Founding principles of Greek Life

4

Scholarship Academic excellence is a tradition and priority for the FSU Greek community. Through a series of programs and workshops and the creation of scholarship chair positions within our governing bodies, we assist members to excel as students, and are providing workshops, training and seminars on topics such as time management and study skills.

Leadership Greek Life offers its members endless leadership opportunities and the chance to serve as officers within their individual chapters and as executive members of the governing bodies. Together with Student Activities, we sponsor and participate in a variety of leadership programs, workshops and social events.

Service Each year, members of the Greek community contribute hours and money to local and national charities. We take part in a wide variety of philanthropic events and encourage the campus and local communities to participate.

Greeks help freshmen move into residence halls.

To be eligible to join a Greek organization, students must meet the following requirements:

STEP 1 Be a current student at FSU and have successfully completed a minimum of 12 credit hours as a full-time student at FSU or another accredited college or university during the previous semester.

First semester freshman may not join a Greek organization.

STEP 2 Have a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher. In addition, some organizations have additional academic requirements. Pleasecheck with the organization of interest.

STEP 3 Be a ready for a lifetime of leadership, service, connections and fun in and outside of Frostburg State University.

The Interfraternity Council (IFC) is the governing body composed of campus chapters of national/ international fraternities that are also members of the North-American Interfraternity Conference (NIC). The ideals of the IFC are to foster and promote the interests of the member organizations and the University, to discuss concerns of mutual interest and to develop cooperation among the member organizations.

National Panhellenic Conference is the governing body composed of campus chapters of women’s fraternities whose national/ international bodies are members of the National Panhellenic Conference (NPC). Each of the members is autonomous as a social, Greek-letter society of college women. The ideals of NPC are to foster interfraternity relationships, to assist member chapters and to cooperate with the University in maintaining the highest scholastic and social standards.

National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC) is the governing body for all historically AfricanAmerican national fraternities/ sororities, whose national/ international bodies are members of the NPHC. The purposes of the Pan-Hellenic Council are to promote the uniqueness of each member organization, and to foster cooperation among the member groups.

The Student Activities Program at FSU creates a co-curricular environment that also complements the academic program through the development of leadership skills and the exposure to and participation in social, cultural, recreational and governance programs.

The mission of Greek Life is to foster an environment that promotes healthy and safe undergraduate experiences through diversity and student growth. It serves to promote the progression and advancement of fraternity and sorority life through leadership, friendship, community service and scholarship by living in accordance with each organization’s creed and principles.

University Programming Council 15-16

UPC programs events for campus The University Programming Council is a programming organization whose mission is to sponsor, collaborate and implement social, educational, recreational, and multicultural programs and activities for Frostburg State University. Under the direction of the Office of Student Activities and Greek Life, the UPC leadership team works with a committee of general board members to develop and implement events that are representative of the diverse interests of the students and other members of the Frostburg State University community.

The student leaders and members of the general board focus on programming areas including, but not limited to, speakers, music, multicultural events, comedy, feature films and off-campus trips. In addition, UPC staff and members are responsible for the planning and coordination of campus-wide traditions, including Spring Fest and Late@Lane.

Late@Lane is a free monthly event series for FSU students happening from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. in the Lane University Center.

We have DJs, comedians, free food, prizes, giveaways, and so much more for each event! As a student, you can also get involved in volunteering for Late at Lane. Students learn event management skills, marketing techniques, and how to work with professional artists and vendors.

Getting involved

with one of Frostburg State’s organizations can be as simple as stopping by a meeting or an event. All students are encouraged to get involved on campus in some way. To meet representatives from these organizations, attend the Student Org Fair at the beginning of each semester.

If you do not see an organization that meets your interests, consider starting a new group.

The Moscow Festival Ballet

The Hot Sardines CES at Frostburg State University provides an annual series of high-caliber programs with performing artists from all over the world. FSU students and surrounding community members need not travel to distant cities to attend outstanding arts events.

Kennedy Center, Lincoln Center and Carnegie Hall. Past guests include world-class artists like Esperanza Spalding, Red Baraat, The Roots, The Hot Sardines, the Martha Graham Dance Company, and Broadway stars like Anthony Rapp, Adam Pascal and Craig Schulman.

Each season offers a wide array of performances in music, dance and theatre genres from

such international performers as Moscow Festival Ballet, Bayanihan Philippine National Dance Company, Vienna Choir Boys and Indian Ink Theatre Company. Employment opportunities CES is proud to offer employment and intern opportunities for Frostburg State University students.

The CES student production team works behind the scenes and plays an integral role in bringing each event to life. Production team workers are stimulated by the challenging tasks and responsibility of CES’ high-energy work environment. Educational outreach Attendance at superior arts events is not the only opportunity CES offers to students. The CES Educational Outreach program presents a thorough series of hands-on workshops, lectures, master classes and other experiential events. These outreach programs invite students to become active and educated participants in the arts.

4 Ways to PURCHASE TICKETS Season events are on sale beginning in late August each year. Student tickets are free or discounted for all CES performances with FSU student ID. Advance ticket purchases may be made.

Payment may be made by all major credit cards, authorized bank card, money order, personal check, and cash. Based on availability, tickets may also be purchased one hour prior to curtain time at the venue box office. All patrons, regardless of age, must have a ticket. All ticket sales are final — no refunds, no exchanges. Tickets for FSU students, faculty and staff are available at a discounted price with a valid FSU ID.

Serving campus and community The Office of Civic Engagement fosters active citizenship by offering a range of activities and programs that develop personal and social responsibility within the members of our University community by addressing societal needs and social justice issues through service and democratic engagement. Through national service, volunteerism and service-learning opportunities, we are able to expand the ability of volunteers to address ongoing and emerging local and global problems, such as poverty, hunger, community building, education and environmental conservation. Best Buddies Program

Colleges Against Cancer

Best Buddies pairs people with intellectual disabilities in one-on-one friendships with college students. “Without friends and family, we are alone.” By becoming a college buddy, you will not only befriend someone with a developmental disability, but you will also learn about yourself in the process.

Colleges Against Cancer (CAC) is a nationwide collaboration of college students, faculty and staff dedicated to eliminating cancer by working to implement the programs and mission of the American Cancer Society. With hundreds of chapters nationwide, CAC is showing the world that young people care and want to make a difference.

The Anti-Bullying Club The Anti-Bullying Club believes that everyone deserves a safe, healthy setting for personal and professional growth. Whether it’s a child in a classroom or a worker in his or her office, everyone should expect a secure environment, free from emotional torment.

We believe that individuals can contribute to creating these safe social climates in the home, in the school, throughout their communities and within the workplace.

Funded in part by the Corporation for National & Community Service and the Governor’s Office on Service and Volunteerism

The A STAR! in Western Maryland AmeriCorps program has served the four westernmost counties in Maryland since 1994, providing direct services focusing on Education and Healthy Futures. AmeriCorps members commit to one year of National Service impacting the communities served.

A STAR!’s mission is to foster a network of local non profits, collaborate to provide identified direct service within the region to address education and health, – serving Garrett, Allegany, Washington and Frederick counties. For more information, contact lclark@frostburg.edu or 301.697.3359.

In one program year A STAR! in Western Maryland placed 160 AmeriCorps members in direct service opportunities in the four westernmost counties in Maryland.

AmeriCorps members mentor youth

• Over 11,525 books and emergency supplies were distributed to community partners as part of the Read to Succeed Program.

• 9,325 pounds of paper was recycled.

• 2,221 K-12 students participated in programming supported

by AmeriCorps members reporting an increase in science literacy.

• Clients receiving information and referral for health care programs = • 1,459 lunches were provided 1,369 during the summer lunch box program in Frostburg.

• Clients receiving emergency food assistance = 8,367 • AmeriCorps members contributed 45,000 hours of direct service.

• Number of food bags distributed = 41,351 • 139 K-12 students participated in healthy • New clients served = 2,793 living outreach supported

by AmeriCorps members.

• Number of clients receiving shelter services = 105

ECHOSTARS and RisingSTARS

The ECHOSTARS/RisingSTARS AmeriCorps Program is a livinglearning-serving experience for students committed to making a change in their communities.

ECHOSTARS are a part of a growing student service movement. Members participate in learning communities, academic enrichment programs, community outreach, environmental stewardship and other identified community initiatives. Members who successfully complete 300 hours of service will receive an Segal Education Award of $1,212 with the potential to earn a $500 credit if hours are completed during academic year.

A Learning Community

A Serving Community

The ECHOSTARS attend many of the same classes together, such as Psychology and Freshmen Orientation, as part of their learning community.

Even if students follow another learning community path because of their major, they can still participate in the ECHOSTARS program.

Many ECHOSTARS major in education and social work, and their service offers them the necessary experience to excel in their field of study. ECHOSTARS excel academically; over 20 percent of ECHOSTARS make the Dean’s List (3.4 or higher).

The ECHOSTARS/RisingSTARS are students who are committed to making a change in their community in a variety of ways.

Each week, they assist with after-school programs at local elementary schools as well as the YMCA and the Salvation Army.

As part of our service program, the ECHOSTARS/RisingSTARS receive transportation to all of the service sites and special projects. In addition, they assist with academic enrichment through the Read to Succeed program, offered at Frostburg State University to local children. The ECHOSTARS/ RisingSTARS provide the academic and social mentoring that these students need to succeed at school and in their personal lives. They not only grow in their understanding of their school subjects, but they also learn about healthy lifestyles, recreation and friendships. As part of a growing student service movement, the ECHOSTARS/RisingSTARS serve more than 15,000 hours each year, providing a valuable resource to the local community.

A Living Community Each year 70 freshmen and 15 team leaders and Rising STARS serve as ECHOSTARS. This living community resides exclusively in Gray and Diehl Hall, modern and wellappointed housing options.

Even the resident assistants are former ECHOSTARS, so that individuals who are committed to serving others surround incoming freshmen. Together, the ECHOSTARS socialize and encourage one another in their college experience.

Election Night Coverage

The office of Civic Engagement has partnered with the J. Glenn Beall Jr. Institute for Public Affairs, the Political Science Department, and the Student government Association to host a series of town hall meetings each semester that bring students together for meaningful conversations about their local, state, and national governments. These conversations range in topics from how the economy affects our students and higher education, to issues regarding foreign policy. These programs are focused on educating students on the democratic process and how they can get involved to make a difference.

On November 8th, 2016 the Office of Civic Engagement in partnership with the J. Glenn Beall Jr. Institute of Public Affairs will host an election Night Coverage event in the Lane University Center Alice R. Manicur Assembly Hall for the 2016 Presidential Election.

The event will include a mock ballots, food, and activities focused on the election.

Sponsor-A-Family Thanksgiving Baskets Oxfam Hunger Banquet Ten days before Thanksgiving, students will host a Hunger Banquet. Attendees’“fate” is drawn at the door — high-income, middle-income or low-income. The meals served will reflect your income level. Be part of this nationwide, campus activity to discuss the issue of hunger in our world. For more information, contact the Office of Civic Engagement at 301.687.4210.

Through the annual Sponsor-A-Family, academic and administrative departments, student groups or individuals can help make a difference in a family’s life in Western Maryland by providing a Thanksgiving food basket to a family in need. Since its beginning, the Sponsor-A-Family has provided Thanksgiving baskets for over 250 families in Western Maryland. If you or your group is interested in sponsoring a family for the Thanksgiving holiday or just making a donation, drop off your non-perishable food items at the Office of Civic Engagement. All baskets will be delivered on the Monday and Tuesday before Thanksgiving.

Making Strides Against Breast Cancer of Western Maryland Making Strides is a 5K walk held in Cumberland, Md, during October.

This event is an opportunity to unite community members, build awareness and raise funds to fight cancer.

Martin Luther King, Jr Day of Service Garrett, Allegany, Washington and Frederick counties A STAR! in Western Maryland celebrates Martin Luther King, Jr. Day with a Day of Service – Make it a day on, not a day off.

Special Olympics Maryland Winter Games Be part of this nationally recognized winter sporting event for people with disabilities held in Western Maryland. Service opportunities include helping athletes, the Parade of Athletes and being timers and scorekeepers.

Deep Creek Dunk & Hooley Plunge Take a plunge into the icy waters of Deep Creek Lake in February and Lake Habeeb at Rocky Gap in March to support Special Olympics and other programs for individuals with developmental disabilities.

Relay for Life Toys for Happiness Drive Toys for Happiness collects unwrapped children’s toys to give to less fortunate children in the area. Each year, toys are accepted at the Braddock House, the Lane University Center and the Compton Science Center for approximately two weeks, then displayed at the President’s Holiday Reception for everyone to see prior to the delivery of the toys. The annual Relay for Life, sponsored by the American Cancer Society, raises money to fund cancer research, cancer awareness and survivor support programs. Teams of participants raise money and walk around the track at FSU from 6 p.m. until 6 a.m. to show their support for those who are fighting the disease 24 hours a day. The event also includes music, live performances, games, prizes and a chance to camp out under the stars. If you want to get involved in Relay for Life at FSU, call 301.687.4210.

Frostburg’s Annual Beautify the ’Burg Alternative Break Trips FSU Alternative Break is committed to organizing off-campus service trips for students. Beautify the ‘Burg is an annual event that brings students, faculty, staff and community members together to clean up Frostburg.

Lane University Center serves as campus hub The Lane University Center (LUC) is the hub of campus life at Frostburg State University.

It is the mission of the Lane University Center to provide quality customer service and state-of-the-art event and meeting spaces to the students, staff and faculty of Frostburg State University as well as the local community. ROOM AND EQUIPMENT RESERVATIONS Rooms on campus are reserved at no cost to official University groups and registered student organizations through the online reservation system at http://involvement. frostburg.edu/sci/lane-university-center/. Student organizations may meet in most campus facilities.

Organizations are encouraged to schedule an event well in advance so that an appropriate space may be reserved. The Lane University Center Reservations Office will advise organizations which rooms are available for use, help make arrangements for room setups and most audiovisual equipment. While there is no charge for routine room setups and basic audiovisual equipment, special requests are subject to a nominal charge.

Requests for technology/equipment in other campus buildings should be requisitioned directly from the Center for Instructional Technologies and set up must be requisitioned through the Physical Plant.

• Over 7,500 people attended performances and arts events in 2015-16.

• Twenty artist engagements were produced; these engagements involved 38 total events and 22 public performances.

• Attendance at 17 educational outreach events was over 3,000; attendees included local community members, school children and FSU students.

• 11 volunteers served 130 hours for CES. FSU students worked nearly 2,000 hours to produce CES events. CES students supported Late@ Lane by providing artist and staff hospitality needs.

Civic Engagement • The Governor’s Office on Service and Volunteerism has recognized and funded the ASTAR! Program as a Program of Excellence throughout Maryland, 2007-2015.

• Frostburg State University has been selected to participate in a national initiative on civic learning and democratic engagement, one of 73 colleges and universities nationwide designated as a Lead Institution by NASPA – Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education, the leading voice for the student affairs profession.

• During the 2014-2015 year the 98 ECHOSTARS and RisingSTARS completed over 25,000 of community service.

• ASTAR! in Western Maryland AmeriCorps Program received three-year funding totalling $2.5 million.

• Frostburg State University was again named to the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll for 2014.

• The Office of Civic Engagement completed its largest Alternative Break Program, sending 40 students, staff and AmeriCorps members to New Jersey over Spring Break.

• Last year student organizations, FSU athletic teams, FSU departments and community members donated over 85 Thanksgiving baskets to the Office of Civic Engagement to be distributed to those in need throughout the county.

Lane University Center • Provided paid experiential learning opportunities to 40 students during the academic year. The Lane University Center student staff logged over 16,000 hours supporting our campus community and student life • The Lane University Center hosted 2,494 events during the 2015-16 academic year.

• On average, 2,800 patrons visited the Lane University Center a day during the 2015-16 academic year. 12,016 students visited the game room during the fall semester and 15,572 students visited the game room in the spring semester.

Marketing and Design • Photographer Brandon Holmes was voted Homecoming King, Greek Man, and received the Pillar of the Community Leadership Award.

• The Social Marketing Team video team produced a 3.5 minute video entitled “Ready, Set, Go!” for Preview FSU. • Social Marketing Team published 26 editions of the electronic newsletter SpotlightOnline and captured over 26,000 photos at 93 events during the 2015-16 academic year.

Student Activities and Greek Life

• Late@Lane entertained 25 percent of the campus community one weekend per month during the fall and spring semesters.

• University Programming Council collaborates with student organizations to provide food, music, novelties and fun in the sun at the annual Spring Fest which had an attendance of approximately 1,500 campus community members.

• Every year, the University Programming Council hosts approximately 80 programs for FSU students and the University Community; Greek Life hosts over 120 social and educational programs.

• 523 total Greek members in over 20 organizations served an average or four hours of community service per person and five hours towards a philanthropic cause and hosted over 40 programs this year for the FSU community. Greeks fund raised $10, 000 for Relay for Life .

• Over 75 student organizations participated in the Student Organizations and Advisor Resources (SOAR) series in 2014-15.

Students with a valid driver’s license and no points on their record are eligible to become state certified van drivers for programs on campus. Pay is minimum wage.

The following programs are currently hiring Van Drivers: ECHOSTARS Van drivers are needed throughout the week and on weekends to drive volunteers to their service sites.
