Marc Scheff

I am an artist, art director, and curator living in Brooklyn. My art work explores the dichotomy of the inner and outer self. By engaging that within that we find ugly, we can find true and authentic beauty. Beyond the visual experience, there is an emotional evolution, and acceptance, that takes place through the act of creation.

“Pursuit of Dreams comes from my imagination, which is the balance between nature and abnormal state. Animals in Pursuit of Dreams may not be lifelike for I wish to inject different spiritualities and spirits of the east and remind people to focus and admire on other individuals who are the same or even more beautiful besides themselves only. Pursuit of Dreamsark is the work I was inspired in the moment of 2012 when people were concerning on how to be saved and I make ark to save not only rivers and mountains of human. In the space of impermanent compounds, what we pursue may not exist really and we can only feel the value and force of life when the doom is set. Just as the big fish that I compare to ark, it carries

mountains and rivers with life and observes the world with the soul. Leaving individuals behind is painful, but it allows us to reduce confusion; to find true self is difficult, but it gives us the happiness of one in a million. When it comes to styles of animals in Pursuit of Dreams, I am exploring and pursuing to the flash in the pan that shows the same of classical paintings and the force that never makes two bites of a cherry all the time on the basis of sculptures. On colors, eastern classical art also gives me inspiration. I like deep and pure Chinese flowers and bright and cool verdigris with rich colors and full of profoundness and uniqueness, which are spreading intensive natural breaths and secrecies.

Pia Hasselberg

I grew up in Dalarna, Sweden, but has since i was 20 years old lived in the Gothenburg area. I love summer in Gothenburg, but in winter I’d gladly be up in the north and have fun in the snow. I have been drawing since I was little (doesn’t everybody say that?). My older sister taught me to draw sperm on everything from flyers to self-made books. Maybe that was where I realized the magic of drawing? It was only in my early teens that I realized that drawing could be more than that, and began to draw the first pictures of anything that may resemble what I do today. I gathered quotes from song lyrics from groups Evanecence, Nightwish and Mew. In high school I went to a school specialized in art , and shortly thereafter I moved down to Öland to continue these studies. I loved the year on Öland, I learned an incredible amount about my own creating, and also about myself as a person. However, the year on Öland was not just good. It was also where I hit the wall and stoped drawing. In addition to studying full time at Öland I studied a distance course in illustration at Berghs School of Communication. An I also freelanced as an illustrator for various magazines. When I hit the wall, it meant that I could not draw on several years. It was only when I got an instagram account in the summer of 2013. The feeling when I got my first ten likes was really great! Thanks to the nice comments and encouragement from those who followed me it gave me new strength and inspiration to create images. Now I have more than 5000 followers that every day brightens my life. Thank you for being there, without you I would be left in the fog!

Danny van Ryswyk

Danny van Ryswyk works digitally, producing prints and 3D sculptures of moody and contemplative characters, often with dark themes and settings. Sometimes encased in bell-jars, they’ve a Victorian feel of scientific specimens from another era. Painstakingly painted in tiny details they can be surrounded by scenic tableaus, and/or holding stage-like props. Danny’s sculpts capture the past and can echo a brave new world - in an impressively beautiful and hypnotic way. dannyvanryswyk.com

Meredith Woolnough Meredith Woolnough’s elegant embroidered traceries capture the delicate beauty of nature in knotted embroidery threads. Through a delicate system of tiny stitches she creates intricate and complex openwork compositions that are then carefully pinned in shadowboxes, just like preserved specimens. The work maps the frameworks of the various veining systems found in nature to create work that explores the balance, harmony and connectivity of life on Earth. Inspired by the patterns, structures and shapes found in plants, coral, cells and shells Meredith’s embroideries represent both the robust beauty and elegant fragility of life. Meredith is an internationally acclaimed, award winning artist from Newcastle, Australia. Her work is held in public, private and corporate collections worldwide.

Sarah K.

Benning

Sarah K. Benning is an American fiber artist currently living in Menorca, Spain. Originally from Baltimore, she attended the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and received her BFA in Fiber and Material Studies. Shortly after graduating in 2013, Sarah discovered her love for embroidery, a relaxing hobby she could enjoy while working as a fulltime nanny. The hobby quickly turned into a job, and now Sarah works from her sunny apartment in Menorca. Though Sarah’s formal training and background are in the fine arts, she is self-taught in the art of embroidery. She approaches each piece as an illustration rather than a textile, often abandoning traditional stitches and techniques in favor of bold shapes, playful patterns, and contemporary subject matter. Her emphasis on drawing, composition, and color choice keeps her work fresh and vibrant. Sarah’s embroideries often depict potted plants and her newest works position these potted gardens in interior spaces and pairs them with other textiles. She approaches these pieces as illustrations, creating drawings in pencil directly onto the fabric before filling the image in with thread. In this way, the thread become more like ink or paint than traditional embroidery, which accentuates the bold shapes, patterns, and color in the compositions. These works are inspired by Sarah’s own potted plant collection and a general appreciation for nature. Other subject matter in the past has included crystals and mineral formations, tranquil seascapes, and lunar phases.

She is the recipient of several grants including the Clarence John Laughlin award and NYFA. Her new monograph, Surf Site Tin Type was published by Damiani Editore in March 2015. Surfland is an on-going series of contemporary tintype portraits of

surfers. The photographs are a unique blending of subject matter and photographic technique. I work with large-format cameras and the historic wet-plate collodion process that must be prepared and developed on location. The raw quality and immediacy of collodion suits my subject matter, giving it a distinctive appearance and echoing important traditions of nineteenth-century anthropological photography. My project involves an aspect of performance, as I work in the public eye. I explore the juncture between land and sea with subject matter in a constant state of transition. Surfers are an integral part of this liminal state. I am fascinated by the physical and poetic way that they inhabit America’s watery landscapes. The photographs in this series were shot in Australia, England, France and on both coasts of the United States: Montauk’s Ditch Plains on the East Coast as well as Malibu, Del Mar and Rincon beaches in California. Surfland is a chronicle and celebration of the fascinating denizens of regional surf spots across the globe.
