FLORIDA SOUTHERN COLLEGE

Founded by the United Methodist Church in 1883, Florida Southern is the oldest private college in the state of Florida. With an enrollment of more than 2,000 students, Florida Southern offers more than 50 undergraduate majors and distinctive graduate programs in business administration, education, and nursing. Florida Southern is listed in the prestigious Fiske Guide To Colleges, the nation’s top-selling college guide, and annually is ranked in the Forbes magazine, The Princeton Review, and U.S. News & World Report listings of the nation’s best colleges. Studies show that approximately 94% of Florida Southern graduates are working full-time or are enrolled in graduate school within six months of graduation. Situated on the north shore of Lakeland’s scenic Lake Hollingsworth, Florida Southern is home to the world’s largest single-site collection of architecture by renowned architect Frank Lloyd Wright, including the recently refurbished Water Dome. The 100-acre campus also features a number of other outstanding facilities – the 2,500-seat George W. Jenkins Field House (for basketball and volleyball); Barnett Field (for softball and soccer); the 1,800-seat Branscomb Auditorium; 11 residence halls and several College-owned apartments and houses; the Robert A. Davis Performing Arts Center; the Roux Library; and the Nina B. Hollis Wellness Center, which includes a state-of-the-art fitness center, recreational facilities, and an NCAA competition-size outdoor swimming pool. The College recently opened the new Marshall and Vera Lea Rinker Technology Center, which is staffed 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The Rinker building is equipped with the latest technology and Wi-Fi, as are other computer labs on campus, such as the popular new TûTû’s Cyber Café in the library. The Sarah D. and L. Kirk McKay, Jr., Archives Center, adjacent to the Roux Library, houses records from the Florida Conference of the United Methodist Church; Frank Lloyd Wright drawings and documents; the Lawton M. Chiles Center for Florida History; and the Florida Citrus Archives. There are several new academic buildings on campus, including the state-of-the-art Joe K. and Alberta Blanton Nursing Building, home to the College’s growing School of Nursing; and the Dr. Marcene H. and Robert E. Christoverson Humanities Building, which features contemporary classrooms, a modern language lab, film studies center, and art gallery. With Lakeland’s population at more than 94,000, Florida Southern is in the heart of central Florida and is only about an hour’s drive from the major metropolitan areas of Tampa and Orlando. Such well-known attractions as Walt Disney World, Universal Studios, Epcot Center, Sea World, Busch Gardens and some of the world’s most popular beaches are only a short drive from campus. Major League Baseball’s Detroit Tigers make Lakeland their annual spring training home, and several other big league teams train in the nearby area. Money magazine has ranked Lakeland among the top “Best Places To Live” for medium-sized Southern cities. Some of Florida Southern’s prominent alumni include professional golfers Lee Janzen and Rocco Mediate; Major League Baseball player Matt Joyce (Tampa Bay Rays); Jim France, chairman of International Speedway Corp. (which owns Daytona International Speedway) and vice chairman of NASCAR; Publix Super Markets, Inc. Vice Chairman Barney Barnett; and Florida Supreme Court Justice Fred Lewis.

Florida Southern College Frank Lloyd Wright’s “Child of the Sun”

The Danforth Chapel is one of two chapels on campus designed by Frank Lloyd Wright.

The Thad Buckner Building is home to the Frank Lloyd Wright “Child of the Sun” Visitor Center.

The Esplanades, totaling 1.5 miles, line the west campus of Florida Southern College. The “covered walkways” connect the structures, actually weaving in and out, providing the pattern for the complex.

Florida Southern is home to the world’s only Frank Lloyd Wright-designed planetarium.

Frank Lloyd Wright often visited Florida Southern College during his 20-year relationship with the college.

Founded by the United Methodist Church, Florida Southern College is one of the oldest private colleges in the state, tracing its beginnings to a small seminary in Orlando in 1883. The tie to its founding church has remained constant and is today, a proud part of the College’s heritage and a bright beacon for the future. Florida Southern moved to Lakeland in the heart of Florida’s citrus belt in 1922 and began the construction of a campus that would eventually become a national landmark. The beautiful 100-acre campus, on the north shore of Lake Hollingsworth, includes the world’s largest collection of buildings by master architect Frank Lloyd Wright. Florida Southern’s West Campus, now known throughout the world, actually had its inception in the mind of Dr. Ludd M. Spivey, president of the college from 1925-1957.

2

Annie Pfeiffer Chapel, completed in 1941, was the first of Wright’s designs at Florida Southern College.

In 1935 he conceived the idea of an ultra-modern campus, designed by the world’s leading architect. Ground was broken two years later for the first building in the Wright collection, the Annie Pfeiffer Chapel. What Frank Lloyd Wright created on the campus is amazing. His original work is still as modern and exciting as the newest buildings still on many architect’s drawing boards. It is, perhaps, symbolic that the greatest concentration of his genius should be located at a small, private institution of higher learning. Perhaps he describes it best, “...out of the ground and into the light, a child of the sun...the college of tomorrow.”

DR. ANNE B. KERR College President Since her appointment as Florida Southern College’s seventeenth president in 2004, Dr. Anne Kerr’s visionary leadership has enhanced the student experience on campus and increased the college’s national prominence. Under her direction, the institution has renewed its commitment to educate the whole person—academically, socially, spiritually and physically—in order to insure that students leave prepared to make a positive and consequential impact on our world. Early in her tenure, Dr. Kerr oversaw implementation of a comprehensive strategic plan for the College that was designed to enrich all facets of our student-centered culture. Opportunities for active learning and leadership were increased; innovative, engaged, and personalized instruction were prioritized; and the College’s scholar-athlete program became a model for NCAA Division II athletic programs. Recent college improvements include ongoing restoration projects on the Frank Lloyd Wright campus (the Water Dome, Esplanades, and Annie Pfeiffer Chapel) and the construction (Fall 2010) of a Frank Lloyd Wright Usonian House for use as a campus

PETE MEYER Director of Athletics Now in his third year (201011) as Director of Athletics at Florida Southern College, Pete Meyer saw Moccasin teams enjoy considerable success in 2009-10. The men’s golf team captured its 12th NCAA national title and the school’s 27th, while the women’s golf team finished third. Swimmer Jeb Halfacre won the 200-yard backstroke at the NCAA championship, giving FSC its first individual national champion in swimming. NCAA postseason bids went to women’s soccer, golf and tennis and men’s cross country, basketball, golf, tennis and baseball. Both swimming teams and the women’s cross country team had individual NCAA qualifiers. FSC won SSC titles in men’s cross country (13th straight), men’s basketball and men’s golf. All of that success combined to give the Moccasins a 23rdplace finish in the 2009-10 Learfield Sports/NACDA Cup standings and their ninth top 25 finish in the program’s history. In Meyer’s first year as AD (2008-09), Moccasin teams produced three SSC championships (men’s cross country, men’s basketball, softball) and a fifth-place national finish in women’s golf. Eleven FSC teams went to NCAA postseason competition. Named to the AD position Feb. 21, 2008, he officially assumed his duties July 1, 2008, when Lois Webb retired. In the fall of 2008, Meyer was given the additional title of Dean

Visitor Center, which will be the first Wright design built since 1966. Other new construction includes the two-building Barnett Residential Complex and the Christoverson Humanities Building (all three designed by world-renowned architect Robert A.M. Stern), the McKay Archives Center, the Blanton Nursing Building, the Rinker Technology Center, and TûTû’s Café (located in the Roux Library). Further improvements include the complete renovation of the student dining facility (Wynee’s Bistro), residence hall and campus-wide technology upgrades, and a campus beautification project featuring dozens of interconnected plazas and gardens. Dr. Kerr graduated from Mercer University and received her M.S. and Ph.D. in Educational Psychology from Florida State University. Prior to assuming the Presidency at Florida Southern, she served as Vice President for Advancement both at the University of Richmond and at Rollins College. She has held numerous volunteer leadership roles, and currently serves on the boards of SunTrust Bank Mid-Florida, All Saints’ Academy, EarthLinked Technologies, Inc., the Polk Museum of Art, and the Florida Chamber of Commerce. Presently, she is completing a two-year term as president of the Sunshine State Conference. Dr. Kerr and her husband, Roy, have a sixteen-year-old son, Ed, who plays baseball for All Saints’ Academy. Dr. Roy Kerr is a retired professor of Spanish and a baseball historian, whose recent publications include The Loving of the Game: a Baseball Memoir (2007); Sliding Billy Hamilton: the Life and Times of Baseball’s First Great Leadoff Man (2010), and Roger Connor: Home Run King of Nineteenth-Century Baseball (2011). of Wellness, putting the operation of the Hollis Wellness Center, as well as the water ski program and campus intramurals under his direction. Meyer, who has been at Florida Southern since 1998, was the Moccasins’ head baseball coach from 2002 through 2008. He also served as assistant athletics director for Webb from February of 2006 until his AD appointment. As baseball coach, Meyer spent six full seasons as head coach, guiding the Moccasins to their ninth NCAA Division II national title in 2005 with a 51-11 record. His head coaching record at Florida Southern was 257-111-1, while his overall record as a head coach was 296-141-1. Thirty-four Moccasin baseball players were drafted or signed professional contracts during Meyer’s tenure at FSC. Before officially assuming the reigns of head coach, Meyer had served for over three years as Florida Southern’s top assistant coach under Chuck Anderson. He also was the program’s recruiting coordinator. Prior to joining the FSC coaching staff, Meyer spent five seasons at Valdosta State, working under legendary head coach Tommy Thomas. Before his stint at Valdosta State, Meyer was head baseball coach at Oglethorpe University in Atlanta, where he coordinated the start of the school’s Division III program in 1991. His Oglethorpe teams went 39-30 in two seasons (1992-93). He served as a graduate assistant at Valdosta State from 1988-90, while earning his M. Ed. in physical education. A fouryear baseball letterman at the College of Wooster in Ohio, Meyer graduated in 1987 with a B.A. in speech communication. Meyer is married to the former Julie Newnum. The couple has three children, 22-year old Ross and 20-year old Mitchell, both of whom are enrolled at FSC, and 19-year old Megan, who attends Trinity University in Texas.

Florida Southern College

COACH DOUG GORDIN Doug Gordin added national

championship number five to his resume last May, as he guided the Moccasins to the 2010 NCAA Division II Men’s Championship. The Moccasins took the lead for good early in the final round and went on to win by seven strokes, claiming their 12th national title in men’s golf and the 27th overall in school history. They also won their 16th Sunshine State Conference men’s golf championship. With five national titles to his credit, Gordin ranks sixth among all NCAA coaches in national championships won. The man he succeeded at Florida Southern, Charley Matlock, ranks fifth with seven national titles. Gordin has been men’s head golf coach at Florida Southern since 1995. He has led the Mocs to four other NCAA championships, in 1996 and an unprecedented three straight in 1998, 1999 and 2000. In addition to the team titles, the Mocs have produced three individual national champions under Gordin in Matt Saglio (1999), Jeff Klauk (2000) and Steve Sokol (2001). After his first NCAA championship in 1996, Gordin was named the GCAA National Coach of the Year, an honor he would again win in 1998, 1999 and 2000. He was also the South Region Coach of the Year and was named National Coach of the Year by Golf Week magazine. As a further tribute to his career, Gordin was inducted into the Hall of Fame by the Golf Coaches Association of America in January, 2001, where he joined his father, Dr. Richard Gordin, a member of the inaugural Class of 1980. The younger Gordin is one of just three NCAA Division II coaches among the GCAA inductees. Before coming to Florida Southern, Gordin was the golf coach at Georgia Southern College in Statesboro, Georgia, for 13 years. While at Georgia Southern, he coached two PGA players (Jodie Mudd and Gene Sauers), led the Eagles to four conference championships and six runner-up titles, coached five GCAA All-Americans and was named the NCAA South District coach of the year and conference coach of the year an unprecedented four times. Now in his 32nd year overall as a collegiate coach, Gordin is no stranger to success on the links. Prior to coaching at Georgia Southern in 1981, he served two years on the staff at the University of Alabama under Conrad Rehling and one season as the head coach at Campbell University. As an undergraduate, Gordin played for his father at Ohio Wesleyan. The younger Gordin served as team captain his senior season when the Battlin’ Bishops finished sixth at the NCAA tournament. In the fall of 2002, Gordin was honored by his alma mater with the Robert Strimer Award for unusually significant contributions to intercollegiate athletics. In 2007 he was named to the FSC Sports Hall of Fame. A native of Delaware, Ohio, Gordin was inducted into the Delaware Hayes High School Hall of Fame in October of 2010. After graduating from Ohio Wesleyan with a bachelor’s degree in health and physical education in 1978, Gordin joined the staff at Alabama, serving as assistant coach and assistant pro for the Crimson Tide. While in Tuscaloosa he earned his master’s degree. Gordin is a teaching consultant to the National Golf Foundation

and is a member of the NCAA-USGA Relations Committee. He has been active in the GCAA for several years, even serving a stint as the organization’s national president. He is also a past chairman of the NCAA District III-South selection committee. Gordin and his 20-year old daughter, Gretchen, reside in Lakeland. She is a student at the University of Florida.

Coach Doug Gordin poses with the five NCAA championship trophies won by the Moccasins under his tenure.

Florida Southern College Brian Richey Student Assistant Coach After earning honorable mention AllAmerica recognition last season, Brian Richey is serving as a student coach for the Moccasins this season. Richey was the Moccasins’ top golfer down the stretch last spring. At the Sunshine State Conference Tournament, he was tied for first at the end of regulation with a 207, but lost in a playoff and finished second. At the NCAA Super Regional, he tied for fourth with a 214 and became the Moccasins’ lone qualifier for the NCAA Division II Championship, where he finished in a tie for 20th with a 214. He played in every tournament last season, was a counter in all but one and had a 73.46 stroke average, third-best on the team. His career-best score of 65 in the final round of the SSC Tournament was the Moccasins’ lowest round of the season. A graduate of Lakeland High School, Richey won the county golf tournament and was named Polk County co-golfer of the year as a senior. He graduated last spring with a degree in sports management from Florida Southern.

FSC Men’s Golf Team Wins 12th National Title

2010 NCAA DIVISION II NATIONAL CHAMPIONS (L-R): Peter Creighton, Shelton Smith, Danny Evelyn, Matt Stauch, Jude Eustaquio, Student Assistant Coach Brian Richey, Head Coach Doug Gordin.

(On May 21, 2010, the Florida Southern College men’s golf team won the NCAA National Championship giving the Moccasins’ men’s golf program a NCAA Division II record 12 national titles. The following, written by FSC assistant SID Tim Carpenter, appeared on the Moccasin webpage following the championship.)

pionship overall, the fifth under current head coach Doug Gordin, and their first since 2000. No other team has won more than six national championships at the Division II level. Florida Southern was never far from first place at any point in the tournament, but Nova Southeastern and Chico State each had their day at the top of the standings. In the end, the Sharks really weren’t a factor, and the Mocs’ final round score of 307 was enough to widen the gap between them and Chico State. Central Missouri made it interesting though, with three eagles on the back nine that got them within five strokes; but the Mules finished before Florida Southern did and could only watch as the Moccasins did what they had to do. The Mocs ended up having to count 81’s from both Eustaqio and Peter Creighton, but Chico State had a pair of 80’s to nearly balance it out. It was the first time all week Florida Southern counted a score over 80, and only the second time Chico State had to do it. Still, Creighton made his presence felt earlier with back-to-back rounds of 75 to start the tournament, and Eustaqio picked the Mocs up with a 72 in round two before his oneunder par on the back nine Wednesday helped keep the Mocs within striking distance at the end of round three.

May 21, 2010 NOBLESVILLE, IN – Earlier in the week, Florida Southern moved up to #2 in the national rankings as the Moccasins began play in the NCAA Division II Finals. They won’t stay there very long. Pulling away early from Chico State before holding off a late charge by Central Missouri, Florida Southern went on to win the 2010 Division II National Championship, the 12th national title in team history. Chico State had wrested the lead away from Florida Southern on Thursday, but one day later, the Moccasins grabbed it back. Only one stroke separated the two teams going into the final round, and the Mocs made up the difference right away and never surrendered the lead once they had it. Matt Stauch had a lot to do with that, as the senior birdied two of his first three holes and added another one on #6 that put him at threeunder for the round. The Mocs also got a birdie from Jude Eustaquio on his first hole that officially put them ahead to stay. Stauch continued to carry the Mocs the rest of the day, and it was fitting that his birdie putt on 18 was the final punch that allowed Florida Southern to celebrate its 12th national cham-

Where the Mocs really made up ground on Friday was with Shelton Smith and Stauch. Smith shot a two-over par 74 and Stauch finished with a 71. That was a total of 11 strokes better than Chico State’s top two counters and dead even with the top two from Central Missouri, which also had to count an 80. The Moccasins didn’t count Danny Evelyn’s 82, but like Eustaqio and Creighton, Evelyn was part of the reason Florida

2010-11 Men’s Golf Southern was even within striking distance going into Friday. His 73 on Thursday was the Mocs’ best score of the day and helped keep them within one shot of the lead. The final round was historic before it ever began. Due to impending thunderstorms in the afternoon, the Division II Men’s Golf Committee utilized the administrative cut option under NCAA guidelines, and trimmed the field from 20 teams to 15, giving them a better chance of completing a full round. Also making the cut were the top seven golfers not on one of the 15 remaining teams, and tee times were adjusted to ensure an earlier finish. It was the first time on record the NCAA was forced to use that option, and put schools like Florida Southern in a dangerous position. If the final round was not completed in its entirety, the score would revert back to the end of the third round, and Chico State would be crowned national champion.

was in fourth place with a 10-stroke deficit. Barry, which had been ranked #1 in the country entering the finals, finished fifth with a margin of 12 strokes, and Nova Southeastern was sixth, 20 strokes behind Florida Southern. The individual champion was individual qualifier Cyril Bouniol of Abilene Christian who was the only golfer in the field to break par. Holding on to his lead from Thursday, Bouniol shot a three-under 285 for the tournament, six strokes better than Justin Yoder of Central Missouri. Florida Southern’s Matt Stauch was third with a 293, trailing the Bouniol by eight shots. Shelton Smith was tied for eighth with a 299, Jude Eustaquio tied for 30th with a 310, and both Danny Evelyn and Peter Creighton tied for 41st with scores of 312.

NCAA GOLF CHAMPIONSHIPS - DIV. II Shelton Smith and Jude Eustaquio check out their championship rings following the team’s recognition at Florida Southern’s campus-wide convocation.

Fortunately for the Moccasins, that didn’t happen. The round was completed, though higher winds than the first three days certainly played a role in Friday’s scores. Florida Southern, Chico State, Nova Southeastern and Western New Mexico, four of the top five teams entering the final round, all had their highest scores of the tournament. Gordin’s assessment of the course early in the week proved to be correct too, as he called it one of the most difficult he’s seen in Division II golf. It was the first time since 1995 the national champion had a final score over 1,200. Florida Southern finished with a 4-day total of 1,206. While Central Missouri was seven shots behind and Chico State eight back, defending national champion Sonoma State

FIVE MOCS ON 2010 PGA TOUR

Barney Barnett, Lee Janzen, Leon Sikes, Jr., and George Jenkins (seated), admire Lee’s 1993 U.S. Open Championship Trophy during the “Pop” Sikes Golf Day.

“POP” SIKES GOLF DAY Started in 1976 by the late Jimmie Sikes as a way to honor his father, Leon “Pop” Sikes, and help support the Florida Southern golf program, the “Pop” Sikes Golf Day has helped enable the Moccasin golf team to win 12 NCAA Division II National Championships, as well as six national runner-up finishes and three third place finishes. “None of the success that the golf team has had could have been possible without the “Pop” Sikes Golf Day,” says former FSC coach Charley Matlock. “It’s because of the love and concern of the Sikes family that the Golf Day has been so successful. From the beginning, they made sure this was a first-class event.” Along with the Sikes family, others have contributed to this annual event. George Jenkins, founder of Publix Super Markets, opened his Lone Palm Golf Club facilities each year to stage the event. John Mack and Clayton Lyons helped to organize the event in its infant years, while Joe Hodge, Head Pro at Lone Palm, took charge of the organizational details at the golf course. Held annually in October, “Pop” Sikes Golf Day has raised approximately $1.25 million and has averaged over 100 participants since its inception.

For the 2010 professional golf season, five former Florida Southern standouts – Marco Dawson, Lee Janzen, Jeff Klauk, Rocco Mediate and Darron Stiles – played on either the PGA or the Nationwide Tour. Dawson, a teammate of Janzen and Mediate at Florida Southern, divided his 2010 season between the PGA and Nationwide Tours. In his career, he has earned over $4.7 million combined from both tours. He was a member of the Moccasins’ 1982 and 1985 national championship teams. A three-time All-American and the 1986 NCAA Division II champion, Janzen is a two-time winner of the U.S. Open (1993 and 1998). He has won a total of eight PGA events during his career and earned over $15 million since joining the tour in 1989. He played on the 1985 and 1986 national championship teams. Klauk had an outstanding rookie season on the PGA Tour in 2009, but a back injury limited him to just 13 events in 2010. Nevertheless, he’s earned $1.4 million in his first two seasons. He was the individual NCAA champion on the Moccasins’ 2000 national championship team. Mediate, a two-time All-American in 1983 and 1984, is bestknown for his dramatic final round and playoff battle with Tiger Woods in the 2008 U.S. Open. He teamed with noted sports author John Feinstein to write a book about the event entitled “Are You Kidding Me?” He has five PGA wins to his credit and has earned nearly $15.5 million in his career. Stiles played on the Nationwide Tour in 2010 and has earned a combined $2.8 million on the Nationwide and PGA Tours. He was a three-time All-American at Florida Southern (1993, 1994, 1995). With the induction of Dawson and Stiles in 2010, all five former Moccasins are now members of the FSC Sports Hall of Fame.
