Neil White is the author of nine novels, published by HarperCollins and then Sphere. These include the number one ebook bestseller, Cold Kill, and the Parker brother series.

American Crime Story: The People V. O.J. Simpson

U

tter the name “O.J. Simpson” and you’re guaranteed an extreme response, particularly at a social event.

“You’re like, ‘Oh, I’m writing this show about the O.J. Simpson trial,’ and the entire party shuts down,” laughs Scott Alexander, whose new series American Crime Story: The People V. O.J. Simpson recreates the media frenzy engulfing the 1994 trial of sportsman and Hollywood actor O.J. Simpson.

Then famed for his NFL career, plus roles in Naked Gun and Capricorn One, Simpson stood accused of murdering his ex-wife Nicole Brown and her lover Ronald Goldman. In the US alone, over 100 million people tuned in to watch the whole trial unfold live. Then, on 3 October 1995, Simpson was found not guilty, a shocking resolution to a landmark case in American history.

Like Murphy’s American Horror Story, ACS features a cast of A-list and less well-known talent, headed by Cuba Gooding Jr as Simpson himself. And as the Oscar-winning actor reveals, the role took its toll. “There was one day after filming that I went to my trailer and I couldn’t stop crying because I realised I never [considered the loss] for the Goldman or Brown family,” he says.

It’s not hard to see why. From evidence like the ill-fitting leather gloves to Simpson’s rubber-burning bid for freedom in a Ford Bronco, the whole trial is painstakingly recreated in ACS, which refrains from passing judgement (we won’t find any new evidence that would condemn or exonerate Simpson, who’s currently in jail for armed robbery). There are appearances by

reality TV maven Kris Jenner (mother of Kim Kardashian, played

by Selma Blair) and her attorney husband Robert Kardashian (David Schwimmer, sporting a white slash in his hair).

Leading the defence is Robert Shapiro, played by John Travolta, taking on only the second leading TV role of his career.

“I was worried at first that, wittingly or unwittingly, it would be sensational,” Travolta muses. “But [Ryan and Nina] assured me that it was about much more than just the sensation of what happened... They were right.” Meanwhile, American Horror Story regular Sarah Paulson plays prosecutor Marcia Clark.

“The amount of scrutiny that Marcia had to endure based on her physical appearance was horrifying,” says Paulson, who met the
