from the PRESIDENT WE ARE THE BENEFICIARY OF DECADES OF LOVE AND SUPPORT.

Dr. T.J. and Susan Arant

What a welcome! To Kansas. To Wichita. To Friends University. Susan and I arrived a week ahead of our July 1 start, and we’ve scarcely stopped for breath. In the first 120 days, I met more than 140 business, civic, and nonprofit leaders in Wichita, and traveled to meet with all but one of our Board members (thanks to Mike Shockley!). During the first semester, we hosted almost 1,000 guests, at one time or another, in our home for lunch, dinner or brunch. In addition to that, I’ve met with just about everyone working at Friends, faculty and staff, and some more than once. I’m trying to follow the advice of a friend of mine, a fellow president: “In your first months, go everywhere you’re invited to go, and listen to everything that is said.”

Here’s what I’ve learned so far: Friends University is a strong, vital presence in Wichita and in Kansas. We are the beneficiary of decades of love and support. We have a body of faculty and staff who not only love this institution but who also work hard for its students. And we have a student body that can give you joy in so many ways – as achievers, as performers, as athletes, as adult learners returning to school. And not least, as good people joining other good people on a journey of learning, our community upholds a tradition of excellence. I learned a lot about this tradition at Homecoming this year as our classes of 1961, 1971, and 1986 returned. From these passionate alumni, I heard story after story of how Friends University had changed their lives and put them on a good track for their careers. But most of all, I heard from them story after story of the people who made Friends University what it was, and what it is today.

Underneath every anecdote and tale was a consistent feature: a person who cared, sometimes more than was expected, about a student. What I’ve learned in these first months really boils down to this one fact. We care about people here. No, let me say it more specifically and accurately: we love people here. And because we love especially our students, we show up for work every day with a joy for making them successful and strong. What a great place to be!

On Oct. 24, 2011, we were able to confirm this information with the Kansas Division of Vehicles. We anticipate keeping our alumni and friends posted as this project moves forward over the course of the next few months.

honor.

What goes into turning a cast of 16 into more than 70 different characters? ACTS of FAITH found out when they put on a new contemporized comic adaptation of “Pilgrim’s Progress” in November. Patrick Dorn’s take on the John Bunyan 17th century classic had students playing roles as varied as the cartoonish TweedleAttitude, the demonic Apollyon and the lumbering Giant Despair (all played by freshman Hunter “Blayzse” Trotter), often with very little time to alter costumes and makeup in between. Amidst humorous pop-culture references and lightsaber fights, the play still retained the original story of a man, Christian, embarking on a long and treacherous journey to the Celestial City, with a biblical message ringing clearly throughout the performance.

Dr. Charles Parker

“excellence and love of the art” to Wichita. Dr. Parker said he was astonished when he was told of the “I was floored then, very honored,” Dr. Parker said. “The first thing that came to mind was a line from Emily Dickinson: ‘I’m nobody! Who are you? Are you nobody, too?’ I was very honored. They were very kind.” As a teacher, Dr. Parker seeks to teach his students about the connections made in his art. “My bottom line is I don’t want anybody to look bad,” he said. “And then the other thing is I want them to commit to an ensemble. I really would like to see a connection. There has to be that linkage. I’m always wanting people to come back to seeing clearly and to interacting clearly, and appreciate the value of what it is that they are doing, so for me those are kind of the main pedagogy principles.”

Junior Denisse Mayen, makeup head, led the extensive process required in transforming the actors into their distinctive characters. She said Taylor Stevens’ and Tyler Vosburg’s quick change from Vanity Fair socialites to Doubting Castle zombies in the very next scene was the most difficult change of the production. While she was the only person on the make-up crew, she was quick to compliment the cast for helping. This was the Kansas premiere for Dorn’s adaptation, with the show first being produced in 2008 by Denver’s The Troupe. ACTS of FAITH performed the production in honor of its 15th anniversary. Founded in 1996, the group is an interdenominational ministry outreach of the Friends University Theatre Department. Members present comic, dramatic and pantomime performances at churches and schools throughout the state, and at regional and national Christian drama and worship conferences. 12 F riends U niversity

A biker. A basketball coach. A hospital chaplain. A pastor of a Friends church. They all share a deep commitment to God and the common experience of having their faith broadened and enriched by the Master of Arts in Christian Ministry program at Friends University. What they do not share, though, is a common path to that faith and their ministries. Their journeys are varied and far from simple, but always interesting or inspiring.

Kenny Hultman was a trucking executive in his 20s and then became a pilot and flight instructor. He’s got an MBA and a Master of Arts in Christian Ministry from Friends University. He runs his own truck repair business in Wichita and side ventures from barbecue to firewood.

But when people look at Hultman, most see “Stubby,” the bearded, mohawked leather-clad biker. And that’s fine with him. His life, he said, became much better when he stopped faking that he was comfortable in a suit and tie and accepted himself. “I felt like this square peg trying to be shoved through a hole. I had a moment of clarity that I had to change this. I got into some counseling and quit drinking, drugs and smoking,” Hultman said. “I started doing things that made me feel better about myself. I reconnected with God through [Alcoholics Anonymous], though it didn’t come overnight.” Drawn to share the word of the Lord, he formed Diakanos, a nonprofit ministry, a half-dozen years ago to clothe and feed Wichita street people. “Throughout my life I never had anyone approach me and describe a different way,” Hultman said. “It’s a harsh world on the street, but what I saw was a person in need. If God’s on my side, what do I have to worry about?” His journey led to Friends University and a richer feel for ministry and his place in it. The journey also led him to intern – three times – as a chaplain at Wesley Medical Center. There, they saw in Hultman someone who might connect with patients and families not easily reached, a leap of faith justified by him receiving the hospital’s humanitarian award last spring. “The experience was extremely life-altering,” he said. “Being with patients or family members in the last moments of life, or standing next to the doctor when he tells parents their teenage son died in a car wreck … it changes your life beyond description.”

Ben Staley, pastor at Northridge Friends Church in Wichita, has been in the ministry for more than four decades. Before he was born, his mother pledged to dedicate a son to the Lord if blessed with a boy. “For as far back as I can remember there was always a concern about pleasing the Lord,” said Staley, who has served at Northridge since 1990. “Through my childhood there were moments of making total commitments.” One came about age 8 when the spirit filled him during worship. “Something changed within me, emotionally, physically and spiritually.” Another came as a teen, when Staley and a friend became lost in the Canadian woods on a fishing trip. He prayed for guidance and a renewed commitment “if You can get me out of here.” They found a deer trail that led to a stream that led to camp, discovering both “a deer path and a renewed spiritual path.”

FEATUREstory

It might seem that path easily led to the ministry. Not so. “I always thought it would be a fulfilling path, but I never spoke of it, because it seemed so worthy and too important to talk about unless I was sure.” Certainty came after exploring other fields at Michigan State University. Not finding something that might satisfy more than the ministry, he enrolled at Taylor University in Indiana. While there, he was called to minister at a Friends United Meeting church near Fairmount, Ind., and then earned his degree at Fort Wayne Bible College. The Lord led him to Ohio, California and then Kansas. He earned his master’s degree in Christian Ministry at Friends University and, next spring, a doctorate from George Fox University. Mission work is at the core of his faith. He’s worked with prisoners, with the poor, in schools and in central Africa, where he’s been involved in efforts to establish churches and train leaders in strife-torn Rwanda, Burundi and the Congo. “What’s important to me is to live out a missional journey, to present Christ in ways that demonstrate his love and heart and mind. That takes me far beyond the walls of any church.”

Demarcco Owens preached his first sermon at age 9 atop a crate at an Indianapolis church. Son of a single mom, “the only men I knew were in the pulpit. I really wanted to do what they were doing. I would memorize their sermons.” But as a teen, he fell away from God until a pillar of faith intervened. “When I was 17 or 18, my mother looked me in the eye and said she was disappointed in me because of the life I had been living. I wanted to make her happy and live my life for God.” After high school, he went to Southwestern Christian College near Dallas, which gave him the opportunity to play basketball. Then he coached in North Garland and served as an assistant minister of evangelism. Five years ago, Wichita’s Madison Avenue Church of Christ called. “I was sent here to help build the church, which had 20 to 35 members. We started doing ministry and implementing programs that would help people in their spiritual, as well as their physical, walk.”

Membership rose above 50 in a year and is now 125. “It’s been an excellent experience. I have grown up as a man and as a man of God. I don’t feel complete until I’m one-on-one ministering to someone, down in the trenches.” Last August, Owens began the Master of Arts in Christian Ministry program at Friends and it has broadened him and his faith. “I met some very excellent godly people who helped really open up my spirit.” Basketball remains a piece of the equation, as Owens is in his second year as Wichita South High School’s head boys’ coach. “I’m learning my purpose at the school is not just about wins and losses.” He serves as a role model – illustrating how young men can “focus on themselves and God instead of running the streets.” Owens wants to “help them become great men and great men of God.” With his many duties, including husband and father of five, “I go home tired, but I feel complete because I’ve helped someone else see the Lord.”

Ruth Snapp’s faith journey is a lifelong one of commitment and service. After earning an English literature degree in California, she felt called to nursing, which brought her to Kansas. Ever since, she’s combined health care and her faith. And that faith has involved many explorations. In college, she remembers “realizing that I needed my own relationship with the Lord. I couldn’t lean on my parents’ any more.” Nursing school and its life-and-death situations brought further examination. “My faith was tested, and it became much more solid.” Not long after joining the profession, she was recruited to the Nurses Christian Fellowship – part of the InterVarsity Christian Fellowship campus ministry – and focused on helping nurses integrate their faith into their profession. She went on to serve as their continuing education director, but eventually began longing to return to the bedside. That led her to the Clinical Pastoral Education program at Wesley Medical Center, to the Master of Arts in Christian Ministry program at Friends, and to becoming a chaplain at Via Christi Rehabilitation Hospital.

“People come to the hospital scared and in a completely new environment. They lose their autonomy,” Snapp said. “The main hospitals’ chaplains are called to every code, trauma and death. When the helicopter comes in, the chaplains are paged. A lot of time the patients aren’t able to talk to you, but you minister to the families. It doesn’t matter where they are in their faith. Everyone needs a cup of coffee or someone to sit with them.” At the rehabilitation hospital, “patients are awake and the reality of their situation is dawning on them,” she said. “My aim is to bring hope and a caring presence – someone to listen and sometimes pray with them.” Coursework and fellow students in classes taught by Dr. Christian Kettler and other Friends University faculty provided a rich experience. “Who would think someone my age could be so challenged and still grow?” she said. “I believe God never wastes anything. I hope every day that God will use what I’m becoming.”

DIXIE SEBITS

An increasing number of people memoBy Hannah Pauls, junior

Dixie (Wallace) Sebits, whose name and legacy can be found across the Friends University campus, died Sept. 27, 2011, at the age of 95. Dixie attended Friends University in 1936 and 1941, and her presence was noticed. A longtime lover of dance, she raised administration’s eyebrows when she performed a soft-shoe tap routine in Alumni Auditorium at a time when dancing simply wasn’t allowed, and shared her passion with others by teaching dance in Wichita and the surrounding Dixie’s 1941 Talisman communities. Yearbook photo. She and Carl Sebits were married Sept. 14, 1941, and thus began the journey of a couple whose remarkable generosity is still felt today. When Carl was overseas with the Navy during World War II, Dixie served on the home front as an inspector for Cessna Aircraft in Hutchinson, Kan. Following his return and the birth of their son, David, Dixie stayed home to care for her family, but she never stopped caring for the community. She was active in Eastern Star, the Delta Rho Alumni Sorority and the Red Cross all the while taking in the cultural scene of Wichita’s art and music community. Her love of dance coupled with Carl’s love of jazz led the pair to be enthusiastic patrons of the Friends University ballet and jazz programs. Already longtime supporters of the University, in August 1997 the couple announced their decision to donate $3 million toward building and maintaining additions to the Riney Fine Arts Center (then Whittier Fine Arts Building) and the William Penn Science Hall. They recognized the high caliber ballet and jazz programs, and their inclusion of the science building was guided by their son David’s interest in that field. Also in 1997, Carl and Dixie were honored with the Outstanding Humanitarian Award from the Greater Wichita Chapter of the National Society of Fund Raising Executives for their dedicated leadership, civic responsibility and philanthropy to not only Friends University, but also The Salvation Army and many other organizations. Dixie’s dedication, love and passion will be missed, but her legacy remains in the campus additions that bear her name and in the hearts of countless students. She is survived by husband Carl, son David and wife Dixie Carol, three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. A memorial fund has been established in Dixie’s honor benefitting the Carl and Dixie Sebits Jazz/Ballet Endowed Scholarship. Contributions may be sent to the University Relations Office. Dixie and Carl Sebits say a few words of gratitude after the announcement in fall 2007 that the Alexander Auditorium had been renamed to Sebits Auditorium in their honor.

DR. KEN ANDREW

By Hannah Pauls, junior

Dr. Kenneth Andrew, G’40, died Dec. 13, 2011. He was a Friends University physics professor from 1942-59. Dr. Andrew is praised as a helpful professor, even lending his aid with graduate school applications. In the mid-1950’s he helped a handful of students build what may have been the world’s first analog to digital converter in the form of a kissing booth that debuted at Cherry Carnival. The FURIAC (Friends University Romantic Inclination Automatic Computer) pioneered technology that “is still used in many electronic devices such as cellular telephones and HD televisions,” said Dr. Jon Spijkerman, G’56. The FURIAC measured the intensity of electrical resistance when a man and woman each held one of a pair of electrodes, indicating the pair’s romantic inclination on a scale including frigid and ardent. As Dr. Spijkerman was from the Netherlands, “Ken not only corrected my physics and math exams, but also my English,” he said. “Classes were very informal but we learned a lot and I was admitted to graduate school with a full scholarship.” Dr. Andrew received the Friends University Distinguished Alumni Award in 1971. He recognized that creativity is an elemental part of science, following his passion and innate curiosity in a lifetime of exploration. He credited his interest in science as a continuation of his childhood curiosity. He was preceded in death by wife Lois. He is survived by two sons, one daughter, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and his companion of the last few years, Florence.

Max Hapner, G’52, died May 10, 2011. Beth Ellen (Gregg) Huston, G’09, died July 10, 2011.

Jeff Landgraf, FS’08, died April 18, 2011. April Long, FS’92, died June 17, 2011.

Alvin D. Kauffman, G’58, died Nov. 14, 2010. He was a pastor at Crystal Springs Mennonite Church in Crystal Springs, Kan. from 1956-64 and teacher from 195876. He is survived by wife Beulah, one sister, two daughters, one son, eight grandchildren and 13 greatgrandchildren.

Roy E. Martin, G’96, died Sept. 7, 2010.

Shirley M. (Richardson) Leslie, G’45, died May 3, 2011.

Ann Elizabeth (Voth) Ratliff, G’41, died June 3, 2011.

Debra A. (Sindorf) May, G’03, died April 21, 2011. James “Jim” L. Moore, G’94, died July 31, 2011. Steven Quattlebaum, FS’04, died April 8, 2011.

friends annual FUND YOUR GENEROSITY IS OVERWHELMING !

Phonathon Success Builds Each Year On behalf of Friends University, I would like to thank everyone who has helped make this the best-ever start to our Phonathon! This year is special for at least a handful of reasons, but the number one reason is most definitely all of you! The annual Phonathon program allows current students to call alumni and friends of the University for a few weeks each fall and spring. Students want to visit about your ties to the University, campus events and how you can support the University. This fall alone, we surpassed last year’s number of pledges and total dollars pledged – and we still have six weeks of calling left this spring! We have also seen an increase in the number of people making their first pledge of support to the University. This shows us that Friends University remains very important to many of you. You believe in what Friends University has done for you, and in return, you want to do something good for Friends University. For many years, we used a telemarketing company to make these calls. We brought the Phonathon back to campus almost four years ago, and we are excited that you can visit with one of our current students. Whether you decide to make a donation or not, the students really enjoy visiting with everyone. If you haven’t already talked with a student caller, you might still get that chance. Calling resumed near the end of January, so I would encourage you to share a story, find out a little bit about your caller, or ask about what’s going on around campus. The students are anxious to visit with you and can’t wait to tell you why they think it’s so great to be part of Friends University!

PLANNED giving GIVING THROUGH YOUR WILL OR TRUST “WE CANNOT ALWAYS BUILD THE FUTURE FOR OUR YOUTH, BUT WE CAN BUILD OUR YOUTH FOR THE FUTURE.” — FRANKLIN DELANO ROOSEVELT By Nancy Hinten, Director of Planned Giving

Next to writing a check, perhaps the best known planned giving vehicle is one that comes through a will or trust – making it possible for you to make your wishes known today without relinquishing needed assets during your lifetime. Here are some ways to make it happen:

A Fixed Bequest: This is the gift of a

fixed dollar amount to a family member, friend or charity such as Friends University.

Building Our Youth for the Future As much as we love the idea of controlling our destiny, the reality is that the future is uncertain. We all feel that uncertainty every time we read the newspaper or listen to the local news. What can we do? I think FDR nailed it: “We can build our youth for the future.” How do we accomplish that? Some say it takes a village. At Friends University, our mission statement says “provide a high-quality undergraduate and graduate education that incorporates liberal arts instruction and professional studies within the context of the Christian faith,” and that will put them on the right path. It works. You’re a living testament. Our mission hasn’t changed since you were last here. So we’re staying the course – building our youth for the future. Join the build. This year. (See note below.) Some of your fellow builders are listed in this issue’s Donor Report as Heritage Society members. We invite you to make the commitment. You may say you would like to make a commitment but don’t have the financial resources at this time. I understand. But what you may not realize is that you can be part of this effort by joining the Heritage Society, and not touching your current assets. (See examples in the article to the right.)

A Specified Percentage: Many people

divide their estate by percentages, leaving a specific percentage such as 10 percent or 20 percent to be divided among a named list.

A Gift of a Specific Asset: On some

occasions, gifts of a parcel of real estate, a block of stock or a life insurance policy help fulfill a desired objective.

A Residual Gift: Specific bequests are

often given to family members and the remainder of the estate is divided equally among a variety of charitable causes.

Gift in Trust: There are a number of

appropriate ways to leave a gift in trust. For example, a trust can provide a surviving family member with income for life, then provide the remainder to Friends University after the death of the surviving family member. Alternatively, a trust may provide income to Friends University for a prescribed number of years with the remainder ultimately going to a family member.

Another example of a gift that provides

you with income is the charitable gift annuity.

Of course we appreciate any gift that

is given to Friends. We are asking you to consider a gift of a lifetime, one that builds

Note: With the failure of the congressional “supercommittee” to reach a bipartisan solution, we will operate under the Bush tax-cut extension through the end of 2012. Your gifts are fully deductible this year, but that may not be the case in 2013. Congress is exploring ways to close the deficit with an increase in estate and gift taxes. (The 35-percent current estate rate could rise to 55 percent, and the estate cap could drop from $5.12 million to $1 million).

From its modest beginnings of just 41 students and two programs, the Friends University Graduate School has bloomed into a booming academic enterprise with more than 700 students in 12 master’s degree programs. As a pioneer in meeting the needs of adult learners, Friends University began offering its Master of Science in Family Therapy and Master of Science in Management in 1986. The University’s unique cohort format allows professional adults to meet once a week for 18-months to two years and earn graduate degrees, while still maintaining career and family obligations. “Students attend in a cohort group, staying with the same group of students throughout the coursework of the degree, thus building strong bonds that serve them well not only during their coursework, but often throughout their careers,” said Dr. Evelyn Hume, dean of the Graduate School. Throughout the past 25 years, the Graduate School has grown and evolved with the needs of its students and the community. For instance, the Master of Science in Management evolved into the Master of Global Leadership and Management in 2010. Dr. Hume said the Master of Business Administration has the largest enrollment, approximately 275 students, with the Master of Healthcare Leadership and the Master of Science in Family Therapy following close behind. “The Graduate School is very student-focused and always strives to provide the very best student service possible,” Dr. Hume said. At the inception of the University’s graduate degree programs in 1986, the master’s programs were lumped together with the University’s other academic offerings. It wasn’t until 2005, that the Graduate School was established and centrally located in the Olive White Garvey Business and Technology Building. Dr. Hume is only the third dean of the Graduate School. Dr. Al Saber, who was a driving force in establishing the Graduate School, was dean from 2005 to 2008. Dr. James Gearity served as interim dean from 2008 to 2009. And Dr. Hume began her leadership role in 2009. As the Graduate School continues to prosper, Dr. Hume says it has a couple goals in mind for the near future. “The Graduate School’s next big step is to begin considering doctoral degree programs, as well as adding additional master’s degrees,” she said.

Master of Science in Management becomes the Master of Science in Leadership and Management.
