Birds ·· In Pehuén Forest 28 species have been registered; 9 endemic to the temperate Chilean rainforests and 11 from the Southern Cone. Hummingbird and Chilean hawk nests have also been spotted, which is uncommon for this area.

The birds can be found living in the: ·· Old-growth forests, such as the chucao, the thorn-tailed rayadito, small hummingbird, the Chilean flicker, and the Magellanic woodpecker. ·· Shrubs and grassland, such as the house wrens, zorzales, southern lapwing, the shiny cowbird–common in all of Chile. ·· Or across the entire Bosque Pehuén territory, such as the Patagonian sierra finch, the striped woodpecker, or the Chilean pigeon.

Variable hawk (Geranoaetus polyosoma): It is not a small bird so it can easily be seen. It builds its nest with dry branches on treetops, where it lays two eggs. To hunt it dives from the sky at small mammals, birds, reptiles or snails. Dimensions: 44 cm tall / 55 cm wide.
