2018 FLHXS Do you want top-end touring technology, infotainment, and an unruly stripped down bagger look? Then this custom 2018 Harley-Davidson Street Glide Special is just the bike for you. This 2018 Street Glide Special is donning the all new custom Velocity Paint set. Velocity is defined as the rate of change of position with respect to time. So there’s no time like now to change your position. To set the pace, this bullet is jacketed in piano black with a whisper of blue midnight sky pearl for added shimmer. Then, nebula silver panels accented with charcoal fade speed lines and tip-to-tip H-D Orange race stripes are added to impart a sense of forward motion. Finally, the paintset is finished off with a muscular silver outline HarleyDavidson signature. There are only 225 of these paint sets available worldwide, and this one is just waiting for you! To add to this already amazing looking custom paint set, a set of stretched saddlebags and a custom wrapped front fender were added, furthering the look of this already custom looking bike. The Motor Company commissions only a handful of custom designs each year. Each hand-painted set has been lovingly created by a small team of artists and specialists, exercising their vast skills to deliver depth and dimension unknown in production paint. Since Harley-Davidson hand-picks their custom painters, they stand behind each Limited Series paint set with an unmatched two-year Harley-Davidson warranty when installed under the Custom Coverage Program.

modern look.

Coupled with the flawless Velocity paint set, the blacked-out engine components really set the look of this bike apart from the rest. Not only is the engine blacked out, but so is everything else; from the handlebars and the Defiance handgrips, to the tank console, down to the front forks and exhaust. This bike has an aggressive

Well my friends 2017 has come and gone and we are now looking at the New Year and hoping 2018 will be a great year for all of us, our families and our country. We here at Full Throttle Magazine hope every one of you had a great Holiday Season and we wish you a prosperous and healthy New Year. Let’s all make a pack to ride safe this year and watch out for those not watching out for us. There are too many drivers not watching for motorcycles so let’s watch closer this and keep all of us safe in the upcoming year. We are starting to talk with many of the groups and business people about events, rides and benefits for the upcoming year. This year promise to full of many great rides and events. We are starting to make plans for our sponsored Bike Nights and will begin to post these things as we get all the details worked out. Our weekly Bike Night on Weds night at Bobby’s Place in Valley Park will be bigger and better this. We are planning more activities and more fun for every Weds night. Full Throttles “Historic Route 66 Bike Night” has grown over the past couple years and now is the area’s largest turnout for a weekly Bike Night. As I said, we are planning more fun and more excitement for this event and look forward to seeing everyone there again this year. We will be posting start dates for the 2018 Bike Night schedule sometime in February. Be sure and mark your calendars and plan to attend the 4th annual STL Motorcycle show at the Dome in the America’s Center on January 13th and 15th. There will be a lot of new Vendors this year and many of the regular vendor’s from the prior years. The show will have over 75 Custom and Vintage bikes on display as well as hundreds of New and Used motorcycles from most every manufactures and many local dealers. Tim Dyson FMX Stunt Team will be performing shows daily and that a show you don’t want to miss. Show hours are Saturday 10am-7pm and Sunday 10am-4pm. Look forward to seeing you all there. As always, ride safe my friend and see you on the road with Full Throttle Magazine. Bob

experience that you would expect from the best audio system that Harley-Davidson has to offer. Not only will you be getting the Boom II Audio system in the fairing, but we’ve also added a set of Boom II Speakers to the saddlebag lids! With the color-matched saddlebag speaker lids, the additional speakers look factory, but sound nowhere near it. The Hidden AM/FM/WB Antenna also helps progress the already clean look of the bike without compromising your audio. You’re already getting the best audio system available from Harley-Davidson, so let’s change up the sound of the bike itself. This Street Glide Special is rockin’ a Stage I engine kit. A Screamin’ Eagle Wedge High-Flow Air Cleaner, a Screamin’ Eagle Pro Street Tuner, and some black S&S MK45 performance slipon mufflers with black machined thruster end caps means two things: power and sound. The sound of the MK45 Performance Slip-on mufflers can only be described as a deep, throaty rumble with a calming tone. You won’t be hearing any popping from this Stage I. On the performance side you can expect about a ten percent performance increase throughout the entire RPM range when compared to a stock engine. Even though this bike is already a head turner, we’ve added something that should help improve visibility in the day or night. That would be Custom Dynamic LED Turn signal inserts. These turn signal inserts from Custom Dynamics coupled with the smoked LED lenses improve visibility and gives you a cleaner, more modern look. If you’ve ever been behind a bike with these LED Inserts you know just how bright they are. The forty-eight red LEDs in the rear offer the visibility you want, with the styling this bike deserves. The front LED Inserts offer a run and turn function that brightens up the front end as well; combined with the 7” Daymaker Projector LED Headlamp it might seem like you have the sun itself mounted to the front of the bike. Even with everything that has been added to this bike, there’s still plenty of room for customization so you can put your own personal touch on the bike when you claim it as your own. Want different bars to fit you perfectly, or just to change the look of the bike even further? Want to throw on a solo seat to truly give this Street Glide Special a stripped-down look? We have you covered here at Docs H-D. Come see us today! Give us a call at 314.965.0166, check out our website at docsh-d. com or swing by our Facebook page!

Evolution of the Mot Why Are Motorcycles on Al

Before we can dive into the understanding of the motorcycle enthusiast, we need to have a greater understanding of how this exhilarating machine came to be.

Now, most everyone have a base understanding of the motorcycle and some of the history. But do you know how far back the history goes? Oh, some of you will say 1901 for Indian Motorcycles and 1903 for Harley Davidson. These two companies did indeed put the motorcycle industry on the map, no question. Let me digress just a bit; traveling back in time to Michelangelo. Some would say that it all began with him, the true inventor of the bicycle. He did not actually construct the bicycle, but merely put brush to paper drawing a body, wheels, pedals, and a chain. That was it. No handle bars or steering column. What this did was cause the minds of inventors to churn. In 1791, There’s Comte de Sirvac inventor of the ‘Hobby Horse”; consisting of two wheels, a body, and a steering bar, no pedals or chain. It was more of a conversation piece with no real functionality. Inventor after inventor came closer and closer to perfecting the “Bicycle”. In 1860, a blacksmith in Paris, Pierre Michaux, own the first company to construct a bicycle with pedals call the Velocipede. The first motorcycle can be traced back as far as 1867 when Pierre’s son Ernest Michaux fitted a small steam engine to one the ‘Velocipedes’. Moving forward in 1868, an American, Sylvester H. Roper of Roxbury Massachusetts, developed a twin cylinder steam velocipede, with a coal fired boiler between the wheels. In 1881, Lucius Copeland of Phoenix, Arizona designed a much smaller steam boiler which could drive the large rear wheel of an American Star high-wheeler at 12 mph. In 1887 the first successful ‘moto-cycle’ was produced. “Did you know that the first commercial design for a self-propelled bicycle was a three-wheeler called the Butler Petrol Cycle?” In 1885, German inventor, Gottlieb Daimler and Wilhelm Maybach worked with Nicolaus Otto, an engineer who in 1876 developed the “four-stroke combustible engine”. Daimler took the idea of Sylvester H. Roper’s Velocipede and added Nicolaus Otto’s engine and hence came to be the first true adaptation of a gas powered “Motorcycle”, better known as “Motor Bicycle” Through the course of time, there were many inventors and companies that saw this self-propelled bicycle as the future. In 1901, the first motorcycle with a 239 cc engine was created. In 1902 the bicycle maker Triumph decided to extend its focus to include motorcycles. A year later they became the largest manufacturer with an annual production of over 500 units. Other firms were Norton and Birmingham Small Arms Company began motorbike production in 1902 and 1910, respectively. Also in 1901, the Indian Motorcycle Manufacturing Company was founded, producing over Page 8

torcycle and Enthusiast lmost Everyone’s Bucket List? 20,000 bikes per year. In 1903, William Harley, Walter Davidson and Arthur Davidson started the American company Harley-Davidson and by 1920 they were largest manufacturer with their motorcycles being sold by dealers in 67 countries. Through the decades more and more motorcycle companies came to be; BMW, Suzuki, Kawasaki, Honda, & Yamaha to name a few. Let’s rush forward to the 21st century. There are choppers, street rods, cruisers, small bikes, large bikes, bikes that are quiet, bikes that are Very Loud, and my personal favorite….”The Trike”. So here begs the real question. Why is this two or three wheeled form of transportation on everyone’s bucket list? People want to own one or at the very least ride one. Several years ago my aunt voiced that she really wanted to ride on the back of a motorcycle. So my husband and I went and picked her up. She got on the back of his bike with him and we took her for a quick 15 minute ride. When we got back to her house, she was grinning from ear to ear. She said that she can check that off her list of things that she has always wanted to do. What is so fascinating with this machine? Is it because it’s un-inhibiting, a sense of freedom, an adrenaline rush? I would say yes and much more. It’s the feeling of exhilaration, the wind racing past you. When you are racing down the highway are 60, 70 or 80 mph and then you come to a stop, how your skin is tingly, the hairs on your body are standing on end. Your senses are heightened; everything from your reflex actions to your sense of sound and even smells. This spring, when the trees and flowers are in full bloom, take a ride and smell how the honeysuckle is so sweet in the air. You can never experience that traveling in a car. Or in the middle of a beautiful summer day when you are riding down a curvy road and you come up on a glorious canopy of trees that shelters you from the hot sun and how the shade gives off a cool breeze. There is nothing to obstruct your views of Gods landscaping. Why would you not want to experience this? There are some that associate motorcycle riders as being Bad Ass. Some are and some aren’t. The one common thread that we all have is the love of the open road. There is a certain camaraderie between bikers. Now, not to say that some bikers want to have it out with other bikers, that’s just the nature of the beast. But, I would like to stay positive in all this. Most bikers will come together for a greater cause, such as local and national charities alike. What I think is the best part about being a motorcycle enthusiast sums it up in two words… ”THE RIDE”. So the next time you decide to take “A RIDE” and you pass your fellow biker, remember to extend your hand add a wave saying, “Yeah, I know what’s on your mind”. Remember to Live Free, Ride Hard and always be safe. www.FullThrottle-Magazine.com

“Midnight Special” H

ow’s it going Full Throttle readers, Zach White here to give you the latest and greatest info from St. Charles Harley-Davidson. Hope you all enjoyed the holiday season and another year come and gone. The new year has approached and the start of seminar season is here. Also to start it off in just a couple weeks will be the STL Motorcycle Show. This is one of many custom builds we will be displaying for you all so make sure to stop by. Now lets get started on some of the different modifications our Master Technician, Mike Bellamy has done to this fat front end 2018 Road King Special. As you can see looking from the side of the front wheel it looks amazing. It is one of my favorite wheels made by Xtreme Machine, the Execute. This has a 13” matching rotor to give you the stopping power but also open up the right side of the wheel to show it off. Now looking from the front of the bike you can really see why I said the fat front end. This has a 18 x 5.5 wheel and wow does it pop. Not only does it look good but it handles even better with the 180mm Pirelli Night Dragon tires on the front and rear. To keep the look of the Road King classic look we went with a fender that made that happen. Big thick and dropped down to really give it that classic look. Since the new Road King Specials already come blacked out we had to keep that look for the front end and 6 piston caliper to really be that perfect match that goes with the 13” rotor. We wanted that low look from top to bottom so we went with the Misfit 8” black handlebars that really give you the control you need and the stance you want. Since this bike is so stealth Page 24

www.FullThrottle-Magazine.com

and mean looking we had to make sure that was played into the exhaust so we installed some Two Brother Racing slip-on. It lets this bike idle at a now mellow sound but when you open the throttle you will be heard. From the factory the Road King Special really looks good with all the blacked out pieces from front to rear and the stretched rear saddlebags to keep that really low appearance. We just couldn’t leave it that simple and allow every black one you pull up to looking the same so this is why we added the St. Charles Harley-Davidson touch to it. We have been thinking of doing a Road King for a while now and everything aligned perfect to make that happen. Make sure to come in and check it out because it just hit the showroom floor and it might not make it down to the STL motorcycle show before it’s sold. Looking forward to seeing you all at the show and seminars this month. come in to the dealership for up close first looks at some of our builds we will have assuming they haven’t sold at the bike show. Thanks again for taking the time to read this and please come into St. Charles Harley-Davidson and ask for me, Zach White or give me a call @ 636-946-6487 and also by email, zach@stcharlesharleydavidson.com to set a consultation with me! I’m here to make all your Harley-Davidson dreams come true!

Bikers Helping Bikers

It’s all in the name! Our organization has been around for 30 years since Tom Hartbauer thought that the time was right for someone to “Help Our Own”. Through the years we have grown from H.O.G. Chapters supporting and helping fund us, to our Incorporation in 1997 and becoming a 501 (C) (3) Not-ForProfit recognized by the Federal Gov’t. in 2003. We are proud that our Officers, Board and all our Representatives are bikers and UNPAID VOLUNTEERS who do this out of the love of motorcycles, those who ride and the lifestyle, no matter what you ride, what you wear or who you are. If you encounter a True Hardship and are a Biker living within 100 miles of the Gateway Arch, we want to assist you financially with a “Hand Up…Not a Hand Out”, when you need it most. Our application process is pretty straightforward, but some requirements are in place. We offer only financial assistance. To date we have disbursed over $300,000.00 to more than 600 bikers, and is some instances their family members. Hardships are not only due to motorcycle related injuries, but illnesses and loss due to floods, fires and other accidents. Our organization is officially named “The Hartbauer/McBride Memorial Foundation, Incorporated”. But through our “Biker Fund” we are: Bikers Helping Bikers You can view our history and almost anything you want to know about us on our Website shown below as well as our Facebook page. “IT’S SHO W

elcome back once again Full Throttle readers and riders! The fat man has come and gone and we are rolling right into a new year! Hello 2018! To be honest its feeling more like early March rather than early January here in the STL and surrounding areas! It’s hard to say what the hell is going on with this weather when St. Louis has received zero snow and my home town of San Antonio, TX and other southern states enjoyed/hated a good amount of the “devils dandruff”. By the looks of it we could be riding well into this season and may not even have to put the ole sled into hibernation. But as we all know this is the perfect time of year to make some upgrades and improvements or even shop for a new toy. So what a better time to attend the Annual “St. Louis Motorcycle & Custom Bike Show” this January 13th and 14th at The Dome downtown! This expo has grown exponentially every year due to the network involvement of surrounding dealers, national brand reps, product ambassadors, our local mom and pop shops and of course you the consumer! Whether it’s a brand new toy you’re looking for, some new gadgets or gizmos for your existing toy, or you are just looking for another toy for the toy box over all you will be able to find it at this show! You can check out anything and everything you may want or need to get your adrenaline and blood pumping! Maybe you are looking for that ATV or UTV work horse that meets your day to day needs. With so many brands on hand it’s easy to get all the info and answers to your questions in one stop under one roof. Two wheels, four wheels, three wheels, off road, on road, sport or cruiser it will be on hand to touch, feel, fall in love with, and buy. The team here at Big St Charles Motorsports, St. Charles H-D and St. Charles Indian have some “BiG” plans for those attending! Not only will we be bringing you the very latest from all our major in house brands like Kawasaki, Yamaha, Star motorcycles, Suzuki, Honda, KTM, Can-Am, Slingshot, Indian, and of course the all new Harley-Davidson Softail line up, we will also have some custom built machines on display for you to check out. And that’s simply just all the new offerings we will have on display, we will also have thirty-plus hand selected gently preloved units on display and ready for new homes! For all our fiercely loyal Goldwing fans will also be getting our first look at the highly anticipated, long awaited, brand new and completely redesigned 2018 Honda Goldwing! Our Page 28

talented team plans to build some incredible machines right before your very eyes as we have done in the past. Not to mention we will also have a fully striped down 2018 Softail Fat Bob with the power plant and tins completely removed so you can check out the all new 2018 mono-shock Harley Softail frame in all its glory. In the past you guys have asked and the event coordinators listened! Not only will there be plenty of motorcycles, ATV’s, UTV’s, and autocycles of all shapes and sizes on display, there will also be for the first time aftermarket product reps in attendance to help with any of your needs for that new or new to you toy! The St Louis Motorcycle & Custom bike show will have brand ambassadors on hand from companies like Cobra Exhaust, Progressive Suspension, Burly Brand products, Vance and Hines, Performance Machine, Kuryakyn, Mustang Seats, Xtreme Machine Wheels, XK Glow lighting systems, Arai helmets, Pirelli tires, and Quadboss the ATV and UTV specialists! There will be plenty of amazing machines to enjoy and drool over so be sure to make it to the “St. Louis Motorcycle and Custom bike show” January 13-14 doors open at 10am Saturday morning. Thanks to Frank Supancic & all who contributed their time & effort in planning and attending the “ 2nd Annual Bryan “ Big Worm “ Hern memorial Ride on Oct. 14th 2017. It was a beautiful day and a great turnout. As I said last year at the first ride, The only way the day could of been better, is if Bryan was with us in flesh. He is no longer in flesh, but his spirit is very much alive.Bryan left so many memories on and off the road. He loved sports and loved to ride and was very good at both. Bryans spirit rides with us always. Bryans friends have now become our friends. This truly is a gift from him. He is in our hearts and there to stay and no one can take that away. Bryan was a protector. If truly there are more Guardians Angels, anyone of us would be proud to have him as ours. We are looking forward to next October for the 3rd annual run. I will pray for another great turnout and a full day of sun. A big thanks to family and friend Denis Niederhoffer for the photos, his talent and time is greatly appreciated. Well, here we are, 2018! Many said it would not happen. But some of you readers may not even know what I’m talking about. Prince even had a song about it; “Party like it’s 1999”. Experts were predicting the crash of all things computers at the stroke of Midnight in the year 2000. But, alas, here we are, 2018 and the world is still spinning; maybe a bit more volatile, non the less, it’s spinning. This year is going to be the best yet. I’m so excited about being part of a great magazine and working with the fun people that put it all together. More important, being the lead writer for their new feature Gaslight Garage. Being this is our first car and I thought should we start up slow and build up to more powerful and exotic cars. THEN I WOKE UP! What was I thinking…..You want Cool….Sexy….Fast! Here it is! And why couldn’t you have the best of it all? I am thrilled to introduce you to Denny Terzich and his remarkable ’55 Chevrolet 210 he calls “X-BOX” with 1,300 horse power at the wheels. Denny is such a great guy and his love affair for cars runs very deep. So what do you do to a Classic that you love? From what I understand this was more of a “Rust-Box” then an X-Box and not the normal “Shoe-Box”, like us Chevy guys call them. To answer that question is easy; you take it apart and redesign EVERYTHING! Now, I shouldn’t say “easy”, since there was nothing easy about this build. It was a well planned out adventure starting with Brian Stupski, of “Problem Child Kustoms” who drew up the concept renderings. When the average person would look at this ’55 I assumed that Denny would hear many people say “I had one just like it back in the day”. Nothing could be farther from the truth, this ’55 has WELL over 150 modifications. But that is also a compliment to the car. Denny likes the look of the original, he just wanted everything to be thousand times better. With me being a builder and fabricator, I can really appreciate the work put into this X-BOX and everywhere you look, you find more to admire. Denny had the guys at “Area 51 Autoworx” start the bodywork and it was finished at Volker’s Auto Body. One of the first things you will notice is the hood, the front edge has been raised to allow a one piece grill and what you may think are just stripes is actually where it was modified to create extractors for air and heat to be released. You’ll also see the Cowl Hood effect and how it is carried through the windshield onto the top of the dash. (If you wonder how many hours that took; start around 250 hours and go up from there.) When

you look at how nice the bezels fit the lights, you’ll realize they are now “One Off” Billet pieces made by CCTEK. Even the parking lights bezels double as cooling ducts for the brakes and the offset radiator. As you are admiring the roof lines you’ll see the A-pillars were cut, 1-7/8 inch to be exact and the B-pillars leaned forward twelve degrees for more of a wedged profile. When you chop a top you always have to be concerned about the glass. Denny was able to turn to Brian Harding of Chicago Glass Guy for cutting the windshield. Anyone that knows the Tri-5 cars knows the trunk is half of the body; not this one. The rear part of the deck lid was welded to the quarter panels and a new opening was created. It didn’t stop there, check out the rear spoiler. This is one of those areas you say: good thing it is Only Metal. That spoiler took two to three tries to make it right and flow the way that it does. Not an easy task. When it was finally time for paint Denny and the Volkers decided on BASF Glasurit. Now comes the fun part, to answer the burning questions, “how did he achieve that 1,500 horse power?” It started with a Chevy Performance 427ci LSX block. Thanks to KMP Performance and Machine, with KTek doing the final assembly. To aid in power, Denny want to be OBNOXIOUS so he chose the ProCharger F2. Without the quiet blow off option. He was told it sounds like a jet fighter coming down the road. More than one person has told him he needs a sticker that says Warning: Will suck in small children and animals. The very impressive engine bay was handled by Josh Hart of Hart Fab. Denny knows the feel of the McLaren, Porsche and Corvettes, so why have anything less. For the interior, he turned to Smith’s Custom Seats. Kevin Smith worked closely with CCTEK for more of the “One Off” pieces to tie the interior and exterior together. Like the trussed dash, door handles, I-beam headrest mounts, pedals, center console switch panel and so much more. With all of the best parts and modifications you can see, what holds it all together is an Art Morrison chassis with a switchable three link or a four linker suspension. So no matter if you want a road course track day or a day at the quarter mile the X-BOX is ready to go FULL THROTTLE. My Special thanks to Denny Terzich for allowing me to cover his car. Thanks also to EJ Talik, Nathan Durst, Justin Lilienthal, crew at Area 51 Autoworks and Volkers Auto body and finally the Captain. www.FullThrottle-Magazine.com
