. “A big slot will be reserved to talk about AI regulation, which will be a chance for representatives from both the EU and Latin America to exchange about what kind of regulatory models they need to pursue or develop,” says Hernández. “This is a discussion the AV private sector needs to listen to, as it will impact how the public space is regulated going forward. Screens are everywhere, AV consumption is everywhere, so this is another opportunity for industry and governments to understand best practices and to develop that sector accordingly.” The ELAS 2024 speaker line-up includes Martin Saul, CEO ICAP Global and chair of the AVIXA board of directors; Paco Guzman, research scientist manager, Meta AI; Federico Bausone, executive director, Crestron Latin America; Christina De Bono, founder and president, SAVe Sustainability in AV; and Sean Wargo, VP market intelligence, AVIXA, alongside top government representatives from Latin America and the European Union. The European/Latin American AV Summit runs from 14:00-18:00 on Tuesday 30 January and from 10:30-13:00 on Wednesday 31 January in room CC4.1.

Celebrating Spanish AV

By Monica Heck

Juan José Vila, president, AFIAL and CSO, Equipson

Spain’s AV manufacturer and importer association AFIAL is relocating its AVL Summit to Barcelona to run it within the framework of ISE 2024. The 20th edition of the event will take place on 1 February in room CC4.1 at Fira Barcelona, offering a mix of conferences and training sessions. This summit, a collaboration between AFIAL, AVIXA, CEDIA and ISE, is aimed at the development of the AV industry in Spain. Juan José Vila, president of AFIAL and CSO of AV technology distributor and manufacturer Equipson, hopes a presence at ISE in a key location will allow AFIAL to expand its reach. “Some of the panels will cover how the Spanish AV industry has changed over the past 20 years and where it is headed,” he explains. “There will be a focus on AV in the areas of sport and entertainment, including big events such as Eurovision, tennis Grand Slams and MotoGP.” The summit will also target the professional lighting sector. “As ISE continues to broaden its reach into the pro-lighting sector, AFIAL is in a strong position to support that move as, historically, we have been very involved in the lighting industry,” says Vila.

On your bike

This year’s show also sees the return of the Spanish leg of UK charity bike ride Bikefest, created by Vila in partnership with PLASA’s cross-industry campaign #WeMakeEvents and AFIAL. During the pandemic, Vila saw that many in the pro AV industry in Spain were at their most vulnerable, having lost their income. Inspired by the annual UK Bikefest and in collaboration with #WeMakeEvents, Vila launched the charity bike ride in support of those in need within the industry. Now in its third year of existence as a beacon of hope for the live entertainment and events sector still recovering from the hardships of the pandemic, Bikefest Spain calls upon participants to cycle the nearly 400km from Valencia to Barcelona over three days, in time for ISE. Participants will raise funds for industry charities including Backup Tech, Music Support and Stagehand, that provide financial and wellbeing support to technical industry professionals. “The first year, ISE’s Barcelona debut was postponed and only 12 people could make the cycle due to the pandemic, but we raised €6,000. It was such a brilliant experience that we decided to repeat it last year

with more than 20 people raising €70,000, and with the amazing support of ISE and AVIXA,” says Vila. “This year, Bikefest will run from 26-28 January.” The CSO of Equipson is also excited about his company’s ISE participation this year. Equipson will have refreshed its website with a focus on vertical markets and will put the spotlight on its long-standing WorkPro brand of IP-rated speakers, including its new DSP range, described by Vila as one of the most complete offerings in the market today.

‘The panels will cover how the Spanish AV industry has changed over the past 20 years and where it is headed’ “We are a long-standing exhibitor at ISE and since the show moved to Barcelona, we have adopted a different strategy,” he explains. “It has been both a more involved and more rewarding experience for Equipson as a leading company in the Spanish market. In Amsterdam we worked with distributors, in Barcelona we are hosting our local and international direct customers. “ISE last year was an opportunity to meet everyone and we saw the benefits of the human touch. Solving issues and closing sales takes much less time when it’s done face to face instead of on webinars and conference calls. The ISE show allows us to meet all our customers in the one place and is a crucial date in the Equipson calendar.” The AVL Summit runs from 10:30-17:45 on Thursday 1 February in room CC4.1.

An advocate for sustainability

By Anne Morris

Christina De Bono, founder and president, SAVe

Sustainability in AV (SAVe), a non-profit organisation committed to ensuring a sustainable future, will be present at ISE for the second time after becoming the event’s official sustainability partner in 2023. As was the case last year, it will be seeking more industry leaders to help encourage stakeholders in the audiovisual field to take concerted action to achieve the United Nation’s 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). According to Christina De Bono, founder and president of SAVe, the organisation’s ambassador programme has already proved hugely successful, with several leaders from different parts of the world becoming SAVe ambassadors in order to “bring the same mission and initiatives to their regions”. “This year, we are hosting a SAVe ambassador leadership workshop to bring on more ambassadors who can take on a leadership role,” she says. SAVe will also be involved in a number of other activities throughout the event, including an exhibition area in Congress Square and a reception on Wednesday 31 January in Hall 8. Furthermore, SAVe is the sustainability partner for the inaugural European/ Latin American AV Summit on 30 and 31 January. “They identified three hot topics that they wanted to address, and one of them was sustainability. So we are hosting an interactive panel discussion called ‘Bringing the Sustainable Development Goals to the AV Industry’. We will be involving our SAVe ambassadors from Latin America in the panel discussion,” De Bono explains. She adds that the focus is to continue to help the AV industry do its part in achieving the SDGs. “The climate crisis, the increasing environmental degradation, the increasing inequality and poverty are diverse problems, and they’re getting worse. People want to do something in our industry,” she continues.

Second life

A key problem is tackling e-waste. “In 2019 alone, over 50 million metric tonnes were generated by North America and Europe, and the majority of that ends up in landfill and dumps. Less than 20% of that is officially recycled. In the United States it’s less than 10%,” she says. One of the programmes launched by SAVe to help

tackle this growing problem is SAVe: A Second Life. The aim here is to give AV equipment a second life by donating it through a network that SAVe has established with the Commission on Voluntary Service & Action and the Higher Education Technology Managers Alliance, representing 600 universities in North America. According to De Bono, this programme has already gained considerable traction. “Over the past year, we’ve actually published very comprehensive, official guidelines that companies can adopt on reuse, repurpose, recycling and proper disposal of AV equipment. We’re the first organisation in our industry to provide official guidelines,” she says, adding that SAVe has also come up with a vetting process to ascertain which recycling companies are certified. “I can’t even describe the level of enthusiasm and urgency that people have taken in getting involved with SAVe and bringing our initiatives to their constituencies and local markets,” she comments. Other initiatives include a certification programme. The aim here is to provide education, a workshop and planning session to help companies come up with an actionable plan on ways that their organisation can align with the Sustainable Development Goals. And there’s more to come throughout 2024, with the launch of a platform that can help measure the amount of AV equipment that doesn’t end up in a landfill or dump. “There are many ways that we can turn the ship around. But we have to take action now, because at the rate we’re going, in 2030, when we’re supposed to be achieving the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals, we will be producing upwards of 70 million metric tonnes of e-waste. It’s grown 21% in the past five years,” she says. De Bono is also president and founder of ClearTech, a commercial AV systems integration company headquartered in Altadena, California. As might be expected, the company has become a major proponent of SAVe’s goals and was one of the pilots for the organisation’s recycling guidelines. “We have a whole process in place that has been adopted company-wide,” she adds.

Digging into the green challenge

By Anne Morris

Simon Brown, chair, Sustainability Workshop ISE

Sustainability is set to be a key theme at ISE 2024 as visitors seek information and advice about green issues. This year, delegates will have the opportunity to really dig down into what they can do to ensure their operations are as environmentally friendly as possible, as part of the first Sustainability Workshop ISE, which takes place on Friday 2 February. Simon Brown is chairing the workshop, produced in association with AVIXA and CEDIA, and will address how the AV industry is not only part of the problem, but also part of the solution. The workshop aims to help ISE delegates think through the impact of the challenges they face, and consider how they can profit from potential opportunities. Brown is a business owner, entrepreneur and adviser who has focused on sustainable innovation over the past 20 years. Currently, he works as an adviser to corporates and growth businesses, is a special adviser to one of Europe’s largest private equity firms, and a founding shareholder in successful SaaS and ecotech businesses. “A conversation has been brewing for a while about the relevance of sustainability to industries that are represented at ISE,” Brown says. “There’s a huge agenda that people need to embrace and get their heads around, and start to apply that to how they do business,” he adds.

On the agenda

Brown expects a mix of companies to attend the Sustainability Workshop, although he sees greater benefits for small and medium-sized enterprises that perhaps lack the budget or expertise to implement their own green agendas. The aim is to help them better understand the problems that they face, why it matters to them and where they can act. “It will be interesting to bring together different companies in a room and get them thinking about why sustainability is important and how it is going to affect them. If you’re selling technology, then increasingly you’ve got to know where the kit is coming from and what it is made of, and how it can be repaired, reused or remanufactured,” Brown says. “And if you’re designing or installing smart places

then it matters how energy-saving, resource-efficient, natural and low-carbon they are going to be.” Brown says his aim is to get people thinking by engaging more intensively with the subject. “I’m expecting it to be very interactive and practical,” he adds. “I’m also hoping that what will come out of the discussion is the recognition that while there is huge pressure to tackle climate change and nature-loss, the opportunities for low carbon, especially in digital and technology-based businesses, are exciting. We’re seeing exponential uptake of some of these new technologies, and we need people like those in the room who are capable of designing things for customers that contribute to a sustainable future,” Brown says. He notes that the smart home and smart building sectors have a big role to play in reaching the goals of the wider environmental agenda. While bigger companies can face challenges as they transition to meet emissions reduction or resource-efficiency targets, smaller and newer companies have the ability to introduce a green agenda from the start. “For small businesses, it’s probably more of a rising tide,” he says, with a sustainable vision increasingly baked in from the outset. “They’re designing things with a consideration of nature, or climate, or some social value built in, and they’re growing on the back of it.” One thing is for sure, Brown says: “We’re headed to a very different future over the next five to 10 years.” Sustainability Workshop ISE runs from 10:30-14:30 on Friday 2 February in room C1.1.

Immersive tech and AI take centre stage

By Colby Ramsey

Eduard Gil, manager, Catalan AV Cluster

Visitors to ISE 2024 can once again expect a range of compelling options when it comes to the conference programme, including a series of Tech Talks organised by several curators, including the Catalan AV Cluster. This free-to-attend programme of daily sessions will be held in both English and Spanish. The third show in Barcelona promises an exciting programme covering the full scope of advancements and trends in the AV world, as Eduard Gil, manager of the Catalan AV Cluster, reveals. “Over the past year we have been working on various cross-cutting technologies which have guided our programme at ISE: AI, virtual production and immersivity,” he explains. Regarding virtual production, Gil points out that Catalonia has been positioning itself to compete on a national and European level with the recent opening of two new studios – Lavinia’s Plató Nou and another from Getsmusic – as well as the construction of a third by Mediapro.

‘As a cluster, we aim to promote the local industry but also to engage in international dialogue and knowledge sharing’ “As a cluster, we aim to promote the local industry but also to engage in international dialogue and knowledge sharing, so we will celebrate a meeting at ISE between these and other European virtual studios,” he adds. “We will also discuss in another panel about the emergence of new professional profiles and the modification of existing ones due to the advent of these new types of studios.” As immersive content continues to evolve, with Sphere in Las Vegas being a much talked about recent example, immersive technology is redefining how consumers experience content and it is providing new opportunities for audiovisual narrative and audience interaction. At ISE 2024, the Catalan AV Cluster will present the case study of Aura Invalides by its creators Moment Factory. Aura has transformed the iconic dome of Les Invalides in Paris into an impressive spectacle of light, video, architecture, sound and special effects. The Catalan AV Cluster will also host a panel discussion about immersive experiences in the field of leisure, detailing iconic projects such as the Barça Museum (Univrs) and the IDEAL digital arts centre (Layers of Reality and Minoria Absoluta).

Tech Tours

The cluster is also involved in this year’s Tech Tours programme, which takes visitors behind the scenes of major AV installations in Barcelona. “There is a strong presence of immersivity in our proposal for the Tech Tours,” adds Gil. “Initiatives in this direction are on the rise in Catalonia, demonstrating significant growth potential and increasing demand. Spaces such as Casa Amatller are increasingly complementing traditional museography with, in this case, a digital museum offering VR and XR experiences. “These examples complement the more established ones, such as Casa Batlló or IDEAL, which we will also have the opportunity to visit. We will also see how the idea of incorporating immersivity and enhanced experiences extends to the world of cinema through technologies like ScreenX and 4DX. We will visit Plató Nou, which is equipped with the latest LED volume, production lighting, media server and processing technologies, and we will witness a remote surgery demonstration using the ORisTIC technology developed by Ditec.” The Catalan AV Cluster will also use ISE to launch its Switch Report 2024, which will highlight some recent trends in AI and how it is radically transforming the way AV content is created and distributed. “Among the applications of AI, we will focus on how data and sentiment analysis are used to identify consumption patterns and preferences, allowing the adaptation of audiovisual content based on their success forecasts,” says Gil. “AI is progressively integrating into the entire value chain, and is assisting in tasks like documentation and research, script creation, storyboarding, recording, filming, post-production work and visual effects. In recent times, tools for actor re-aging and cloning – including voice – have improved, opening the door to the creation of hyper-realistic synthetic characters that can be used as hosts, narrators, influencers and more.” Tech Talks and Tech Talks Español sessions take place at 11:00-14:30 from Tuesday 30 January to Thursday 1 February on the ISE Show Floor Stage in Hall 4.

ability to effectively utilise and integrate data, and cloud-based tools have greatly simplified content creation, enabling users to deliver relevant, accurate and consistent material in seconds. Personalised experiences are also possible, driving engagement and delivering better business results in areas such as retail and hospitality. While retail is often seen as the key domain for digital signage, the education and corporate sectors also value its ability to inform, advise and guide users. In the corporate sector in particular, video walls are a popular display choice, offering a high-impact and eye-catching centrepiece. As display costs have fallen long term, so the number of units used in projects has tended to increase, offering the opportunity to share more, varied content. Interactivity is also increasingly valued, particularly two-way interactivity. Prominent companies in the Digital Signage & DOOH Zone include leading signage player manufacturer BrightSign; Scala, a global provider of intelligent digital signage, digital merchandising and intelligent sensors, and rich media customer experiences; DisplayForce, which focuses on programmatic advertising solutions; Intuiface, which offers a ‘no-code’ digital signage platform; and Nexmosphere, which manufactures interactive sensors for digital signage.

KNX will be returning to the Residential & Smart Building Zone in Hall 2

When it comes to commercial smart building, the aims are similar to the residential sector, with occupant comfort and safety as well as the sustainability benefits common reasons for investing in smart tech. However, these buildings tend to be on a bigger scale, making building management systems (BMS) key to their success. The BMS can be directly integrated with other building services, such as security, CCTV and safety systems from multiple vendors, as well as enabling remote access for maintenance and upgrades. Ease of use is central to the success of any smart home or building installation, which makes the control system a key aspect of any project. Major vendors in this area include Control4, Crestron and Savant, which offer apps, touchscreens and voice control solutions, while Gira is a full-service provider of intelligent systems for networked digital building control. TVs and displays are often the most eye-catching aspect of commercial and residential projects. Here Samsung offers products including the The Wall microLED display and The Frame, which mimics the look of a picture frame. Other popular brands include Sony and LG. When it comes to audio, Bang & Olufsen, Focal, Revolution Acoustics and Stealth Acoustics are among those delivering the high-end listening experience audiophiles expect. In addition, Harman Luxury offers advanced signal processors, equalisers, amplifiers and loudspeakers for rooms of any size. On the sustainability side, Airzone provides solutions that reduce the energy consumption of HVAC installations, Zykronix offers building management tools and Lutron is known for its energy-saving smart lighting controls and automated blinds for both commercial and residential applications. All of these manufacturers, along with the ISE coowner CEDIA and Presenting Show Partner KNX, will be present in the Residential & Smart Building Zone.

engagement and retention across all levels of study. While this could be as simple as projectors or interactive displays to enable students to access and engage with their learning materials, many institutions are going way beyond this. Virtual classrooms, online assessment systems and intuitive collaboration tools are enabling students to access learning materials wherever they may be, working independently or in small groups, while allowing institutions to reach a wider audience too. While research suggests hybrid learning continues to be popular with students, the experience for some hasn’t always been of the highest quality. A few years down the line from those initial Covidinspired investments in hybrid tools, the focus for many institutions, particularly at the higher and further education level, is ensuring the technology is in place to deliver a high-quality experience. This could include multiple cameras in lecture spaces and auditoriums to capture multiple feeds for a more engaging presentation, highend microphones and speakers so students can clearly hear what is being said, and streaming platforms that allow students to ask questions and engage with the subject matter. The tools to deliver this experience consistently and reliably will be evident in Hall 2 of the Fira. Collaboration solutions for the enterprise space will be on show too. As workers continue to embrace hybrid and remote working, unified communications technology is crucial to creating a cohesive, productive and satisfied workforce. Videoconferencing systems, wireless content sharing tools, interactive displays and whiteboards are all being utilised to facilitate collaboration and bring teams together. But, while this more visible side of UC takes a lot of the attention, much of the innovation is happening behind the scenes. Cloud and data technologies are transforming how enterprises manage their estates, providing valuable information on how buildings are operating and if spaces are being fully utilised. Remote management of devices is also helping to ensure a reliable, consistent experience for users who increasingly rely on UC tools to carry out their daily tasks. Zoom, Cisco, Google, Jabra and Microsoft continue to lead the way when it comes to communication and collaboration tools, while Clevertouch, ViewSonic and Avocor offer those allimportant display solutions. On the audio side, QSC and Shure have tools for rooms of all shapes and sizes, from simple microphones and headsets to fully integrated solutions.

‘Brands: The New Broadcasters’ is the title of this year’s Content Production & Distribution Summit, recognising how major brands and corporations are increasingly using high-end technology and professional broadcast companies to create exciting and informative content and deliver it directly to their customers and stakeholders. Sessions begin with a look at why broadcast vendors Tom Morrod of Caretta Research will be sharing the latest data around the are now seeing strong convergence of pro AV and broadcast growth in serving clients in the fast-growing converging market that is becoming AV broadcasting. Tom Morrod, cofounder and research director, Caretta Research, will then provide the hard data that demonstrates where broadcast and pro-AV technologies and clients are converging, before being joined by Lorenzo Zanni, head of knowledge, IABM, along with system integrators and end users to interrogate that data. The summit will also welcome brands that are already active in the content creation and distribution space. Michael McKenna, CEO and director of VP at Final Pixel, will discuss his work with Oracle Red Bull Racing on Formula 1’s first virtual production shoot. Filmed in a VP studio in Wakefield, UK, the film, which was used to launch Red Bull’s newest car, takes viewers on a breathtaking road trip across the US. Indeed, virtual production will be explored in detail during the full-day event, produced in association with IABM. “The hype is gone, the hype is over,” said summit chair Ciarán Doran. “Now you’ve got the people who are doing it, making it happen. And that starts to take us down the road of democratisation of content creation. You can be anywhere, your talent can be anywhere, your location can be anywhere, but the content looks like it’s everywhere. And from that, we evolve into the art of storytelling. Because regardless of what your technology is like, you need really gripping stories to engage people.” How broadcaster manufacturers and broadcast facilities are addressing the pro AV market will also be explored. “It’s no longer ‘let’s dumb something down so that it’ll fit into that market’,” Doran continued. “They don’t need to do that anymore because AV broadcast is now reaching up to acquire the content quality, both technical and creatively, of that service provider.”

Tech Tours programme expands for 2024 ISE’s Tech Tours are back for 2024, offering more opportunities than ever to explore behind the scenes of major AV installations across Barcelona. Nine tours have been confirmed for this year’s programme, starting with the First Official Exhibition of the 37th America’s Cup Barcelona 2024 and the Plató Nou Virtual Production Studio on 30 January. At the America’s Cup exhibition, guests will witness a replica of the famous trophy that nations have strived to win since 1851 alongside a giant LED screen and an immersive 360 space, before taking in the 100-screen America’s Cup timeline exhibition. Merging authentic and digital worlds in real time, Plató Nou Virtual Production Studio in El Poblenou neighbourhood will present technological innovations such as a large LED volume, production lighting, media server and processing. A mini-workshop will allow guests to test out the on-site virtual production technology. The next morning, guests are invited to the Cines Filmax Gran Via, the only cinema in the world that has three 4DX screens in the same multiplex, together with one ScreenX for the ultimate in cinematic experience. In the afternoon, Layers of Reality and IDEAL Barcelona will share their curatorial and production insight at two new locations: Tutankhamun, The Immersive Experience at IDEAL Barcelona; and Dragons Immersive Virtual Reality Experience at Casa Amatller Digital Museum. Both will showcase immersive, interactive and VR technologies. Thursday kicks off with Data-driven art at Gaudí’s Casa Batlló. Guests will hear how AI-driven artwork by digital artist Refik Anadol was AI mapped onto the mesmeric façade, measuring 32m high by 14.5m, for a single evening. Then, a non-fungible token (or NFT) of ‘Living Architecture’ was sold at Christie’s New York for $1.38 million. Later that day, a small group of ISE guests will get the unique chance to step inside a real surgical operating room at a top Barcelona hospital to see its inner workings and learn how audiovisual

On the final day of ISE, guests will be able to experience the architectural and design wonders of L’illa Mall in the morning. There is also a visit to Barcelona Supercomputing Center: New MareNostrum 5 0. MareNostrum 5 is the next-generation quantum supercomputer at the new 12,000sqm headquarters of the Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC). For the first time, ISE is also hosting a post-show Tech Tour on Saturday 3 February. The Barça Immersive Tour at Camp Nou is a 2,300sqm temporary museum that has been meticulously curated, designed and integrated by Mediapro Exhibitions. ISE guests will be taken through the technology inside a 500sqm immersive space that features a 360° production, utilising deepfake technology to recreate football legends like Cruyff, Iniesta and Messi.

Rewarding stand design excellence The Stand Design Awards will take place on Thursday 1 February, recognising the very best in stand design efforts from the ISE 2024 show floor. The event is organised by EXHIBITOR magazine, with editor Emily Olson and associate editor Ben Barclay completing the initial round of on-site judging to select the finalists. Sofia Crespo to deliver ISE Keynote and Casa Batlló projection mapping

Pioneering visual artist Sofía Crespo will deliver an ISE Keynote at 13:15 on Thursday 1 February. She has also been invited to create a mapping on the façade of Gaudi’s Casa Batlló on the Sunday before ISE opens. Her latest piece, sponsored by ISE, is titled ‘Structures of Being’. It presents nature as an evolutionary process of infinite creativity, while creating a parallel with Gaudí’s practice. Crespo will take viewers on a contemplative journey through the evolution of life, immersing us in the materials, beings and natural phenomena present in Casa Batlló. This piece is described as a harmonious symphony that invites the viewer to feel the profound beauty of existence. The music, created by Robert M Thomas, a recognised generative composer, features local performers, including organist Juan de la Rubia and the Cosmos string quartet. Crespo and Thomas have collaborated closely to create a unique work of art, guiding their creations with their own algorithms but with a common goal: to connect viewers with the present through nature.

Born in Argentina, Crespo is a pioneer in merging biological themes and artificial intelligence in unique audiovisual works. Her work has been exhibited in institutions such as Kunstverein Hannover (Germany) and Fotomuseum Winterthur (Switzerland), as well as in public spaces such as Times Square in New York. She has received multiple awards, including the Falling Walls - Art

Transparent LED display to transform South Access of Fira for ISE 2024

Barcelona’. This AI-based replica of his creative mind will take the audience on an immersive journey through his thoughts. A distinctive aspect of the performance involves merging his AI mind with that of a bee, aiming to redesign and transform the city of Barcelona into a symbolic hive. The transparent LED display is based on the Muxwave M3 LED screen with a 3.9mm pixel pitch and offers the flexibility to adapt to various surface geometries. Sono, entrusted with system design and installation, will integrate more than 950 tiles of transparent screen into the glass façade. Ventuz and Realtime Department are closely engaged with the ISE 2024 team to ensure a seamless bridge between programming and onsite installation for the exhibition. A Ventuz Runtime dual server cluster will deliver engaging visuals to the LED wall while the Ventuz Multi-GPU cluster will allow the content to be played out with fewer servers, reducing initial hardware costs. Mike Blackman, managing director of Integrated Systems Events, said: “As the world’s attention turns to Barcelona for ISE 2024, we are thrilled to showcase the very best of pro AV and digital signage with a stunning new entrance to welcome attendees from all over the world to our 20th-anniversary edition.” Marc Serra, venue services & infrastructure director of Fira de Barcelona, remarked: “The installation of this transparent screen on the façade of our venue is a clear example of how hosting leading events in numerous industries has a major impact on the city and on our institution. It also illustrates Fira’s ongoing quest for innovation, the use of new technologies, and excellence. With the new infrastructure, Fira once again sets itself apart as a leading institution that hosts the best events and has the best venues.”

AVIXA is bringing a non-stop week of inspiration to ISE 2024

At ISE 2024, AVIXA will host a packed programme of learning and networking, including interactive sessions with thought leaders at Xchange LIVE, a livestream of AVIXA TV from the show floor, and much more

AVIXA Xchange LIVE will return to ISE with four days of sessions on stand 4G300

AVIXA Xchange LIVE

AVIXA Xchange LIVE (stand 4G300) will return to ISE with four days of sessions covering disruptive tech, environmental social governance in AV, professional development and much more. Xchange LIVE will also host daily meet-ups to mingle with peers and build new contacts. On Wednesday 31 January, the session ‘Is AI Biased?’ will discuss how AI plays an increasingly pivotal role in shaping our lives, from decision-making algorithms to personalised recommendations. However, as AI systems become more integrated into our society, concerns about bias in these systems have come to the forefront. This session will dive into this complex issue. Also on Wednesday, the session ‘How Can we Make Pro AV More Sustainable?’ will highlight the benefits of lifecycle analysis, responsible sourcing and upcycling. Panelists will share their perspectives on how ‘green use’ of AV and IT equipment can be organised, managed and monitored. On Thursday 1 February, the session ‘How EdTech Can Enhance Social and Emotional Learning in the Classroom’ will focus on how success in education depends on cultivating not just cognitive abilities, but also emotional wellbeing and character fortitude. Qualities such as curiosity, compassion and courage are vital for shaping well-rounded individuals. Panellists will discuss how

developing social-emotional learning (SEL) with the help of digital tools can support learners’ healthy integration into society. View the full lineup of Xchange LIVE sessions at www.iseurope. org/avixa-xchange-live.

AVIXA TV

For the first time at ISE, AVIXA TV will broadcast live from the trade show floor from Monday to Thursday (stand 4G300). Hosts Samantha Powell and Ben Barnard from AVIXA will be joined by thought leaders to discuss the latest trends, opportunities and challenges in the pro-AV industry. AVIXA TV officially launched in spring 2023 to bring inspiration, education and information to the global AV community. In addition to covering shows such as ISE and InfoComm, AVIXA TV is the home for video content showcasing innovative AV projects as well as breaking down the latest technologies and fundamental systems in an accessible way. In the lead up to ISE, people can tune into the podcast Backstage Pass: ISE on AVIXA TV to get a glimpse of what to expect at the big show. Visit www.avixa.tv. The first episode features ISE managing director Mike Blackman and futurist Amelia Kallman.

Conference programme

The vast conference programme at ISE is produced by AVIXA and CEDIA with

partnering associations and subject matter experts. It covers everything AV, from smart buildings to control rooms to live events. On Friday, AVIXA and CEDIA will host a three-hour Sustainability Workshop to address the importance for our industry of the need to adapt to the global issues of climate change, nature loss and social resilience. This workshop aims to help ISE delegates understand the challenges, think through with others the impact and opportunity presented by these challenges and how they can profit from these opportunities. Delegates will be guided through an interactive and practical workshop, working with peers from the industry. The workshop will be led by Simon Brown, a business owner, entrepreneur and adviser who has focused on sustainable innovation for the past 20 years.

Tech Talks

Tech Talks, delivered in English and Spanish, will present the latest on AV tech and trends. These free sessions will explore topics such as in-camera visual effects in TV programmes, using video games to treat and rehabilitate patients, and much more. Catch the Tech Talks on the ISE Main Stage in Hall 4 from Tuesday to Thursday. Get the full details of the ISE conference programme at: www.iseurope.org/ ise-2024-conference-programme.

With eight amplifier channels the MXA-8400 is designed to complement the company’s multichannel processors, the MP-40 2.1 and MP-60 2.1, which decode up to 16 output channels for immersive Dolby Atmos and DTS-X home cinemas. The MP-40 and MP-60 were recently updated to add the latest HDMI 2.1 and Tidal Connect including Dolby Atmos Music. —anne morris www.steinwaylyngdorf.com

Taking centre stage on the Beta Three stand in Hall 7 at ISE 2024 will be the EX42, a seven-unit, two-way inverted full-range plastic speaker. It adopts a modular structure design and is equipped with dual 4in woofers and five silk-dome tweeters. The shell is made of ABS. Not only can the EX42 be used on its own as a single pointsound source, but different combinations can be put together to adapt to the sound reinforcement needs of different spaces. In addition, Beta Three says that using Dirac Live optimisation software to intelligently evaluate array performance and optimise sound also improves the unit’s consistency. As well as showcasing its EX Series, the Chinese manufacturer will also be promoting its Flow meeting solution and R Series portable battery speaker at ISE. —kevin emmott www.beta3pro.com The EX42 is a sevenunit, two-way inverted full-range modular plastic speaker

Hybrid connectivity for data and power

Kscape’s Rail S combines audio and lighting in one package

K-array, Kgear, Kscape | Stands: 2J300/7F300

All on board for compact Rail S

Building on the success of its Rail professional lighting and audio system, K-array brand Kscape has lined up Rail S for an ISE launch. Rail S squeezes the established technology into a more compact form factor for easy installation and greater potential to scale. With its 1.2m design, the linear architectural lighting system combines projectors, changeable optics and other lighting options with professional audio. It incorporates K-array’s compact Lyzard KZ1 loudspeakers to deliver professional-grade audio, along with Casambi-controlled lighting. The company says that combining both into one device enables the integration of professional audio and lighting technology with no compromise on aesthetics. —kevin emmott www.k-array.com

Aiming to provide connectivity across the audio and IT sectors, the HC72P25 hybrid cable from Germany’s Klotz AIS provides data and power for a wide range of applications. Two flexible Cat7 lines can connect components of digital audio networks such as Dante, CobraNet and EtherSound, or transmit DMX control signals based on the ArtNet, MA-Net or Pathport protocols. The double shielding (Al-foil and dense copper braiding) of the Cat7 cables provides interference-free transmission of high data rates up to 10GB over long distances, even in electromagnetically influenced environments. For Adamson, RCF and JBL sound systems, the HC72P25 hybrid cable can also be used in a Cat+audio+power combination. One of the two Cat7 lines is assembled with XLR 3p connectors instead of RJ45, providing an exact 110 Ohm characteristic impedance for the Cat7 cable. —kevin emmott www.klotz-ais.com

Executive Profile

Creating an ecosystem

Casto Cañavate of Presenting Show Partner KNX highlights the flurry of product announcements related to KNX’s ecosystem expected for ISE 2024 and shares the association’s plans for the show

Casto Cañavate, marketing manager, KNX Association

How would you assess the importance of the annual ISE show to KNX users and partners? The initial idea behind why KNX was created was the aim for devices from different companies to work together in one ecosystem. This has evolved to answer the need for technologies that can contribute not only to integrate all smart devices into one secure ecosystem but to create more sustainable homes and buildings. So our full focus as an association, including at the show, is now on how we are developing the benefits of having smart homes and buildings equipped with KNX for a more sustainable world. How will you be manifesting that emphasis on sustainability during ISE? One major way is that we will be using a sustainable stand that can be reused at future events; actually, the stand at ISE will be used again at the next trade show, Light+Building, in March 2024. At the stand, we will also showcase energy management applications that can optimise the use of energy and reduce our CO2 footprint in KNX solutions. Will any of your representatives be participating in conference events at ISE? The one I can reveal [at the time of writing] is that Franz Kammerl, president of the KNX Association, will be taking part in a session entitled ‘A New Era is Coming’ during the Smart Building Conference, which will look at the evolution of Internet of Things technology within smart homes and buildings. Can you give us some details of companies who will be participating in your stand in Hall 2? We will have more than 20 manufacturers involved in our booth, including HDL Automation, MDT technologies, Weinzierl Engineering, PEAknx, IT Gesellschaft für Informationstechnik, Theben, Eelectron, HMS Networks, HPE (Aruba Instant On), Accordia, Guangzhou SeaWin Electrical Technologies, Guangzhou Tantron Electronics, Interra Technology, Berghof, Cascoda, and Q-SYS. The range of companies involved means that it will be a great opportunity for AV professionals to visit us and find out how they can start working with KNX. They will also be able to discover the ways in which KNX enables the creation of one sustainable ecosystem.

IoT has been a major focus for KNX recently. How will we see that reflected at ISE? Following on from the KNX IoT third-party devices (KNX devices that help with connecting IoT applications and solutions), KNX IoT Point API devices were presented last year, and there has been a great amount of interest in the technology, which makes it possible for KNX and non-KNX solutions to be used in the same installation, in general. For example, what we have seen in the past month is that KNX members are accepting and adopting this into their developments. We expect that a great number of KNX members will be showing their newest device developments this year. One of the trends that has worked in favour of IoT adoption is that it’s now much simpler to develop products than it used to be. You’re now looking at maybe two or three weeks of software development, and you can use the same devices to apply them to different applications or technologies. That also makes for a lower development cost, so that’s obviously beneficial for companies that want to work with different technologies. What are you personally most excited about ahead of this year’s show? I am looking forward to encountering some major new innovations, which I haven’t really seen many of since before Covid happened. I am talking here about things that are very different and surprising. Do you expect that some of these innovations will involve AI? Of course, there is a lot of activity happening around AI, but so far I have not found a lot of what I would call ‘real AI’ with intelligence behind it. I do hope there will be a wave of great innovations involving AI at ISE 2024. I am looking forward to seeing a wave of great innovations involving AI soon. Stand: 2L300
