Marquita Thomas: LGBT Activist Extraordinaire By Michelle McCarthy Marquita Thomas redefines the word ‘involved.’ If there’s an LGBT cause, chances are she’s spent time working for it. And if she notices a need within the community that isn’t being met, she takes it upon herself to create a resource to serve it. Currently the executive director of the Los Angeles Gay & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce, Thomas spoke with us about the myriad programs and events in which she’s participated. Why did you think it was important to join the LAGLCC? I wanted to be a part of increasing the economic strength of the LGBT business community. I have a background in event planning and community building and felt my skills could be beneficial in furthering the strategic plan of the organization. What made you take the next step and become the executive director? The LAGLCC board was proactive in creating the staff role of executive director and felt that based on my two years as president of the organization, I would be the ideal person to serve in that capacity. What are you striving to accomplish with the LAGLCC? The LAGLCC is looking to grow LGBT businesses and assist allied businesses in aligning with the LGBT business community. We also want to help our members align with professionals who share their values of equality, and provide them with the tools and resources needed to grow their businesses. What other charity work have you been involved with? Various pride organizations, the Lesbian Visibility Committee for the city of West Hollywood, United Lesbians of African Heritage, Black Lesbians United, the Council of Chambers and Business Organizations, the Western

Business Alliance, and I am a member of the L.A. Gay & Lesbian Center's L.A. Women's Network. I served on a fundraising effort for Astraea, and I have consulted for LGBT organizations around the country. I created an organization for women, Out & About, which resulted in my receiving a KCET LGBT Local Hero Award in 2010. Tell us about Out & About. Out & About is a social, networking and activist organization for bisexual and lesbian women of color. When I came out, I felt there were not enough community-building resources for women of color, so I created that space. Out & About has hosted networking mixers, dance parties, panel discussions, fundraisers, picnics, has been an online resource for tens of thousands of women around the country and has produced an award-winning music festival. Why is LGBT activism so important to you? A society cannot move forward if anyone in it is left behind. When a group of people is concerned about their rights, freedoms, how to protect their families and, in some cases, whether they'll be harmed or killed because of who they are, we all must work to combat that. How does the Serafemme Music Fest benefit the community? Serafemme is currently on hiatus; the city of West Hollywood had been a major sponsor of the event and unfortunately has not been able to support the festival at the same level it once did. But the hope is that will change soon. It was an amazing display of culture and diversity, and women from around the country came to perform and participate. At the 2008 festival, nearly 1,000 women came together to enjoy the artists and vendors. The women particularly enjoyed having a women-centered
event in the middle of West Hollywood at West Hollywood Park. In 2008, I received the L.A.C.E. Award from the L.A. Gay & Lesbian Center for producing Serafemme, and in 2009 Serafemme received the Pat Parker Award from Christopher Street West. What is your role in the Ebony Pyramid Black Gay Cruise? I was on staff with the Ebony Pyramid cruise for a number of years. I assisted in marketing the event to women in my region, and I created programming for participants while on the cruise. What’s your favorite aspect of being involved with the Dyke March? I love the energy and community of the L.A. Dyke March. For two years, I was a Dyke March speaker, and once I emceed the event. Since then, the format has changed, but it continues to be a highly anticipated event because it is a rare and beautiful display of pride as shown by—and to— women. It celebrates pioneers—past and present—and is a much-needed community-building platform.

Will a Current NFL Player Come Out Soon? Perhaps one of the last vestiges of stereotypical anti-gay discrimination is in the locker room. But with the very visible public support from straight athletes—including 42 athletes and sports figures who filed an amicus brief with the Supreme Court to overturn Prop. 8—attitudes are rapidly changing. Recently, CBS Sports reported a rumor that a current NFL player may soon come out. “We want to let this NFL player—or any closeted gay player—know that you have backup. Your community, whether it is your teammates or your fan base, is here to support you,” said Hudson Taylor, founder and executive director of Athlete Ally, according to Huffington Post/Gay Voices. “[E]ncouraging fans to stand up for inclusion in sports is fundamental to Athlete Ally's mission and inextricably bound to moments like this,” said NFL linebacker Scott Fujita, another Athlete Ally who played with the Cleveland Browns.
Arizona Advances Anti-Trans Bathroom Bill On March 27, the Arizona Appropriations Committee voted 7-4 to send what National Center for Transgender Equality Executive Director Mara Keisling calls “the unnecessary and discriminatory bathroom bill, SB1045” to the full House for a vote. The bill would render local LGBT nondiscrimination laws unenforceable and would protect businesses and others who dis-
criminate against transgender and gender- nonconforming people who use public restrooms. "SB1045 is an unnecessary bill, disconnected from the reality facing transgender Arizonans. Over half of transgender Arizonans have faced harassment or discrimination in places of public accommodations. And stripping local governments of the ability

to end this violence against us is a dangerous abuse of the capitol's authority," Keisling said in a press release. The bill’s author, Rep. John Kavanagh, failed to pass an earlier “papers please” bathroom bill that would have criminalized people for using a restroom that did not match their birth certificate.
On March 26, the Los Angeles City Clerk certified the March 5 election results. Voter turnout was gruesome—of the 2,237,678 eligible voters, there were 411,212 total ballots cast for the city, as well as school board and community college races. The top vote-getter in the race for mayor was Councilmember Eric Garcetti with 121,930 votes, or 33.14 percent, to Controller Wendy Greuel’s 106,748 votes, or 29.01 percent. Openly gay Republican radio talk show host Kevin James came in third with 60.154 votes, or 16.34 percent, while Councilmember Jan Perry earned 58,472 votes, or 15.89 percent. James has not yet endorsed anyone, but former L.A. Mayor Richard Riordan, who backed James, now backs Greuel. Perry, meanwhile, came out for Garcetti, and with the African-American vote at stake, Greuel announced an endorsement from Magic Johnson. She also has the backing of L.A. County Supervisor Mark Ridley Thomas and former President Bill Clinton. Garcetti has the backing of former mayoral rival Emanuel Pleitez and former Vermont Gov. Howard Dean. Is Anything Less Than An ‘Equal Protection’ Ruling on Prop. 8 Acceptable? By Karen Ocamb Since May 2009, prominent straight attorneys Ted Olson and David Boies have been talking about the day their federal constitutional challenge to Prop. 8 would reach the Supreme Court. They had that day on Tuesday, March 26, a day they started off with an oped in the Wall Street Journal. “For one to say that the Supreme Court should leave the question of marriage equality to the political processes of the states is to say that states should remain free to discriminate— to impose this pain and humiliation on gay men and lesbians and their children—for as long as they wish, without justification,” they wrote. “The Constitution forbids such an indecent result. It did not tolerate it in separate schools and drinking fountains, it did not tolerate it with respect to bans on interracial marriage and it does not tolerate it here.” Despite cautionary warnings, expectations were exceedingly high. Thousands of demonstrators from both sides rallied in front of the Supreme Court, waving signs, arguing with each other, certain that their side would win the day. “Powerful arguments for equality and justice filled the chamber in our nation’s highest court today—and it was thrilling,” wrote Lambda Legal’s Legal Director Jon Davidson on the organization’s blog. “The attorneys made it clear that Proposition 8 has visited profound harms on same-sex couples in California and must be struck down. The justices were very engaged with almost all asking searching questions. Quite significantly, the lawyer for the proponents of Prop. 8 made [what was] potentially a very damaging admission when he stated in response to a question from Justice Sonia Sotomayor that he could not think of any justification for treating same-sex couples differently for any circumstance outside of marriage, which argues for the heightened scrutiny standard.” But others were offended by some of the questions from the justices. Robin Tyler, the L.A. activist who filed the first marriage lawsuit against California in 2004, emerged from the Supreme Court hearing angry. “[The justices] called [the 18,000 samesex married couples] an ‘experiment’ in the Supreme Court. We’re not an experiment. We’re a civil rights movement, and we deserve civil rights,” Tyler said. “I felt like I was sitting in 26

some Medieval court. I was counting how many Catholic justices there were. ... I’m angry. I felt like a second-class citizen. I felt that some of the questions by the justices were degrading. How dare they sit in front of a room of such accomplished LGBT people and refer to us like this was all something new! ... Some of their questions were demeaning and insulting to the audience—and the court was filled with people they were talking about! I just hope they do the right thing.” The Williams Institute held a conference call with six experts to “fact-check” some of the erroneous information produced at the hearing. Specifically, they countered some of Justice Scalia’s inaccuracies, such as, “If you redefine marriage to include same-sex couples, you must— you must permit adoption by same-sex couples, and there's—there's considerable disagreement among—among sociologists as to what the consequences of raising a child in a—in a single-sex family, whether that is harmful to the child or not. Some states do not—do not permit adoption by same-sex couples for that reason.” Not true. Dr. Nanette Gartrell, the Principal Researcher for the U.S. National Longitudinal Lesbian Family, said her study has been going on for 30 years, and they find that children of lesbian parents “do as well as” children of heterosexual parents and enjoy a good quality of life and are “proud” of their moms, who they think
should be allowed to marry. Of perhaps greatest concern to some court watchers is the prospect of the court deciding to dismiss the case and let the narrow 9th Circuit Court ruling stand, without ruling on the equal protection argument. “It is important that the highest court in the land declare that treating two groups of people differently on the basis of their sexual orientation is simply not going to cut it. [That] we read the Constitution and understand that we have to be dedicated to equal rights for all people, regardless of their orientation,” California Attorney General Kamala Harris told MSNBC’s Andrea Mitchell. “I don’t think we can allow such a conversation as ‘a small step toward equality.’ We either step toward equality or we don’t. And that’s just the bottom line here. ... There’s no time to wait. We can’t tell people to wait for their civil rights and their equal rights.” No one knows how the court will rule. But given the extremely high expectations, it will be interesting to see how California gays respond to the ruling if it falls short of a clear statement that same-sex couples deserve equal protection under the law, even if same-sex couples are allowed to marry again. Will the ruling feel cheap, a “small step” towards full equality when the majority of Americans think LGBT people deserve full equality? In what regard will LGBT people hold the Supreme Court then?

U.S. Supreme Court Hears Prop. 8, DOMA Cases Story by Peter DelVecchio Photos by GLAAD Public support for the rights of LGBT people, including marriage equality, is burgeoning at a rate previously unseen in the politics of civil rights in this country. A new Washington PostABC News poll puts support for same-sex marriage at an all-time high of 58 percent, with only 36 percent opposed. And the future seems bright—81 percent of under-30s favor marriage equality. Even among Americans 65 and older, 44 percent would permit gays to wed, another new record. As recently as 2006, these numbers were exactly flipped, with 58 percent opposition and 36 percent support, NPR reports. It seems that every day, more politicians and elected officials, primarily but not exclusively Democrats, come out for marriage equality. For example, Sen. Rob Portman, ROhio, announced his support for same-sex marriage March 15, citing the fact that he has a gay son, and more than 100 prominent Republicans signed onto a brief asking the U.S. Supreme Court to strike down California’s Proposition 8. That court heard oral arguments in two cases that will test how high up the ramparts of American constitutional jurisdiction this tide will rise. The Prop. 8 suit was argued on March

26, and a challenge to certain provisions of the Defense of Marriage Act, DOMA, was heard on March 27. The Prop. 8 case is an appeal from a decision of the 9th Circuit Appeals Cour upholding a ruling by the U.S. District Court in San Francisco holding Prop. 8 unconstitutional under the federal constitution. There are at least four options before the court for resolving this case. First, the court could decide that the suit is not properly before it at all on the ground that Prop. 8 proponents lack legal "standing." Standing refers to a party's right to pursue a matter in court, and usually requires some sort of specific interest in the outcome beyond simply wanting a particular result. This issue is critical here, because the state of California and two county clerks refused to defend Prop. 8 in the District Court; then newly elected Democratic Gov. Jerry Brown and
Attorney General Kamala Harris refused to assert an appeal, leaving Prop. 8’s sponsors to do so. The 9th Circuit held that the proponents did have standing after putting the question to the California Supreme Court, which advised that it would grant the Prop. 8 proponents standing if the case was in state court. Federal standing under Article III of the U.S. Constitution, however, is a different animal from standing in a state court. In 1997, the U.S. Supreme Court stated in Arizonans for Official English v. Arizona that there were “grave doubts” regarding whether the sponsors of a successful ballot measure that essentially designated English as the official language of the Arizona government had standing to defend the measure, noting that the court had never held that initiative proponents may properly defend their initiatives on appeal.

U.S. Supreme Court Hears Prop. 8, DOMA Cases Court watchers view a lack-of-standing outcome as a real possibility because of the Supreme Court's prior decisions, as it would provide the court with an "off ramp," permitting it to avoid the more controversial substantive issues on the merits regarding equal protection, and because certain justices seemed skeptical of the proponents' standing at the hearing. Responding to a statement by the proponents' attorney, Chuck Cooper, to the effect that a state could appoint any person it wished to defend a ballot measure, Chief Justice Roberts disagreed, stating, "... a state can't authorize anyone to proceed in federal court, because that would leave the definition under Article III of the federal Constitution as to who ... has standing to bring claims up to each state. And I don't think we've ever allowed anything like that.” The more liberal justices—Justices Ginsburg, Kagan, Breyer and Sotomayor—also expressed skepticism about standing. If the court throws the case out on standing grounds, then, in theory at least, the District Court's ruling would hold, and same-sex marriage would become legal again in California. Some analysts, however, believe there might be ways for proponents to challenge this result. At the other extreme, as a second option, the court could hold either that the constitution includes a right to same-sex marriage nationwide, or, conversely, that it does not preclude states from limiting the institution to oppositesex couples. Most view it as almost certain that the three most conservative justices—Justices Scalia, Alito and Thomas—would be comfortable upholding bans on gay marriage across the board. On the other side, several of the more liberal justices questioned the fundamental ration-

ality of denying same-sex couples the right to marry. In one notable exchange, after Cooper had identified "responsible procreation" as a justification for Prop. 8, Justice Kagan asked whether, that being the case, it would be constitutional to deny marriage licenses to any couple over 55. Plainly at a loss, Cooper answered that even in such couples, the man is likely to still be fertile. "I can assure you, if both the woman and the man are over the age of 55, there are not a lot of children coming out of that marriage," Kagan responded, to great laughter in the courtroom. Justice Kennedy, who authored the landmark 2003 Lawrence v. Texas decision declaring laws prohibiting homosexual sodomy unconstitutional—who is considered the critical swing vote in the case—gave hope to each side with his
statements at the hearing. "There are some 40,000 children in California ... that live with same-sex parents," he said, addressing Cooper, "and they want their parents to have full recognition and full status. The voice of those children is important in this case, don't you think?” Kennedy added that the harm to these children could be considered “an immediate legal injury.” But at another point in the hearing, Kennedy told former George W. Bush Solicitor General Ted Olson that his gay plaintiffs were asking the court "to go into uncharted waters, and you can play with that metaphor—there's a wonderful destination, it is a cliff." Kennedy later wondered out loud whether the case "was properly granted”—in other words, whether the court should have accepted it in the first place. A third option, known as the "eight-state solution," is being advanced largely by the Obama administration in its amicus brief. The theory here is that it is unconstitutional for a state to grant essentially all the rights of marriage, but then call the relationship created by another name, for example, a civil union. None of the justices appeared to accept this argument, and some thought it would cause states to forgo introducing civil union measures because such laws would instantly result in full marriage equality. The final option for the court would be to hold that once a state grants a fundamental right, such as marriage, which the California Supreme Court did in 2008, that right cannot later be taken away by voters. This was the rationale of the 9th Circuit ruling, which seemed to be aimed directly at Justice Kennedy, who wrote the 1996 Romer v. Evans decision in which the court struck down a Colorado voter initiative that took away certain nondiscrimination

U.S. Supreme Court Hears Prop. 8, DOMA Cases rights LGBT persons had previously enjoyed. It is unclear whether the 9th Circuit's strategy of targeting Kennedy was successful. Kennedy made an ambiguous comment at the hearing to the effect that California should not be "penalized" for being generous in its protection of same-sex couples, but not going far enough. The DOMA case tests the constitutionality of the 1996 statute’s Section 3 provision, which denies certain benefits of federal law to samesex couples legally married under state law that are routinely available to opposite-sex couples. The suit is an appeal from the decision of the 2nd Circuit invalidating that part of the law. The plaintiff, Edith Windsor, had married her wife in Canada in 2007, a marriage subsequently recognized by the state of New York where they lived. The wife died, leaving everything to Windsor. Windsor then faced a federal estate tax bill of more than $300,000 that she would not have had to pay had her spouse been male. Like the Prop. 8 case, a threshold issue in the Windsor suit involves standing. Typically, when a citizen challenges a federal law, the defendant is the United States, represented by the Justice Department, an agency of the executive branch. In 2011, however, the Obama administration announced it had concluded that DOMA is unconstitutional, and, while it would still enforce the law, it would no longer defend it in court. Conservative Republicans in the U.S. House of Representatives promptly picked up the DOMA banner and formed the so-called "Bipartisan Legal Advisory Group,” BLAG, to defend the statute in court. The first hour of the Supreme Court's hearing on the DOMA case was consequently devoted to an esoteric discussion about unprecedented issues of federal standing. All of the justices who spoke seemed to acknowledge that the case's posture was extremely unusual because both the original parties—Windsor and the U.S. government, as represented by the Justice Department—were in agreement on the correctness of the 2nd Circuit's ruling, while BLAG, a creature of one house of Congress with no readily identifiable injury of its own, was the only entity before the court opposed to that ruling. If the court were to hold that BLAG lacked standing, then the 2nd Circuit’s decision would stand. With respect to the substantive merits, Paul Clement, BLAG’s attorney, began by arguing that the legal question before the court was "actually quite narrow," whether the federal government has the right to define marriage for purposes of federal law, just as the states have the right to do so under state law.

Justice Ginsburg interrupted Clement almost immediately, saying, "[T]he problem is if we are totally for the states' decision that there is a marriage between two people, for the federal government then to come in and say no joint return, no marital deduction, no Social Security benefits—your spouse is very sick but you can't get leave—one might well ask, what kind of marriage is this?" Ginsburg later pointed out just how pervasive the effect of DOMA is on gay couples. “It’s as Justice Kennedy said,” she said, “1100 statutes, and it affects every area of life,” adding that it forces states to have "two kinds of marriage— the full marriage, and then this sort of skim milk marriage." Justice Sotomayor questioned "what gives the federal government the right to be concerned at all in what the definition of marriage is.” Justice Kagan pointed out that DOMA departs from prior federal law, explaining that "historically, the only uniformity that the federal government has pursued is that it has uniformly recognized the marriages that are recognized by the state." She asked whether the fact that DOMA disrupts uniformity “sends up a pretty good red flag” that animus against gays might have been the motivation behind the law. Kagan quoted from the House Report on DOMA, which said that, in enacting the statute in 1996, "Congress decided to ... express moral disapproval of homosexuality.” Justice Kennedy, believed to be the potential pivot point on the court in this case, as in the Prop. 8 suit, expressed concern that DOMA
exceeds the bounds of federal authority and usurps state power. “[W]hen [DOMA affects] 1,100 laws, which in our society means that the federal government is intertwined with the citizens' day-today life, you are at real risk of running in conflict with what has always been thought to be the essence of the state police power, which is to regulate marriage, divorce, custody." Kennedy later questioned whether Congress could "use its powers to supersede the traditional authority and prerogative of the states to regulate marriage in all respects." Chief Justice Roberts raised the issue by implication of whether LGBT people need the assistance of the court, given what he termed a "sea change” in public attitudes towards gay rights, which he said probably "has a lot to do with the political forces and effectiveness of” the LGBT movement. "As far as I can tell," Roberts said, “political figures are falling over themselves to endorse your side of the case." LGBT activists seemed very pleased with how the DOMA argument went. "DOMA is dead,” declared National Center for Lesbian Rights Director Shannon Minter as he exited the court. “I’m very encouraged after the arguments today,” said Lambda Legal’s Jon Davidson. "I had a sense that we had five justices that were ready to rule our way. ... None of the anti-gay vehemence expressed in some prior cases surfaced in the court. Not even Justice Scalia seemed prepared to make anti-gay comments." Decisions are expected in both cases by the end of June.

Perhaps you know Willam Belli for his body of work as an actor. In addition to a lauded portrayal of transgendered Cherry Peck on Nip/Tuck, he’s played roles on shows ranging from Southland to CSI and in films like Ticked-Off Trannies with Knives. Maybe you know Willam as the first contestant ever to be disqualified from RuPaul’s Drag Race, a TV moment that left gay mouths everywhere gaping in shock and confusion. If you live in the L.A. area, it’s possible you know Willam from his hosting stints at Hamburger Mary’s Legendary Bingo or as the head of Box Meat, a booking agency for L.A.’s gay strippers. Or maybe you have no clue who Willam is, in which case you should probably get out more. One thing is for certain—Willam Belli is without a doubt one of the hardest-working queens in the business. For proof, just read on.

recently sat down with Willam at the gorgeous West Hollywood home he shares with his husband of nearly five years. (Their relationship is now going on more than a decade.) He was fresh off a gig, with a face full of makeup—a woman from the neck up and a disheveled, comfortable man from the neck down. I knew better than to chracterize Willam based on the baggy hoodie and combat boots he was sporting at the time, as his reputation as a drag queen clotheshorse precedes him. I trailed Willam to his guest room, where we could sit down and chat in a quiet, comfortable setting. On the way, we cut through his “closet,” which happens to be equivalent to most people’s bedrooms and looks like it suffered an explosion of wigs, shoes and haute couture mere seconds prior. (In my experience, explosions of the hair and wardrobe variety simply come with the drag queen territory.) After settling in, I opened up the conversation by asking what came first for him, acting or drag—something I’d been curious about, considering Willam’s wide range of TV and film work. “I would say there was always an attraction to drag. Halloween was my favorite holiday, and I was always a really, really, really good liar. With acting, my biggest successes came through drag, so I’d say drag came first.” Willam’s first paid drag gig was a “Rocky Horror Picture Show-type thing” in Central Florida when he was 13 or 14, which his parents “fully supported.” Another important moment of parental support came in the seventh grade, when Willam handed in a book report on RuPaul’s autobiography, Lettin’ It All Hang Out, only to have his teacher not accept it. “My mom had to come to school—I remember she was in her scrubs, because she was a nurse—and she’s like, ‘I’m pissed I even have to come in and talk to you about this.’ The teacher said it wasn’t appropriate subject matter, and my mom said, ‘What? He’s fucking reading! I don’t care if you don’t agree with it. There’s nothing wrong with this book.’” As must be the case with many budding drag queens, it was the act of transformation into a woman that initially took a young Willam from withdrawn to hungry for the spotlight. “I started out doing theater costume design and sewing, because I was a fat kid and I wasn’t fit for the stage—I was a little too shy. Drag helped me come out of my shell for a bit. I started doing costume design and costuming work at a local theatre, and they did a spoof of one of the shows they were doing, Jesus Christ Superstar, and they put me in drag. Everyone was like, ‘Oh, wow, you can do stuff,’ and I was like, ‘Yeah, I guess I can.’ Drag opened a lot of doors for me.”

For A Good Time, Call Willam Even back then, Willam had his drag favorites—RuPaul, Leigh Bowery, Charles Busch, Kevin Aviance, Charles Pierce. Coincidentally, it was a list of top-tier queens who never felt the need to create a name for their drag personas, a fact that Willam clearly took to heart. Asked about the decision to simply use ‘Willam’ in all his professional pursuits, including drag, he had his answer at the ready—”This is gonna piss a lot of people off. I think the best ones don’t have to change their name.” Perhaps it’s simply due to the fact that Willam in drag doesn’t use a puninspired stage name, but unlike the majority of queens working in the drag industry today, the Willam you see in a tight-fitting dress and expensive heels is not a ‘character.’ “I really don’t think there is a Willam character,” Willam says matter-offactly. “When people meet me, they’re kinda stunned. I’m not a character that’s unapproachable. I have a Gooogle Voice number that’s on my posters. It says, ‘For a good time, call Willam,’ and my number’s under it. I’m not a character, I’m a person. Sharon Needles is not a person. She’s a character. There’s a difference.” Having brought up Sharon Needles, I was now really in for it, but not for the reason you may think. Sure, the ghoulish and gothic drag character won the very season of Drag Race that Willam was so abruptly eliminated from, but it would be foolish to think Willam held a grudge. After all, it was Willam’s downright shocking disqualification that helped make him the household drag name I had sitting before me. Instead, Willam had a different bone to pick, and not just with Sharon Needles but with several of the queens from the hit reality competition series. “Selling $30 or $35 T-shirts—I think that’s shitty,” Willam proclaims. “We know how much a T-shirt costs to print. These queens are like, ‘Fans want to give you their money.’ I’m like, fuck that. That’s highway robbery. They created you. You shouldn’t be paid to be put on that pedestal. You should work to keep yourself there.” Willam pauses. “You see how my tone changed? My work ethic is strong. I come from a family of union people, you know.” He pauses. “And mobsters.” Willam then flashes me his signature devilish grin, intimating that he’s just shown me first-hand his hilarious brand of comic timing. There’s no doubt that Willam’s comic timing is what has made his still relatively new web series, Willam’s Beatdown on The Stylish, so damn popular. For the uninitiated, in each episode of the YouTube series, Willam looks at homemade videos by different ‘vloggers’—mostly makeup tutorials—and gives a full play-by-play. In addition to “helping everyone be better through the faults of others,” Willam’s aim is to make you laugh through his original brand of sick and twisted commentary. “The show is kinda like Mystery Science Theater 3000—for a more fashionable set.” Willam also compares the series to “Tosh.0, but gay—er.” While YouTube’s sponsorship of The Stylish as a channel was not renewed for the next year, Magical Elves, the channel’s parent company (responsible for some of TV’s best reality show programming), single-handedly chose Willam’s Beatdown to continue along its road of success. It’s no surprise to those familiar with Willam’s output that he’d find himself in front of a camera, critiquing fashion and doling out makeup tips. During his stint on Drag Race, you’d often find Willam dropping the names of high-end designers like heavy boulders, effortlessly donning Dolce & Gabbana and Gaultier looks to walk the runway. I, for one, was shocked to hear from Willam’s own mouth that his love of women’s fashion actually comes from a place of insecurity.

For A Good Time, Call Willam “I’m not the prettiest one at all. If you line up all the girls from Drag Race, I’d be lucky to be in the top 20 of best faces. My body’s on—I know my body’s good. And one of the reasons my body’s on is because I know my face isn’t perfect. It’s not womanly or anything like that, so I like to make sure I look on-point. That means stones in all the right places, and glitter, and everything in the right spot—including the labels.” “I like a luxe look,” Willam continues. “People say I’m slutty, but it’s more than that. I’m an expensive-looking slut. I’m not a slut off the street; I’m the mistress in the penthouse who dresses for her man, who dresses for the fantasy—all that. That’s the one part of ‘Willam’ that could be considered a character. But everybody puts on drag. My husband goes to work in a three-piece suit to his own company because he says you should—it’s work.” When I ask Willam to name off some of his favorite labels and designers—for men and women—I receive a varied list. For men: Dior Homme, Scooter LaForge, Joshua McKinley tank tops. For women: Balmain, Versace, Gaultier, Mizrahi, Kenzo for Opening Ceremony, shoes by Giuseppe Zanotti and Louboutin, “anything that can nip my waist in.” There’s no better showcase that Willam is the real deal—fashion, beauty, wit and all— than his hugely successful parody videos. Rewriting the words to pop music’s greatest hits (and then putting down an original vocal track) has practically become a pastime for queens the world over, a drag tradition that in the eyes of many sets the most talented queens apart from those who can merely ‘lipsynch for their lives.’ Willam’s parodies—including “The Vagina Song,” “Chow Down,” “Let’s Have a Kai Kai,” “Love You Like a Big Schlong” and, most recently, “Boy is a Bottom”—have proven to be prime examples of Willam’s comedic abilities. Those videos have also brought Willam worldwide acclaim, as evidenced by bookings from Australia to Germany to Rio to, of all places, the Middle East. In addition to all of the things stacked upon Willam’s proverbial plate, he has just informed me that a book is also in the works, with a great title—You’re Not Doing That Right. “You know how when you read through GQ or Allure, there are always sidebars on articles that you want to read before the big article. Think of a book filled with a lot of little side articles and tutorials on makeup— amazing things, like how to fake a good black eye for family court or classic drag looks. And I want to talk about all the little drag secrets, like how to really tuck, or what you use Goo Gone for, and why it’s a toiletry—not a kitchen product—in my house. It’s going to be a little bit of Sedaris combined with Butt magazine and some Allure.” And this isn’t the first time Willam has considered putting a book out into the publishing ether. “I wanted to do a book about strippers and my company Box Meat for years, but there was never enough content, and it was always repeating itself. ‘This one got high, I blew that one, that one done fell off her box, Faultline called and that one’s asshole was dirty.’ It got a little repetitive. ‘That one went on tour with Kylie. That one OD’d.’” At the time of me writing this story, Willam is living it up in Dubai with Vicky Vox and Detox Icunt, talented queens who appear in several of Willam’s parodies—most notably the right-wing-skewering “Chow Down (at Chick-fil-A) ”—and whom Willam refers to as his “ride-or-die bitches.” “Here’s the thing about Dubai,” Willam dictates. “Detox is going to get beheaded. I’m gonna get sold into a harem, hopefully for rubies, and Vicky is gonna get a fatwa—and yes, that is also a weight-related joke.” I ask if Willam is at all scared to fly into a Muslim country with a suitcase overflowing with women’s wear. “My burqa is knee length, so I should be fine,” he reassures me. “I don’t get scared. I think fear is a choice, and I don’t have it in my body. We have to look normal, though—that’s the rough part. I can pass as a normal boy, but Detox? It’s gonna be hats and glasses for her—that’s what we decided.” As far as his luxe trip to the Middle East goes, Willam says he has “Boy is a Bottom”— which hit 6 million views in five weeks—to thank for that. “There aren’t Chick-fil-As all over the world,” Willam notes, “but there are bottoms everywhere.” Once again, he shoots me that devilish grin. willambelli.com @willambelli

For a main, the drunken duck breast comes prepared perfectly tender and pink with crisp, fatty skin that’s just the right amount of salty, and which is served with skewers of grilled seasonal fruit (pear is on the plate now). The hinoki (cypress)-scented black cod is both delicate and substantial and comes on a bed of whipped sweet potato with pistachio, while the caramel-braised Kurobuta pork belly is a heartier, more savory option with crisp radish and bitter mustard greens as a nice counterpoint to the sweetness of the meat. Although the larger dessert choices such as chocolate-praline with malt sponge cake, milk chocolate jelly and cocoa nibs, or the matcha (toasted green tea) sponge cake and zephyr with namelaka, yuzu and arare might catch your eye, save room for one of the housemade mochis. The one made of miso with butterscotch and togarashi is a revelation of salty-sweet equilibrium. It might have taken David Myers a few years to open up another fine-dining redoubt after closing Sona, but the food at Hinoki & the Bird was worth the wait.

Escaping the usual perils of remaking a horror classic—namely, creating a perfunctory copy of the original—director/co-writer Fede Alvarez has both gore and surprises galore in store for Evil Dead fans (and virgins). This souped-up, blood-drenched update has Mia (Levy) going cold turkey in a cabin in the woods, accompanied by her estranged brother David (Fernandez), his girlfriend and two close friends. The demonic possession plot provides a nice metaphor for addiction, though gore hounds will argue the narrative is just an excuse to show some really nasty, grisly stuff. Tongues are sliced, arms are severed and Eric (Pucci) unwisely reads aloud from the Book of the Dead—though he is warned not to!—and unleashes a furious demonic hell. He becomes a human pin cushion as a result. Alvarez ratchets up the tension and keeps viewers off-guard by upending expectations both with what will happen to whom, as well as when and how. The film’s famous swamp rape is vivid and visceral—as are most of the horror sequences—but this Evil Dead resists playing by the original rules, which is why it is more effective. It’s unpleasant and intense, but that is paying Alvarez and his film a supreme compliment. —Gary M. Kramer

Which brother is “the devil” is perhaps best left for audiences to debate after seeing this absorbing film about two Egyptian siblings in London. Devilishly handsome Rashid (Floyd) is involved in a drug-dealing gang, and he tries to keep his devil-may-care younger brother, Mo (Elsayed), out of harm’s way. However, after his best friend dies in a violent encounter with members of a rival gang, Rashid decides he wants out of the drug/gang culture. He takes a job offered by photographer Sayyid (Taghmaoui), and eventually, unexpectedly, becomes romantically involved with him. My Brother the Devil intertwines familiar stories of gang war, Arab-English tradition and a queer identity into one film, but this stylish drama benefits from its authenticity and the palpable bond between the brothers. Their affection and horseplay is as believable as the tensions that divide them after Mo discovers—to his horror—that Rashid, whom he worships, is queer. While Rashid’s sexual identity issues are the weakest element in this overstuffed film, there is a nice chemistry between him and Sayyid. My Brother the Devil teeters on melodrama as the plotlines about revenge, betrayal and justice all converge, but the strong lead performance by the sexy Floyd more than compensates.
This fascinating if somewhat frustrating slow-burn character study has Simon (Corbet) heading to Paris after breaking up with his girlfriend. He is lonely and horny, and director Antonio Campos follows Simon closely—often tracking him closely from behind as he wanders around the city. The story picks up when Simon meets Victoria (Diop), a prostitute, and gets off with her. They connect again for sex, and soon circumstances prompt Simon to ask Victoria if he can stay with her “for a few days.” The couple eventually hatch a plan to film and blackmail her married clients, but things do not necessarily go as planned. Simon Killer is absorbing as viewers wait—and wait— for a payoff. While they do, there is much to admire in Corbet’s bold performance, as he excels at balancing puppy-doggish vulnerability with cold and calculating behavior—until he starts to get unhinged. Diop is also captivating in her prostitute role, even though it borders on being cliché. Simon Killer boasts some stylish visuals and a killer soundtrack as it builds to the discussion-worthy climax. Yet viewers are likely to find this thriller ultimately unsatisfying.
A trippy, dippy sci-fi drama, Vanishing Waves takes an interesting (but not original) concept—neurological transference—and does far too little with it. Lukas (Jampolskis) agrees to be locked in a sensory deprivation tank with electrodes attached to his head so he can mind-meld with the comatose Aurora (Jutaite). The team of scientists wants to monitor his physical and psychological responses, but given the erotic encounters he has with Aurora, Lukas keeps most of his experiences to himself. The scientists seem unaware of his deception, but his girlfriend Lina (Jablonskyte) sees through him, accusing Lukas of having an affair. And Lukas kind of is cheating on her with Aurora, given their sexploits. Vanishing Waves makes the dreamscape sequences visually interesting, but too much of this thinly plotted film is enervating. Lukas’ agenda to “save” Aurora is not particularly compelling, and his deceitfulness—and his dullness—make him a tough character to like. The science experiment is also murky, raising all kinds of ethical questions. Oddly, the film briefly comes to life in its final reel, particularly during a hypnotic four-minute sequence of Lukas, nude, chasing Aurora along a beach at night. If only the rest of Vanishing Waves had been so spellbinding.

Depeche Mode

Depeche Mode and I go way back. Their career started the year I started DJing clubs, and I’ve been playing (and loving them) ever since. They did, however, lose my interest with most of their forgettable late ‘90s to early ‘00s output. But they’ve progressively been finding their footing again ever since Playing the Angel, and their 13th disc finds them rejuvenated again. Themes of faith, life, death and lust have regularly inhabited Martin Gore’s lyrics via Dave Gahan’s melodramatic, vibrato vocals, and they abound. As do some of the band’s most beautiful melodies ever. Lead singles “Angel” and “Heaven” are bluesy, tormented waltzes, with Gahan leading the charge like a zealous, trip-hop grifter. Shades of the band’s electropop palette are heard on the plucky “Broken” and the spacedisco strains of “Soft Touch/Raw Nerve,” but there’s also the twangy guitar moments they excel at, such as on “Goodbye.” The most obvious resurrection of their own “Personal Jesus” is the skuffle-beated “Soothe My Soul,” for sure a highlight. The only downside is that this is more of an intimate-listen, headphones kind of record than it is a bangup club record. But these intricate, textured songs have a breathing room that ferments inside your head upon further spins. —Paul V.

On her third studio release (not including three remix and/or singles compilations) , the English soul singer Alice Russell finally finds her groove. Chances are To Dust will be your jam as well. This Suffolk girl’s been fitfully impressive since her 2005 studio debut, yet has never essayed a comprehensively satisfying release until now. So let’s throw out all the interludes first—which should be a rule for every single record for the rest of time—then focus on the actual songs herein. Russell throws down the gauntlet on the one-two punch of openers “A to Z” and “Heartbreaker Pt. 2.” The gauntlet to whom, you ask? Adele, most likely, though Russell would settle for even a sliver of Adele’s market share since Russell is still an under-the-radar item here in the States. She might finally have a chance with To Dust. This is oldschool R&B buoyed by Russell’s earthy contralto and graceful phrasing. “For a While” uses the Alicia Keys template for midtempo stompers and delivers a playful, nearly robotic twist. Highlight “Twin Peaks” starts as a ballad before settling into a mattress-shaking jam. And the quality throughout remains at A-levels, even on the bonus track. Come on, America—show this white girl some love.
Phoenix, France’s electronic answer to Spoon, has released its fifth album, Bankrupt!, and if you’re a fan of the band, you’ll like this—because it has done absolutely nothing to change the formula. That’s not necessarily a bad thing. In the current climate of pop music, if you haven’t reinvented your sound entirely, made a difficult third album using only hubcaps for instruments or had a frontman who stepped away to pursue an awkward solo career, you’re not doing it right. Phoenix’s sturdy business model has afforded it nearly 15 years of making shimmering indie pop. “Entertainment” is an obvious single, and opens the LP handily. “The Real Thing” and “SOS in Bel Air” also jumpstart the disc. The centerpiece of Bankrupt! is its title track. A seven-minute opus, it’s largely instrumental, then suddenly not. It’s a glorious song, and frankly, the album should have more of them. We know Phoenix can do pop. We know the band can do dance. But for once, it should put the pulsing drum beats aside and deliver something unique. The album as a whole is incredibly competent and pleasant. Songs will stick with you as songs should, but it’s time these guys start pushing boundaries before they get boring.

I bet you have no idea who Derek Gruen is, but you will when I tell you his stage name is Del Marquis—yes, the Scissor Sisters’ guitarist—and this is his official solo record debut (as the Sisters take their hiatus). Call the flashback police, because you’d swear Del was actually an R&B electropop star circa 1984, which makes sense, as he recorded it with members of Prince’s New Power Generation band. And I’m pleasantly surprised at his knack for turning out infectious melodies. These are fabulously served up on the breezy ‘n bouncy “Under Attack” (clearly a nod to Madonna’s “Holiday”) , “Legendary Children” and the truly wonderful “In the Quiet” (all of which feature Bright Light, Bright Light’s Rod Thomas on vocals). The vibe throughout might remind you of other white-boy soul songcrafters like Sam Sparro, Robin Thicke or Penguin Prison, especially on “Caught Up in the Rhythm” or lead single “Shame,” with its fierce gospel-minded female voices. To quote Gruen, “It’s a groove record that has content and purpose behind otherwise finger-snapping, headsnapping tunes.” Indeed. And this might sound weird, but this effort almost sounds like some crazybut-it-works funky collaboration between Chaka Khan, Phil Collins, The SOS Band and Kylie Minogue.
OK, let’s get this one out of the way—Strokes fans looking for Is This It will be disappointed to find out that this isn’t. But it is something more nuanced, mature and unique. Only two or three times does Julian Casablancas raise his voice to that signature distorted yelp. Those tracks will please the die-hards who have been following the band for 15 years, but the real achievement on Comedown Machine, the band’s fifth LP, lies within the subtle, synthy, jittery tracks that populate this album. “Tap Out” opens the disc with a catchy, simple guitar riff and features some surprisingly under-effected vocals. “All the Time” is good, but it’s Strokes-bynumbers, put at the top of this album to comfort disoriented fans. After this, however, the album really kicks into gear. “One Way Trigger” is the band’s best single, hands down. It’s Strokesmeets-A-ha, which is awesome and bizarre. “Welcome to Japan” features some of the band’s sharpest lyrics and a huge chorus. “‘80s Comedown Machine” and “50 50” also stand out. But the kicker comes with album closer “Call It Fate, Call It Karma,” where Casablancas channels Nina Simone to create one of the most un-Strokes moments ever recorded by the band. If you think you know The Strokes, you don’t. Let Comedown Machine prove it to you.
When Nicolas Fromageau cofounded M83, his vision for the electro-indie band was more drastic than his compatriot Anthony Gonzalez. M83 have gone on to great, mainstream success over their last few releases, while Fromageau has been working on a series of EPs with his new project, Team Ghost. It’s immediate from the opening track of the official debut, Rituals, that Fromageau’s group is less interested in the immediate pleasures of electro-pop and more concerned with exploring the polarities of modern indie. “Away” begins with a dreamy soundscape of synths and ethereal vocals before breaking into scabrous punk thrash. And so it goes throughout the record. Team Ghost veers wildly between harsh sonics (the powerful “Curtains”) and gorgeous, ambient works that take their cue from Brian Eno (the lush drone of closer “We Won’t Fail”). And when the band mixes those extremes up—as on the creepy “Dead Film Star” and “Blood”—it comes close to creating a genre all its own. As for content—you know, meaning— it doesn’t get more exact than the sexual ode to voyeurism in “Somebody’s Watching” or the S&M redux of “Pleasures that Hurt.” Ah, the French—still more comfortable with sex than the rest of the world.

Courtesy of her electrifying singing and acting prowess in family film classics such as The Wizard of Oz, her dramatic triumphs such as Judgment at Nuremberg and A Star is Born and her transcendent live appearances and television shows, the Garland legend never ceases to endure. She’s a mythic tragic idol to the gay community and beloved by a diverse fanbase across the globe. In the L.A. premiere of the London and Broadway ‘drama with music’ End of the Rainbow, Tony-nominated Tracie Bennett recreates her riveting and astonishingly resonant portrait of the psychologically tortured and physically addicted creative artist who never escaped the pitfalls of childhood stardom
and crippling insecurity. Bennett brilliantly captures the larger-than-life Garland—bawdy, temperamental, ruinously undisciplined, witty and hilariously selfdeprecating—as well as the emotionally stunted lost child within, longing for love and inner peace. Peter Quilter’s script—equal parts speculative and fact-inspired—imagines what went on in Garland’s suite and onstage when the performer appeared in a five-week gig at the Ritz Hotel in London, December 1968, only three months before she died of a drug overdose in a London flat. Accompanying the cash-strapped star during her engagement is her opportunistic lover, the much younger Mickey Deans (effectively played by Erik Heger) , who became her fifth husband, and a doting gay piano accompanist, Anthony (the superb Michael

Though Bennett’s small physical stature approximates Garland’s, there’s not a facial resemblance, and Bennett’s husky speaking voice—while skillfully masking her native British accent—is less a facsimile than an effective approximation. Yet this matters little. The overall physicality, distinctive attitude, charisma, trademark Garland tics, gestures and posture—and especially the star’s everpresent edginess—feel astonishingly ontarget. Bennett is also a prodigiously gifted singer—belting out Garland classics such as “Come Rain or Come Shine,” “The Man That Got Away” and—of course—“Over the Rainbow” in showstopping style, supported by Jeffrey Saver’s crackerjack musical direction. More importantly, Garland’s heart-
breaking vulnerability is evident throughout, in both the performance numbers and the hotel suite scenes. Just beyond every diva hissy-fit and childlike lack of discipline is the indelible sense of Garland’s inner turmoil and emotional fog. Alongside all of this is Bennett’s harrowing depiction of addictive behavior. Bennett would be an ideal actress to take on the role of Mary Tyrone in a revival of O’Neill’s Long Day’s Journey Into Night. Terry Johnson directs with style, energy and sharp insight. Handsome and meticulously detailed design elements add to the triumph. Yet, in the end, this is Bennett’s vehicle, and she carries it eloquently, in a blistering and deeply affecting performance that does a legend proud. —Les Spindle

It also raises moral dilemmas about our responsibilities to others. Along with the many positive influences of the ever-advancing technology are the dehumanizing and destructive influences one increasingly hears about. Jennifer Haley’s mesmerizing new play, in its world premiere run, offers a disturbing portrait of the psychological and spiritual chaos that can occur when we allow ourselves to escape into a technological sphere where deception and self-delusion can run rampant, as we shut out our perceptions of physical reality and avoid the basic modes of human interaction. Director Neel Keller, along with a superb five-member ensemble and a gifted design team, create an eerie yet uncomfortably convincing dramatic universe. The scenes are tautly staged and viscerally enthralling, while the rapt 64

attention the piece requires in spinning its surprises is well worth the effort. Beginning in a chilly interrogation room in an unspecified location, the play introduces us to a businessman, Sims (Robert Joy) , being grilled by an intimidating inspector, Morris (Jeanne Syquia) . Unspecified crimes are suggested, as Morris asks questions about a virtual reality website that Sims runs. Web technology has advanced miraculously in a society where many people escape into a technological realm, where visual and sensual experiences have become inseparable from the real world, and the possibility exists to give up one’s real-life existence to reside forever in the fantasy zone. Telling much more of the plot would be a disservice to this piece, in which a key satisfaction is the unfolding of the narrative layers to make compelling thematic points. However, it soon becomes apparent that pedophilia is a primary aim of Sims’ site. In the virtual reality scenes, we meet the upbeat and outgoing Iris

(Brighid Fleming). The young girl resides in an idyllic and ornate virtual mansion, where she entertains gentleman callers who are visitors to the site. Among them is the dapper Woodnut (Adam Haas Hunter), who copes with emotional baggage he’s trying to move past as he turns to the website for comfort. Also entering the picture is a science teacher, Doyle (Dakin Matthews), another visitor, who is being interrogated by Morris in her quest to bring charges against Sims. Exactly what agency Morris is
from is initially unclear, adding to the puzzle as to where the fantasy realm ends and reality begins. The performances are sublime and the design effort is triumphant, with special mention due for Adrian W. Jones’ astonishing revolving set, Alex Jaeger’s costumes, Christopher Kuhl’s lighting and John Zalewski’s sound. This intelligent and absorbing production is one of the year’s most rewarding offerings to date. —Les Spindle

I LOVE EVERYTHING THAT'S OLD I have been staying with my mother as she gets over some surgery. It is a trip. I drive the street I grew up on every day and pass a house that has been haunting me. A kid lived there, though I cannot remember his name. He was four or five years younger than me, cute way beyond belief. Long after graduation, I used to see him at Drake's Bookstore at 7566 Melrose. Drake’s was once a straight porn theatre called Aladdin and turned to our dark side in 1975. Drake's became a gay porn store with very active video booths in the back. The trolls went to the booths. Most of us stood on Melrose and waited for a drive-by. It always happened— very active cruise scene back in the day. Drake's closed in 2008. There were biz folks out there every night that you spoke with every day on the phone about deals, but in front of Drake's, you just nodded, because it was about being anonymous. An odd dereliction of friendship that I have never really reconciled. I approached my old neighbor kid three or four times in front of Drake's to say hi and connect as we both cruised, and he was always cold as ice. We had lived on the same street in a small town, but he seemed to hate me. I couldn't understand it. It crushed me. One evening I went to the Melrose Spa at 7269 and ran into the kid. He was being battered into his form of ecstasy beyond belief. I'm pretty vanilla, so it was a trip for me to see. He was in a sling with tons of leather, several bears and a whip involved. Not judging, just an observation of a cute, sweet kid I went to school with. He has passed away, but every time I pass his home, I'm pulled to it in a haunting fashion. I guess it was his rejection of me that causes pain to linger decades later. I was just not his type. I've never owned a whip. My mother has a guy who drives a truck with a giant plastic insect on it. He is her "exterminator.” He is a big galoot who makes my mom laugh. He comes here to her home once a week

to spray crap, pick up rats and eliminate webs of any sort. Once a week. Every seven days. Really. Then she has these two women who are cleaning constantly. One on her knees on the floor every moment, getting every inch of every space clean before it is dirty. My bed is made 12 seconds after I wake. Then we have Tony, the handyman, who will not listen to me but is very sweet. He is here every damn day. I said today, “Mom, do you need all this?” She looked straight at me with a ‘mind your own business’ look and said, "No, Dana, but now they are my family and I can't cut them off.” My inheritance is dwindling in the cause of sweet and wonderful support and friendship, and I could not be more proud. I worked on this TV show a couple decades ago created by a fellow Pasadena boy and dear friend called The Greatest American Hero. I managed the star, Billy Katt. Stephen Cannell wrote and created it, and the loony and lovely Robert Culp was the co-star. Bob would live his life out being my neighbor on Sunset Plaza. Hero was an all-location shoot, six days per week that came very close to killing us all. Stephen was a great, gentle man who also created 21 Jump Street, The Rockford Files, Baretta, Hunter, Riptide, Wiseguy, Silk Stockings and tons more. He never, ever recovered from the death of his son in Malibu. The kid was playing in a beach cave and was buried to death in sand. Everyone on Hero was sweet. Billy was in the original Pippin and the great Brian De Palma movie Carrie with John Travolta and Sissy Spacek, and his mom is Barbara Hale from Perry Mason fame, a wonderful movie star. Just lovely folks. I miss Stephen. Anyway, my agent told me last night someone is sniffing around to make The Greatest American Hero into a feature film. I cannot imagine. I may bring back my other old dregs, Solid Gold and Star Search. I guess everything old is new again.

Dearest Readers, I have a confession to make. As you may or may not know, I have some major surgery coming up and, just in case I never come out of the anesthesia, I want to come clean. I have been raising money, online and at bicoastal benefits, for a double hip replacement. I have tearfully explained that “there is no drag queen union” and “I have no insurance,” blah blah blah. And people have been so generous with their time and money to help me. So much so, in fact, that I feel tremendous guilt—for lying to everyone. There is nothing wrong with my hips, except that they are indeed “childbearing” (in appearance only, of course). You see, I don’t need new hips, I need a new face. Let me explain. I am 49 years old. In Los Angeles drag queen/gay man years, that translates to roughly 112. My face is in worse shape than the Octomom’s vagina. My cheeks are sagging lower than Jennifer Aniston’s box office receipts. The bags under my eyes are bigger than Kim Kardashian’s ass. Yep, my face is just like Jay Leno’s monologue—tired and just not funny anymore. So I took drastic steps. Desperate times call for desperate measures, so I made up a story about “genetic defects” and “bone-on-bone pain” and begged people for money so I could get a double hip replacement. I figured people would be more likely to donate to help keep me out of a wheelchair than to help finance a full facelift. I toyed with the idea of saying I had cancer, but that’s just so depressing. “Keep it light!” I thought to myself, and so hips it was. There is nothing quite as sad and pathetic as a crippled drag queen. I mean, being a big “man/lady clown” is bad enough, right? But one who has to drag a dead leg around is just plain tragic. So I started walking with a pronounced limp and occasionally wincing in pain. But most of the time I courageously gritted my teeth, put on a brave face and continued to
entertain the troops. Now the truth is out, and I have to face the ugly truth about my ugly face. Thanks to your generous contributions, I am getting it all done—eye job, nose job, cheek implants, face lift, lip enlargement, Botox, fillers and the mostneeded procedure of all, having my double chin/turkey waddle sucked out with a medical-grade Dyson vacuum cleaner! Do I feel bad? Yes. Will I look great? Yes! Is getting a gorgeous new face worth selling my soul? I’ll let you know. And while I’m being brutally honest, let me also admit that this, of course, is all a big stupid joke. That’s right— April Fools! I really gotcha, didn’t I? Are you laughing? Why aren’t you laughing? Don’t you get it? I’m not really getting cosmetic surgery! Isn’t that hilarious? That’s right—the pain is real, the limp is real and on April 18, I will be getting not one but two brand-spanking-new hips during a terrifying and expensive three-hour procedure. And that’s just the start! Then I will face months of recuperation and painful physical therapy. Yay! I can hardly wait! All joking aside, a huge thank you to everyone who has donated to my surgery fund. Thanks to everyone’s help, what once seemed downright impossible is well in its way to becoming a reality. I can’t wait to get back onstage with my two new hips and do a high kick that would put Candis Cayne to shame! Well, maybe a little “kickball change” that would make Liza Minnelli smile. Audiences love a reunion. This has been one of the secrets of the success of the TV Land Awards, the one awards show that routinely orchestrates reunions of our favorite TV casts. Alas, it appears those celebrations are a thing of the past. A spokesperson for the network has announced there are no plans for a 2013 TV Land Awards. But that doesn't mean the network is any less committed to such reunions. The most successful show on TV Land is Hot in Cleveland, and it regularly features notable stars of yesteryear. We hear that the upcoming season will find Carol Burnett playing Wendie Malick's mother. Regular viewers of the show know that Tim Conway has already appeared as Betty White's beau. I'm told Conway will also turn up on that episode—wooing Burnett! That's just the beginning. The producers have come up with an idea that seemed impossible—a reunion of The Mary Tyler Moore Show (spurred, no doubt, by the terminal illness of Valerie Harper). In addition to the beloved Betty White (as Elka), Georgia Engel often guest stars as her friend, Mamie Sue. Last season, Ed Asner popped up pursuing an uninterested Elka, and the second season started with Elka in prison with Mary Tyler Moore as her cellmate—complete with her trademark "M" on the wall (the "M" was for "murder"). The show's fifth season will begin with Elka planning a reunion of her old bowling league, which includes Mamie Sue, Mary Tyler Moore as Diane, Cloris Leachman as Peg and Valerie Harper as Angie. This will be the first time all five ladies from The Mary Tyler Moore Show have acted together since the series finale in 1977. Taping is slated to take place on April 5, which is hopefully soon enough to ensure Harper's participation—and 68

would be a lovely bookend to her career. Of course, I think it would be even better if the ladies caught the attention of a couple of guys bowling in the next lane— Ed Asner and Gavin McLeod. Just a suggestion. The new season begins June 19. Far more exciting to me is news that our own Adam Lambert will be participating in his first ever gay Pride festival. The lucky city to get this honor is Miami Beach, which is noteworthy since they are one of the newer Prides in the country (this is their fifth year). And by scheduling the celebration on April 14, they get
the jump on the usual June festivities. Of course, there will be loads of events leading up to the actual parade and festival—not to mention the presence of yours truly. All the details can be found at MiamiBeachGayPride.com. I just returned from spending a bit of time down in South Florida, which included attending the Winter Party Festival. This annual event is different from the various other parties throughout the country because it raises money and awareness for a nonprofit organization. The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force is celebrating its 40th year of service to our community, and the Winter Party was celebrating its 20th year. Of course, I fall somewhere in the middle—a position I specialize in. In addition to having a fabulous time, I was particularly impressed that most of the events were completely sold out in advance. Something to keep in mind for next year. Belinda Carlisle was a gay icon long before her sexy son James came out. In fact, she was a gay icon before James was even born! While her recorded output over the past decade has been sparse at best, she was coaxed into the studio to record a new single to be included on her
latest CD, Icon, a best-of compilation. "Sun" captures Babe at her full-tilt California girl best. I've heard so many arrangements of the song—a stripped-down acoustic version, the radio version, the dance remixes and the version Belinda sings in concert. I love them all. So will you. Could Ryan no longer smile at premieres of terrible movies? Did Julianne get tired of answering the question, "What's Derek doing tonight?" Or did they both simply get tired of waiting for their wedding night to consummate their love— like our dancing bachelor, Sean Lowe, and his betrothed? These kind of arrangements tend to have a limited shelf-life. Just ask Tom Cruise. Every year I look forward to the annual STAGE event here in Los Angeles. STAGE stands for Southland Theatre Artists Goodwill Event, and this will be the 29th annual concert raising money for AIDS Project L.A. The concert attracts numerous Broadway legends to tackle something new, perform with favorite partners or simply recapture the magic of a live show. In other words, they are the TV Land Awards for theater. This year we expect some of the usual suspects: Carole Cook, Patrick Cassidy, Shirley Jones, Tyne Daly, Joely Fisher, Davis Gaines, Florence Henderson, Vicki Lewis, Patricia Morison, Valarie Pettiford, Andrew Rannells, Bruce Vilanch, Joanne Worley and oodles of others. Dear Gossip Gay, I am not sure if this is gossip, but it's pretty damn funny. I was at the PowerZone in West Hollywood on Saturday after my workout at 24 Hour Fitness. It's part of my routine. I lift, I get a shake and then I sit outside at one of those metal tables and flip though magazines. Always Frontiers first! Last Saturday, I was doing just that, and there was a couple fighting outside very loudly. I know gay men fighting on Santa Monica Boulevard isn't anything new, but one of them was on one of those Logo vampire shows, and he was with a young guy. I'm not talking 25. I'm talking, like, 18! Their fight got so intense that the 18-year-old pushed the "star" onto the hood of a car and punched him in the stomach. Eventually the younger guy broke down into tears and ran into that parking garage. Like I said, I don't know if that is gossip or not, but I haven't seen a fight like that in years! WEHO LIBRARY HONORED WITH ‘BEST OF YEAR’ AWARDS BY PAULO MURILLO The West Hollywood Library continues to receive accolades for its architecture and design. The LEED Goldcertified 32,000-square-foot structure has been awarded “Best of 2012,” and it's the winner of the Ralph B. McClure Craftsmanship Award by the Woodwork Institute. Woodwork Institute’s Archetype magazine announced the award in its most recent issue. The West Hollywood Library’s interior design was recognized for its notable millwork. The handmade bamboocoffered ceiling features floral patterned leaves, petals and vines. Another notable millwork is the Children’s Theatre, which reflects one of Michelangelo’s Renaissance design concepts. The millwork was fabricated by SMI Millwork. Established in 1951 by a progressive group of forward-thinking firms, the Woodwork Institute is a California nonprofit corporation that promotes a greater use of architectural millwork products throughout California. The Ralph B. McClure Craftsmanship Award Program is conferred by the Woodwork Institute’s public relations team and overseen by its board, honoring members for
their exceptional craftsmanship and installation of architectural millwork projects. The West Hollywood Library and Municipal Garage was also awarded the 2012 “Best of Year” award by Interior Design magazine in the Institutional Project/Library category this past December. The publication’s Editorin-Chief Cindy Allen and a jury of design leaders selected the winners. The announcement coincided with the magazine’s Best of Year issue. The library’s architect, Johnson Favaro, and interior designer, Carol Cabianica, were also recognized with the award. The West Hollywood Library has become one of the most popular libraries in the County of Los Angeles Public Library System. The hours of operation are Monday through Thursday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.; Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.; closed on Sundays. Save the date: On Saturday, April 6, the City of West Hollywood is holding a community conversation about the City’s Housing Element from 9 a.m. to noon at the West Hollywood Park Auditorium, 647 N. San Vicente Blvd. Residents, tenants, landlords and social service providers have the opportunity to learn about the Housing Element Update Process and discuss the goals and policies for the Draft Housing Element Update 2013-2021. The Housing Element update is a policy guide that provides an indication of the need for housing in the community in terms of availability, affordability and adequacy of housing. It serves as a strategy to address housing needs across the economic and social spectrum. Law requires that cities and counties update housing elements every eight years. WeHo recently adopted an updated housing element for 2008-2014 in September 2011 as part of the General Plan 2035. However, it must now adopt an updated housing element for the next cycle period of October 2013 through October 2021. Attendees will also discuss the city’s housing goals and policies. Public input will be gathered and delivered to the city council and planning commissions for a joint study session in May. ‘FALSETTOS’ PRODUCTION CANCELED FOR NOW BY GREG HERNANDEZ Theatre Out, Orange County's gay and lesbian theater company, has had to cancel its production of the musical Falsettos—at least for now. The first full-length musical to tackle the AIDS crisis head-on, Tony Awardwinning Falsettos examines family dynamics and love in the age of Ronald Reagan and ignorance.
The show went into rehearsals in early February and had been scheduled to open on April 13 and run through May 11. Falsettos, under the direction of Jason Holland and musical director Stephen Hulsey, was to have been the first production performed in a new venue at 402 W. 4th Street in Santa Ana’s Artist Village. “We are sad to report that Falsettos will not be opening as scheduled due to construction delays in our new 72

venue," the theatre states on its Facebook page. "If you have purchased tickets for Falsettos, a refund will be issued." Theatre Out co-founder and producer Joey Baital had described the new venue as “a gem” that would impress regular patrons with the new look and feel that is to include a new layout and seating arrangement. It is supposed to offer many new amenities, including easy access to adjacent restaurants as well as reserved seating. Theatre Out presents works by gay and lesbian playwrights, as well as pieces about the gay and lesbian community, and strives to explore both the classics that shaped LGBT history and new works that are continuing to form, examine and reshape LGBT culture. It's not yet known if Falsettos will be rescheduled. The theater group presented the musical [title of show] earlier this year. After the run of Falsettos, it has productions of the comedy Swimming in the Shallows, the drama The Dying Gaul, the comedy Sordid Lives and the musical Kiss of the Spider Woman. While Lily Tomlin has described her as “one of the last great storytellers,” Coco describes herself on her Facebook page as “Drag Queen/Monologist/World Savior.” The new show, which debuted last fall in New York City, was inspired by something the performer's mother recently shared with her—at 86, she no longer cared about what people thought about her and finally feels free to say whatever the hell she feels like saying. The sassy and outspoken Coco figures, why wait? So she will have the "balls" to share some things she normally wouldn't share onstage, including reflecting on such things as summers spent on a nude beach with her husband, Rafael, who, she is always sure to remind audiences, is from Spain. The show is a comical and poignant blend of monologue, song and multimedia and also includes such topics as
her early childhood dreams of being a stripper, her crush on the Creature from the Black Lagoon, why she left her beloved hometown of New York City and her love/hate relationship with Facebook. Coco laments that when she started doing drag in the ‘90s, she would spraypaint her name on sidewalks in stencil, trying to create a buzz. Now the younger drag queens have the internet or can be discovered on RuPaul's Drag Race. The show will start at 8 p.m. on Saturday, April 13, at the Ernest Borgnine Theater in Long Beach. There will be a VIP Reception at 6 p.m. and a cocktail hour for all ticketholders at 7 p.m. Both receptions will feature a cash bar. TRUMAN CAPOTE COMES TO THE DESERT BY JAMES F. MILLS
Actor/writer Chuck Yates has been studying author Truman Capote on YouTube for the past few months. He’s been watching old interviews with Johnny Carson, Dick Cavett, Barbara Walters, news shows and more, trying to get inside the head of the openly gay man who became a celebrity in the 1960s thanks to writing the novella Breakfast at Tiffany’s and the true crime novel In Cold Blood. All that studying is about to come to fruition when Yates takes the stage as Capote in the one-man show Tru, which plays April 19-28 at the Annenberg Theater in the Palm Springs Art Museum. “He was colorful and complex,” says Yates, an Alabama native who moved to Palm Springs five years ago. “The play is adapted from his own words and writings, so it’s a very witty play.” Tru is set at Christmas 1975 in Capote’s apartment in Manhattan’s United Nations Plaza. Esquire magazine has just published an excerpt of his unfinished novel, Answered Prayers, and his

socialite friends have turned their backs on him because of the thinly veiled versions of them in that excerpt. “He’s alone, bitter and depressed, drinking, taking pills, musing on his life,” says Yates. “It’s a very dark period in his life, but it’s quite entertaining.” In addition to his wit and writing, Capote is best remembered as a short, funny-looking man with effeminate mannerisms and a high-pitched voice. Yates isn’t trying to get those mannerisms and that voice down perfectly, just an approximation of them. “He was his own unique person. Certainly the mannerisms and voice were a part of him, and I’ll try to capture that without it turning into a caricature,” says Yates, noting that neither Robert Morse, who won a Tony for his performance in Tru, nor Phillip Seymour Hoffman, who won an Oscar for playing him in Capote, tried to mimic the voice or mannerisms precisely. Raised in Winnetka, Ill., the 60year-old Ebersole tried her hand at movies, appearing in Amadeus, Tootsie, Richie Rich and others. She also has numerous television credits to her name, including a year-long stint on Saturday Night Live in 1981-82 and a stint on 198689 sitcom The Cavanaughs, plus numerous guest-starring roles over the years. Soap fans may remember her as the ditzy Maxie McDemott on One Life to Live. But it’s the stage where she’s seen her biggest success. She won her first Tony playing Dorothy Brock in the 2001 revival of 42nd Street, plus has Gore Vidal’s The Best Man, Steel Magnolias, Blithe Spirit and Dinner at Eight on her résumé from the last 15 years. A stalker is a person who pursues prey stealthily. If we can personify HIV, it is a stalker. It is stalking our community undercover. We never know when it is going to strike, but we know it is there. And, much like any menace that can't be seen and strikes at will when we least expect it, it creates terror. We wonder who will be next— will it be me? When you live under the threat of any terror long enough, you begin to adapt to it. The human mind makes accommodations for conditions that it cannot control. We have lived under the threat of HIV for more than 30 years. Generations have grown up not knowing anything different than a world stalked by HIV. We have developed defense mechanisms that allow us to cope with the threat. Denial is a means by which we decide that something is not going to happen to us, or we simply put the whole idea of it out of our conscious minds. Denial is a mixed bag. Without denial we would be overwhelmed with all of the bad things that could happen to us today or tomorrow. We could not enjoy our lives if we thought about diseases we could catch, economic hardships we might face or emotional tur-
My drinking increased when I found out in 2005 about my HIVpositive status, because drinking kept me going and helped me to cope with the shame, stigma and discrimination that surround a person when he or she becomes HIV-positive. I couldn’t tell anyone, because I was afraid of rejection. Later, when I was introduced to crystal meth, I felt indestructible, and I thought nothing could hurt me. I was very wrong—I was killing myself, because I wasn’t eating or taking care of myself or taking my HIV medications. I still have vivid images of that Monday morning in October 2007 when my life was about to change. I got arrested right in front of my job. I hit the sidewalk with my car, and that caught the attention of a police officer. I willingly confessed to him and showed him that I had a small bag of crystal meth and a pipe with me, but when he tried to put the handcuffs on me, it set off a paranoid attack that I couldn’t control. I just started screaming and trying to somehow resist being arrested. Then the parking lot became filled with police cars, and an ambulance was called. I was making such a big scene that day that I had to be pepper-sprayed to calm down. Once I got under control, I was taken to the hospital, where I was going to be treated for dehydration and lack of potassium. I remember how

Today I get to be a member of a 12-step program, a member of my local chapter of PFLAG, a volunteer in my local health department and a volunteer for The Tweakers Project, which advocates information, education and support for a simple, sober life for those with the disease of addiction. Recovery has not been an easy path. I have learned that what keeps me going is not the comfort of being in one place but the ability to get out of my comfort zone and still feel comfortable and sober about it. Today I get to be a member of a society that strives for equality and works to eliminate stigma and stereotype while supporting those who are still struggling with acceptance and understanding of the diseases of alcoholism and addiction. ___________________________

Today I am very thankful for every single person who has intervened in my emotional, physical and psychological recovery, and those who have helped me to work on my sobriety. FITNESS Q & A I cannot seem to get my eating under control to lose weight. Suggestions? —Tyler, Culver City As a fitness trainer and nutrition junkie, all of my clients not only lose weight fast and safely, but they are replacing fat with lean muscle. A lack of education and understanding about how the body works can put anyone into a spiral state of despair and hopelessness. What we consume ultimately results in 80 percent of how our body is going to look. The other 20 percent is what we do on the physical level—weight training, cardio, cycling, swimming, etc. If you’re one of the many that has tried every diet in the book, listen up. First and foremost, I want you to scratch the word “diet” and replace it with “nutritional plan.” When we think diet, we have a tendency to think of starvation and eating very little. A nutritional plan is eating clean, wholesome foods— lean meats, vegetables, grains and healthy fats (almonds, flaxseed oil and olive oil). The minute we wake up, we want to make sure we fuel our body within 30 minutes of starting our day. Skipping breakfast will not only make us sluggish and tired, but our metabolism will slow down, holding on to every calorie, resulting in increased body fat. I suggest having 20-30 grams of protein in the morning. Whether it’s eggs or a protein shake, the protein will start to activate your metabolism. When we want to lose weight, we have a tendency not to eat carbohydrates. But carbohydrates are not the enemy— sugars, saturated fats and sodium are what we need to be cautious of. When we decrease consumption of carbohydrates, our bodies’ energy (glucose) levels drop, resulting in sluggishness and lack of energy, and our clear thinking diminishes. With that said, I suggest carbing up early, leaving the latter part of the day
to consume only protein and vegetables. We want to make sure that throughout the day we are eating small-portionsized meals every three hours. This will keep our metabolism active and allow our body to burn calories at an accelerated rate. I would use 3 or 4 p.m. as a cut-off point for consuming carbs. Now, some carbohydrates are better than others. I suggest consuming a sweet potato over a baked potato, and brown rice over white rice. Oatmeal is also a great carbohydrate. When we fuel our bodies with healthy carbs in the early part of the day, we’re igniting our metabolism, we have the energy to get us through our workday and we’ll have the energy to do our workout, whether it’s first thing in the morning or in the evening. There is no need to carb-load in the evening. I promise if you apply this principle, not only will you notice a drop in body fat, but you’ll notice an increase in your energy level. As a fitness trainer, I highly recommend taking a minimum of three to four days a week to engage in some sort of physical exercise. Five days is even better! In closing, I want to stress that our bodies are mostly made up of protein and water. We want to fuel our body with an even balance of protein, carbohydrates, vegetables, healthy fats and water! Water is not only a diuretic, but more importantly is the lifeline in allowing our body to live and function. I suggest consuming no less than two liters of water per day. For more active people, I suggest consuming a gallon of water throughout the day.

TACKLING THE MONDAY MORNING QUARTERBACK Over and over, I hear people criticizing others for the choices they make in life. "They shouldn't have done that! They should have done this!" Basically, people love to ‘Monday morning quarterback’ and take those moments to ‘should’ on those whom they perceive made the wrong choices.

Not surprisingly, I've been getting some of that as well. As people watch the heavily edited version of my life played back on Bravo, I get a lot of support and cheering on for things I did on the show— and I have received harsh criticism and concern about, well, other things I did on the show. It’s almost as if people are watching my life unfold in real time, but like a Monday morning replay of a Sunday afternoon football game, that part of my life has already been played and there is nothing I can do at this point to change it. And believe me, this frustrates me too. So this made me wonder: Why do we ‘Monday morning quarterback’? Now, I know what some of you are thinking—"I'm gay, I don't watch football!" To which I would answer that you are generalizing, because some gay men do watch and love football. And besides, who doesn't like a good tight end? But I digress. The technical name for ‘Monday morning quarterbacking’ is called "Hindsight Bias." (I know, again with talking about hinds!) The problem with hindsight bias is that it can lead you to unfairly judge another person (or team) for their actions, when they may have made an honest—even unavoidable—mistake. Yes, a genuine mistake.
When we look at those who committed an action we disapprove of, we often can think of several other options that would have led to a better outcome (or so we think). If the team had only done one of those play thingies, they most certainly would have gotten the extra touchdown to win the game. If Janet Jackson had not been doing tequila shooters with Justin Timberlake after an afternoon of going through the bargain bin at the local TJ Maxx when she suddenly proclaimed “I have a great idea,” she wouldn't have had a wardrobe malfunction. And if I had known that so many people would be upset that I had lunch with my father on my reality show, I probably would have had dinner. The reason people ‘Monday morning quarterback’ is simple—they already know the outcome. They know how things turned out, so they get an inflated sense of their own foresight and claim they saw it coming. All the while, as these after-the-face experts are using their Hindsight Bias, they are neglecting the confusion and the fog that may have steered the other person to the series of decisions that led to that unfortunate outcome. Just think of the Oscars. If you filled out one of those Oscar ballots at a home party, then you got to see in vivid detail that you weren't as insightful as you thought. But if you're at the same party and don't fill one out,
you may be tempted to think you would have guessed more winners than you actually would have. Once the envelope has been opened, we forget about the wrong answer and gravitate toward what we now know is the right one. According to a recent study by Colin Camerer and Shinsuke Shimojo in the online journal Psychological Science, hindsight bias likely stems from the fact that when given new information, the brain tends to file away the old data and ignore it. Once we know the outcome of a decision or event, we can't easily retrieve those now old and incorrect files, so we can't accurately evaluate something after the fact. So there you go—none of us is really that smart until we know the outcome of the event. Thus, you will continue to have football teams make the wrong plays, singers losing their tops (or at least claiming it was a mistake when they thought it would be a good idea at the time) and people like me on Bravo reality shows stepping in poop and then having it repeated on a loop 100 times over before they can scrape it off their metaphorical shoe. So the next time you are tempted to tell somebody what they should have done in a situation that did not turn out well, put your hand on that person's back and tell them the painful truth—"If I had been in that situation, I probably would have done the same thing too."

AN ARGUMENT FOR BUTTON-FLY JEANS BY JIM LARKINS The term “zipper entrapment” would draw a cringe from even the strongest of men. But for a large sector of the male population, an overzealous quick zip after a trip to the urinal has resulted in a subsequent trip to the emergency room. The problem has no doubt been around since 1913, when the zipper was invented and the marriage between this modern convenience and trousers came about. But not until the last decade was this plight of the impatient pisser investigated on a large scale. According to a study published this month in the British Journal of Urology by Herman Singh Bagga, a University of California San Francisco urology resident, an estimated 17,616 people were rushed to the ER between 2002 and 2012 because they caught their genitals (mostly penises) in zippers. The study relied on information from the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System, which collects data on such injuries throughout the U.S. Zippers are second only to bicycles as a means for penile injuries in adult males, explains Bagga. While permanent damage is not all that common, meat-grinding zipper incidents have resulted in surgical interventions such as undesired circumcisions. More commonly, though, are infections. A great deal of bacteria can be found in the area, so if the skin breaks, of course this becomes an immediate

problem. If you do choose to extract your member from the teeth of a torturous zipper yourself, you’re going to want to wash it thoroughly and use a bit of antibiotic ointment. However, if the problem does get out of hand, don’t let embarrassment deter you from getting professional medical help. Bagga’s motivation to conduct the data analysis was based on two reasons. First, while there has been a growing body of literature on how to free a trapped penis—utilizing screwdrivers, wire cutters and various other hardware—many emergency room doctors don’t expect such cases and therefore don’t familiarize themselves with the techniques. The other reason for Bagga’s inquiry is that he himself has suffered zipper entrapment, and he suspects that many more men do than are reported. Not to state the obvious, but paying close attention to that most valuable of physical appendages when hurrying through the daily routine of repeatedly relieving one’s self is key to prevention. Also, whether you prefer boxers or briefs, make sure you don one or the other every day—or swap the meat-eating zipper for a button fly.
