PLAYING AGAINST THE FLYING GOALKEEPER How to reverse the numerical advantage? It has been observed that teams who play games of futsal at a high level always end up facing the so-called “Flying Goalkeeper or Keepers-line.” And what can be done to eliminate this “circumstantial numerical advantage”? Can you reverse this situation by making it unprofitable for the opposing team? What I call “numerical advantage circumstantial” emerged as a resource from the mid-90s, with the opening of the game rule, which allowed the goalkeeper to play with their feet. At first we tried to make the goalkeepers conform to the new feature, however, depinte some exceptions, it was not as fruitful since at the time most goalkeepers were not yet ready to perform this new task. Noting this, and the loophole in the rule, some coaches have begun to use outfield players to perform the task, selecting the best players to perform the function. And especially at the end of games where the team needs the result, so then the flyer Goalkeeper comes in action. Understanding this mechanism of action, we must stick to the methods to be adopted so that this situation does not have an adverse effect on our team.

The first check to be made is the distance that the opposing team uses the resource. If we are a relatively large court (from 32m x 18m) and the flyer goalkeeper is in the opponent’s half, the markup can be kept at home. A shot at that distance, theoretically, it is easy for the goalkeeper to make a save. But as there is a flyer goalie approach to the frontcourt, our concern must redouble. We can use two types of marking to delay the actions of the flyer goalkeeper: The “diamond” and “square”. “Diamond Marking” The diamond have a marking forward, where it expects the opponent to make mistakes, but that can be configured in a well-used if effective action. It should be that the pivot will be marking the flyer goalkeeper, and with it our two forwards should mark the pivot and wing of the opposing team, making a front line in the same scheme of marking is commonly called “pendulum.”, always the opposite wing man doing the cover of the ball with the pivot at center court. At the bottom of the court should be the defender called fixo and yes this should have increased attention in this type of marking, it is his task to mark the wing and the pivot. It should move according to the trajectory of the ball. If the ball is on the right wing, the oposite pivot posted on the back of the court and the right wing should be marked. If the ball is on the left wing, his opponent in the backcourt and the left wing should face the same pressure. Thus we are inhibiting the actions of players that could appear to be background-free dialing. 7

5 Against 4 www.scottishfutsal.co.uk

“Square” Marking In the square-shaped marking, the formation is like block marking, which is nothing more than a compact defence to that position to defend by zone. This defence is not passive, but must be done at the right time, because if it is poorly shaped it can be fatal to any team. Leading the pack is the pivot position and a wing. Behind is the defender and the other wing. As the ball is passed by the opponents the block moves following the trajectory of the ball. You can perform this action only if the entire block is in harmony, otherwise the open gaps will be easily found by the opponent. This action is often possible by an opponent who manages to slip a long pass on the diagonal. This type of marking is adopted by the most high level teams and is enables the real possibility, when it presents itself, to take the ball from the flying goalkeeper. When the goalkeeper passes the ball to a wing the ‘Square Marking’ moves in that direction of the ball and closing the passing lines to the flying goalkeeper if the opponent who received the ball will return it to the goalkeeper, this is the moment you should look into trying to gain possession of the ball. As the ball travels towards the goalkeeper, the marker that was in the middle of the court positions themself along the passing line between the goalkeeper and the opposite wing, forcing the goalkeeper to return the ball to the same wing that the ball came from, which at the moment is blocked by the first pass made by the flying goalkeeper.

Fixo or Goalkeeper Left Wing

Rigth Wing

The Square Marking has to work hard to close all the passing lines that the opponent team can find and avoid the keeper having a clear shot on goal.

Left Wing

Right Wing

Anticipate the pass could be a big risk but forcing the opponent team to make a mistake on the pass could also change the game situation in your favor.

Pivot or Wing Left Wing

Right Wing Fixo or Defender

So we have a situation of 1vs1, facilitating the opportunity to win the ball, which is configured in an effective action. Most teams prefer the ‘Diamond Marking’ rather than ‘Square Marking’ against the Flying Goalkeeper, but with lots of practice this square formation could work very effectively. 9

It is very important that the formation works to close all the possible passing lines. Avoiding the ball to reach the back of the court so that the opposite pivot can score a goal.

In both markings be careful and pay attention if the ball goes deep into the back of the court that a pass would not cross to the opposite wing, because he will be free to score in a goal from around 6 meters. To ensure that does not happen the “square marking should be at all times adjusting and always attentive to cover the players and cover the passing lines. Another situation that occurs is when the flying goalkeeper stands in the wing and not in the middle of the court. We tried to simulate some situations and it was found that for this type of situation the best markup to be adopted is that of the square marking. By: PdO

We must prepare futsal teams systematically to address this and other numerical disadvantages on court. Giving attention and practice to the types of marking will significantly minimise the danger of the attack so that these situations are not so bad, and may even become advantageous. Whatever type of training is applied it must simulate real game situations. The more often the characteristics of each situation are repeated and clarified, thee better they will be understood and the more optimal actions will be carried out by the players on the court.

Already we can imagine an atmosphere that is full of brightness and lots of emotions even before any step has been made towards a worldwide classic.. A great nation always waiting for the right time to show the world an event that is worthy of its greatness, and that could change the history of an emerging sport in the U.K. Surely this encounter will bring huge benefits for lovers of this sport and futsal worldwide may soon receive a confirmation for a classic between two great nations of great tradition in football, but this time it will take place on an English futsal court. Brazil and England, could be facing each other just before the Olympic Games in the city of Coventry, promoting futsal further in the United Kingdom. This friendly between the two power nations of football, will also have its turn in Futsal, helping the Head Coach Peter Sturgess to share more experience to his players and making England Futsal develop their work and create significant growth.

The futsal national team already has its great historical victories. And we believe that this moment will be ideal for further development and why not grow against a nominated nation like Brazil? Names such as Falcao, Neto, Gabriel Dias, Valdin and among others, could be present in this Olympic year in another historic event. Thinking of a victory against the current world champions would be a dream too big, but it takes a lot of guts to face Brazil and get a personal as well the collective challenge would be more than a victory. The England Futsal Team is increasingly seeking to improve their knowledge and improve they way to play. The path of experience it is ‘a long way to go, but you can win several short cuts when you face teams like Brazil, Spain, Italy, Russia and others. All Futsal lovers are waiting for the confirmation of this event and we hope that this friendly, England vs Brazil will provide the best Futsal in the United Kingdom. Futsal Fever desires to listen the roar of the English Lions!

Sito Rivera Sito Rivera is the current coach of the Romanian Futsal team and was able to share insight into aspects of the Futsal game that he has picked up over his long career in the sport. The Spanish born coach has a long list of achievments that has seen him in high demand for his expertise. 1 - How did you get yorself into the Futsal world? How come this sport has led you to the Romania Futsal National Selleccion? Three years ago I had offers to coach in Japan, Italy and Spain in first division, but I wanted the opportunity to gain more international experience, as it has been to participate in European Championships and the World Cups. I do not think I was wrong because the chance to experience the national team with club management of champions Deva, Targu Mures and Luparense has allowed me to improve in every way. 3 - What is most important to you in a football player, what is your vision of perfect player? Tactical intelligence, obviously linked to a technique, because without this it makes no sense that the player is very good physically but can not play the game properly.

4 - Romania has a Spanish style in Futsal thanks to your work, have you got a future project with the national team, or will return to Spain? In Romania we are covering stages, the first was to qualify the team for the European Championship and now comes the next thing is to qualify for the World Championships, from there I will decide if my future is linked or not to the Romanian Federation. 5 - What do you expect for the next World Championships as it seems that Futsal with a good development plan has increased the level of many other nations? I think Spain and Brazil, followed by Russia, Italy and Portugal are above this and will not vary, although it is true that nations without a tradition in futsal are improving.

Romania Head Coach

Sito Rivera Sito Rivera

I think that the system should not be hard to attack and must work hard with quality and choice of time to finish. So I think a system should move to 3-2 or 1-2-2 to 2-3. Rotations utilised dependent on the defensive positioning of the opponent.

In defense we must work both 1-2-1 dimond and 2-2 square, around 10 to 12 meters or maybe 15 meters, varying the aggressiveness of it but always with clear lines of pass should be blocked by the defenders and goalkeeper.

Fernando Larrañaga 1 - How was your start in the world of Futsal? The begening of all was year 1985, when leaders of Boca Juniors did offer me to manage the Futsal for the International Federation of Futbol Sala (FIFUSA). In that time FIFA was not involved with futsal, and I did not know the sport in that time that much and was a amazing challenger for me. 2 - How the sport has taken you to Argentina’s National Selleccion? I lived in Argentina and in 1986 when FIFA took over the responsibility of organizing the Futsal, Argentina through A.F.A - Argentine Football Association, organized the first Futsal tournament. I entrusted to direct the Club Atlético Independiente de Avellaneda. Then I became an assistant coach for the World Cup in Holland, then in Hong Kong world cup weformed a duo (two coachs). In 1994 I was appointed Chief Technical Officer of Futsal. Since that time until today I am honoured to be Head Coach from Argentina 3 - What is most important to you in a football player, what is your vision of a perfect player? The smart player, with your head up in anticipation of the game. The player you want is always willing to collaborate with their team mates, offering sacrifice and humility.

4 - Argentina has a Spanish style nell mui football thanks to his work, you have a future project with the national team, or Devera return to Spain? Futsal Argentina has a variable, because the feature of the Argentine player is different from the rest of the world, not better but different. In addition we now have a selection for the World Cup will have players mostly from Europe, Spain and Italy, with some of Argentina where futsal is amateur, so it’s not easy to form a team to play what I like, I’ll have to adapt to different modalities with different teams. I’m living in Argentina.

Argentina Head Coach

5 - What do you expect for the next World Futsal Cup once many others nations are getting much better with a good development? I think there are three levels of teams for the next world futsal cup. The group one have 7 or 8 teams, including Brazil and Spain. Then there is the second group are also 6 or 7, some of those could go to the first group, and the others go to the third group, according to the players who are in different generations. Teams are growing fastest in Asia. Those more likely to have in the world cup are Brazil and Spain, perhaps Iran will surprise as well. 6-Which is the better way to make the defense when it is attacked by the flying goalkeeper? Normaly the defense is raised by the attack with the goalkeeper for sure, if they play in formation 2.3 we defend most of the time in 2.2 or square defense. (page 48) If the opponent team play 3.2, then we have to defend in 1.2.1 or diamond defense. Always with the opposite wing where the ball is, closing the diagonal. (page 49) ‘‘ Thank you Futsal Fever and good luck for Peter Sturgess and England squad’’ .

Normaly, if they play in formation 2.3 we defend in 2.2 or square defense.

If they play 3.2, then we have to defend in 1.2.1 or diamond. Always with the opposite wing, where the ball is, closing the diagonal.

God’s Plan of Salvation Trust Jesus Christ today! Here’s what you must do: Admit you are a sinner. 1-“For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;” (Romans 3:23) 2-“Therefore, just as sin entered into the world through one man, and death through sin; and in this way death came to all men, for that all have sinned:” (Romans 5:12) 3-“If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.” (1 John 1:10) 4-‘‘For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.’’ (Romans 6:23) That means that no men can go to Heaven with sin. The men with sin goes to Hell Good works cannot save you?

1-“For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith in Jesus; and this not from yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not by works, so that no-one can boast.” (Ephesians 2:8-9) The Bible says there is only one way to Heaven

2-“But God demonstrates his own love for us in this, while we were still sinners. Christ died for us.” (Romans 5:8) 3- “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” (John 3:16) 4-Jesus said: “I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man comes to the Father (heaven) except through me.” (John 14:6) Through prayer, invite Jesus into your life to become your personal Saviour. Believe that Jesus Christ died for you, was buried, and rose from the dead. 1-“That if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus, and believe in your heart that God raised him Jesus from the dead, you will be saved.”(Haven) 2-“For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified; and with your mouth that you confess and are saved.” (Romans 10:9,10) 3-“For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.” (Romans 10:13) What to pray:

Dear God, I am a sinner and need forgiveness. I believe that Jesus Christ shed His precious blood and died for my sin. I am willing to turn from sin. I now invite Christ to come into my heart and life as my personal Saviour. “But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:” (John 1:12)

If you have received Jesus Christ as your Saviour, as a Christian you should: Talk to God in prayer every day. “And all things, whatsoever ye shall ask in prayer, believing, ye shall receive.” (Matthew 21:22) “All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:” (2 Timothy 3:16) “Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.” (2 Corinthians 5:17)
