s rider’s, we all know the risks we take every time we throw our legs over the bike. We’re constantly being vigilant, looking for the next problem that could occur during our ride, whether it’s a shredded tire laying in our path that we must avoid, or avoiding the car that makes a lane change without checking their mirror or blind spot. Unfortunately, there are going to be times that things out of our control can occur. We here at Doc’s Harley-Davidson want to help you gear up with the proper gear just in case it happens. One of the most important pieces of gear that comes to mind, and protects it, is of course a helmet. Harley-Davidson offers a vast variety of helmets to suit your needs for safety and style. 1. The Half Helmet The Half Helmet is the least intrusive helmet. It’s ideal for the rider who prefers not to wear a helmet or feel claustrophobic with more coverage around the face. 2. 5/8 Helmet The 5/8 helmet offers slightly more side and back coverage than a half helmet, but still minimally intrusive. They are available in open face styles or with a face shield. 3. 3/ 4 Helmet The ¾ Helmet offers more coverage for the sides of your head and face. They’re easy to get on and off. They’re available in both open face styles or with a face shield for added protection. 4. Full Face Helmet The Full Face Helmet offers maximum coverage which provides added protection for your head, face and chin. Ideal for riding in cold or inclement weather.

I’m a bit disgruntled with the weather at this point. We just can’t seem to shake past winter. It’s been a slow move trying to get some nice days to kick off all the biking events and bike runs. However, last Weds evening was the second week for “Historic Route 66 Bike Night” and it was a gorgeous evening and we had one of our best attendance nights ever. I’m certain this year is going to be HUGE at Bobby’s Place in Valley Park for the Full Throttle Magazine Bike Nights. We are working hard this year to bring more things to do each week at Bike Night and offer more fun, great food and great drinks. This event has quickly grown to be the area’s biggest and best weekly Bike Night. Also remember that every 3rd Thursday each month One Eyed Willie’s will be bringing back their Bike Night. I always say if you can’t have fun at One Eyed Willie’s then you can’t have fun period. Willie’s always has great food, great drink specials, The Willie’s Beautiful Girls and tons of fun for everyone. Everybody knows about the Big St Charles Bike Nights the first Thursday of each month. Holy crap is this event grown to monumental size. This is by far the largest Bike Night in the Lou. Free food, drink special, Calendar Girl Search, special appearance event and like I said Holy Crap more people and bikes than you can believe. This is one HUGE party. If you haven’t been there you may be the only one who hasn’t been. Those are most popular bike night in town so mark those on your calendar. I know I bring this up every month but Lake of the Ozark Bikefest is September 12th through the 16th this year and I keep banging this out because it’s the largest Motorcycle Rally in the Midwest. I want to make sure you get your reservations early to capture the best rates and rooms. The Bikefest committee has worked damn hard to make this event full of amazing rides, great events, the Passport Bike Giveaway (which is presented by Full Throttle Magazine) and 5 days packed with fun and great people and something you don’t want to miss. Also the Lake is a great place just to take a ride and enjoy the many things to do year round. We suggest you make a weekend of the Lake of the Ozarks often, not just at Bikefest. It also features a triple vent system which will allow you to customize how much airflow you get while riding. You might think of motorcycles seats as just being for comfort while riding, but seats can help you ride your motorcycle more safely and help your bike fit you better. For the shorter rider, it is very important that you can reach the ground flat footed. That why Harley-Davidson makes the Reach Seat! The reach seat that fits Model Year 2014 and later lowers riders by .8 inches and moves them forward about 1.5 inches without locking the rider into a cramped position. We also have the Tallboy Seats for riders with the opposite problem which is designed to move the rider up and back from the stock seating position. With the Tallboy Seat the correct riding position can help a tall rider sit comfortably on the bike and avoid leg cramps and back strain during a long day on the bike. hy ride a motorcycle? That is a question a lot of people who have never rode tend to ask. There are many different reasons people ride, and each biker I’m sure has their own reasons. I am going to tell you a few of the main reasons why you should own a motorcycle and get out and ride. By the time your done reading this article, you will want to get in your car and go get yourself a new two or three wheeled beauty!!!! Let’s start with excitement and thrill. The excitement and thrill you get controlling a powerful machine on two wheels is one of the biggest reasons new riders instantly fall in love with their motorcycle. There is nothing else quite like it. The feeling you get going into a sharp turn or switchback. Or riding side by side with a big group of your friends and fellow riders is just amazing. We all know there is some risks involved, but hey, sometimes that even heightens that enjoyment, excitement, and thrill you get. Another huge reason people ride is because of the relaxation or ZEN effect they feel from taking a nice cruise. When you hit the open roads, it can really help clear your mind and put you in a totally relaxed state. Then you can try and forget about all the worries you may have and just put 100 percent focus on you and your surroundings. This will also help you get in total contact with your surroundings. By being in a calm relaxed state and totally connected to your surroundings, your happy endorphins will kick in putting you in an overall great mood. There is nothing more important than the camaraderie between bikers. It’s as if you are just one big community or family. There is a certain bond that is created with your fellow bikers. You all have something in common; you love to ride. There also will be a certain respect you will have for each other. But that respect will have to be earned by showing respect. Like the “wave”, for example. If you ride, you know about the “wave”. This is just out of respect to say hey. When passing another Page 20

bike, you give a simple hand gesture or wave. Even most people who don’t ride have seen this a few times in their life. Bikers are some of the most giving and caring people. They are very big in giving back to their communities by helping/donating to charities and fellow bikers in need. A lot of people do not know this, but once you are part of the family/community you will realize it quickly. There are thousands of Poker Runs and charity events held each and every year. There are even certain groups of bikers that are dedicated to doing charity work and helping communities. Like B.A.C.A for example, Bikers Against Child Abuse. They are a worldwide biker’s organization, yes worldwide!!! They do everything in their power, on a daily bases, to help empower abused children, giving them the hope and strength to stand up and fight back. They are a truly special group of people, and there are many other groups or clubs like them out there. In spite of the fact that bikers are like a big family, they tend to be more individualistic than the average person. Whether that’s expressed through personal style, or the way they trick out their bikes. There are so many different things you can do to upgrade and make your motorcycle your own. Motorcycle’s are a huge outlet through which you can reveal your own personality. With gas prices so high, another huge plus to a motorcycle is awesome gas mileage. You can double the miles per gallon a car, SUV or truck gets. A lot of the times even more than double. You can really save some money on your daily commute. It will make parking a breeze for you as well. You won’t have to worry about fitting in to tight spaces. Let’s face it, there is also just a “cool” factor when riding a motorcycle. I know you’ve seen some cruising down the road and thought, “wow, awesome!!” Or seen a biker walk into a restaurant in his/her gear with a helmet under their arm and thought to yourself, “they sure look badass.” I could go on and on about why to ride, but I think if you don’t own a bike, you’re going to want to now. Big St. Charles “Epic” Bike Nights How’s it going Full Throttle readers, Zach White here to give you the latest and greatest info from St. Charles Harley-Davidson. Mother nature is still playing games with us and this roller coaster of weather this spring so far. Hopefully with May here it brings us the weather we all need to get our heads back on straight and into the open air. As I have mentioned before, please make sure your tire pressure is up and you are ready for the nice weather we have ahead of us. Also make sure to look twice as the 4 to 18 wheel vehicles have gotten use to not seeing us as much on the road but guess what we are back! This month I want to talk about our Bike Nights here at St. Charles Harley-Davidson, Big St. Charles Motorsports and Indian Motorcycles of St. Charles. If you all didn’t make it out in April all I can say is “WOW”! The weather couldn’t of been any better for all of us to get the cabin fever gone in the wind and meet up with all of our friends on two wheels. We can’t thank you all enough for the thousands of people that made that night a huge success. What really does it for me is when I walk outside the building and I see all of the brothers and sisters talking and enjoying each others company. It really makes me sit back and think, “Man, how did I get so lucky to be a part of each and everyone of you and have the privilege of calling this my career for over a decade.” The entertainment that night was one for the books. The FMX stunt team really stepped it up this year bringing three riders that did just about every trick in the books. The vendor row had a nice selection of different items that any motorcyclist would enjoy. To the amazing FREE food from Shamrocks and the ice cold tasty beverages. The calendar girl contest kicked off the 2019 calendar search with January and February winners. We can’t wait to see you all out the first Thursday of the month at our bike nights all summer long. We will have some of your Page 32

favorite entertainers out once again. To name a few that will be making there presence again this year will be Big Foot jumping over and smashing some cars, the Globe of Death which will make you think you are inside if you look to long and close and of course the very entertaining Midget Wrestling throwing each other around. Keep an eye on our website and also or event page on Facebook for the latest information. If the weather is calling for rain we will reschedule to the following Thursday because we all like a free bike wash but just not one from good ol’ mother nature. We are trying to make our parking lot for our riders and entertainment this year so anyone driving a vehicles we will have a free shuttle from the EPC parking lot just a block away and also another at Shamrocks so you will already have a parking spot for the after party. It’s all in the name! Our organization has been around for 30 years since Tom Hartbauer thought that the time was right for someone to “Help Our Own”. Through the years we have grown from H.O.G. Chapters supporting and helping fund us, to our Incorporation in 1997 and becoming a 501 (C) (3) Not-For-Profit recognized by the Federal Gov’t. in 2003. We are proud that our Officers, Board and all our Representatives are bikers and UNPAID VOLUNTEERS who do this out of the love of motorcycles, those who ride and the lifestyle, no matter what you ride, what you wear or who you are. If you encounter a True Hardship and are a Biker living within 100 miles of the Gateway Arch, we want to assist you financially with a “Hand Up…Not a Hand Out” when you need it most. Our application process is pretty straightforward, but some requirements are in place. We offer only financial assistance. The “X”

When someone thinks of Hidden Treasures, what do you think comes to their mind? Trunks full of gold and jewels or possibly in the midst of a pile of junk, they find a small token. As kids we were even given treasure maps with the “X” marks the spot on them. Which undoubtably brought out the little “Pirates” in us. Whether we are kids or adults, we all want to find that special treasure. For some of us it may be that Rare Camaro, Mustang or Barracuda and there are a lot of them out there, but The “X” is that Hidden Treasure and rare at the same time. What I am referring to is that very rare AMX which was only produced for three years. This rare find was made by American Motors Corporation otherwise known as AMC. It was so short lived, there are so many that still don’t know about them. This particular beauty belongs to Rick and his wife Diane who has owned this one since 1988. What is cool about the AMX is that it is a two-seater; a real weight saving feature. How many other two-seaters do you know about from that time? The only other models that where made were the ‘55-’57 Ford Thunderbird and the Chevrolet Corvette. Since the AMX was a short wheel base MUSCLE CAR it was a major competitor for the Vette and priced substantially lower, but still a little secret to most. Whenever you walk around car cruises and car shows, every once in a while you may come across an AMC and you say to your friends WOW is that a Javelin, but rarely do you hear “no that’s an AMX!!!” You know you have to check it out because they really are cool Muscle Cars. The AMX name speaks for itself, it was conceived from the American Motors “Experimental” code. AMC had been around for years but, it was time for them to go after a newer younger and more performance oriented audience. They also believed in the old thoughts about “racing on Sundays will make the sales go up on Mondays.” They were very serious about the future for this new model and took it out for some serious racing to set some world speed and endurance records. In January 1968 they did just that, they took two specially prepared AMX’s to the Goodyear track in Texas with the World land speed record holder Craig Breedlove at the wheel setting 106 records. Breedlove also took to the Bonneville Salt Flats for the top speed test with

a sanctioned run of 189 mph and an unofficial run of over 200 mph. I’m not sure about your thoughts, but I think that is pretty amazing. Again that was 1968. Rick’s love affair for the AMX goes way back to 1972 when he saw his first one at the Florissant Dodge’s Used Car lot. He said it was love at first sight. Although it took him a while to get this one, he found it in Louisville, Kentucky in 1988 and drove it home to Florissant, Mo. Rick & Diane were able to have a lot of fun with their new treasure but the day came when Rick wanted to make it better than ever. It was time to take it completely apart and so the fun began. But as we all know, with a project like this, it won’t be all fun and games. Rick thanked his wife on a daily bases for putting up with his pissing and moaning when things didn’t go right. Even though these cars were pretty fast, that wasn’t good enough. The AMX 390 cubic inch motor was opened up another .030 with the rebuild plus a mild performance cam was added. To make things more interesting and the Full Throttle a lot more fun he added a rare CrossRam intake manifold with a PAIR of F.A.S.T. throttle body fuel injection throttle bodies. With a 4-speed transmission being fun, the new T-56 6 speed is a LOT MORE fun. With the AMC “Twin Grip” rear end with 3:15-1 and an estimated 375 horsepower at the rear wheels ,I can see 200mph easy. For the right stance and to make the car safe, Rick went with 15X7 and 15X8 American Racing “Sticks” wheels with Cooper GT tires 225-60 front and 265-50 rear. The interior has been improved with black leather and red piping and stitching on the seats, arm rests and the MoMo steering wheel. To keep an eye on everything the New Vintage USA 3 in 1 speedometer/tach combo works great while looking good. The exterior took almost five years to complete. Another one of those “Body Shop” experiences, which took about four years at two different body shops to finally finish. Pete Saffo and Rick did the bodywork while also removing the side marker lights, shaving and modifying the bumpers before sending it to Bo Maxfield where Bo and Rick did the paint work. The colors are Nissan Sierra Silver, Viper Silver and Chrysler Flame Red. Too bad he didn’t know about “Showcar Specialist” sooner. To get the windshield replaced he called on Don Floyd of D&M glass; you can’t find a better guy even though he says all old cars should be crushed. All kidding aside, Don has owned and raced some bad ass cars and still does. For powder coating the name Gateway Powder Coating was being heard a lot; whatever needed coating those are the guys who did it. I asked Rick what is his favorite part of the car, he answered, “looking out over the long hood and scoop, shifting through the 6 gears and hearing the free flow manifolds and the Thrush Turbo mufflers.” If you ever get a chance to look at this AMX, take the time to look really hard because it is one of the cleanest and most detailed examples you will ever see. www.FullThrottle-Magazine.com
