Introduction

Learning outcome 5- Personal Development Plan (PDP) documentation (journal, sketchbooks and research folder, in both digital and material format) of the unit and all enhancement activities and interdisciplinary collaborations undertaken including special workshops, lectures, study strips and extra-mural activities). Academic Portfolio Archive supplemented and preparation of CV.

This report is ARC 652, unit title Dialogues with Practise: Relationship between the creative practice of the studio and the professional context pf practice in the realisation of architecture proposition. In preparation of this unit I am going to reflect on my own past experiences of work. I will consider all experience of work regardless of the particular employing organisation. This will be from any sector of work, not just in architectural design and building construction, and included voluntary/charity work. Identify examples of work experience situations where I had to demonstrate ability in the following: communications, decision-making judgement, encouraging others, team working, coping with change, meeting deadlines and showing initiative. In those skills that I have had the opportunity to exercise some abilities, go to explain how they might be used in a career in architecture, design and the built environmental or a related area. The work will be illustrated where possible and included in my PDP for submission as part of the unit assessment.

Haibin’s Personal Statement & Portfolio Personal Statement I am clear that I want to pursue a Master’s degree in architecture because for me, it is very important to finish ARB Part2 and become a real architect for me, as I have always wished to become an architect since I was a child. My undergraduate study focused on architecture at the Arts University Bournemouth (AUB) and environmental art design at the Dalian University of Foreign Languages (DUOFL) in China from 2011 to 2013. During the 2 years of study of environmental art design (which is a course combining interior design, garden design and house design), I built up a good ability of sketch drawing and computer software skills (Photoshop/AutoCAD/3Ds Max etc.) Then I got the chance as the only student to take park in a 2+2 double degree project to become a student at AUB. I will graduate in summer of 2015 as 2:1 or even perhaps first class because my second year mark of AUB was between 66 and 68. I am interested in experimentation and innovative practice within a structured framework leading to Masters learning outcomes. Beyond the classroom, I won the second prize of Bournemouth Seafront Competition (Group work) and became an assistant curator for the MAP Exhibition 2014 in TheGallery, AUB library and Lighthouse. I am not only interested in Architecture but also love music, for example, violin. I got level 4 certificate in violin when I was 8. Moreover, I had 2 formal public shows in the university theatre in DUOFL. Furthermore, I was also involved in many activities such as Bournemouth University Chinese New Year Celebration, Dorset One World Festival. As a student ambassador in AUB, I helped at events like graduation ceremony and open days. As an art teacher in Moordown community centre (Bournemouth), I try

to improve my teaching skill in order to teach children how to make better art work. I also travelled around UK and 10 countries in Europe, visited museums and galleries. All these experiences have helped me improve my ability for working independently, teamwork, good time management, problem-solving, leadership, listening or organizational skills which influenced and helped me develop my interest in creating good architecture. I believe these experiences will relate to my career path as well. My long term goals are to pursue a higher level of architecture, got more knowledge about sustainable architecture and use my knowledge to help the development of sustainable architecture in my country. I like AUB because there are many chances to collaborate with other courses and help me not only focus on architecture, but also on some relevant subjects such as graphic design and photography. I am looking forward to challenging my thinking with fresh perspectives within the context of the professional, postgraduate (Part2) validation of the ARB and become an architect.


I have done some research before I go to Portsmouth. One of the reason why I put China ambassador Liu Xiaoming is we graduated at the same university in China, though he was graduated 40 year ago.

After read his biography, I realise I am so naive and there will be many challenges waiting for me in the future, university graduate is only the first step. On one hand, I am a little afraid to face future, because we do not know what will happen in tomorrow. On the other hand, miracle happens every day, as long as chase the excellence, success will follow you (3 idiots). The future will not be too bad. Therefore, I tried to plan what I might do in the future, so that let the plan and ambition lead me. Communications This is one of the most important skills among seven of them. Every job that I did need good communication skills. Such as the job like interpreter, counter and teacher is based on communication. Better communication make things different as well, customers or clients could get cross because of a not probably sentence or joke. What is more, sometimes people might get confused or misunderstand due to a not clear express. So, as a foreigner, in order to find a job in a foreign country, it is very important to learn the language that will be used.

Decision-making and Judgement Decision-making and judgement for me happened occasionally. For example, I have to decide what kind of art should I teach every week and how to let children play happily and learn something through art class, as well as satisfied their parents. Moreover, when I take customers’ orders, especially Friday and Saturday night, the phone keep ringing and customers stand in front of court queueing. I have to decide who should be served first. Because one of my friend believe if the customers like your food, they will phone again. So serve the people who come to takeaway is more important. On the other hand, another friend think, and many people would not ring again, so take the phone first and customers will keep waiting if they like the taste of the takeaway. Similar things happened with other jobs as well, to my point of view, there is no right or wrong. It is quite flexible and depend on decisionmaking and judgement.

At Bournemouth Chinese School, there are about 8 standard teachers, 3 assistant teachers, 4 administration staffs and headmaster so on. There are about 60 students this year. I started with volunteer and then assistant teachers, counter, art teacher, M1 class teacher, GCSE teacher. Team work like work with other staffs prepared for the Chinese New Year celebration and curated Chinese culture exhibition.

As a team, we encourage even the smallest effort. It is very important to stop finding fault with the wrong and applaud the right, children always make mistakes. There is an old saying in China, mistake is the mother of success, and everyone make mistakes. To students, I always say things like “your work was really neat”, “I can see you did a great deal of research on that topic, that’s fantastic.” Even if I feel dislike for a person or feel competitive towards them, there is always at least one thing about them that you can honestly say is positive.

As well as team work in China Student and Scholar Association Bournemouth University, I coved up with ticket design and other publicity strategy discussions. We successfully invited Bournemouth Mayor, Poole Mayor and Dorchester Mayor. During the rehearsal, everyone was working hard and trying to make sure every single detail like decorations to make the celebration better.

Coping with change Sometime, my leader suddenly phoned me and told me I have to go to work tonight to cover someone else. Even during working times, once it is nearly 11pm, I started to pick up and ready to go home, a drunken lady came in and ordered many food. Obviously, she cannot eat all the food and maybe she cannot afford it, so I was trying to persuade her to go home and call the police to make sure her safety. Another example is sometimes there are more students want to learn art class than I expect, though I prepared for a few more printed stuff, there is still not have enough material. Therefore, I immediately to decide teach another lesson which I prepared for next week instead of give up teaching this week.

Meeting deadlines Designer always have a deadline. For instance, there is no perfect in graphic design, every poster can be improved. So, it is very important for the time management to make sure designer has enough time to finish and to achieve a quite high level to make client satisfied and let most of public feel that is not too bad. Roman was not built in a day, meeting deadlines can be consider as give some pressure to the person and make sure the project is not endless. As a teacher in Chinese School, the deadline is the preparation of the lesson before next class. Sometimes, during the class some good teaching ideas came out, it is essential to spend enough time on it. However, nothing is perfect, everything is still have room to improve.

Showing initiative There is an old saying in China ‘Learning is like rowing upstream: not to advance is to drop back. ‘ So it is important to keep on top instead of behind. The key concept is to show initiative. Art is a subject that need initiative. For example, every class I will give student a template or finished work, but I do not want them to copy the template. Everyone is unique, a big difference between Chinese and UK education is Chinese education system want everyone build up their skill ability first instead of showing initiative, and we believe the initiative is an extra thing that people will get when they can well control their ability. However, it is not right in some circumstance.

Reflective ARC 650 Learning Outcome 1 LO1 I will demonstrate an ability to creatively research through design and develop an exploration of an architectural issue through a body of work. (GA1.1, GC3.3, 5.1, 5.2, 5.3, 7.1, 7.2, 7.3) LO1: Body of work as defined in the Learning Agreement, including all process work and the final presentation. • A report (will bind as A4 book) about the MAP project. • An app about the lighthouse, which to show the technique drawings, plans, elevations and sections. Moreover, Joe Walker’s music and interview videos will be included. Furthermore, trying to add panorama of lighthouse and connect it to plans and sections. (This could be LO2 as well) In this learning outcome, most work finished on time. A design report –A4 about research by design, MAP project (Music Architecture Poole Exhibition). This book include introduction content and conclusion, moreover, how this panorama application from zero to the first panorama has been made and then find the suitable software. Finally learn to use this software and system to proficient control them. The process is quite hard, there are about 15 application have been made and improved during 10 week. Due to the software is still not mature, even do not has undo button. It is quite hard to learn at the beginning. Fortunately, the Lighthouse application has finished on time and there are many good feedback from public. In addition, Arts University Bournemouth marketing staff and Lighthouse marketing is quite interested in this project. However, this technique is still in an early stage and still has considerable room to improve.

Reflective ARC 650 Learning Outcome 2 LO2 I will demonstrate an ability in the use of diverse methods of representation, documentation and communication from architecture, the fine arts and other creative studio practice. (GA1.2, GC3.1, 3.2) LO2: Variety of communication techniques and media, including written work. • A video about how the case will be made, the development sequence and the narrative. • Videos (short film) 1. 15-30 minutes long videos which is a part of MAP project to show whole year work of all architecture level 5 students. (Done but still need to improve) 2. Several small videos about interview of TheGallery staffs and students who helped MAP exhibition. • The written work is going to be the script of the case making animation. This leaning outcome is about representation and documentation. Thus, every time there is a presentation, the PowerPoint on that review has been documented into design book as a part of chapter 2. What is more, a 14minutes 48 seconds video which made during summer holiday been improved to 22minutes 23 seconds long. Some video clips added into the old video, for example the interview of Tom Walsh who is AUB gallery technician.

Reflective ARC 650 Learning Outcome 3 LO3 I will demonstrate an understanding for the qualities of materials and how this might inform their assembly and expression. (GA1.3, GC3.1, 3.2, 8.1, 8.2, 8.3) LO3: Use of materials and 3D making processes. • Use workshop to do a delicate case for the projector with different materials like MDF plywood and acrylic etc. The case and projector will try to setup and connect with Rianna’s installation. • Because this case is going to use laser cutting a lot. So, first step is use Sketch up and Rhino to build a 3D model, and then separate it into several layout and faces in order to use auto CAD to draw the details of it and transfer the file into illustrator so that the laser cut machine can recognize the command. A projector box has been made. As an assistant curator. Hang up frames, paint the wall and plinth, as well as laser cut hundreds of labels, all of these work is a part of this learning outcome There are 2 projector boxes have been made. One is a previous test version, has not been exhibited in exhibition. Moreover, many difficulty came out which have not considered before. For example, due to projector needs to sit on the plinth, also cables have to go into top part and out at top back part of plinth. The plinth is not only longer than arm, but also too narrow for people to touch cables from the bottom. So the final solution is use longer ruler tied with a string and cables together, then try to reach the keyhole which has been drilled. There are many similar problems came out when we setting the exhibition.

Developmental Comments: A very good material design and development for projection of animated work and film is evident, inclusive of influence from ancient Chinese lantern projection as written within LO4/ However, material quality and design could have been higher, and more thought through in terms of finish.

However, the essay title and concept changed several times, so the entire dissertation has to be rewrite again and again.

On the other hand, with the help of EAP (English for Academic purpose), the structure became much clearer and there is less grammar mistakes. Keep seeing EAP almost every week is what I can do so far. Moreover, an aerial version of essay has been done as well.

Developmental Comments: This is a well-researched and substantiated academic text, which for the most part reads well. Your research and variety of quotations related to the subject matter make a convincing argument for animation based upon the hands of a good designer, and also the relevance to the moving image for architecture. However, your grammar still needs improving for excellence in your written work, as it lets down as otherwise well crafted contextual study whereby the conclusion lacks higher level of insight and impact in comparison to the main body of text.

Chinese Naval Ships to visit Portsmouth Chinese naval ships to visit Portsmouth 09/01/2015 Three Chinese Naval ships will arrive in Portsmouth next week for a formal visit aimed at enhancing military understanding between the UK and China. Chinese Ambassador Liu Xiaoming and hundreds of UK-based Chinese residents will welcome the ships into the city’s Naval Base on Monday (January 12).

Heading the task group is the assault ship Chang Bai Shan, accompanied by the frigate Yun Cheng and the replenishment ship Chaohu. Chang Bai Shan will fire a 21-gun salute as she approaches the entrance to Portsmouth Harbour and a response will be fired from Fort Blockhouse, Gosport.

We are looking forward to welcoming our Chinese visitors to the operational home of the Royal Navy Commodore Jeremy Rigby Commodore Jeremy Rigby, Naval Base Commander, said: “We are looking forward to welcoming our Chinese visitors to the operational home of the Royal Navy. As with our ship visits abroad, these events are not only of great diplomatic significance, but also very useful militarily given that we share similar global challenges including counter-piracy, preventing conflict, protecting our citizens overseas and supporting UN peacekeeping efforts.”

The ships’ last port of call was Salalah in Oman and on leaving Portsmouth they will head for Kiel in Germany.

Crew members from all three vessels will be given tours of local attractions including HMS Victory, HMS Warrior and the Mary Rose and they’ll also be shown around the Royal Navy’s newest warship - Type 45 destroyer HMS Duncan.

During the five-day visit, senior officers from both Navies will discuss various maritime topics including recent counter-piracy operations across the Indian Ocean.

The two nations will also compete in badminton and basketball matches at HMS Temeraire in Portsmouth – the Navy’s home of physical training.

Ambassador Liu Xiaoming said: “The Chinese Naval ships will be visiting the UK after they have finished a counter-piracy escort mission in the waters of the Gulf of Aden. This will be the third visit to the UK by Chinese Naval ships, and the largest one.

Chinese naval ships to visit Portsmouth 09/01/2015 12 January, Monday morning. 7.00am drive from Bournemouth to Portsmouth, 9.00am arrived at Portsmouth HMS navy base. That day was really cold, though it was heavy wind, about 500 Chinese students and overseas Chinese are already there before sun rise. As a Chinese, it is a real happy and proud thing to see Chinese naval ships visit United Kingdom, because a hundred years ago, China was defeated by United Kingdom and lost Hong Kong and hundreds of tons of silver to UK. Now, it is a new age marks China is no long weak. The biggest one is the assault ship Chang Bai Shan. She was accompanied by the frigate Yun Cheng and the replenishment ship Chaohu at the Hampshire dockyard. After nearly one hour waiting, I am able to get on the frigate Yun Cheng and the assault ship Chang Bai Shan. It is very lucky to have a chat with navy and ask something about their sea life, Chinese navy are also pleased to answer the question I asked. Photo of the inside ship is not allowed, to be honest, it is quite like a no decoration train, surrounded with steel. However, it is my first time and maybe the last time visit a real assault ship, the feel of touching steering wheel is unforgettable. I am very pleased to have this opportunity. MAP Exhibition Review

This 6mm thick MDF box is ARC650 making project. After the exhibition, it became useless and been left in the corner for a long time. One day, I was inpirated by an exhibition and put light bulbs in the box to create a warm atmosphere during the night. I am delight that it can be reused and to be honest it looks very good in a dark space.

“I think different people have different problems and different relationships to the exhibition of their work. I am focusing on projections and 3D spatial views of the exhibition. The idea of making a panorama tour has been an idea since I was in primary school, although at that time, to own a personal computer was a luxury. However, time flies with today’s technology, and with the addition of my integrated 5000-word Research by Design dissertation on animation that informed my design work, this dream for me has now come true. I started to research the possibility of creating interactive 3D spatial images suitable for architecture in June 2014 before my first third year term started. Chinese New Year - Library

Another friend of mine asked me to help her about Chinese New Year celebration and exhibition. It is curated by Bournemouth Chinese School, Moordown Community Center and Bournemouth Library. The celebration is on 21 Feb 2015 also invited Mayor and Mayoress of Bournemouth and they confirmed to come. The poster is made by Shirley Kersey (Green Team Leader for Bournemouth Libraries) and Betty HW Yeung (BCS Governor). It looks quite simple because it was made by Publisher instead of Photoshop. I helped with floor plan design as well as exhibition area arrangement and information publish. For example, tradition Chinese culture posters design (next page).

The character Fú (Fok)meaning “fortune” or “good luck” is represented both as a Chinese ideograph, but also at times pictorially, in one of its homophonous forms, most popularly as a bat, but also sometimes as the cereal bran. It is also often found on a figurine of the male god of the same name, one of the trio of “star gods” Fú, Lù, Shòu. Mounted Fú are a widespread Chinese tradition associated with Chinese New Year and can be seen on the entrances of many Chinese homes worldwide. The characters are generally printed on a square piece of paper or stitched in fabric. The practice is universal among Chinese people regardless of socioeconomic status, and dates to at least the Song Dynasty (AD 960 – 1279). On the left hand side is 2 different but simiar type of Fok designed by Haibin for Bournemouth Chinese School. Printed 50 pieces on 20/02/2015, 80gsm paper 8 inch by 8 inch and 100 pieces 3 inch by 3 inch.

Chinese lucky phrases colouring (with prizes) is runed by Haibin on Wednesday 18/02/2015 in Bournemouth Library second floor meeting room. There are 2 session, one is from 12noon-1pm which 8 children and 6 parents attend, and another one 1.152.15pm which have 15 children. The workshop is to let children mainly from 4-8 years use their imagination and ability draw and learn some chinese characters and culture to welcome Chinese new year. It is not only free but also provide drinks and snack for children.

中国旗袍 Qipao/Mandarin gown

The cheongsam (/ˈtʃiːɒŋˈsæm/, /ˈtʃɒŋˈsæm/ or / ˈtʃɒŋˈsɑːm/) is a body-hugging one-piece Chinese dress for women, also known in Mandarin Chinese as ͡ pʰɑ̌ ʊ̯] Wade-Giles ch’i-p’ao), qipao ( pronounced [tɕʰǐ and Mandarin gown in English. The stylish and often tight-fitting cheongsam or qipao (chipao) that is best known today was created in the 1920s in Shanghai and made fashionable by socialites and upper class women. When the Manchu ruled China during the Qing dynasty, certain social strata emerged. Among them were the Banners (qí), mostly Manchu, who as a group were called Banner People (pinyin: qí rén). Manchu women typically wore a one-piece dress that retrospectively came to be known as the qípáo In 1930s, it was prevailed in Shanghai. Usually, they were made of silk and the whole dress was embroidered with pearls and other pretty decorations. Cheongsams draw the outline of women’s body,it became closer-fitting and more practical. But sometimes people make fake ones and put then up to sell.

摺紙 Origami

Origami (from ori meaning “folding”, and kami meaning “paper” (kami changes to gami due to rendaku) is the art of paper folding, which is often associated with Japanese culture. In modern usage, the word “origami” is used as an inclusive term for all folding practices, regardless of their culture of origin. The goal of is to transform a flat sheet of paper into a finished sculpture through folding and sculpting techniques. Modern origami practitioners generally discourage the use of cuts, glue, or markings on the paper. Origami folders often use the Japanese word kirigami to refer to designs which use cuts, although cutting is more characteristic of Chinese papercrafts. In China, traditional funerals often include the burning of folded paper, most often representations of gold nuggets (yuanbao). The practice of burning paper representations instead of full-scale wood or clay replicas dates from the Sung Dynasty (905–1125 CE), though it’s not clear how much folding was involved. Traditional Chinese funeral practices were banned during the Cultural Revolution, so most of what we know about Chinese paperfolding comes from the modern-day continuation of these practices in Taiwan.

Sunday Art School is runes by Haibin under Bournemouth Chinese School, time is every Sunday 3.15-4.15pm at Moordown Community Center for children age between 4-12 years old. The session is about some basic art drawing skill like sketch, colouring, traditional Chinese painting etc. ‘‘It is a very good opportunity to teach children, because when I preparing for the next lesson that I am going to teach, it is a challenge for me as well, because I need to sort out what are they going to draw, what material are they going to use, is there any risk that might happen etc.’’ says Haibin.

National History Museum

The Natural History Museum in London is a museum exhibiting a vast range of specimens from various segments of natural history. It is one of three major museums on Exhibition Road in South Kensington, the others being the Science Museum and the Victoria and Albert Museum. The Natural History Museum’s main frontage, however, is on Cromwell Road. The museum is home to life and earth science specimens comprising some 80 million items within five main collections: botany, entomology, mineralogy, palaeontology and zoology. The museum is a world-renowned centre of research specialising in taxonomy, identification and conservation. Given the age of the institution, many of the collections have great historical as well as scientific value, such as specimens collected by Charles Darwin. The museum is particularly famous for its exhibition of dinosaur skeletons and ornate architecture—sometimes dubbed a cathedral of nature—both exemplified by the large

Diplodocus cast which dominates the vaulted central hall. The Natural History Museum Library contains extensive books, journals, manuscripts, and artwork collections linked to the work and research of the scientific departments; access to the library is by appointment only. Although commonly referred to as the Natural History Museum, it was actually officially known as British Museum (Natural History) until 1992, despite legal separation from the British Museum itself in 1963. Originating from collections within the British Museum, the landmark Alfred Waterhouse building was built and opened by 1881, and later incorporated the Geological Museum. The Darwin Centre is a more recent addition, partly designed as a modern facility for storing the valuable collections.

The picture above is a sketch of Juvenile hammerhead shark. It is always a good choice to draw something about animals. Because as an artist, the inspiration is from things around us. For instance, many architecture shape came from creatures, the fin shape of the shark is created by nature, enhanced by thousands of years revolution.

Due to I am doing a cycle building at the moment, the sketch inspirited me, I know how to create a better building for bikes. Cycling is like swimming, the difference is one is in the water another one is on land. If you can image how the fish can swim in the model building, then it can reflect the project.

BU Student Center

The six-storey building, also the new home of the Students’ Union at Bournemouth University (SUBU), containing the SUBU offices, student advice centre and activities hub, and new radio studios and space for Nerve student media is open.

The entirely new building is a really good precedent study for CDP as well, due to it is the most carbon efficient building on BU campus and it is just next to AUB. Whatever the detail design or material choose is harmony with each other and standard is quite high.

Conclusion

This PDP can be considered the final piece of BA degree Personal Development Plans. Through 2 years work, compared with other PDPs, there is more personal thoughts rather than other person’s opinion. The graphic design is better than before as well, trying to make clearly text and images, so that reader can better understand this PDP. This PDP including personal CV, statement, blog and previous volunteer work and job. As well as reflective about ARC650 research by design unit. It is also have a relationship with the design project. Overall this PDP has been essential to my learning informing it in many different ways, helping to prepare me for practice. It also encourages me to develop my understanding in architecture.
