WELCOME ON BOARD

It is my pleasure to welcome you to The London Nautical School. Situated in the very heart of central London, the school was established over 100 years ago as an educational establishment to help all pupils achieve their full potential, this remains our core purpose. Our aim is for pupils to experience an education that develops all aspects of their personality and encourages them to become well-qualified, secure, happy, young adults able to manage themselves personally, socially, and academically and who are tolerant of difference. At LNS we believe in excellence for all and have the highest expectations for every one of our pupils. We want all our young people to enjoy a memorable and successful education in an inclusive environment, where each individual’s unique talents are recognised and valued. OUR SCHOOL HISTORY

We are very proud of our heritage having formed as a direct result of the sinking of the RMS Titanic in 1912. Several nautical training schools were introduced to improve seamanship; The London Nautical School is the only one of those training schools that remains with a nautical and maritime ethos. As an institution the school has been in existence since 1915 then as the Rotherhithe Nautical School as it was known; based in three rooms at Rotherhithe New Road (Higher Grade) Boys School. By 1937 the nautical training section of Rotherhithe New Road School had outgrown its premises and the “Rotherhithe Nautical School” became a separate institution which moved to Galleywall Road School in Rotherhithe. The school was evacuated during the Second World War and returned briefly to Rotherhithe before moving to our next home on Broadwall in Southwark. Finally in 1965 the London Nautical School arrived at our current location on Stamford Street, still maintaining its focus on supplying recruits for the Navy and Merchant Navy well into the 1970’s.

STUDY AT LNS

CURRICULUM AND ASSESSMENT At the London Nautical School we provide an exciting and challenging learning experience through lessons and crosscurricular activities. Our curriculum is designed to support each individual on their learning journey and is devised to take into account the rich history and diversity of the school. We develop all our pupils to be successful, responsible, aspiring and literate learners, capable of achieving their potential and succeeding in their educational goals. Learning takes place both in and outside of the classroom, we run various trips to museums, the theatre, sporting events and outdoor residentials. We are privileged as we get to know our pupils as individuals and understand how each learns best; building lasting relationships and fostering confidence in our young people. Our assessment strategy is designed to support pupils’ achievement and is tailored to the individual through in class feedback and formal assessment points. We believe passionately in developing authenticity and independence and we nurture our pupils, offering advice and guidance throughout their time at our school, focusing on key transition stages from Year 6 through to life after Sixth Form.

SAILING SKILLS The school is founded on the basis of duty, resilience, confidence and independence. For a century we have upheld and revered the tradition of seamanship and acknowledge its contribution to educating young men of strong fibre. This is a living legacy from our past. Accordingly, bound in the ethos and expectations of our school’s unique nautical curriculum, are activities which develop these core characteristics in our pupils. Have you ever wondered who operates the Thames Barrier? Who steers a Thames clipper? Who opens Tower Bridge to let ships pass through? Via which path a young man becomes the First Sea Lord? In order to answer this, for one hundred years, one has had to look to former pupils of The London Nautical School. The curriculum is a practical and theoretical induction into seafaring. From twelve years of age, our pupils find themselves at the helm of a boat upon the open water. They are all challenged to master sailing and kayaking using our fleet of boats in London’s docklands. They steer their course through the intricacies of the estuary just as they navigate the theorem of Pythagoras or Spanish grammar. From Year 10 pupils can opt to further their Nautical Studies at The London Nautical School through a direct vocational pathway into an enormously diverse career. The maritime world remains an important part of British society as well as underpinning a globalised planet and its functioning. In steering the ship of their fates our pupils are also learning how to lead in a changing world.
