AutoFit to Contents: Select this option button to let Word adjust each column’s width to fit its contents. You may need to adjust the widths afterward.

AutoFit to Window: Select this option button to have Word make the table automatically fit the window’s width.

Click the OK button to close the Convert Text to Table dialog window. Word converts the text to a table. Figure 5–16 shows the sample text converted to a table.

Creating Table Headings Many tables need one or more rows of headings at the top of the columns. To distinguish the headings, you can apply different formatting, either by simply using boldface or by applying a table style and selecting the Header Row check box in the Table Style Options group on the Table Tools Design tab of the ribbon. When a table runs from one page to the next, you’ll normally want the headers to repeat at the top of the second page. To make Word do this automatically for you, select the row or rows you want to repeat, and then choose Table Tools Layout ➤ Data ➤ Repeat Header Rows.

Nesting One Table Inside Another Table When you need to create a complex layout, you can nest one table inside another, so that one cell of the outer table contains the whole of the inner table. Figure 5–17 shows an example of a nested table. To nest a table, click in the cell in which you want to nest the table, and then insert the table as usual.
