What can we expect from the all-new Mac App Store? The new features set to revolutionise how we use Mac apps in macOS Mojave Create, Work, Play and Develop tabs provide recommendations and expertise about apps within each of these themes.
Perhaps macOS Mojave’s most important new feature is the all-new Mac App Store. Previously, little love had been given to Apple’s official home for Mac software, but with Mojave’s introduction comes a brand-new Mac App Store featuring a fresh look and rich editorial content that will make it easier than ever to find great Mac apps. “Since its launch in 2011, the Mac App Store has become the single largest catalogue of Mac apps and today remains

the safest and best place to get Mac apps for users around the world,” says Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing. “We are excited to usher in a new era for the Mac App Store with a beautiful new look, unique editorial content and emphasis on human curation that complements the ways people are using their Macs today.” The redesign is based heavily on the successful iOS App Store overhaul that
we saw in iOS 11 last year. A Discover tab will feature compelling stories, in-depth interviews, helpful tips and collections of must-have apps. Discover will update every week to help users find the best Mac Apps through stories and collections. The Top Charts feature will make sure you’re up to date with what’s trending in the world of desktop apps too. Mac users will also be able to explore new Create, Work, Play and Develop

tabs to find the perfect app for a specific project or purpose – whether that’s music, video or photography apps, all the way to business utilities and games. Moreover, within each of these tabs, you’ll find helpful recommendations and expertise about apps. These tabs will also help you make the most of apps you already have with tips and tutorials that even the most expert users will find useful.
All the leading apps It’s long been a major frustration for Mac users that not all leading apps have been present in the Mac App Store, but that all changes with macOS Mojave. Huge names like Adobe and Microsoft are joining the fun, along with Mac favourites BBEdit from Bare Bones, Transmit from Panic, Lens Studio from Snap Inc. and Houseparty, among others. Microsoft is bringing its whole Office suite onto the Mac App Store in a long overdue move. As much as we love Apple’s iWork collection, access to Office 365 is a necessity for most. “Office 365 provides the best of both worlds for Mac users – a productivity experience that is unmistakably Office, but specifically designed for the Mac,”

says Kirk Koenigsbauer, corporate vice president at Microsoft. “We’re excited to provide our joint customers with easy access to downloads and updates by bringing Office to the newly redesigned Mac App Store.” Adobe is only releasing Lightroom CC to the Mac App Store, but it’s still a step in the right direction, and points at further integration in the not too distant future. “Adobe is looking forward to bringing Lightroom CC, our industry-leading photography service, to the Mac App Store in the next year,” says Bryan Lamkin, executive vice president and general manager of Digital Media at Adobe. “We’re also excited to join the Mac App Store with its new redesign that not only makes it easy for users to find apps like Lightroom CC, but also further showcases the great work of creators and developers.” It’s been seven years since the Mac App Store was launched in OS X 10.6.6 Snow Leopard, and during that time it hasn’t evolved at the speed we imagined. That finally looks set to change with Mojave, and we’re excited to see these new features in action. Hopefully it ushers in a golden age for Mac apps.

Apple signs deal with Oprah Winfrey Apple news
Apple continues to flex its muscle in the TV and film market in readiness for its expected charge at Netflix and Amazon Prime by snapping up US megastar Oprah Winfrey on a multi-year partnership. Tim Cook has kept pretty quiet about the deal other than to confirm that Winfrey and Apple will create original programmes that embrace her ability to connect with audiences around the world. Winfrey’s projects will be released as part of a line-up of original content from Apple. We’re still in the dark over how Apple intends to release that, but it is now estimated that it has spent over $1 billion in preparation. 10

Apple Books, an all-new iPhone and iPad app that aims to make discovering and enjoying books and audiobooks effortless, is set to replace iBooks in iOS 12. “Apple Books will inspire a love of reading – it puts a world of books and audiobooks right at your fingertips,” says Eddy Cue, Apple’s senior vice president of Internet Software & Services. “This is our biggest books redesign ever, and we hope this beautiful app inspires both customers and authors alike.” New features in Apple Books include a Reading Now tab, a dedicated Audiobooks section and a redesigned Books Store that takes cues from the App Store’s recent revamp.

The ten winners were Florence, Agenda, Calzy 3, Alto’s Odyssey, Bandimal, Frost, Oddmar, iTranslate Converse, Playdead’s Inside and Triton Sponge. “This year’s winning apps and the developers behind them have created some really innovative and inspiring apps,” says Ron Okamoto, Apple’s vice president of Worldwide Developer Relations. “The Apple Design Awards have been a launchpad for developers who’ve made beloved apps on the App Store, like Procreate, Zova, Djay Pro and Monument Valley, and we know these winners will continue that tradition.”
Apple opens Health Records API to developers Health
Apple has released a new health-focused API to developers in an effort to create an ecosystem of apps that use health record data to better manage medications, nutrition plans, diagnosed diseases and more. Health Records is currently in use in 500 American hospitals, and now patients will be able to share that information with third-party apps. “Now, with the potential of Health Records information paired with HealthKit data, patients are on the path to receiving a holistic view of their health,” says Jeff Williams, Apple’s COO. “With the Health Records API open to our incredible community of developers and researchers, consumers can personalise their health needs.” 188

here’s no point in resisting Siri. It’s not going to go away, so you might as well embrace the technology and use it to your full advantage. You don’t even have to talk to Siri to get the most out of it and have it working tirelessly behind the scenes on your behalf, as we will now demonstrate.

How to enable Type-to-Siri 1
If you are self-conscious about talking to Siri then you’re not alone. Thankfully there is now an option in iOS to type your queries instead of speaking them. To enable it you will have to explore the Accessibility section within Settings.
1Go to Settings
Start off by launching the Settings app and then tap on ‘General’ and scroll down to the ‘Accessibility’ section.
2 Enable option
Now scroll down and tap on the ‘Siri’ option and you will see the option to ‘Type to Siri’. Move the slider on to enable it.
3 Type to Siri
Now, when you long-press on the Home button to launch Siri you will see the option to ‘Type to Siri’ instead of speaking.
Improve Siri functionality 2
Siri has its own dedicated section in Settings where you can enable functionality for individual apps. You can also educate Siri about yourself, including key locations and family members. Here’s how it’s done…
1Open Contacts 2 Add more details 3Select card Open your Contacts app and then find your own personal contact card in your directory. Tap to open it.
Tap the ‘Edit’ option in the top-right corner and then add in as many details as possible, including family members.
Go to Settings>Siri and tap on the ‘My Info’ option. Now simply locate and select your personal card for Siri to use.
Get Siri event suggestions 3
We love the way in which Siri is deeply rooted in macOS to perform key features behind the scenes. For example, here we demonstrate how a gig was added to our Calendar app purely by purchasing tickets for the event online.
12
188
1Expand search 2 Enable option Go to System Preferences> Siri and then click on ‘Siri Suggestions & Privacy’. Tick all of the options then click ‘Done’.
Now, in your Calendar app, go to Calendar>Preferences> General and tick the ‘Show Siri Found in Apps calendar’.
3 Siri calendar
Now, any actions you perform that involve a date, such as booking gig tickets online, will be added to your calendar.
