HIGH PERFORMANCE METAL SYSTEMS CHANGE THE WAY WE BUILD MIDDLE EAST CONSTRUCTION IS A CHALLENGING AND RAPIDLY CHANGING MARKET, WITH HUGE PRESSURES ON ARCHITECTS AND CONTRACTORS TO DELIVER EVER MORE COMPLEX BUILDING DESIGNS FASTER AND WITHIN TIGHT BUDGETS. INEVITABLY, THIS HAS LED TO A REASSESSMENT OF BUILDING METHODS AND A RAPID SHIFT AWAY FROM TRADITIONAL BLOCKWORK INTERIORS TO MODERN GYPROC HIGH PERFORMANCE PLASTERBOARD SYSTEMS THAT ARE MORE FLEXIBLE AND ENABLE CONSTRUCTION TO PROCEED FASTER AND MORE COST-EFFICIENTLY.

G

yproc systems combine a lightweight but strong modular metal framework with high performance plasterboard linings. They are used extensively in hospitals, schools, hotels and residential complexes to provide internal and separating walls, shaft and wall linings and ceilings, due to their unique ability to provide virtually any combination of performance requirements in key areas like acoustics, fire resistance, impact resistance and mold/moisture resistance. MORE EFFICIENT SOLUTIONS Gyproc systems are engineered to provide specific levels of performance and are much faster, simpler and

8

cleaner to use than traditional masonry alternatives. Their light weight makes them easier and more efficient to handle and transport, especially in high rise constructions where access can be limited, while their high performance-to-thickness ratio and dry-build technique means space can be used more efficiently and buildings completed to tighter deadlines. Whilst initial component costs can appear higher than the blockwork alternative, associated cost and time savings throughout the build process mean that, even with all of the benefits, lightweight solutions generally deliver significant savings in overall build cost.

GYPROC

A BASIC DESIGN DECISION The decision to use lightweight internal walls and linings is one of the most fundamental decisions the architect can make, as it has a profound effect on the overall performance, comfort and safety of the finished building. The systems can also offer major savings in foundation and associated structural costs, due to significant reductions in the overall weight of the structure. Since issues such as fire performance and acoustics, for instance, require a ‘complete structure’ approach, the best results can only be obtained if the systems are integrated into the design from the outset. Failure to do so can involve expensive retrofitting later in the project with often inferior results and expensive delays for the contractor and client. Unlike heavy masonry construction, which often relies on the materials used and skills of the bricklayer to achieve a specific performance level, each individual system and component of the Gyproc solution is quality assured and tested to deliver a specified level of performance in respect of fire resistance, acoustics, impact resistance etc., ensuring ultimate peace of mind for architect, contractor and client. SUPPORT AT EVERY STAGE Technical experts from Gyproc generally work alongside the architect, from the initial design stages of the building, to develop a complete lightweight internal lining specification that meets the different performance requirements for different spaces, such as corridors; restaurants and meeting areas; hospital wards; school rooms and libraries; hotel bedrooms and leisure facilities, using the most cost-effective combination of systems. With their knowledge of local and national standards, and backed by the combined knowledge and experience of Saint-Gobain colleagues worldwide, these local experts will ensure that the finished specification meets every standard and performance requirement based on the building location, design, height and use. Where necessary, the Gyproc team will provide design advice and drawings and, once the project reaches site, full on and off-site technical

SINCE ISSUES SUCH AS FIRE PERFORMANCE AND ACOUSTICS, FOR INSTANCE, REQUIRE A ‘COMPLETE STRUCTURE’ APPROACH, THE BEST RESULTS CAN ONLY BE OBTAINED IF THE SYSTEMS ARE INTEGRATED INTO THE DESIGN FROM THE OUTSET support for day-to-day issues that may arise. Gyproc’s training specialists will also visit site, if needed, to provide installation training to ensure that systems can be installed quickly in line with best site practice and the latest safe working guidelines. LEADING THE WAY Saint-Gobain’s lightweight systems have been at the forefront of building development for many years, and continue to provide solutions for many of the world’s most complex and iconic buildings. Over the past 10 years or so, increasing recognition of the benefits offered in both speed and performance has led to their increasing adoption for projects across the Middle East – from ground-breaking high rise towers such as 23 Marina, Dubai and Doha’s Samariya Twin Towers, to the prize-winning Al Mafraq hospital, new schools and hotel developments like the Wave Muscat and KSA’s Al Khobar to name just a few.

CAPAROL: A FOR HIQUALITY, SUSTAINABLE PRODUCTS

s quality leader, we have a responsibility to sustainability. It is our duty to find a balance between economy, environmental compatibility and quality of life. This includes of course, the protection of the environment, the efficient use of resources and the creation of a comfortable living environment for the people. We want to contribute with our thoughts and actions, with our products and solutions. Caparol’s business priorities have always included finding solutions that best adhere to the growing concerns over the environment we live in. In 1957, we introduced high-performance thermal insulation systems under the name of ETICS/EIFS, standing for Exterior Thermal Insulation Composite System/External Insulation & Finish Systems. With one third of the worldwide CO2

emissions caused by buildings; we pioneered energy-saving insulation paint products. One of the critically important energy saving areas is applying ETICS/EIFS, ensuring that the energy used to cool buildings is maximized by sealing the heat out; saving up to 30-35% of building power consumption. With building thermal insulation now regulatory within the UAE and other GCC countries, our energy saving External Thermal Insulation Composite Systems (ETICS/ EIFS), has proven that they contribute substantially to reducing the carbon footprint. Over the past decade Dubai’s energy demand has increased in sync with the rapid urban development and population growth in the UAE. In order to limit energy consumption, the local authorities introduced building legislation (2001 and 2003) that prescribes minimum insulation levels for external walls and roofs. Thermal Insulation is the reduction of the effects of the various processes of heat transfer between objects in thermal contact. Heat flow is an inevitable consequence of contact between objects of different temperature. Thermal insulation provides a means to maintain a gradient of temperature by providing a region of insulation in which heat flow is reduced. In building construction, Insulating materials are assigned a quantitative measure of the insulating capability called the U-Value. The U-Value states how much heat passes through 1m² of wall surface with a 1ºC temperature gradient. The system consists of composite elements which are applied in layers on site. The system consists of: • Base Rail • Adhesive mortar • Insulation boards (Mineral wool) • Glass fiber mesh (Heavy Duty, Standard) • Reinforcing mortar • Primer coat • Intermediate coat • Top coat Accessories : Dowels, Corner Profile, Joint Sealant Tape, Expansion Joint

CAPAROL

Design Integration is the most important factor in green building design, hence, Caparol ETICS/EIFS should be specified at the initial stage of the project as the energy reduced can contribute into reducing the energy load of the building. This approach requires the whole project team to think of the entire building and all of its systems together, emphasizing connections and improving communication among professionals and stakeholders throughout the life of a project. It breaks down disciplinary boundaries and rejects linear planning and design processes that can lead to inefficient solutions. Even though an integrated-design approach requires more efforts at the front-end – a lot of time and energy will be invested upfront early in the design phase where you have maximum flexibility to impact the design. Indoor Air Quality is a growing concern in today’s world. Tobacco, cleaning products, cooking fuels, emissions from furniture and construction materials are identified as the major causes for indoor air pollution. Notably Formaldehyde is causing the highest concern while assessing Indoor Air Quality. The number of sources of Formaldehyde, within the indoor environment, is what makes the issue even more serious & defining. Formaldehyde is a known carcinogen, the exposure to which can lead to difficulties in breathing, eye redness, skin irritation and potential fatalities in the long run. To address the awareness in the UAE/Gulf region about sustainability, indoor air quality & harmful substances at home, CapaCare range was established. CapaCare sets Gold standards in eco-friendly interiors. CapaCare complies with Green Building Council regulations: • Completely odourless • Low VOC • Higher durability • Washable • APEO (Alkylphenolethoxylate) free

TROX X-CUBE: A REVOLUTION IN MODERN AIR TECHNOLOGY

T By Sami Akaydin, Technical Consultant, TROX Middle East

24

ROX is the global market leader in the development, manufacture and sale of components, devices and systems for the ventilation and air conditioning industry. With subsidiary companies in 28 countries on all five continents, 14 production facilities, and importers and representatives, TROX is present in over 70 countries. The spectrum of solutions is accordingly broad. Products and solutions are developed in close co-operation with the clients that combine energy efficiency, which is essential both from the ecological and from an economic point of view, with very high comfort and excellent functionality. Trox has won the Climate Control Award as best manufacturer, 2 years in a row for 2014 and 2015 and was also nominated for the GAIA awards 2015 which shows how much our direction towards sustainability is being recognized by clients and contractors alike. This is why superior energy efficiency was the guiding concept in the development of the X-CUBE.

Construction, insulation, low leakage, heat recovery, energy-efficient motors, and intelligent control systems work in tandem to provide levels of energy efficiency which not only meet but already exceed the existing and future requirements of the EC directive on energy-related products. With the special shape of the casing, the smooth surfaces, and the way in which the components are installed, the X-CUBE complies with the VDI 6022 guideline. Even the high-quality standard version meets the very critical hygiene requirements of the DIN 1946/4 standard. A special hygiene unit that complies with AHU Guideline 01 is available for the most demanding requirements. The air-handling unit (AHU) has always been the workhorse of the HVAC world. Whilst renewable energy devices and sophisticated control technology scooped awards for reducing carbon footprint of commercial buildings, the AHU kept working away behind the scenes. But in today’s environment, where only outstanding levels of sustainability are acceptable for the UAE’s most prestigious projects, this has all changed.

TROX

IN THE MOVE TOWARDS SIGNIFICANTLY REDUCED ENERGY CONSUMPTION, THE X-CUBE IS FIRMLY ON THE FRONTLINE, DELIVERING ENERGY SAVINGS THAT WERE SIMPLY NOT AVAILABLE TO SYSTEM DESIGNERS JUST A YEAR AGO. THE SOLUTION HAS SET THE BAR HIGH WHEN IT COMES TO MANUFACTURING QUALITY, ENERGY EFFICIENCY, FLEXIBILITY OF UNIT CONFIGURATIONS, FUNCTIONAL RELIABILITY AND HYGIENE. Matthias Kasprowicz, Regional Managing Director, TROX MIddle East.

TROX has developed from a component manufacturer and systems supplier to a company with “one-stop-shop” solutions. The level of interaction between various technical building services can make or break the whole system. This is why TROX offers everything from a single source. Its air handling units and ventilation components and systems complement each other perfectly. This results in maximum energy efficiency while the coordination effort during the design and installation stages for a project is reduced to a minimum. With the introduction of the innovative X-CUBE air handling units, TROX has set the benchmark for these products on the market. The proposed solution has set the bar high when it comes to manufacturing quality, energy efficiency, flexibility of unit configurations, functional reliability and hygiene. The same high standards apply to all product types in the portfolio. In the move towards significantly reduced energy consumption, the X-Cube is firmly on the frontline, delivering energy savings that were simply not available to system designers just a year ago. This is due to the fact that the X-Cube has recently been reinvented from the ground up. After a number of years of incremental improvements, the tweaking and tinkering stopped and every aspect of the design and construction of the X-Cube was approached with a clean slate. So what impact has this had? Four key areas have seen significant advances: • Motor efficiency • Filter design/performance • Physical construction • Single source compatibility

The low specific fan powers have been achieved in TROX X-CUBE AHUs with plug fans with an IE2 motor, and IE4 permanent magnet motors which ensure high efficiency even under partial loads. The aerodynamically profiled steel or plastic fan blades achieve the highest efficiency with the lowest noise level. The AHUs also incorporate EUROVENT energy Class A minipleat filters which reduce energy consumption considerably. Air filters are, of course, a necessary and compulsory requirement in air conditioning systems, however, the inevitable trade-off when employing particle or particulate filtration is increasing system resistance. It is estimated that 85 per cent of the costs produced by an air filter are energy costs accrued during operation, but recent developments in filter technology are improving efficiency. One of the 19 certification programs run by EUROVENT provides a scheme for independent testing and grading of filters. TROX is one of fourteen manufacturers taking part in the scheme, and the filters incorporated in the X-CUBE

design perform at the highest level designated by the standard. These components contribute to the AHU’s ability to exceed SFP targets for the unit whilst ensuring effective filtration. Energy efficiency performance is also assisted by the construction of the AHU cabinet. A seamless foam seal on each panel ensures the low leakage class is maintained, and this type of construction also removes the internal framing which in turn drops the resistance through the unit, further reducing the SFP of the unit. The panels and frames are also fixed using screws rather than permanent fixings, enabling unit sections to be dismantled and reassembled on site should greater access be required. Prefabrication was high on the agenda from the outset of the project, with both the designer and construction partner identifying this intention from the start. As TROX supplied the full air handling system, opportunities for prefabrication could be optimized, with improved compatibility of equipment throughout the system, for more effective operation and energy efficiency.
