Three experimental choreographers create new works on the classically trained dancers of Pennsylvania Ballet with music created and performed by musicians and composers from the Curtis Institute of Music. The collaborative adventure begins three weeks before the Festival, as the dance makers, the dancers, and the musicians meet for the first time—and by the Festival’s opening night, they will have made three new dances that push the artistic boundaries of all involved. Expect a highly virtuosic, wildly creative program of dance unlike any seen before. Pennsylvania Ballet, one of the premier ballet companies in the United States, recently celebrated their historic 50th season. Founded in 1923, the Curtis Institute of Music, one of the world’s leading conservatories, educates and trains exceptionally gifted young musicians. FringeArts, a renowned presenter of the world’s most cuttingedge, high-quality artists, is one of the few American institutions specializing in new contemporary performance.

25 FringeArts.com + 215.413.1318

Words of the Choreographers Georg Reischl: Since I do not know the dancers I want to stay very open-minded and start with an empty canvas. I would like it to be a creative process, a process in which the dancers will be part of shaping the piece. I would like to get to know the dancers as they are and how they cope with movement and how they translate information. Slowly we will start collecting movement and material, which will become the basis for the piece.

Itamar Serussi: I am not preparing any phrases or specific movements, as I would like the material to develop from the encounter between me and the dancers. Also, working with the four local musicians is a new element for me in the creating process. But creating a piece with classically trained dancers will be even more so. Their way of moving will be very different to mine, but I’m hoping that friction in styles in itself will be inspiring for all of us. The unexpected is very much allowed in my creation process.

Zoe Scofield: The layering of mediums offers me ways to explore and present my work that is simultaneously opposing and complementary— playing with the elements of time, space, and the dancers’ physical relationships to objects, each other, and the audience. The lighting, video, sound, costumes, and set are all employed as objects that are also “choreographed,” making them active bodies in the space.

A watery future.

August

WetLand Mary Mattingly (New York City) World Premiere! Nature and the city. WetLand is an interactive public art installation, island-based ecosystem, and mobile habitat moored on the Delaware River. Built in response to the conditions of a near future, WetLand is designed for a time when people are near the water again, as rivers and oceans overtake our cities and towns. During the Festival it will host concerts, workshops, skill shares, and artistic gatherings.

Why the title WetLand? Mary Mattingly: I was thinking about the combination in a very literal way: wet and land, to describe a watery, sinking future. I spend a lot of time thinking about how we live in a social system that allows us an illusion of a connection with nature. How do habitat, water, and art connect for you? Mary Mattingly: These things are all necessities for me, and I need one as much as the other. Water has always been a particular concern for me. I grew up in an area that continually flooded, and where the drinking water contained dangerously high levels of agricultural runoff.

“I wanted to bring more attention to the necessity of wetlands, and pair it with a sinking house to describe causation through a symbolic artwork.” Mary Mattingly, artist

You’ll be living on WetLand. Why is this important? Mary Mattingly: Living on WetLand is an essential part of an experiment that needs to be played out in real time. Like a form of performance art, it’s an exploration through endurance, and we keep the living systems running. Why the distinct “manmadeness” of WetLand? Mary Mattingly: It’s important for me to distinguish this work from doing something in a “back to land” context. Leaving the city in most cases is a luxury that allows for a different perspective. We want to have more chances for that perspective here in our cities, and bringing nature and natural living systems to a city’s periphery is a way I’ve thought to do that. Why breakups? Quinn Bauriedel: A breakup is something so familiar to all of us. We all know about it and we instantly recognize it. We’ve expanded the concept toward the epic, taking over a whole building with small intimate moments en route to a universal gesture. What makes PAFA the right place for this show? Quinn Bauriedel: We behave in particular ways in a museum; everything is hushed. The emotions are hushed, the voices and bodies are hushed. This presents a lot of possibilities to break through the hush, to transgress the socially acceptable museum behavior. How will the audience experience the show? Quinn Bauriedel: We hope that the audience cannot keep the play at arms length but that they, too, get ensnared by the breakups. The theme is a universal one; it touches all of us. No doubt, the audience will place themselves into the work, almost as fellow participants as well as viewers. Photo: Courtesy of the artist

A new actor takes the stage each performance. Festival Executive Producer Tom Lussenhop Festival Co-Producer Christine Hartwell

On stage, in a sealed envelope, the script awaits as the audience arrives. An actor, who has never read the script, steps on stage and opens the envelope. Then the actor performs the script for the first—and last—time. There are no rehearsals, no director, no set. But then a carrot, a ladder, a rabbit, a bear, a circus, some poison, a playwright, an actor, and the audience become ensnared in this wild theatrical adventure. Unable to leave his country, Iranian playwright Nassim Soleimanpour created White Rabbit Red Rabbit to travel the world when he couldn’t, and speak to audiences in his stead. Nassim Soleimanpour is an independent multidisciplinary theatermaker from Tehran, Iran. Best known for White Rabbit Red Rabbit, his work has been shown throughout the world.

“It took more than six years for me to finish the play. Still I remember the trigger, an anxiety dream: I was committing suicide on the stage in front of a live audience.” Nassim Soleimanpour, playwright

Q&A with Nassim Soleimanpour Why is the title White Rabbit Red Rabbit? Nassim Soleimanpour: Actors do not know the text until they read it on the stage. To guide them through such situations the text had to contain some cues. I still remember when I first picked Red Rabbit as one of them, “Dear actor! Follow these instructions as soon as you hear the word Red Rabbit . . .” I stopped typing and looked at the cursor. “A red rabbit? It doesn’t make any sense. Shall I delete it?“ Well—I didn’t. How does the play’s setting appeal to your artistic sensibilities? Nassim Soleimanpour: We often get trapped in traditions. Theater is a rabbit cage: definitions we have for directing, acting, audience, etc. These paradigms need to be shifted. Theater needs to breathe. Otherwise it can’t survive in the jungle of media. I am playing with structures more than playing with words on the stage. In the play, you ask the audience to email you. Have any interesting exchanges come of this? Nassim Soleimanpour: Each day I read a dozen emails from actors, producers, and audiences around the globe. A book nobody else has ever read. They send me photos, movies, and texts about themselves and the show. I remember once I received emails from two audience members during a show. I realized they were both watching the same show in Lithuania. They just sent photos of the show and I put them in touch by exchanging their cell numbers! Photo: Courtesy of the artist

The Adults New Paradise Laboratories World Premiere! By a mysterious lake in the mountains, two families gather at a vacation house. Outside, the natural world festers with dangers beyond human control; inside, human nature resides and adults behave badly. Influenced by Chekhov and the paintings of Eric Fischl, and set to experimental music by Bhob Rainey, the highly physical and choreographed New Paradise ensemble treads a path between natural beauty and adult frustration gone spectacularly awry. New Paradise Laboratories, founded in 1996, is an experimental performance ensemble that explores radical means of expression to bend and reshape conventional ideas of theater. The Adults brings together members of NPL’s original ensemble with their new ensemble. This presentation of The Adults is supported by The Charlotte Cushman Foundation. The Adults has been supported by The Pew Center for Arts & Heritage, National Endowment for the Arts, Independence Foundation New Theatre Works Initiative, and the Wyncote Foundation. The Adults was developed, in part, with the support of The Orchard Project, a program of The Exchange (2013) and the White Pines Resident Ensemble Program (2013).

What’s the setting? Whit MacLaughlin: Well, it’s not a normal, run-of-the-mill vacation. We’re imagining that there’s a wildness in the natural world that exists outside the boundaries of normal human experience but still affects it. It’s like the multiple “adults-on-vacation” are installed as artworks into the natural world in our piece. They are in the world at large, but not of it. Where did you draw inspiration? Whit MacLaughlin: We have always relied on visual art as a starting place to develop our material—instead of relying on a script. In a very real way, paintings, sculptures, and installations become the diving boards that we jump from to launch a work. Hopefully, there’s water in the pool. What’s been the creative process? Whit MacLaughlin: We worked with the paintings of Eric Fischl, by creating what we call proposals, invented moments we string together, based on stories the actors write after they have been sculpted into the shapes given them by the artwork. The paintings gave way to stories that burst directly from the actors’ bodies. Photo: Courtesy of the artist

“Like walking in a dream.” Liza Wade Green, co-director

Q&A with The Institute for Psychogeographic Adventure (IPA) How did The Institute for Psychogeographic Adventure come about? IPA: We were drawn to each other by a mutual interest in creating performance that challenged traditional roles and expectations for audience members. We also wanted to create work in collaboration with a community that responds to architecture, local history, and the evolution of the everyday. How do you create a show throughout a neighborhood? IPA: We like to utilize sites that are forgotten or overlooked—hidden alleyways, under-utilized gardens— public and private spaces frequented by long-term residents—homes, basements, rooftops, shops, offices, cafes, backyards, etc. We like to unearth new perspectives on overlooked places. Places that tell us stories.

What kind of collaborators do you recruit? IPA: Sometimes our collaborators are individuals and sometimes they are artists collectives or companies. We are interested in a wide range of artists and community members: actors, acrobats, singers, dancers, musicians, historic re-enactors, designers, skateboarders, computer programmers, tarot readers, tour guides, mariachi bands, dog walkers, delivery guys, community organizers, retirees, shopkeepers, entrepreneurs, chefs, millionaires. Romeo Castellucci Socìetas Raffaello Sanzio (Italy) Cut off your tongue. Acclaimed director Romeo Castellucci connects a massive black hole to an artist’s destruction of his work to a philosopher’s suicide, in this manifestation of the devastating impact of absence on the human psyche. Through a constellation of intense visual displays, unnerving soundscapes from deep space, and passages of lyrical beauty, audiences confront the unseeable, unknowable entity of that which is present but never revealed. Socìetas Raffaello Sanzio was founded in 1981 in Cesena, Italy, by painter and set designer Romeo Castellucci, musician Chiara Guidi, and theorist Claudia Castellucci. They have established an international reputation as one of the most fascinating contemporary theater companies, renowned for the aesthetic radicalism and profound humanity of their plays. This presentation of The Four Seasons Restaurant has been supported by The Pew Center for Arts & Heritage. This presentation of The Four Seasons Restaurant is also funded by the National Endowment for the Arts.

How did the show come about? Romeo Castellucci: I was thinking of the artist and his/her role in society; I was thinking that sometimes subtraction and refusal can be—and can express—an aesthetic act. That’s why Rothko’s act of removing his paintings from the walls of the famous restaurant in the Seagram Building in New York seemed like an image in itself to me. You draw from a diverse array of sources: How did you link these sources together? Romeo Castellucci: Rothko, Empedocles, and Hölderlin shun the image: it becomes the background of a representation of itself, as pure appearance. This fragile appearance becomes a mirror of the onlooker’s existential condition. Why did you choose to include a neoclassical aesthetic? Romeo Castellucci: There was a formal pursuit of unemotional beauty in movements, and of anachronistic forms. For a lot of painting, from the Renaissance to Neoclassicism, and a lot of sculpture, from Hellenistic and Roman sculpture to Symbolist sculpture, it’s about finding that absolute elegance which is buried in form; finding the cold precision of an aesthetic that is controlled down to the marrow, here understood as political radicalism. Photo: Peggy Kaplan

“[Castellucci’s] pieces are ruthless and demand that you approach them in a state of wonder. You get out in direct proportion to what you put in.” Culturebot “On a certain level, all theater is a fight against reality.” Romeo Castellucci, director

Antigone with all male performers—just as it was in Ancient Greece. Except it’s the here and now and there is the runway and there is the pop culture and designer names and voguing and there is sexuality and strutting and grief and dance history and deep bass. Antigone Sr. is a genre bender, the largest edition of Harrell’s acclaimed series of works inspired by the provocation—what if the Harlem ball culture of the 1960s had paraded its way into downtown New York’s early postmodern dance scene and had a nice, long talk? Trajal Harrell’s work has been presented in New York, internationally, and throughout the U.S. His series Twenty Looks or Paris is Burning at The Judson Church has so far been created in seven sizes. Antigone Sr., the largest in the series, won the 2012 Bessie Award for Best Production. The presentation of Antigone Sr. was made possible by the New England Foundation for the Arts’ National Dance Project, with lead funding from the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation and The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.

“Performance can be a way in which we collectively reimagine the impossibilities of history and make room for new possibilities in the world we make today.” Trajal Harrell, choreographer

Additional show!

Twenty Looks or Paris is Burning at The Judson Church (XS) Trajal Harrell (New York City) The smallest of the Twenty Looks performance series, (XS) is a concentrated fusion of voguing and postmodern dance performed by Harrell. There is no documentation of this intimate work: (XS) exists only in the spontaneous connection between Harrell and the audience. Choreographer Trajal Harrell Lighting Stéfane Perraud, Trajal Harrell Dancer Trajal Harrell

Q&A with choreographer Trajal Harrell How did your idea of “conversations” come about? Trajal Harrell: In 2001, I began to think of my performance work as an imaginary meeting between the voguing dance tradition and early postmodern dance. My starting point was going to voguing balls but also to fashion shows. I used the catwalk or runway as my signature for this theoretical meeting: the runway as a site of pedestrian movement— which both traditions shared as an identifying element— and a site where these two traditions could bump up alongside another set of codes and procedures.

FringeArts 140 North Columbus Boulevard (at Race) Wheelchair accessible September 9 at 6pm, 6:45pm + 7:30pm $15 / Members pay $10 Student + 25-and-under tickets $10 Only 25 seats and 25 minutes.

What themes interested you most about Antigone and Ancient Greek theater? Trajal Harrell: It is easy today when we see men performing as women to classify these forms as drag, camp, travesty, or to base our conclusions on notions of sexual identity; but sexual identities in Ancient Greece did not fall into the categories we prescribe today. Perhaps this performance of mixing genders had its own codes and references.

Photo: Antoine Tempé

What is the setting? Trajal Harrell: The work takes place in the here and now. We address the audience first as citizens in their seats, but eventually we move into the fictive realm of outside the palace gates just as it is in Sophocles’s play. So, what would it be like at court? I take a lot of my cues from the sound and aesthetic inventions of voguing and postmodern dance: repetition, authenticity, make-believe, low-fi, hi-lo, faux couture, loudness, and the runway.

The girls of the Pony Palace know how to run the spread, cheerleaders still have all the power, and everyone wants to play forever. The frenzied intensity of high school football comes alive with an all-female and genderqueer cast portraying the players, coaches, and cheerleaders of this iconic, brutal, and historically male sport. The hoorah language of athletes and coaches mixes with awkward high school-speak. Games are played onstage as a live high school band blares out pop songs. The audience, like fans, follows the shifting stakes, relationships, and power dynamics within a team—as young athletes come to place belief in something bigger than themselves. Half Straddle, an Obie Award winning company, produces plays, performances, videos, and music written and directed by Tina Satter.

57

How did this setting appeal to you? Tina Satter: The setting is a high school football team that exists a couple airwaves removed from reality. It’s a slightly abstracted, theatricalized space because it’s theater and I’m always interested in theater taking me beyond the edges of reality into a liminal and exciting space in subtle, unexpected ways. Why football? Tina Satter: It’s the iconic, totally American, very very male sport that feels at once universal, but it’s something just men can play so that’s totally weird. Initially it was not a political act to make the play, because my first draw was to the awesome uniforms and the language and the toughness of the sport and getting to poeticize all that. What’s it like to re-enter the world of teens as an adult? Tina Satter: I don’t really think of it as re-entry. It’s more like channeling a part of myself that, for better or worse, is still very present. An adolescent interest in pop culture, and huge amounts of feeling, and craving a kind of unknown, undefined beauty, and the idea that anything could still be possible—all those things are still close to the surface to me, which is in part why I make art, and shows like this. Photo: Courtesy of the artist

“A giddily exuberant confection that manages to conjure a distinctively eccentric theatrical world.” Jason Zinoman, The New York Times “It’s about trying to capture and stage a feeling—when you’ve worked together with other people to do something and then it is over and you are on a bus and you are tired and bruised and dirty and your lungs ache, and singing some terrible song at the top of your lungs.” Tina Satter, writer–director

Beliefs, politics, and concerns can vary widely depending on the neighborhood you live in; how much money you make; whether you are black, white, Latino, Asian, or a combination; single or married, divorced or widowed. Everyone knows there are others who experience the city differently—we can read the statistics. So what happens when those “statistics” share a stage together? What happens when hot-button issues are addressed live to 100 representatives of a true cross section of the city? Rimini Protokoll is led by Helgard Haug, Stefan Kaegi, and Daniel Wetzel, who have created works of theater, sound and radio plays, film, and installations. By the numbers… 100 Philadelphians take the stage

Q&A with co-director Helgard Haug Why have “real citizens” as performers instead of actors? Helgard Haug: We call our performers “experts” because they are experts of their professions and biographies as opposed to actors who perform other peoples’ lives. Our experts stand and speak for themselves. Can you describe how the stage functions? Helgard Haug: One of the most important elements is a green round carpet in the center of the stage. On the ceiling, right on top of it, we install a camera that captures the movements of the performers from the bird’s-eye perspective and projects this onto a round screen at the back. The audience can follow the movements of the 100 from above and observe how majorities and minorities form, when society is all on one side, or when it splits into two equal groups. How do audiences connect to the performance? Helgard Haug: It is a very emotional experience for the audience as well as for the participants. By watching how the 100 representatives make decisions you can ask yourself where you stand: how would I answer this question, which would be my peer group for the next, would I dare to express my own thoughts even if this would make me stand alone? “The delight of the show rests in its techniques: overhead cameras show participants forming giant pie charts, voting with torch lights in secret ballots, or forming color-coded graphs in answer to political and personal questions.” Peter Crawley, The Irish Times “In the show there is the sentence: We are Philadelphia because we are a body with 100 heads! 100% Philly is about this creature.” Helgard Haug, co-director

Rosas danst Rosas Rosas/Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker (Belgium) Rhythmic complexity, stylized minimalism, fierce abstract feminism. Rosas danst Rosas is the seminal dance that launched the career of one of the most influential choreographers of the past thirty years. In its reintroduction, this contemporary dance classic proves as fiery now as when it debuted in 1983. Fun fact: Beyoncé drew heavily from Rosas danst Rosas for her “Countdown” music video. Rosas was founded by choreographer Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker in New York City in 1983, and later made its home base in Brussels, Belgium. Along with the earlier Fase (1982), Rosas danst Rosas made De Keersmaeker an internationally respected and sought-after artist.
