Better BIRD PHOTOGRAPHY Improve your skills, step by step

welcome

“Sometimes the best light is to be found when there actually isn’t very much light available at all” We say it all the time – well, I know I certainly do, at least – photography is all about light. Yes, it’s a cliché, but that’s because, for the most part, it’s very true. Of course, other aspects of photography play a big role in what you are able to achieve – composition, storytelling and creativity, to name but a few, are all hugely important. Generally speaking, though, the better the quality of the light, the better the photo. But quality and quantity are completely different things, and sometimes the best light is to be found when there actually isn’t very much light available at all. That’s why the ability to take great photos in low light is very important. We’ve addressed this with the main feature in this issue, which looks at landscapes, astro and cityscapes. Turn to p34 of the magazine to begin reading it.

Elsewhere this issue, Simon Roy has looked at photographing birds from hides, covering all the skills and techniques required to master this challenging subject matter. Turn to p48 of the magazine. Meanwhile, Ewen Bell has put together an indepth guide to the easily overlooked craft of food photography. His expert advice will have you wondering why you’ve never before explored the creative possibilities it offers. Head to p64 to read it. We’ve also got shooting tutorials, interviews with leading professionals, an in-depth career guide, product reviews and industry news to keep you abreast of the latest developments, and to help inform your future kit purchases. We would still love to see your own images of course, so please upload them to our Facebook page at www.facebook.com/DigitalPhotographerUK. Matt Bennett, Editor matthew.bennett@futurenet.com

Bird photography is one of the most challenging fields to perfect, as anyone who has attempted it will attest. In the feature that starts on p48, professional wildlife photographer Simon Roy has put together a guide to the skills and techniques required, with a particular emphasis on working from a hide.

It’s easy to overlook food as a potential subject for photography, which is strange, as it’s full of colour, full of texture, and can be photographed in the comfort of your own home. On p64 of the magazine, Ewen Bell has put together his thoughts on how to create stunning images of food. His feature is bound to whet your appetite.

What do you like most about the image? The colours and the futuristic look of the buildings, the smooth water that creates the reflection of the skyline. I love the design of the footbridge.

Did you do much post-processing? For post-processing I didn’t do much. I darkened the highlights, brought up the shadows, introduced contrast, some colour and white balance correction and dodge and burn.

Image title: A slice of light “This was taken not long after sunrise at the Clifton Suspension Bridge in Bristol. I like to walk my dog early in the morning and try to coincide this with the sun coming up, so I can make the most of the golden hour in the city. This particular morning, there was a thin mist in the air, and as I made my way back across the bridge I noticed the warming rays of light slicing through.”
