HELEN WEAR LAIRD

Helen (Wear) Laird, G’27, celebrated her 102nd birthday in December. Immediately after graduation, Helen taught high school then later taught voice and piano. She and Jess Laird were married 60 years before he died in 1987. Jess played football and ran track while at Friends. They have two daughters, Connie and Loy, four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Helen was a church choir director for many years. In retirement, she has enjoyed winning blue ribbons for her pottery and devoting time to church by greeting parishioners. She resides in Clarksville, Tenn.

Michael Krogmann, G’01, has worked for the Round Rock, Texas, police department since 2003 and was promoted to patrol sergeant in June. Krogmann continues to serve in the U.S. Army Reserve and is also a human resources instructor.

Anne Baer, G’00/M’02, has accepted the position as director of outreach student services at the Allen Community College commuter campus in Burlingame, Kan. She also instructs on-ground and online computer and business courses.

Julianna Johnson, G’07, has joined Cox Media Kansas/Arkansas as a marketing administrative assistant.

Glen Averill, M’01, has launched two Web sites focusing on Christian joy and is writing an e-book on the same subject that will be published soon.

Brent Esplin, G’01, recently accepted a promotion at Provo Canyon School in Provo, Utah, to director of admissions.

Michelle Wilson, G’91, has become a certified fraud examiner.

Lt. Jeff Easter, G’07, was named Wichita Police Officer of the Year in October. Easter is commander of Wichita’s gang unit.

The Wichita Eagle recently published two travel articles by Jennifer Sparlin, G’93. “Keep an Eye on the Water” ran in September and “Snow Bunny” ran in November. Her poem titled “The Haunted Barn” was published in the Summer 2007 issue of The Midwest Quarterly. In addition, her poems “Three-Quarter Moon” and “All Hallows” were published in the Fall 2007 issue of the Canadian Children’s magazine Crow Toes Quarterly.

Randi (Snyder) Shetley, G’97, and husband Shane, FS’95, welcomed home son Tem from Ethiopia. Tem joins his biological sister, Megin, and new siblings Alexis, Tyson and Zion. Randi is a cast member at the World’s Largest Titanic Museum Attraction. Shane is working as a railman and assistant stage manager at The Mansion Entertainment and Media Center. The family resides in Branson, Mo.

Cristina (Beall) Seamster, G’96, recently became a distributor for MonaVie, a health drink.

Lonnie Myklebust, M’99, recently relocated to Gjovik, Norway, and is a full-time student at a Norwegian language and culture institute. Her husband, John, is employed as a rocket scientist for Naamo.

Shawn King, M’91, has completed his second master’s degree in social work, graduating with honors and cum laude and as a member of Phi Kappa Phi. In his second year as a Ph.D. student, King received the Hartford Pre-Dissertation Award, one of 20. He and his family have relocated to Chauncey, Ohio, where he works as a social worker supervisor in community mental health for the state of Ohio.

Kimberly Hynek, G’94, has been chosen as part of the inaugural leadership team for the American Association of Homes and Services for the Aging. The association is the leading professional organization for non-profit providers of aging services.

Carmen Conejo, G’98, retired in July after 36 years of government service. She plans to travel with husband Arthur then kick back and enjoy time with family and friends.

Dr. Toby Lee, G’03, received a doctorate of dental surgery from the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Dentistry in May 2007. Dr. Lee, wife Denai and daughter Robyn returned to Wichita where he practices dentistry with Dr. Robert H. Dakin Jr.
