AC/DC ‘WILL continue with Axl Rose on vocals for NEW album and tour’ In 2014, AC/DC co-founder Malcolm Young had to retire due to health problems and died just two months ago. While in 2015 drummer Phil Rudd pulled out of the Rock or Bust world tour due to legal problems in New Zealand, while Brian Johnson had to step down as singer a year later, as he was in danger of going deaf. Luckily Guns N’ Roses’ Axl Rose stepped in to complete the tour as AC/DC singer, but as soon as it finished bassist Cliff Williams announced he was retiring. With lead guitar Angus Young being the only original member of the band left, fans expected it was all over for AC/DC. However the band’s biographer, Murray Engleheart claims that Axl will continue to tour with AC/DC and release a new album with them. In a statement on Facebook, he wrote: “Speculate all you want but I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: AC/DC will continue with Axl on vocals – new album, touring, the whole nine yards. “What was a massive gamble by Angus turned out to be an e,qually enormous triumph that has set the scene for the future.” Country Singer Daryle Singletary Passes Country singer Daryle Singletary passed away this morning, February 12, at his home in Lebanon, Tennessee. The cause of death is pending. He was 46. Singletary is survived by his wife, Holly, two sons, Jonah and Mercer, two daughters, Nora and Charlotte, parents, Roger and Anita Singletary, brother, Kevin Singletary, sister-in-law, Melinda Singletary, mother and father-in-law, Terry and Sandy Mercer, and brother and sister-in-law, Tony and Kristy Rowland. The family asks for your thoughts and prayers during this time. 3
Funeral arrangements will be announced at a later date. Daryle Bruce Singletary was born on March 10, 1971, in Cairo, Georgia. He earned notoriety for his authentic country style with such hits as "I Let Her Lie," "Too Much Fun," "Amen Kind of Love" and "The Note." On past albums, some of the greatest talents of country music lined up to sing with him including, the late George Jones and Johnny Paycheck, Dwight Yoakam, Merle Haggard, Ricky Skaggs, John Anderson, and Rhonda Vincent. Garth Brooks Named First Inductee into Live Hall of Fame Since Garth Brooks returned to touring after a 16-year absence, he's set records and racked up a slew of honors, including back-to-back CMA Entertainer of the Year titles. Now Brooks can add induction into the newly minted Live Music Hall of Fame. Brooks was announced as the Hall of Fame's inaugural recipient on Thursday at the Pollstar Live! conference in Los Angeles. "It's a total shock and quite an honor," he told the crowd in attendance. "I don't think an entertainer is anything without the people who allow him to do this." Even beyond his record six CMA Entertainer of the Year awards, Brooks is rarified company as a touring artist, and not just in the country world. Last December he and wife Trisha Yearwood wrapped up a blockbuster tour with an unprecedented run of seven sold-out shows at Nashville's Bridgestone Arena. But he remains versatile as well, popping up earlier this week to make a surprise appearance at small Nashville honky-tonk Layla's during the Country Radio Seminar convention and also sharing the stage with Jason Aldean during an Amazon Music-presented showcase. Brooks, who turned 56 on Wednesday, has two U.S. festival appearances on tap in the

coming months. He'll perform a pair of shows, one this month and one in March, at the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo, and headline Stagecoach Music Festival in Indio, California, in April.
Orlando Police Thwart Lana Del Rey Kidnapping Threat Police in Orlando, acting on a "credible threat," arrested a man outside of a Lana Del Rey concert Saturday night on charges that he planned to kidnap the singer. Michael Hunt, a 43-year-old man from Riverview, Florida, was arrested a block from Orlando's Amway Center, where Del Rey was scheduled to perform, on charges of aggravated stalking and attempted kidnapping after Hunt made threatening posts and videos involving Del Rey on social media. At the time of his arrest, Hunt was in possession of tickets to Del Rey's concert and a knife, the Orlando Police Department said in a statement. Hunt is currently being held at the Orange County Jail on no bond. "At no time was [Hunt] able to make contact with" Del Rey, police added. According to the Orlando Sentinel, Hunt frequently used his Facebook page to profess his obsession with Del Rey. On January 30th, Hunt wrote, "I want to see my queen on Friday and from that day forward our decisions will be as one." The next day, in a rambling 17-minute Facebook video that also touched on various conspiracy theories, Hunt said of Del Rey, "I'm going to probably finish out her tour with her, obviously, and dance and talk and figure out what we're going to do." "After receiving a tip we deemed a credible threat, OPD got to [Hunt] before he could get near singer Lana Del Rey last night at her show at Amway Center," Orlando Police said in a tweet Saturday. The Orlando Sentinel added that Hunt has been incarcerated five times, including charges of burglary, grand theft auto, grand theft with a firearm and forgery.
Ozzy Osbourne Talks Final Tour: 'I'm Not Retiring' Half a century after Ozzy Osbourne launched his career with Black Sabbath and four decades since he went out on his own, the Prince of Bloody Darkness will embark on his final world tour. "Will it really have been 40 years that I've been solo?" Osbourne ponders aloud. "Yeah, I guess that's right. It's gone so quickly." Dubbed "No More Tours 2" – a cheeky throwback to his ill-fated retirement bid called "No More Tours" in the early Nineties – Osbourne will kick off the two-year victory lap this spring with dates in Mexico, South America and Europe. The jaunt's first United States leg, which will feature Stone Sour as the opening group, starts in Allentown, Pennsylvania in August and wraps in Las Vegas in October. Tickets for the North American dates are on sale February 17th, with pre-sales beginning Valentine's Day. While the trek has all the markings of a farewell tour, Osbourne says that it's not the end for his career. "I'm not retiring," he tells Rolling Stone on a call from his Los Angeles home. "It's 'No More Tours,' so I'm just not doing world tours anymore. I'm still going to be doing gigs, but I'm not going on tour for six months at a time anymore. I'd like to spend some time at home." The way he sees it, he's simply achieving balance in his life. "I've experienced fantastic things; it's been an incredible journey," he says. "I just need to slow it down a little." And, he adds, after years of missing out on his children's milestones, he wants to be there more for the rest of his family. "I enjoy being a grandfather," the singer, who recently became a granddad again, offers. "I don't want to go through another generation of Osbournes without seeing them grow up." When the tour's done, he'll turn his attention back to possibly making a new album – he has "eight or nine good song ideas," he says – and will do gigs as they come.

When you think of the Godfather of Hard Rock and Shock Rock, there is only one person that comes to mind; and he is the best Shock Rock entertainer of all time. He has been performing for over five decades and has not slowed down. Of course, this legendary singer, songwriter and actor is the one and only Alice Cooper! With his distinctive raspy voice and his show that involves lots of blood, snakes, a guillotine and very sharp swords that Alice told me are very real and he has branded all his band at one time or another when they have gotten too close! I had the privilege to talk to him about his upcoming tour and whats in store for fans for 2018 and how he keeps busy during his off time. Alice tells me he plays golf six days a week and that 37 years ago, he realized that he has an addictive personality, and said "I had to find an addiction that was not going to kill me and golf was that addiction, and it did that. It's amazing how addictive the game is, I call it the crack of sports and I finally got a few of the guys from the band playing. I got my guitar player and my bass player, and they are as addicted as I am. I mean, one lives in Sweden so they don't have a very long season to play and my bass player, he's in a couple of bands so he doesn't get a lot of chance to play. But for rock and rollers, when we tour, it's the perfect sport because, you're on a 90-110 city tour so you're in a

different city every day, you get in in the morning and you have nothing to do all day. So I mean, we tour in the summer time, so every place we go there's golf courses so we get up, go out and play for a few hours, then come back and do the show that night." This is one of the reasons Alice is still going strong at the age of 70. He also feels that not being a smoker has a lot to do with having the lung capacity to be able to do five shows a week without a problem and not having stress. Alice says, "I've been happily married for 42 years, don't have financial stress, and don't have any stress. Everything seems to be absolutely in place, so I'm out touring because I want to tour, not because I have to tour." Alice had a conference the other day that he spoke during and told me, "I said if you think you've written your best song already and you don't think you could write better, then you should quit. And if you think you've done your best show and the next show's not gonna be any better, then yeah, you should quit because you're just treading water. If I asked Paul McCartney right now if he's written his best song, he would say no. He still has that song somewhere in him. I'm the same way, I absolutely do not think I've written my best songs yet, or I don't think I've done my best shows yet." I think I speak for any fan of Alice Cooper and wonder what could

be in store for us if he still has better songs and better shows to come. Wow, do we have more great things to look forward too! With so many albums and so many songs, I asked Alice how do you choose what songs you are going to play and he stated, "If you're in The Who, or if you're in The Stones, or if you're in Alice Cooper, or Aerosmith, there are at least 15 songs out of the 25 songs you're gonna do that you have to do, that the audience demands. I mean if you don't do them, they'll be mad, they'll be angry. So that gives you about 10 more songs that you can play around with. I'll do two songs off the "Paranormal" album, then I've gotta do "Feed My Frankenstein" because that's the Frankenstein bit with the guillotine, so it boils down to one or two songs and it's a challenge because people want to hear this song or that song. So what I try to do is find a couple of songs that they're not expecting you to do. You know, a couple of songs from obscure albums that only the fans would go, "Awww, I never thought they'd do that one!" I like to do "Halo of Flies," which is a nine and a half, 10 min song. And that's another one of those songs that a lot of people would never expect us to do, but it shows the band off. I've got this touring band that's probably the best touring band out there. My drummer just got named best drummer in rock and roll, Glen Sobel. I've got this all-star band that every single night, they just kill it and that makes my job a lot easier, when I know the band is having fun. And on top of it, they're all best friends so there's never any arguing, there's no nit-picking, there's no ego; everybody's just having fun." Alice says that he is honest with his band and has told them when they joined the band that there are three things that he can guarantee them. He said, "I will guarantee you, you're gonna get paid, you're gonna see the world and you're gonna get stitches." I said, "stitches"?? Alice laughs and says, "If you're in the wrong place at the wrong time of the show...I don't use rubber swords or rubber knives, you know? Everyone in the band at some point has gotten a nick where
they had to get 2 or 3 stitches. And it's their badge of honor and they show it off proudly. Nita got one right on the arm, she just got a little too close to the dueling sword, when she first got in the band and she was like, 'Fuck, I got my stitches!' You know its like getting a tattoo," Alice says. "It's fun, I mark my people well!" Alice just put out a new single called, "The Sound of A" and Alice tells me the interesting meaning and story behind the song that he calls, "the strangest single that we've ever put out." He said, "In 1968, I think, we lived in Venice, California. Pink Floyd was living with us, because they ran out of money. And I'm playing the guitar in the other room, and I may have had some foreign something in my system, in 1968 of course! And I never wrote a song where I wrote the music and the lyrics and melody line, and I wrote this little song and I put it on tape. Well, on the last album, "Paranormal," Dennis Dunaway, our original bass player comes in and says, "Hey, I've got these three songs," and he played me two of his songs, and then he played "The Sound of A" and I said, I remember Dennis, when you wrote that." And he

goes,"Yeah, except that you wrote it." I had forgotten about it, totally had no remembrance of this song at all." When Alice records, he records live in the studio. He says, "We don't layer things over. I surround myself with great musicians. I had Larry Mullen Jr on drums from U2, and I had Roger Glover on bass from Deep Purple. I said, let this song drift off, normally we're very, very in control of what happens here. I just wanted this thing to float away, and that's what happened to it. The idea of "The Sound of A" was it was going to be an idea for sort of a sci-fi thing, where the government controlled everybody by piping in the key of A, just one tone, into everybody's house and that kept everybody on an even keel. You know, if they wanted to change your attitude, they would, like go minor on it, you know? So they were controlling you through sound. And it ends up 50 years later on an album, and everyone loves the song. So I mean, isn't that weird,
how a song doesn't really have an age to it?" Having such an impressive long career, I asked Alice what he considers his biggest musical accomplishment to date and he responded, "I really do think the longevity of that fact that there are 27 albums, the fact that we're still selling out every venue we go to and that I can still book 105 shows every year and sell out every one of them, after 50 years in the business.. that's the accomplishment right there. If you're a quality rock band, and you give them quality visuals and you give them a great show every time, they're gonna come back. And to me, that's the trick; just doing quality shows." When you think of the 80's, you think of big hair, skating and pop music. You can't think of the 80s without thinking of singer, songwriter, actress and former teen icon Tiffany. I had the pleasure of talking with her and revisiting my own 80's era of pop music! Tiffany found success in her singles, "I Think We're Alone Now" and "I Saw Him Standing There"; and has done numerous movies, reality TV shows such as Celebrity Cook Off, Celebrity Wife Swap and most recently,"I'm a Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here! Australia." We talked about the difficulties about being in the jungle and not having the comforts of home. Tiffany said, "It was awesome, but really hard to be in total lock-down, but I definitely learned a lot about myself." Tiffany lasted 19 days in the jungle which she said, "It was long enough for me, but you're playing for charity so I wish I would of been able to last a little longer. But, I'm committed to my charity over there for raising money for cancer patients and people who are going through the process, and any kind of in-between stuff that they might need, which there's always a lot of in-between stuff. I've been a caregiver to unfortunately a lot of my friends who passed away from cancer way too early in life and my parents. I know first-hand what it does and you're so stressed. There's so much on your plate, that any amount of help that you

can get from many sources is so much needed. Even though I got voted out fairly early, we're still raising money for them and that's all that really matters." Having been on so many different shows, I asked Tiffany how does she choose which shows to be on and she responded, "If I think it's gonna be fun, if I think the cast is gonna be fun and if I think I'm going to learn something from it, because reality really is not just a paycheck or too kind to your image. It's this great opportunity of course, but I think it needs to be something that you would do, that you learn something new or grow. It's kinda of my little work camp or mediation camp. It's just different. I don't get time to do that really personally, so I do it out in front of a camera. But if you take some of this stuff really serious, it's got the best coaches and the best people and there is usually some kind of depth to a show. And if you can just like walk away and learn something, that's why I say yes to that. I mean Fit Club, I lost 30 pounds and lost the fear of flying. And it really did solidify that for me. Having all those days that I just looked up at the sky in the jungle with no TV. You're totally fatigued and we're detoxing and we really are stripped down because your senses are making sense more. There's a lot of clarity that goes on."

For Tiffany, this worked out great for her because she said, "I could really just think about the album and the promoting that I wanna do. And where I wanna go and all the upcoming shows; and where to take the next level for 2018. I already had a list of ideas and stuff, but just being able to take that time and really know in your heart of hearts, this is it. This is what I want to do and this is how I wanna refine that. It's really great to have that moment, I don't usually get those." Tiffany's new single will be released March 31st and it's called "Worlds Apart." Tiffany tells me that "You're gonna find a connection back to 'The Color of Silence' album. All my albums have been kind of strategic a little bit in telling my story as a vocalist, my passion as a vocalist, my musician's journey as I'm growing up, because at 46 I'm still growing up as a musician, as a legit person. So it's taken me a lot of time to kind of overcome the whole Tiffany image which I love and I'm grateful to have, don't get me wrong. But maybe in the musician community or maybe how people really thought of me, and it's taken me a long time to kind of persevere. And other little things like reality TV and different little avenues that I thought I could show my personality and people could get to know me, and get to know my commitment that I am a valid songwriter and producer and a mom." Along with all the projects Tiffany is involved in, she also runs her own management company with partners. Tiffany says she is excited about her upcoming shows because she says, "You really get to have an evening with me. Every show, we have a set list and my band, I make them work really hard but the whole show is about having that intimate connection. It's just a great experience; one of a kind. With the help of my musical director and my fans who are amazing, it all makes sense. We are rocking it a little
bit more 80's style. And I'm bringing a powerhouse of music. My background friend is another redhead and we just play off each other and her voice is outstanding. I'm always proud to share the stage with her and rock it; and have a good time, so we're gonna kind of invade and take over for a night! You want to keep it fun and retro, but it's ok to do something that's a bit more of a grown-up feel. But I don't think we're missing anything!" Tiffany is looking forward to bringing her new music around the world and reconnecting to her fans. She said, "I am thrilled that I can fly and be able to do it again. I am very proud that everybody stayed very patient with me and my fans have continued to encourage me!" Don't miss Tiffany as she will be performing at the Clermont Performing Arts Center in Clermont on Friday, March 16 and The Straz Center in Tampa on Sunday, March 18th. Florida has been known to have a lot of great bands come out of the state and one of those is country music band "Sawyer Brown." Founded in Apopka, FL, Sawyer Brown is making their return to the sunshine state with a performance at the Florida Strawberry Festival on March 10th. The band consists of Mark Miller (lead vocals), Gregg (Hobie) Hubbard (keyboards), Shayne Hill (lead guitarist), Jim Scholten (bass player) and Joe Smyth (drummer). I had the pleasure of interviewing Gregg (Hobie) Hubbard and talked about the longevity of the band and where they are heading to next. Founded in the early 1980's, this band was discovered by the TV show Star Search in 1983 and ended up winning. Now 35 years later, the band is still together (only 2 member changes) and over twenty studio albums later. The band still enjoys touring and playing together for their fans. I talked with Hobie about how difficult is it to get their music out there now days and he said, "It's such a different world in the way that the entire business was first set up when we first started. In terms of getting it on the radio, that's a whole other world. But that is not what our focus is on. When we find a group of songs we feel strong about, we get in there and play it, and then put it out there. More and more in the music business is independently made music, I think is really the wave of the future. Look at how much great stuff is out there now that comes to us that way. One of the great advantages and benefits of the internet 11

is that you can find the music, you can find people that way, which is a wonderful thing. You can in one day through social media reach more people than you could have in forever, back in the early days. Because you had to rely on getting an interview with a newspaper or magazine, or whatever and hoping that people were gonna see that particular article. Where now you can self promote all day long and it is free!" Sawyer Brown, as I mentioned earlier is playing the Florida Strawberry Festival, which is special for Hobie and Mark since Florida is their home state and where they grew up. He said, "We will have a lot of folks there that we know, but the show is always about having a good time. That you get out there and have a blast, we want there to be a reason why you come see us live versus just listening to a record. I think to know us, you really do need to come see us, and hopefully you don't have to sit down the whole time either. We've performed there before, we know you can cut it loose at the Strawberry Fest. So, we're looking forward to coming back." Hobie also tells me that the stage show has always been a really energetic thing from the first day they ever started playing. He said, "That's just kind of what happens when we get together and play. So, it continues to make the shows fun and I think that's one of those things that drawns the people to come see us live for that hour and a half, forget about whatever else maybe going on and just enjoy yourself."

With having 23 studio albums, the songs that they chose to play are somewhat endless so I asked Hobie how are they able to choose what songs to perform. He tells me, "We we're fortunate that there's a bunch of songs that we literally couldn't get out of there without playing. People definitely want to hear those songs. I go to live music all the time, and when I go see an act, that is what I want to hear, the songs that got them where they are today. I've never been one who buys into when somebody on stage goes, 'Well, I don't want to play this anymore because you know, I've played it for years, or whatever.' It's like, hey man, the reason we're here is because we love those songs so, were definitely believers. We know why you're there. So those are the songs that we're grateful that you still want to hear, so we'll play those all day long! The crowd is who that time belongs to. That's who this is about. It's making sure that they've had a good time at the end of all of this and it's not something we take lightly. It's whoever is been willing to buy a record or listen to something or care about the songs and come see us live. That's a huge thing in my book. People have other things that they can do and I also know that for me as a music listener myself, I know when I've got songs that mean a whole lot to me. And I know what that's like to get to go see people play those songs live. It's hard for me to translate that on the other side of things people bring with them to us, but it's humbling and keeps us working hard." And as far as picking songs for an album, Hobie tells me, "There is no science to it, but from the beginning we have had a knack for listening to songs and whether it's the one that we've written, or one that friends have written that we've found and just being able to know this is gonna work for us. And once you get several songs, it's like will these work well together as a unit once you put it out there on a record? Because I'm still something of a dinosaur when it comes to music, that I do tend to buy full albums. Because I can't count the number of times the songs I ended up loving the most weren't the reason that I bought the album.
There is something about buying an entire record and listening through. Because I think for most people, there's a lot of thought that's been put into all of their songs. So you know, you may discover something you didn't even know was there." Some of Hobie's favorite songs to perform live are, "Some Girls Do" and "The Dirt Road." He said, "Mark and I wrote that, we both could tell you we hear our family's in it and it's incredibly gratifying over the years for other people that go, 'Oh man, I hear my dad or grandfather, or my family in that song,' which is awesome. There's all sorts of little moments when you can watch people respond to a song, that never stops being cool." Hobie tells me he thinks the band's biggest accomplishment is, "That we are still here, and still being together, and still loving what we do. We all still get along and we laugh a lot. I dare you to find a band that laughs more. It's truly like traveling with a bus full of your brothers." Making music is their biggest goal and he says, "We're working on some new stuff. It's like you want this stuff to be as strong as anything we've ever done. And it gets out there and finds a home and that people can still connect with it. I had the chance to speak with Mairéad Carlin about the new tour starting in Florida, their latest live album, and the group’s success. “We absolutely love Florida - the weather, the people, the way of life.. so it’s always a treat 17

beginning our tour here. The humidity in Florida is actually a dream for singers - we bask in that while we are here, believe me!,” She states. Some people consider Celtic Woman as the Riverdance for the voice. So we asked Mairéad how she would describe the sound of Celtic Woman. She replied, “Riverdance was a phenomenon, and so is Celtic Woman. Both grew out of taking chances and believing that anything is possible if you really want it to. Our sound would be described as world music with elements of Classical, Traditional, Folk, Pop and Musical Theatre. It’s all these elements together that make that unique sound of Celtic Woman. We are all about the harmonies!” Their upcoming tour, Homecoming World Tour, is in support of their first-ever full live album, which was just released in January. Mairéad states, “It’s something we’ve never done before. We are always trying new things and want to push boundaries; that’s what music is all about. If we stayed in the same place then music would never progress; it’s what keep it exciting. We wanted to record our live show in Ireland as we rarely get a chance to come home and perform for our families and we wanted to capture the sheer love of that evening. It was a very special night.” It seems that each Celtic Woman album typically has a unique and different sound between each of their albums. I asked Mairéad

what influences their sound on each of their albums. She replies, “I think because individually we all come from such different musical backgrounds. I’m from a classical/folk background, Susan from Musical Theatre, Eabha from Irish Traditional and Tara from a Classical and Irish background. With each album we focus on a different sound that highlights the beauty of each and every one of us, because we are different. That’s something we in Celtic Woman really focus on; showing people that it’s good to be unique, it’s what makes you, you.” Celtic Woman have received a tremendous amount of accolades throughout their career, including being named Billboard World Album Artist of the Year six times, and they were nominated for a Grammy Award in 2017. I asked Mairéad about all their accolades and success. Mairéad states, “Yes! You can never get used to that. It’s so important to remember to not take anything for granted. These accolades are overwhelming because it’s a stamp of approval from our fans who are the most important part of Celtic Woman. We wouldn’t be here without them. The Grammy was incredible! We never thought in a million years that we would be nominated for a Grammy, but it was an extra little nod from our fellow musicians at the academy saying ‘we get you guys, we like what you are doing’ That was pretty amazing.” We asked Mairéad about which song is her favorite song to perform live and she responded, “My favorite song of all is 'Danny Boy’, that songs cuts deep, Never fails to move me. The song was first discovered in a small town very close to where I grew up and so I always feel a very spiritual connection to it and makes me feel close to home.” Having performed many times in America, we were curious to know what is different about performing in America vs. performing overseas. “America was the first breakthrough market for Celtic Woman and a lot of the fans that come to see us have been there from the very
beginning. The excitement that we feel coming from the audiences here are like nowhere else in the world for us, says Mairéad.” She continues, “This is my fifth year touring with Celtic Woman and it still feels like my first. I love every minute of it. Some favorite places around the world include Australia, the sunshine, the outdoor healthy lifestyle there. I love Los Angeles and just generally travelling to all the different places we get to go in the US. My favorite places to perform are Red Rocks in Colorado and Radio City in New York.” I wanted to know what she considered as some of Celtic Woman’s biggest accomplishments. She states, “There have been a few, such as, performing in Radio City Music Hall in New York, Red Rocks in Colorado and getting nominated for our Grammy. But personally my greatest accomplishment was just getting into Celtic Woman in the first place. I count my blessings every single day that i’m here.” Celtic Woman is launching their 90 city North American tour right here in Florida, beginning in Lakeland at RP Funding Center on March 1st. Then they stop at the Mahaffey Theater in St. Petersburg on March 2nd and the Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall in Sarasota on March 4th. Imagine Dragons Evolve Interscope Records gggdf by Alex Flood
If success is determined by numbers, then Imagine Dragons are bathing in riches. ‘Night Visions’, their 2012 debut album, has racked up over 7 million worldwide sales to date, while mammoth single ‘Radioactive’ has shifted over 10 million. But despite these stats, they’re still tough to pick out in a crowd. It’s definitely not for a lack of universally minded hits. ‘Evolve’, the band’s third fulllength record in five years, is an ’80s-flecked, power-rock pumping station fit to burst with huge choruses. Lead single ‘Believer’ is a chart-botherer in waiting, while standout track ‘Mouth Of The River’ channels The Killers. But the four-piece’s bravado is often overdone and it all tends to blur into one. It has the effect of a band throwing everything at a wall and seeing what sticks. Occasionally they embrace a darker, more introspective side (doomy opener ‘I Don’t Know Why’; the vibey trip-hop of ‘Dancing In The Dark’), but they’re mostly unwilling to change the format. This latest effort might represent a small progression, but it’s far from an evolution. Vince Staples Big Fish Theory Def Jam Records ggggd by Joe Madden
While it’s a touch reductive to lump them both together, parallels between the careers of Vince Staples and fellow Californian Kendrick Lamar are uncanny and numerous.
Both have found success despite swimming against the musical flow, performing dense, politically charged lyrics in an era more enamoured with the simplistic sing-song decadence of Migos, Rae Sremmurd and Lil Yachty. Both have cultivated on-record personas that are part bolshy street kid, part world-weary philosopher. Both are astonishingly technically gifted, to the degree that they’re actively evolving the art of MCing. And both have an affinity for rapping over oddball, square-peg beats that sound like nothing else out there. Staples has long operated in Lamar’s shadow. He more than does alright for himself – critical acclaim, decent sales, Gorillaz guest spots – but it’s King Kendrick who’s bagged the Obama endorsement, the album-of-the-year accolades and the reverent fanbase. On Staples’ second album, however, he comes close to drawing level with his West Coast rival. Because ‘Big Fish Theory’ is one of the most ambitious, dazzling hiphop albums of 2017 so far – neck-and-neck with Kendrick’s ‘DAMN.’ Right from fiery opener ‘Crabs In A Bucket’, Staples’ propulsive, hypnotic flow has never sounded stronger. His lyrics, meanwhile, are emotionally calibrated for 2017: antsy, alienated and occasionally overcome with nihilistic despair at the state of the world. And his bleak lyrical brilliance is perfectly matched by ‘Big Fish Theory’’s experimental production. He’s always had a taste for harsh electronic funk, and he embraces that creative urge more eagerly than ever. There’s slo-mo techno, dystopian G-funk, field recordings, growling industrialism; abstract, icy grooves more indebted to Berlin than Atlanta. “We making future music,” announced Staples in the run-up to ‘Big Fish Theory’’s release. “This is my Afro-futurism.”

Debut albums will often claim to be fullyformed statements of intent, or the sound of growing pains and self-discovery. SZA’s ‘Ctrl’ is neither of these. That might be because she’s been introduced a couple of times before – on misty-eyed self-released tapes ‘See.SZA.Run’ (2012) and ’S’ (2013), and then again on album-length EP ‘Z’, which announced her as Top Dawg Entertainment’s first female signing, sharing the spotlight with Isaiah Rashad and one Kendrick Lamar. Oh, and she also starred with Rihanna on last year’s ‘Consideration.’ ‘Ctrl’ skips the friendly hello and dives straight into SZA’s world. Across 45 minutes, she breathlessly leaps between genres, and laments on tired and broken relationships in a stream-of-consciousness style that fans of Frank Ocean’s ‘Blonde’ will adore. For anyone completely new to the 26-yearold (whose moniker stands for “Self-savior, Zig-zag-zig, Allah”), it won’t take long to feel familiar. Opener ‘Supermodel’ is a real-life break-up letter translated into song. “Let me tell you a secret,” she begins, “I been secretly banging your homeboy. Why you in Vegas all up on Valentine’s Day? Why am I so easy to forget like that?” None of this is fiction. In a 2014 interview with The Breakfast Club, SZA revealed she got a call from one of her boyfriend’s friends, who let slip he’d had an orgy in Vegas. She instantly got her revenge, and then she wrote about it. SZA isn’t afraid to include all the gory details. She’s similarly at ease with exploring her own strengths and perceived
shortcomings. ‘Normal Girl’ is all bedroom bravado, but she admits she wants to be “the type of girl you take over to mama.” And ‘Broken Clocks’ is a time-stopping story of her time working in a strip club, and the sudden epiphany she had when realising she wanted to make music. Best of all is how loosely these stark portrayals thread together. Standout ’Prom’ is an out-and-out pop triumph, built from The Police-like muted guitars and teen angst. It’s surrounded by the sluggish R&B stylings of ‘Drew Barrymore’ and ‘The Weekend’’s glossy introspection. But somehow nothing sounds out of place. ‘Ctrl’’s strength is how it doesn’t strive to be one thing over the other. It effortlessly winds between narratives and genres like it’s child’s play. This isn’t a star in the making, it’s a fully-fledged talent who’s practically showing off. Halsey Hopeless Fountain Kingdom Astralwerks Records ggggz by Rhian Daly
Halsey’s 2015 debut ‘Badlands’ made her a cult popstar. ‘Closer’ made her a household name. ‘Closer’ has a trace of blandness Halsey stampedes past when working on her own. ‘Hopeless Fountain Kingdom’ gets by on a universal quality, but there’s a personal touch you don’t find on everyday pop full-lengths. It’s a break-up album, placed in the context of a Romeo And Juliet-inspired world. The record even begins with the prologue to the Shakespearean tragedy, while the video for ‘Now Or Never’ is like her own take on Baz Luhrmann’s iconic 1996 film. The only time a guest threatens to overshadow her is on ‘Eyes Closed,’ co-written by The Weeknd. But it’s far from the best song on the record, proving Halsey’s fast moving from cult hero to global superstar.
