espite all the advances in digital and colour photography, the magic of monochrome has an enduring allure. The act of seeing form, tone, light, shape and texture and using these as a way to express yourself is a powerful creative tool. However, there’s more to a successful black-andwhite image than converting a file to mono, so we asked our man in Skye Chris Rutter to reveal all. Turn to page 42. Our big interview this month is with the maestro of the street, Joel Meyerowitz. He’s one of my favourite photographers. Find out more about his life and work on page 86. In addition to our usual fab gifts, we’re also giving away DxO Optics Pro 11. Wow! Enjoy your photography...

I noticed this woman was not paying attention to what was going on around her, and was told that she suffered from Alzheimer’s. I kept shooting and talking until I got her attention. I used a black background and lit the picture using a flashgun with a Westcott softbox.
