WELCOME As the Full Circle Fund community works collectively towards our North Star of building a better and more equitable Bay Area, we continue to evolve and grow. Before we look back at the evolution of 2018 and growth into 2019, I want to thank all of you for your overwhelming generosity and commitment to this work. 2018 was an incredible year for Full Circle Fund as we launched new programs and refined our existing ones. Our pilot programs brought in new energy and excitement, and the refinement of our existing programs ensured we continue to meet the needs of all of our Members and Bay Area nonprofits whom we serve. Through this work, we now have three clear engagement tracks that allow us to provide opportunities for members and Bay Area nonprofits to meet everyone where they are in their personal or organizational life cycle. As a community, we have doubled down on our commitment to equity in 2018 and moving into 2019. In 2018, we reviewed our internal strategy and established equity as a formal part of this strategy. We are now building an internal committee to help us define equity and create a plan that outlines how we hold ourselves accountable to this incredibly important work, making sure equity lives in how we execute our grantmaking practices, who comprise the leadership of our organization, whom we partner with, and what ways our internal operations may need to shift. We are excited to bring this plan to our community in the coming months to get your insight as well as include you in this journey. As we look to 2019, we all know that we are facing unprecedented challenges on a local, regional, and national level across all of our issue areas. With that, we know that our programs must get stronger and more focused, so we will plan to be laser-focused on the most impactful programming. We also know that our community must grow in size and ability, so we will invest in resources to ensure that growth happens. I am continuously humbled as the Full Circle Fund community shows that we are ready for these inevitable challenges, and you all are the leaders our community needs. You align your values with your actions and provide a beacon of light for the rest of the Bay Area to join you in building a better and more equitable Bay Area. MISSION to be a convener, connector, and catalyst helping changemakers build a better Bay Area. We bring together those from the public, private, and nonprofit sectors to leverage their time, networks, and resources to partner in accelerating social change.

VISION to unlock the resources and generosity of community to transform people, places, and philanthropy by driving more resources to local organizations, amplifying their impact, and building a more connected and equitable Bay Area. We envision a Bay Area where professionals from all walks of life harness their resources to make social responsibility a priority—building a thriving, sustainable, and diverse community that helps shape solutions to today’s most pressing issues.

REFINING OUR

Strategic Framework BUILDING THE MODEL In 2017, we explored the “why” of our organization and positioned ourselves as a network bridging gaps—in knowledge, resources, and empathy—between the private and social sector. This past year, we further refined our Theory of Change, incorporating our vision for how our key stakeholders—local nonprofits, Members, and the Bay Area community— would be impacted by our work. This process has yielded the beginnings of a monitoring, evaluation, and learning strategy, as we become a more intentional and data-driven organization. This intentionality extends to how we are showing up in the community. We have centered equity in our Theory of Change, and in 2019, we’ll be exploring what that looks like from people to practices to partnerships. This journey will also inform our organizational values and our programs. In 2018, we piloted two programs: our Fundamentals series that teaches our Members everything they need to know about nonprofit board service, and our Tech Accelerator Fund, which leverages the expertise and network of tech leaders to source Bay Area tech nonprofits. 4

Our Capacity Building workshops that improve nonprofit effectiveness continue to be popular, including brandUP, a 2-day session we piloted that had 40 volunteer professionals supporting 15 nonprofits in building strategic communications plans. Our first Rising Leaders cohort graduated, many with a greater clarity around their sense of purpose, guiding values, and social impact goals. Rising Leaders are some of our most active Members, and they’re excited to continue building community with us. Our Members wonder how they can have the most impact with their time, talent, and money. Our Grant Partners want to learn how to obtain the resources to both scale and meet community needs. In 2019, we’ll be aiming to answer these two questions by reflecting on the past two years and applying our learnings to strengthen our programs, community, and impact.

ECONOMIC OPPORTUNITY We look for inspirational and effective leaders who want to make a better life for others in need. Our focus is on encouraging entrepreneurship generally within the areas of workforce development, financial services, health, and poverty alleviation. Ultimately, we hope that the ideas and organizations in which we invest can be scaled by larger funders.

Education We find and partner with inspiring education leaders who are answering important questions about how to make education work better for each student. Over the years, we have partnered with educators and administrators, entrepreneurs and union leaders, policymakers and philanthropists, journalists and researchers. This mix of perspectives is part of what makes participating in Full Circle Fund exciting, unique, and enriching for Members.

We aim high and broad – there are many avenues to work towards a solution for our environment. We have partnered with organizations that focus on cleantech and alternative energy, urban sustainable development, green jobs, global warming and climate change, water conservation, and environmental health and social justice. This list is certainly not exhaustive. We strive to identify the most promising and effective organizations that are making a dent in a serious issue.

HEALTH When we formed our Health Circle, it was a direct response to the changing regulatory environment in the healthcare space. Over the years, we have supported not only organizations that focus on systematic changes, but also direct service providers and nonprofits that foster individual health and wellness by means that aren’t even related to healthcare. 9

Open to the public, Full Circle Fund brings together changemakers to both learn and do. With around 50 events per year, it’s easy to find a way to engage. Our beyond-the-dollars approach helps community-based organizations connect directly and effectively with key stakeholders to shape innovative solutions.

ANNUAL GRANT CYCLE Year-long Member-led grantmaking & consulting cycle We select seven organizations each year, award them a $15,000 grant, and define a project or initiative to complete over the course of six months. When an organization joins the Full Circle Fund portfolio, we call them a Grant Partner. The work we do is based on the needs of our Grant Partner and the abilities of our Members. We’ve incubated new ideas, served as a brain trust, advanced organizations to scale, or in some cases, written the first check and given an idea a chance in this competitive space. Common areas of support from our Members include strategic planning, marketing, business development, fundraising, product development, and general organizational development.

CAPACITY BUILDING WORKSHOPS Facilitated strategic consulting opportunities Our capacity building workshops are sessions designed to give busy nonprofits more support as they work to address their unique strategic challenges. These opportunities also enable our network to quickly give back using their professional skills. In 2018, we offered four workshops in partnership with several of our Members who shared their expertise around organizational strategy, branding and marketing, grant writing, and measurement and evaluation.

COMMUNITY CONVENINGS Community gatherings with talks from leaders plus networking Every year, Full Circle Fund convenes experts, thought leaders, and social entrepreneurs to learn about issues, policy trends, opportunities, and organizations making a difference. These community events provide a forum for Full Circle Fund Members and the greater community to increase awareness of issues relevant to our Circle focus areas, exchange ideas, and learn about how to most effectively engage to build a better Bay Area.

LEARNING & TRAINING Diverse workshops designed to build your social impact acumen To support our focus on action-oriented learning, we offer specialized classroom training to ensure our Members are primed for successful collaboration and capacity building, and help our grantees increase their skills and confidence as leaders. We know our diverse membership means training can’t be one-size-fits-all. That’s why our offerings support the needs of those new to the social impact space and seasoned professionals. To offer the best content, we tap into our own internal network and partner with other top-tier institutions to give our Membership the context to accelerate impact. grant partners ECONOMIC OPPORTUNITY CODE TENDERLOIN

Organization United for Respect (OUR) - WorkIt

Mission: Code Tenderloin is a workforce development nonprofit that aims to secure long-term employment for underserved communities in San Francisco by removing barriers to employment, offering intensive job readiness programs, and partnering with organizations to provide combined social, financial, legal, and emotional support.

Mission: OUR is a national organization building an industry voice of people working for the country’s largest retail corporations. Through scaled leadership development and base-building, OUR’s growing network is challenging major corporations and policymakers to provide family-sustaining jobs for all working people. We leverage technology — social media and our digital platform, WorkIt — and bring the retail workforce into a shared community of support and advocacy.

Project: Despite having only 3 staff, Code Tenderloin supports over 300 program participants each year. The Project Team saw untapped potential in the organization’s rich network of stakeholders, including board members, volunteers, program participants, and community members. The team developed a strategic communications and business development strategy to open up more funding opportunities that would enable Code Tenderloin to have a greater impact. Project: WorkIt helps people working in hourly jobs get answers to questions about workplace policies and rights from trusted and trained peer advisors. The Project Team leveraged their expertise around user experience, product evaluation, and business model analysis to scale the platform. Deliverables:

Education HACK THE HOOD

SFUSD RESTORATIVE PRACTICES

Mission: Hack the Hood introduces low-income youth of color to careers in tech by hiring and training them to build websites for real small businesses in their own communities. During 6-week “Bootcamps,” young people gain valuable hands-on experience, build a portfolio, and learn about opportunities in the tech industry, as well as building critical technical, leadership, entrepreneurship, and life skills with mentorship from staff and tech professionals working in the field.

Mission: San Francisco Unified School District adopted a positive discipline approach, called Restorative Practices, in 2009 as a way to reduce the high rates and disproportionality of suspension, especially for Black boys. A restorative approach sees conflict or misbehavior as an opportunity for students to learn about the consequences of their actions, to develop empathy with others, and to experience how to make amends in such a way as to strengthen the community bonds that may have been damaged.

Project: Hack the Hood wanted to bolster their Bootcamps with a mentorship component. The findings from the Project Team’s industry research on effective mentoring programs and interviews with mentors informed the structure of the pilot and the creation of a mentoring handbook. Project: Currently, implementation of restorative practices is uneven. Although anecdotal evidence is positive, many school leaders are reluctant to commit the time and resources to introduce or deepen RP without empirical evidence of its effectiveness. The Project Team assisted SFUSD with program evaluation through surveys, interviews, and analysis, so SFUSD could build a stronger case for more extensive adoption of RP among school staff. grant partners Environment & energy MANDELA PARTNERS

REPLATE

Mission: Mandela Partners (formerly Mandela MarketPlace) works in partnership with local residents, family farmers, and community-based businesses to improve health, create wealth, and build assets through local food enterprises in low-income communities. Through community engagement, education, business cultivation, and financing, Mandela Partners supports and resources the development and growth of locally owned economies and sustainable food systems.

Mission: Replate wants to reduce food waste and hunger. Their platform makes it a breeze for businesses to donate food consistently and liability free. It encourages communication and transparency between food donors, drivers, and recipients. This enables recipient organizations to have a consistent measurable supply of quality food.

Project: Mandela Partners worked with Full Circle Fund in developing a communications strategy for their Healthy Retail program, which increases access points to healthy food by providing produce delivery to local corner stores. After multiple interviews with staff and corner store owners, the Project Team developed a multi-stakeholder communications platform to support an expanded fundraising strategy and to grow the organization’s national recognition as a leader in foodoriented economic development. Project: Replate had a robust Project Team supporting them with revenue, operations, and engagement as they prepared to scale in 2019. Replate is implementing their growth strategy using many of the tools that the Project Team developed. Deliverables: ►► Pricing model and P&L ►► Sales playbook ►► Growth resources


HEALTH OPENHOUSE

YOUNG WOMEN’S FREEDOM CENTER

Mission: Openhouse enables San Francisco Bay Area LGBT seniors to overcome the unique challenges they face as they age by providing housing, direct services and community programs. As a result, they have reduced isolation and empowered LGBT seniors to improve their overall health, well-being and economic security.

Mission: The Young Women’s Freedom Center is a leadership and advocacy organization led by cis and trans women and girls of color who have grown up in poverty, experienced incarceration, worked in the underground street economy, and been criminalized by social services such as foster care, welfare, public education, and the mental health system.

Project: Openhouse plans to open a second building with LGBT-welcoming housing and integrated services. Given that the number of people they will reach will double in the next five years, they needed to address their challenge around collecting data on their community members and their use of services. Through interviews, feedback sessions, and research, the Project Team analyzed their multiple current data collection systems and recommended a strategy around the RFP process.

Project: As YWFC is scaling its operations to more Bay Area counties, they want to amplify their voice among key audiences and expand their influence with policymakers and donors. As an advocacy organization, their impact can be greater with a stronger communications platform and donor base. The Project Team analyzed their website, email marketing, and social media and made recommendations on core messaging and content development.

membership Our Membership model continues to evolve to meet our community’s interests, and we now offer three ways to engage with vv Full Circle Fund: •

Community Membership: Formerly known as Nimble Membership. Limited activation for those with finite time, but who want to engage directly with local changemakers when their schedules allow.

Grant Cycle Membership: In-depth activation for those looking to explore the Bay Area social impact ecosystem while working with local nonprofits to scale diverse solutions.

Tech Accelerator Membership: Curated engagement for tech leaders to pool significant capital and partner with Bay Area nonprofits collaborating to scale tech-enabled solutions.

All Members are invited to various educational forums, social impact training sessions, annual retreats, flagship events, and social gatherings to engage deeper with our entire network. We also provide scholarships to our Rising Leaders and other Members to ensure diversity of age, sector, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
