1 Reading A. Listen and read. Genre: Fable A fable is a fictional story that is meant to teach a moral lesson.

The Ant and the Grasshopper The Ant and the Grasshopper lived in a beautiful grassy meadow. All summer long, the Grasshopper was relaxing in the sun, hopping about, chirping and singing. He would watch the Ant passing by every day. She was always dragging heavy ears of corn or balancing heavy grains of wheat on her head. ‘Why don’t you come and sing in the sun with me? Why are you always working so hard?’ asked the Grasshopper. ‘I’m sorry. I don’t have time to sing. I am helping to store food in the nest for the winter,’ said the Ant. ‘You should store food for yourself too.’

‘Why should I worry about the winter?’ said the Grasshopper. ‘There is plenty of food to eat right now.’ The Ant shook her head and continued her hard work. Slowly, summer turned into autumn, and autumn into winter. When the winter came, the Grasshopper couldn’t find any food to eat. He knew he wouldn’t live to see the spring. Every day he would watch the ants sharing out the food that they had collected in the summer. Then, the Grasshopper knew that he had been wrong to relax and sing all summer. ‘I should have planned for the future.’
