n the News:

A LUM E STABLISHES E NDOWMENT @ FSOP In a ceremony held in the lobby of the pharmacy building on Wednesday November 3, 2021, the FSOP received a very special gift from on of our very own alumni! Dr. Christopher Alvarado and his wife Stephanie made a $25,000 donation to the Feik School of Pharmacy. The donation creates the first alumni-endowed scholarship for pharmacy students, establishing the Dr. Christopher and Stephanie Alvarado Scholarship Endowment. Dr. Alvarado was a member of the school’s first graduating class in 2010. He spoke about his family’s decision to make the donation, despite still owing on school loans. He and his wife felt strongly about giving back to help others access the rich opportunities that he’s been afforded from his FSOP PharmD degree. Dean Maize was in attendance for the check presentation and expressed his excitement and gratitude on behalf of the school and the students.

P RELIMINARY C LASS OF 2021 NAPLEX S CORES Congratulations to the Class of 2021 and the FSOP faculty with the initial report of 93% passing rate on the NAPLEX! We had a 3% drop in NAPLEX scores, but the drop nationally was higher. I anticipate that we will be near the top of Texas schools again. Official results come out in January 2022. ⎯ Dean Maize

F IRST UIW P EDIATRIC C OVID V ACCINE C LINIC On November 2nd, the FDA and CDC granted Emergency Use Authorization for Pfizer COVID-19 vaccines for children ages 511. Texas is expected to receive a limited allocation of vaccines for this age group during the month of November. On Saturday, November 6th, UIW provided Pfizer COVID-19 vaccines for children ages 5-11 on Saturday in a vaccine clinic from 10:00-12:00 at the Feik School of Pharmacy. Second doses were administered on Saturday, December 4th. Dr. Nile Barnes, IPE and Community Engagement Coordinator and Assistant Professor of Pharmacy Practice, coordinated the clinic that was sponsored jointly by the UIW Medical Team, Nursing Cardinal Wellness Center, Feik School of Pharmacy, Ila Faye Miller School of Nursing and Health Professions, and the School of Osteopathic Medicine. The clinic received high interest from UIW employees and was well-attended. Pediatric Pfizer COVID-19 vaccines were administered to 98 children between the ages of 5 and 11.

FEIK SERVES AT VACCINE CLINICS Feik School of Pharmacy students, staff, and faculty have been actively involved throughout the year with Covid vaccine clinics. This has included clinics throughout the city and county, from the very small pop-up clinics serving just a few patients to very large events serving thousands of patients. As part of a UIW interprofessional vaccine program, pharmacy students have worked alongside nursing and osteopathic medicine students all across Bexar county and on campus. The on-campus events included several large clinics providing hundreds of vaccines to the UIW community at Founder’s Hall, and many smaller clinics at the Student Engagement Center serving several dozen of the UIW Community. Frequently, these smaller clinics also offered influenza vaccinations as well as primary and booster doses of Covid vaccines.

D

ean’s Corner:

Dear Alumni and community partners, The fast-approaching Christmas holiday leads me to look back over this year, reflecting on the renewed partnerships and developing friendships we have enjoyed with so many of you. If this pandemic has taught us anything, it is to value our human connections, especially those within our own families – and certainly our work and school families as well. I know full well that the successes attained by our students and our graduates alike are a collaborative effort achieved through the contributions of many. I was reminded in a meeting just today that more than a third of our students’ IPPE and APPE experiences are precepted by FSOP alumni. The investment of your time and resources in the next generation of pharmacists speaks volumes to me of the precious value of what we share – the opportunity to give back while serving our neighbors and promoting community wellbeing. Equipping students to achieve their dreams is a pivotally important pursuit, and I am so pleased at your participation in the journey. This year saw the school continue the trend in graduates’ licensure exams being above state and national averages. The FSOP Class of 2020 tied for the #1 spot in the state for highest NAPLEX scores and ranked #2 in MJPE scores. Collectively as a faculty and staff, we have worked so hard during this challenging year, both to maintain normalcy and to create new pathways to success where necessary. The achievements of our graduates make it all worthwhile, and spur us on as we launch into the new year. The official results for 2021 are not published until January, but the preliminary numbers look promising. We are excited about the first steps of a brand-new venture that will take place on Tuesday, January 4th, with the start of our first class in the FSOP Pharmacy Technician program. You can read more about it here in the newsletter. We are accepting applications for admission to this accreditation-track pharmacy technician program. I hope you enjoy reading about the happenings at the Feik this fall. You have my gratitude for your interest and support for this enormously important venture. Please keep our students in your thoughts and plans, by donating to the Mission Awards or general pharmacy scholarships at Giving | University of the Incarnate Word (uiw.edu). May you and yours have a safe and blessed holiday season. Praised be the Incarnate Word! With warmest wishes, David F. Maize, Dean and Professor of Pharmaceutical Sciences Education, Truth, Faith, Service, Innovation maize@uiwtx.edu, 210-883-1010

NOTES FROM THE ALUMNI NETWORK CHAIR Greetings, Fellow Alumni. First, allow me to start off by applauding the UIW-FSOP alumni frontline workers. You have, no doubt, been there to help the community get through this pandemic. Many places had to close down during the pandemic, but pharmacists went to work in overdrive. You have been there not only to provide your patients’ medications, but to assist them by answering their questions and to try to ease their anxiety during these difficult times. Thank goodness we can now say there is a light at the end of this tunnel. Great job, alumni! I am proud to say the 12th class from UIW-FSOP has now graduated from the Feik School of Pharmacy. Congratulations, Class of 2021, and to those alumni that have completed PGY1 and PGY2 residencies. Congratulations

also to the Class of 2011 on their 10-year anniversary and the Class of 2016 on their 5-year anniversary. We are looking forward to celebrating these milestones with you very soon.

Class of 2011 ten-year reunion

The Class of 2021 celebrated their commencement ceremonies outdoors at the Tom Benson Stadium on the UIW main campus. It turned out to be a fantastic night for the graduation. I want to send out a great big alumni hug to the class of 2021 and welcome you to the UIWFSOP Alumni Network! We are very proud of you.

I want to send out a big “Thank You” to all the alumni that showed up and kindly reached in their wallets for the UIW Big Give. This has been the best year yet for raising money for scholarships. We raised over Class of 2021 Graduation Ceremony $3,000 for both the Dr. Melissa Deleon and the UIW-FSOP Mission Scholarships. We are a strong alumni, and once again we will soon be able to get together to celebrate our brotherhood as UIW-FSOP graduates. Good luck to the Class of 2021 with your NAPLEX and MPJE exams. I know you will make the alumni network proud. I look forward to hearing from you, and entertaining any new ideas you may have for the alumni network. May God bless you and your families and stay safe. God bless, Chris Alvarado Pharm.D., R.Ph. UIW-FSOP Alumni Network Chair UIW Alumni Association President UIW Board of Trustees member

# feikleads ⎯ Student Highlights FSOP S TUDENT O RGS ’ F IRST C ALLING The primary function of the robust cluster of student organizations we have at the school is to support and broaden our students’ education. Org members certainly do participate in many service projects throughout the community, such as health fairs and immunization clinics. However, though less visible, their strongest role is played here in-house. Following are some examples of ways that our student organizations have served their classmates this fall. ❑ Christian Pharmacists Fellowship International On Wednesday, October 13th, Christian Pharmacists Fellowship International (CPFI) hosted their first worship night of the school year. At 6:00 p.m. the group gathered for an hour of singing and fellowship. Students in attendance were able to safely participate and worship while social distancing. Galo Gutierrez, from St. Dominic’s Catholic Church, graciously provided the music and vocal performance for the night. The hour was filled with numerous songs including House of The Lord by Phil Wickham, Good Good Father by Chris Tomlin, and Reckless Love by Cory Asbury. The night ended with fall themed donuts to fill people’s stomachs while accompanying everyone’s full hearts after a fantastic night praising the lord. ❑ Industry Pharmacists Organization Over the fall semester, the Industry Pharmacists Organization (IPhO) hosted a variety of events to help students expand the horizons of their career. In October, A fellow with UCB Pharma spoke with students about his unique experience with the company, and the steps he took to achieve the fellowship position. This event allowed students to consider pharmacy career paths that they may not have been exposed to otherwise and provided them with tools to begin seeking out and applying for such positions. Additionally, earlier this month IPhO hosted a virtual event for students regarding LinkedIn. This event allowed students to learn more about the professional platform, and how to utilize it to gain the most exposure and connections for professional growth. In the spring we hope to continue to inspire and educate students, allowing them to enter the workforce being fully aware of the vast array of opportunities that await them.

❑ Phi Lambda Sigma Pharmacy Leadership Society Phi Lambda Sigma (PLS) is conducting a month-long series of individual CV review 1-on-1 workshops, allowing students private 15-minute meetings with a professor of their choice. Professors review students’ CVs and make any recommended adjustments or additions. This affords students with a unique individual forum to ask many questions, and for professors to provide personal targeted feedback. It is hoped that this will be an important step in preparing students to experience success in residency or job interviews. PLS will kick off the new year with our first-ever Leadership Workshop in January 2022. It will be a 2-part Table Topics series to practice the art of public speaking. The first session will be introducing the students to Table Topics and having current PLS members participate in impromptu one-minute speeches. The second session will allow all students to participate in a table topic, while counting filler words and time limits. The top 3 students will earn prizes. ❑ Rho Chi Society The Rho Chi Society, Delta Eta Chapter, hosted their 2nd Annual Mock OSCE event in early November. This event provided first-year pharmacy students the opportunity to practice their applied pharmacy care skills prior to their official TOSCE and OSCE. Those who participated, were able to engage in several case scenarios and interact with Rho Chi members who served as the simulated patient or provider. Rho Chi successfully held both a virtual and the first in-person MOSCE event for P1 students to become more familiar and confident in their pharmacy care interactions. A special recognition to the APC I faculty, especially Dr. Rebekah Benitez, for their involvement in ensuring a successful event. In addition to and concurrent with their full course load, several members were also involved in providing weekly tutoring sessions for second-year pharmacy students. Tutoring opportunities were provided twice weekly on a volunteer basis for second year pharmacokinetic and pharmacotherapeutic modules.

AS H P M EMBERS P RESENT P OSTER Ms. Dianalyn Ulep, Class of 2023, SNPhA Chapter Delegate, was selected to virtually present her poster at the 2021 ASHP Midyear Clinical Meeting, December 9, 2021. Ms. Ulep was the primary author of the poster, Using the Vaccine Adverse Event reporting System (VAERS) to Evaluate a Patient with Covid-19 Vaccine-induced Rhabdomyolysis: A Case Report. Co-authors: Ulep D and Huynh T. Ms. Ulep and Mr. Huynh did their rotation with Dr. Hien Ha at Christus Westover Hills, where they delved further into the unique case of a patient they met on daily rounds. They had a great journey of discovery in researching to help their patient.

K APPA P SI S ERVES Kappa Psi Brothers started off the semester with assisting APhA at their fall immunization clinic at Ingram Park Mall, immunizing the public with flu and COVID-19 vaccines. Our brothers also gave back to the community by volunteering at the Texas Diaper Bank, packaging over 8,000 diapers for children and families in need.

NHPA @ UHS F LU C LINIC Members of the FSOP student chapter of the National Hispanic Pharmacists Association (NHPA), along with Dean David Maize, volunteered at the University Health System Mass Flu Clinic on September 18th at the Freeman Coliseum in San Antonio. FSOP S TUDENT RECEIVES S INGLE C ARE “B EST OF THE B EST ” A WARD Sarah Marie McCreight is the SingleCare 2021 Best Pharmacy Intern because of her dedication to pharmacy, even while she is taking classes to become a pharmacist. She works behind the scenes as a hazardous compounding intern, making custom dosages and strengths of medications that can be dangerous in large quantities, like hormone replacement therapies. In her free time, she takes extra shifts working the pharmacy counter at H-E-B or at vaccine clinics, so she can get the patient interaction she loves. With these two complementary experiences, she’s on her way to being a well-rounded pharmacist when she finishes school — well-versed in customer service and prescription chemistry. She was nominated by H-E-B because of her excellence and competency in both areas. Ms. McCreight is the first person in her family to ever attend college, so choosing a degree plan and a career seemed daunting at first. In her internship experiences and Photo by Klare Perez; produced by Natalie Gialluca vaccine clinics, she’s been able to interact with hundreds of people and discover how motivating it is to her to have her patients place their trust in her. Ms. McCreight reflected that “By becoming a pharmacist, I will be able to interact with people, make a positive impact, promote healthy lifestyles, and make a difference in my patients’ lives. NCPA N ATIONAL M EETING R EFLECTION : S T A R T B E F O R E Y O U A R E R E A D Y ! New, meaningful connections and experiences were scarce during the COVID-19 pandemic, in which students pushed through 1-1.5 years of coursework from the confines of their own homes. As students remained hopeful and continued to prepare for their professional careers, the only ways to connect with others were through a screen or chat box. While many students continued to search for mentors within their specific niches, these virtual meetings and strings of emails with thought leaders and industry professionals quickly rose to their maximum potential. Our UIW National Community Pharmacists Association (NCPA) 2021-2022 Student Chapter President, Meagan Garza, chose to break free from social isolation by going big and going far away from home. She took a trip to Charlotte, North Carolina October 9–12 to attend the 2021 NCPA Annual Meeting as an eager, resourceful, and resilient student pharmacist. She refused to let any more time or opportunities slip by, and instead chose to fully immerse herself in a community of like-minded individuals at various stages of their pharmacy career. Ms. Garza attended as the sole representative of the UIW Feik School of Pharmacy (FSOP), to create new connections and strengthen established friendships with student pharmacists and pharmacy professionals from across the nation. Meagan described her experience as one of her greatest investments, for she learned invaluable lessons from industry leaders, shook the hands of many frontline heroes, and formed connections more meaningful than she could ever have imagined. She returned to Texas to pay forward the kindness and wisdom she received, by sharing all the golden nuggets she collected throughout her trip. The most noteworthy included:

1. Start before you are ready. Do not let the fear of failure keep you from achieving your goals. 2. Be scrappy. Use your drive and creativity to achieve your goals no matter the resources at hand. 3. Be weird. Seek to innovate and transform in a way that is all your own. 4. Fall seven times, stand up eight. You are more resilient than you know. Do not give up. Whether you are a student, faculty, staff, or alumni member of the UIW FSOP, the NCPA Student Chapter encourages you to invest in yourself. Seize every meaningful opportunity that comes your way, and know that there is always a fellow Cardinal rooting for you. Written by: Ms. Meagan Ashley Garza PharmD Candidate, Class of 2023 NCPA Student Chapter President 2021-2022

S TUDENT P UBLISHED IN T HE V OICE OF V ETERINARY P HARMACY Ms. Megan Ashley Garza had an article published in the American College of Veterinary Pharmacists’ Summer 2021 issue of The Voice of Veterinary Pharmacy. Ms. Garza’s article, a Collaborative Approach to Complementary and Alternative Veterinary Medicine, presented a comprehensive overview of modalities and pharmacy considerations in veterinary practice, for both companion and food-producing animals.

CPFI’ S O PERATION C HRISTMAS C HILD D RIVE During October and November, the FSOP chapter of Christian Pharmacists Fellowship International (CPFI) has been collecting donations for Operation Christmas Child. Operation Christmas Child was established by Samaritan’s Purse in 1993 to fill shoeboxes with gifts for children who lived in Bosnia and were impacted by the war. Since then, shoeboxes have continued to be sent out every year to children around the world. CPFI at the Feik School of Pharmacy has held three shoebox packing parties for Operation Christmas Child on October 29th, November 5th, and November 11th. During each packing, students were able to assemble shoeboxes containing personal care items, clothing, accessories, crafts, activities, school supplies, and toys. Along with the items that were placed in each box, each child was written a personal Christmas note by a CPFI student. CPFI assembled a total of 241 shoeboxes to be sent out this holiday season for children in need. With these gifts, CPFI hopes to share God’s love and spread the joy of Christmas!

AP H A R ESUMES S EMI -A NNUAL H EALTH F AIR This fall, APhA-ASP members have been thankful for the opportunity to be back out in the community and doing what was so missed in the last year and a half: participating in health fairs and community events across San Antonio. In October, APhA-ASP hosted our chapter’s semi-annual Ingram Park Mall Health Fair. Members performed health screenings, administered flu vaccines, and educated patients on approaches to improving their health. Diabetes, hypertension, and other chronic conditions didn’t simply go away when COVID-19 appeared on the scene. So, our student pharmacists jumped at the chance to use the knowledge and training we have gained to bring awareness to these issues in our community.

APhA-ASP chapter members administered 79 flu vaccines to community members, and performed 20 blood pressure screenings. Through the national APhA-ASP Patient Care Projects, members were also able to educate patients on topics such as recognizing cardiovascular disease risk factors and supporting vaccine confidence within the community. Dr. Kimberly Cauthon, Associate Professor of Pharmacy Practice (pictured at right end), precepted the event. The organization’s mission was to show community members the service role of pharmacists in public health.
