The Devil’sHighway
Aspromised, and sticking with the devilish theme from last month, I will recap our ride through eastern Arizona along US-191, formerly US-666, “The Devil’s Highway” in May of 2024. Originally designated US-191 in 1926, the portion of the highway that runs south from Sanders, AZ to Douglas, AZ, renamed as US-666 by the Highway Commissioner in 1934, after a petition from local leaders, because it was the sixth offshoot of US-66. The number 666 being associated with old Beelzebub himself; this began a litany of urban legends about the “haunted” highway that continue to this day. These include stories of a girl dressed in white that walks alone on the highway, only to disappear when one stops to offer help. Or the Skinwalkers that cause accidents and sometimes show up in the back seat of your car, strange disappearances, UFOs and packs of demon dogs that terrorize the region. The US-666 moniker was dropped in 1992, at it has remained US-191 since that time.
Having atotallength of 1,544 miles, US-191 is a north–south highway that runs in two major sections. The southern part runs 1,102 miles from Douglas, AZ on the Mexico border all the way to the southern edge Yellowstone National Park in Montana. The northern section picks up at the top of Yellowstone National Park via roads in the park, and runs 442 miles to Loring, MT, on the USCanada border. In all, US191 courses through Arizona, Utah, Wyoming and Montana.

We rolled out of Eagar, AZ (having arrived there

the night before from Williams, AZ) on the morning of May 13 and headed for Las Cruces, NM, which is located in south central New Mexico, about 45 miles north of El Paso, TX, and the Mexican border. It was a gorgeous day, with mild temperatures, and a brilliant blue sky peppered with puffy white cumulus clouds. The first part of the route would take us on a stretch of US-191 (formerly US-666, The Devil’s Highway) between Eagar and Three Way (AZ).
The 137 mile stretch that we rode courses through the 2.2 million acre Apache-Sitegreaves National Forest situated along the Mongollon Rim and is but a small part of the 516.5 mile portion of US-191 (the longest numbered highway in the state) that runs along the eastern side of Arizona. The first 100 miles or so of US-191 between Eagar and Morenci is designated as the Coronado Trail Scenic Byway. Named after the Spanish explorer Francisco Vasquez de Coronado, it lies along the trail he followed in 1540 as he searched for the “Seven Cities of Cibola (Gold).”
The ride started out in the rolling grasslands and wooded hills south of Eagar and Springerville and west of Escudilla Mountain. We stopped in the tiny town of Alpine at Tackle Shop Gas to top off our fuel tanks (oddly from an above ground bulk tank), before continuing on. From Alpine, we followed the
nearly 100 miles of magnificent mountain road twisties as we climbed up through the White Mountains, down through Hannagan Meadow, before climbing up in the mountains again. In addition to the fresh smell of the tall and abudant Ponderosa Pines and Pinion-Juniper trees, epic views abounded, but with very few opportunities to pull over on the shoulder-less road for photographs.

The Devil’s Highway is the type of road that us bikers live for. This was quite a challenging ride with steep elevation changes, tight curves, and switchbacks, and included several 10-mile sections with a posted speed limit of 10 mph! Considering that this is largely a mountain road in a somewhat isolated region, the pavement ran from just okay, to poor, to non-existant in some places. Areas of broken pavement an loose gravel were prevalent, but not impossible to navigate. The rider must know his bike and concentrate on the roadbed for safety’s sake! Understanding the challenges, this ride was as exhilerating as it was epic, offering amazing views of the mountains and meadows below.
Aswe made our way down into Morenci, a 20 mile stretch of US-191 took us directly through the Morenci Copper Mine. The open-pit copper mine is immense, covering approximately 80 square miles and producing more than 420,000 tons of ore annually. Expansion of the mine has required that 191 be re-routed over the years, with more changes coming. It is also very dusty, the temperatures had risen into the low 90’s and we, along with bikes, came out on the other end in rough shape. I
understand the necessity for the operation, but it is sad to see the scar that will forever be etched in the landscape.
Justaswe rolled out of the mine, a roadblock had been made by the AZ State Police that took us on a detour from 191 along Burro Road down to a

detour at the southern edge of Clifton. There, we were told that two Arizona Troopers were injured (non-life threatening) in a shootout with a male suspect. The man was from Arizona and was accused of murdering three family members (his mother and two sisters) on Mother's Day in Mississippi. The suspect was injured in the shootout but later died at a hospital in Morenci, one more tragic episode to haunt The Devil’sHighway!

From Clifton, we turned east on AZ-78 at Three Way into New Mexico, then took US180 south to Interstate 10 into Las Cruces. We rolled into our hotel around 4:00 PM, extremely hot, dirty, and exhausted! We managed enough energy to clean up and head over to Old Mesilla (via Uber) for a great and filling authentic Mexican dinner at LaPosta, chased down with copious amounts of ice cold Modelo draft beer and margaritas! (327 total miles)
Until next month, get out and ride every chance you get! I certainly will…riding“feedsmysoul.”

Harley-Davidson has long been synonymous with American motorcycling, and the 2025 Touring lineup reaffirms the brand’s commitment to innovation, comfort, and performance. Known for their ability to transform long-distance travel into a luxurious and thrilling experience, Harley-Davidson’s touring motorcycles for 2025 bring an exciting array of updates, blending cutting-edge technology with timeless design.
A Fusion of Tradition and Modernity
The 2025 Harley-Davidson Touring series builds on the company’s storied heritage while embracing the future. This year’s lineup includes updates to iconic models such as the Road Glide and Street Glide, as well as a refreshed version of the Ultra Limited. These motorcycles maintain the classic V-Twin engine architecture, but some are now powered by the Milwaukee-Eight 114, 117 and 121, engines that deliver smooth performance, increased torque, and improved fuel efficiency.
In terms of design, Harley-Davidson continues to honor its traditional aesthetics with teardrop fuel tanks, batwing fairings, and chrome or black accents. However, the 2025 lineup incorporates sleeker lines, lighter materials, and a more aerodynamic profile, striking a balance between classic appeal and modern engineering.
Advanced Technology for Modern Riders
Harley-Davidson understands that today’s riders demand more than just raw power—they expect connectivity and convenience. The 2025 Touring motorcycles feature the next-generation Boom! Box GTS infotainment system, now equipped with a faster processor, enhanced graphics, and seamless integration with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Riders can access navigation, music, and communication tools via a high-resolution touchscreen that remains functional even while wearing gloves.
