MakeDSM Launches Phase One of Member Benefits

Trish Flaherty Barnes, President/CEO of FuseDSM has had a vision to create value for the vast number of manufacturing and industrial organizations within the Chamber’s footprint, since the day she came to FuseDSM, over five years ago. Her dream is finally becoming a reality.

In January, FuseDSM enlisted longtime manufacturing champion and national chamber leader Leisa Fox to create, develop and launch a subset of the FuseDSM membership base solely dedicated to organizations that “Make Things” and those who support them. This initiative will serve manufacturers in Central Iowa in curating and aggregating the enormous volume of information and resources targeted at the audience, leveraging buying power for common services and supporting the consistent sharing of best practices amongst this community. While the number of resources available to manufacturers is vast, given the pace at which things are changing and the pressures consistently facing manufacturing leaders, the greatest gift this organization can give this community that does more to benefit the Central Iowa economy than any other by:

Helping raise living standards more than any other sector, and

Generating more economic activity than other sector. In fact: o For every dollar of domestic manufacturing value-added, another $3.60 of economic activity is generated elsewhere across the economy. o For every manufacturing job, there are 3.4 jobs created in nonmanufacturing industries. o No other sector comes close to these numbers.

No other organization is solely dedicated to serving manufacturing leaders in Central Iowa, therefore, FuseDSM is proud to step forward and serve that role.

With the generous and pioneering spirit and financial support of the following amazing companies: BerganKDV, Bing Bang Marketing, Brick Gentry, Heuss Printing, The Iowa Clinic, Raine Recruiting, Spindustry, TrueNorth Companies and US Bank, MakeDSM launches on strong financial footing that will allow the organization to deliver best in class communications and resources from the very beginning.

With thoughtful and deeply researched programming and information, this group has spent the last three months building value for its yet to be recruited membership. The first resource to launch is its podcast, Makers. In this bi-weekly broadcast, Leisa interviews manufacturers and those that serve them in a quick 25 minute segment that is guaranteed to bring value to any of MakeDSM’s constituents. Click here to download and subscribe to the podcast. We are so grateful to Bing Bang’s Jon Schae er and Lori Gelhaar for their help in making this a professional and well-done. We’d greatly appreciate you giving it a listen and if you find it remotely entertaining, please subscribe and share!

Expect a full launch sometime before May 1st and an announcement of our first event to be held in July. You can visit our website at https://www.fusedsm.org/make-dsm (a work in progress!). If you serve manufacturers or are a manufacturer, please contact Leisa Fox at leisa@fusedsm.org or 515-979-8766. She’d love to have you on the podcast!

Sheri Schneider will be available to address any additional questions attendees may have.

The economic development committee has been busy strategizing about our next areas of town to focus our attention on. There is still work to be done in the Columbus Park area to build relationships and a sense of community. In addition, we are also hearing that some attention may need to be paid to other areas of the east side, specifically the fairgrounds area.

One thing we are quickly realizing is the importance of safety and security in helping to revitalize certain neighborhoods in our great city. This will take time and a concerted e ort from a variety of stakeholders to accomplish. We are proud to have a wide variety of voices represented on our committee including small business owners, real estate professionals, city council members and city economic development employees. If you would like to add your voice to our committee, please let me know at nocoastconsulting@gmail.com

- Dr. Ryan Anderson Co-Chair, Economic Development Committee
