Molly’s Guide to:

Daddy Day Care My boys are three years old now but nothing prepared me for the shock I received after we brought them home for the first time. I would love to tell everyone how amazing it was, bundles of love in my arms, smiles and giggles, the happiest days of my life etc, etc... But after the initial delight of having two healthy babies, reality soon dawns. Sleepless night after sleepless night follow, and what should've been a wonderful time leaves you looking and feeling and looking like an extra from Night of the Living Dead. I would say there's only one thing worse than being tired, and that's being repeatedly told that: "You must be tired…".

‘It gets easier, much easier’

Mark Charlton with sons Joseph (left) & George (right)

Lincoln-born journalist Mark Charlton's life changed dramatically when his twins were born. Here he shares some of his experiences. Having a set of new-born twins is a bit like being a Lincoln City fan - it's hard work, it tests your patience to the limit - but every now and again something happens to make it all worthwhile.

04

WEBSITE: www.mollysguide.co.uk

Family visits: "You must be tired…" Strangers in supermarkets: "You must be tired…", Tramps sleeping on benches: "You must be tired…" In fact the only people who don't say: "You must be tired…" are those really annoying people who always claim to be more tired than you even though they are clearly not, you know the ones, those without kids who sleep all weekend. To be honest I never had the energy to argue about it. Now I don't want to put anyone who is expecting twins off what is coming, but I do want to deliver with brutal honesty that the start is really hard work - especially if you've never had a baby before and don't know what you are doing. Like a disillusioned conjuror prepared to break the golden rule of the Magicians' Circle, I also want to reveal the secret everyone with new-born twins should know, but no one tells you - that the struggle doesn't last forever.

Daddy Day Care

Mark Charlton with sons Joseph (left) & George (right) In fact, within four months, life will seem like a walk in the park compared to the painful slow crawl though quicksand at the start. Get the routine right (feed, bath, bed… like a military drill) and before you know it they'll be sleeping like …er… babies. After a year you'll celebrate what you have achieved and finally realise what you have survived is incredible. Having twins is great fun and I hope to share some of my stories in future editions. At the start, life with twins was a bit like being a Lincoln City fan, the only difference is now, with every week that passes, things just get better and better. Starting School “When children start their formal education at five they will be at different stages developmentally, with girls usually ahead of boys, but don’t worry. Given time, all children should catch up and reach a similar level of literacy and numeracy. “It is normal for children to be tired when they come home from school, particularly at the start, so they will welcome having a healthy snack and a glass of milk when they get home.

‘Stepping Stones Pre-School Nettleham pupils with Louis the hand puppet’

Starting school is a milestone in a child’s life and can be tough for both the child and the parents or carers. It can be a scary experience for the child moving from pre-school or day nursery but with plenty of preparation now before the big day in September, it’ll be much easier. Molly’s Guide talked to three professionals working in childcare - the Pre-School Learning Alliance, a Pre-School provider and a mum and childminder – to ask for their advice. Susan Hagan, Pre-School Learning Alliance, Sub Committee Manager for Lincolnshire said: “Children learn from birth, not when they start school. Parents must not fret about whether their child should be reading and writing or able to sit still behind a desk.

08

WEBSITE: www.mollysguide.co.uk

“Children need to know that their parents will listen to them at home when they want to tell them about what their day was like at school and that their achievements will be celebrated. “With the move to formal schooling, it is important that children still have the space and time at home to enjoy playing with favourite toys and role-play games with friends as a means of making sense of the world around them. Suzanne Hayden, Early Years Professional for the Foundation Stage at Stepping Stones PreSchool in Nettleham says the transition to school is now much moreseamless. “We have a much more rounded approach which makes it much easier for children to move from us on to school. We do lots of preparation to prepare both the child and their parents particularly in terms five and six,” says Suzanne. “We build links with their school and invite the schools to come in. The more joined up approach means it should just be a case of changing venues.

Molly’s Guide to: “This means children aren’t so anxious because they’re not going into a brand new environment. They already know where they’re going and what to expect.” A learning journey folder and a bridge folder between home and school help lay the foundations for children moving from Stepping Stones to start school. And the appearance of a lovable hand puppet, Louis, helps further prepare the children for the next step on their learning journey. Stepping Stones Pre-School has a smaller version of Louis while the schools children are moving up to have a bigger version, mirroring the child’s growth. Louise Harrison, owner of LoobyLoo’s childminders in Fiskerton, and mum of three, is also full of praise for the Early Years Foundation framework. Children she looks after follow a similar learning journey to preschool and nursery children. “We do all kinds of activities from early handwriting skills, counting number recognition, phonics and story time,”said Louise. Children learn through play with games like the shopping basket game where food has different numbers as well as learning valuable writing skills, enabling them to write their own names. “It’s about giving children lots of praise and encouragement and helping them on the learning journey.” If parents choose not to send their child to a nursery, pre-school or child-minder, parents can still tap into tap into toddler groups so ensure their child interacts with other children. “Sharing and social skills are important,” says Louise, who also runs an NCT coffee group for mums. Starting School

TOP TIPS • Good social skills are the key to making and keeping friends at school. • Give children lots of opportunities to mix with other children . • Encourage your child to share and take turns. • Give them firm boundaries for acceptable behaviour. • Encourage them to tidy away toys at the end of an activity. • Get them used to spending short periods of time without you. • Talk to them about going to school and do a dummy run – walk or drive past the school as often as possible. • Find out the name of your child’s class teacher so your child recognises it.

Mummy I’m Bored For example, you may have received pots of ‘play putty’ in party bags or as gifts, which children find fascinating and gives them the chance to leave it in splodges all around your house! In fact, it is very easy to make and the ingredients are inexpensive; this is a real hit with school age children, although we found that the younger ones loved playing with it once made.

Sarah Steel, managing director of The Old Station Nursery, gives tips on how to beat boredom…

Ingredients • 2 Tablespoons of Glycerine • 1 Tablespoon of Borax Powder (available

When the long summer holidays start both child and parent breathe a sigh of relief. For children it means the start of a long break from routine, no lessons, no uniform and hours of fun. For parents, it is a welcome reprieve from chasing everyone out of the house, washing uniforms, making packed lunches and nagging about homework. However, several weeks down the line, how often do you hear a fellow parent say, ‘how long is it until the beginning of September?!’. In these days of belt tightening and increasingly wet English summers, it can be really hard to find inspiration for low cost and fun activities to do with your children. This led me to collect together a selection of fun things to do with children aged from babies to 11 year olds, either to give you an idea on a wet Wednesday when you are at home with a demanding 2 year old, or to help plan a day in the holidays when you might have 2 or 3 children of different ages to entertain without spending money.

from Boots or the Green Shop Online) • 1 pint of boiling water • 2 yoghurt pots of PVA Glue • Food Colouring

How to Make It Mix together all the water and PVA glue in a bowl. (Plastic is better). Add the food colouring to the glue / water mixture. In a separate container mix together the Borax powder and Glycerine. Then add this mixture to the glue/water mixture and stir continuously. (The mixture will become thick and lumpy at first and then smooth out). Leave to cool and set over-night and store in an airtight container. This putty will keep for weeks if kept in an airtight container. Please note that if mixture/putty gets on clothes you will need to keep the area damp until it can be washed. Do not allow to dry, as it turns hard and becomes difficult to get out. Molly’s Guide Helping children to see more clearly Artist Leonardo Da Vinci, legendary mathematician Albert Einstein and business tycoon, Richard Branson, all have one thing in common – dyslexia. It affects around 10 per cent of the population and can affect children in many different ways. However the basic problem is the same a difficulty learning to read, spell and write. Finding out whether your child is dyslexic and providing help isn’t easy but one Lincoln practice, Paul Todd Opticians, has come up with an answer – the Colorimeter machine. Developed by Cerium Visual Technologies, the machine is a logical and sequential means of exploring colour space to find the optimal precision tint for the relief of the perceptual distortion found in dyslexia.

The prescribed colour can then be reproduced as a tinted lens, allowing the sufferer to see more clearly and make progress with their education. Craig Leaver, owner of Paul Todd Opticians, said: “Those who wear these tinted glasses say how clear and still the world is with them on. It’s all about how the light strikes the back of the eye. “Often a child’s confidence is at a low ebb because of what they have been through. It’s great to see the change and watch them blossom into almost different people.”

Do you think your child has dyslexia? Call Paul Todd Opticians at 2 Bunkers Hill, Lincoln on 01522 522088 to book a Colorimeter test.

Food Glorious Food Kids said: “Your child’s mind needs nurturing and nourishment like any other part of his or her body. “Just as a good diet helps maintain a healthy heart, lungs, digestion, so it can influence the efficiency of the brain’s chemical processes, improving memory, concentration and mental energy.”

Family run Kidz Kitchen, based at St Marks Yard in Lincoln, supply meals to Nurseries and Schools in and around the Lincoln area. Pictured are owners, from left, Dad, Bob Robertson, Bob's wife Lynn Robertson and Bob's daughter Jo Bramwell.

Getting children to eat healthy food can be a nightmare but here we give a few tips for success on a plate with yummy food. Food, glorious food – figures produced in a Lincolnshire health report show that more than nine per cent of children starting school in reception year in the county were very overweight. And according to the Lincolnshire Joint Strategic Needs Assessment Overview Report, a further 14.4 per cent were overweight compared with 13.2 per cent nationally. Being overweight doesn’t just pose health risks – not eating a healthy diet can also affect a child’s performance at school. As Nicola Graimes, author of Brain Foods for

14

WEBSITE: www.mollysguide.co.uk

Being overweight can also lead to worrying trends such as bullying at school not to mention cause problems in later life as one consultant in public health explained. “We know that children who develop obesity early in life will be at greater risk of heart disease, diabetes and some cancers if their weight does not return to normal levels, not to mention the psychological distress they also suffer.” To try and eradicate this, various initiatives have been introduced including the `Fit Kids’ programmes and encouraging more children to walk and cycle to school in Lincolnshire. Reception pupils in some Lincolnshire schools were also offered free school dinners in a one month pilot project to encourage children from an early age to eat the right things. For, as one public health consultant pointed out, some children’s packed lunches are more like treat boxes – with even a Smarties’ sandwich not out of bounds. “We want more people to be eating school dinners simply because some children’s packed lunches are like treat boxes.” And like a car’s engine needing fuel, it’s what we put into a child’s body that helps it function better and more effectively. Jo Bramwell, director of Kidz Kitchens in Lincoln, provider of school meals to 10 primary schools in the area, is well aware of how important a healthy diet is for children.

Eating healthy food when they’re young puts them in good stead for the future,” said Jo. “Rather than eating cakes and biscuits you’re better off with something like a flapjack or chopped up fruit.” And a breakfast of porridge and honey is now a firm favourite for Thomas - thanks - to the influence of other family members. For as Jo says, adults can help children on the road to a healthy diet by setting them a good example. Jo also gives cookery classes at her son’s primary school, passing on her healthy eating tips to children. “It’s great to see them chopping up peppers and making their own

Visit East Lincolnshire take a break whilst the children burn off energy. There are also child-friendly seating areas for reading, puzzles and a large chalk board for drawing. And, in good weather, the whole family can enjoy a cart ride around the farm. Tours of a working brewery can be undertaken as part of the Bateman’s Brewery Experience in Wainfleet. There are attractions for the whole family in the beer garden over-looking the river where traditional pub games can be played plus there is a well stocked bar for Mums and Dads. The Brewery is a member of Tastes of Lincolnshire and serves locally sourced snacks. Seals, penguins, tropical butterflies and birds can all be found at Natureland Seal Sanctuary situated at the northern end of Skegness seafront. New for 2012 is the meerkat exhibit where visitors can see these mischievous animals foraging for food and basking in the sunshine. Natureland has become known worldwide for its rescue of orphaned baby seal pups that become stranded on beaches around the Wash and has been successful in rearing and returning them to their natural environment. Feeding time is a great favourite with both children and adults. A children’s favourite is the pets’ corner where goats, sheep, rabbits, guinea pigs and chickens can be hand fed. For those looking to spot something a bit less ‘fluffy’, snakes, scorpions, and tarantulas can be found in the tropical house.

Lincoln by the sea SIXTY-TONNES of authentic seaside sand are on order, Punch & Judy are preparing to pack their bags and all is set-fair for the return of Lincoln by The Sea! Plans are well in hand for the comeback of Lincoln’s hottest Summertime attraction which has proved to be a phenomenal hit with families of all ages. This year “The Beach” is, once again, poised to be awash with buckets, spades and colourful balls and surrounded by traditional, stripey deckchairs, where mums and dads can relax while their youngsters burn-off their excess energy. Lincoln by the Sea - which launches on July 23, 2012, and runs right through until September 1 (inclusive) - will also feature children’s rides and floor games, so there is lots for everyone to enjoy. Best of all it is FREE!

56

Lincoln BIG events and promotions manager Michael Armstrong said: “We are thrilled to be able to announce the return of Lincoln by The Sea, which brings a real breath of seaside air into the heart of the city. “We know that it is really popular because we have heard of families who bring their children to “the Beach” almost every day of the Summer holidays! “With 2012 being such an important year with the Olympics, Paralympics and Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, families should watch out for an extra surprise element too. “On Thursday evenings, families also have the option of staying in the city and enjoying a snack or meal together, doing a spot of Thursday Late Night shopping and even going to see a film,” added Mr Armstrong.
