WELCOME

TO MALMESBURY SIXTH FORM

Thank you for taking the time to learn more about our amazing Sixth Form. We know that post-16 study is the most exciting period in education, and we take pride in the support and outcomes our students receive. Malmesbury School Sixth Form is a very special place that encapsulates our school’s values of being Happy, Caring and Excellent.

Students who attend our Sixth Form are given the very best experience that allows them to flourish after their A Levels; they have the pick of universities, courses, and apprenticeships. The outcomes that our students achieve places us amongst the very best Sixth Forms in the country and we know that these outcomes are not possible without first-rate pastoral care and careers guidance.

I am so proud of our Sixth Formers every year and our provision is truly exceptional. Please take the time to gather as much information as you need, speak to our students and staff, and be reassured that you are making the right choice in joining us.

EXCELLENCE ACADEMIC

We are a traditional school Sixth Form offering a broad range of A Level qualifications. We ask students to choose 3 or 4 subjects from the wide variety of courses – see below for our extensive list of subjects. A detailed programme of guidance during the application process ensures that students are placed on the right courses to achieve their future aspirations. Students with a very strong GCSE grade profile may opt to study 4 A Levels. Most students will study 3 A Levels. Entry requirements: Grade 4 in English (Language or Literature) and 4 in Maths. Grade 6 in the subjects you wish to study. If you are selecting a new subject (like Sociology) then we ask that you demonstrate at least three Grade 6s across your results.

MEDICINE GROUP OXBRIDGE &

We run a dedicated group to provide information and support with applications to Oxbridge, medicine, dentistry, and veterinary studies. Students applying to these highly competitive courses are identified early and are invited to join this programme. This group meets regularly to discuss and share research and experiences as well as receive specific help with their personal statements and interviews. All applicants receive a mock interview from an Oxford professor prior to the ‘real’ thing. We have strong links with Merton College, Oxford, and run day trips to the college for students to get a flavour of life at Oxford. In addition, a representative from Cambridge University visits the Sixth Form each year to deliver a presentation on life at Cambridge.

OPPORTUNITIES LEADERSHIP

Universities and employers alike value students who have developed a range of inter-personal skills and demonstrate their potential as leaders. Through our Excellence Programme, we actively encourage students to engage in a variety of activities to develop leadership skills whilst contributing to the school and wider community. Head Students lead the Sixth Form Student Council and students are given the autonomy to organise fundraising events, trips, and social activities. They represent the school in several formal events and act as student leaders for the younger students in the school.

EDINBURGH AWARD DUKE OF

Students are encouraged to participate in the Silver and Gold Award. Through a DofE programme, young people have fun, make friends, improve their self-esteem, and build confidence. They gain essential skills and attributes for work and life such as resilience, problemsolving, team-working, communication and drive, enhancing CVs and university and job applications.

INTERNATIONAL TRIPS GLOBAL ACTION

We work closely with Global Action who deliver once in a lifetime international educational trips with the core aims of developing students’ leadership, communication and teamwork skills whilst enhancing their understanding of what it means to be a global citizen.

The wide range of extra-curricular opportunities are what I’ve enjoyed most about my time at Sixth Form, from the EPQ, to water polo on Wednesday afternoons. The balance of independence and support from staff has made the two years thoroughly enjoyable. STUDENT

DESTINATIONS CAREERS ADVICE &

Malmesbury Sixth Form benefits from expert careers advice and all students are entitled to a careers appointment to discuss their future pathways. Most of our students choose to apply to university, and we have a strong record of placing students at the top universities in the UK. On average, around 60% of students secure a place at a Russell Group university.

Every year several students successfully join a higher-level apprenticeship scheme or an arts institution. Some of our leavers choose to take a gap year or seek employment. All these choices are supported by our individualised programme of careers guidance.

ACADEMIC LEADER DEDICATED

We take student progress seriously and rigorously track student achievement. Challenging target grades are set, and our aim is to inspire students to achieve their full potential. The academic leader will work with class teachers, the Heads of Year 12/13 and the Head of Sixth Form to ensure that any issues are identified early, and tailored support packages are put in place.

& WELL BEING PASTORAL CARE

At Malmesbury Sixth Form we treat all students as individuals and support is tailored to meet the specific needs of students. As well as the Head of Sixth Form, Heads of Year and Tutor team we have two counsellors on site. A Levels and the step into young adulthood can be stressful at times, the counsellors provide a safe and supportive service to help our Sixth Formers discuss a variety of issues. Students can refer themselves confidentially or ask to be referred by their tutor. As well as morning registration, students have a fortnightly onehour tutorial. Tutors deliver a varied programme which focuses on:

● How to be a successful student

● How to be a successful adult

● How to be successful with future plans

Students will also have a regular one-to-one meeting with their tutor to talk about their progress, next steps, and other pastoral issues.

While we have independence, the teachers are always willing to help - it’s what sold me on staying. STUDENT

OPPORTUNITIES SOCIAL

There are plenty of opportunities that students can get involved with throughout their time in the Sixth Form. Here is a selection of just some of the things that ran last year! Students are encouraged to join the student union and organise their own social activities.

● Sports teams and clubs

● School productions and concerts

ALUMNI

● Sixth Form trips

● Charity events

● Team building activities

We are immensely proud of the success of our alumni. We enjoy welcoming our alumni back at various careers events and assemblies throughout the year. Alumni are great role models for our current students and are often well placed to offer practical support to students as they start their careers.

COLLABORATION

We work closely with two other schools in our multi-academy trust, Bradon Forest School and Sir William Romney’s School, to deliver a collaborative post-16 experience that provides students from these schools with a supportive progression route into a school Sixth Form environment. Students enrol four days a week at Malmesbury and one day a week at their other school. They are taught the same curriculum in both settings, often with one-to-one support and very small groups in their ‘home’ school.
