FRENCH AMERICAN PIANO SOCIETY French-American Piano Society is a non-profit organization designed to promote cultural exchange, education, and networking between France and the United States through French pianists and music.

Founded in 2014 by Dr. Mathieu Petitjean, our Society provides scholarships for aspiring young French pianists to attend competitions and festivals in the United States, presents world renowned artists in recital, and endeavors to promote the activities of French pianists in America and American pianists dedicated to French piano music.

Over the past two years, we have raised $100,000 to acquire a concert Steinway that will be hosted at the Consulate of France in New York to revive the tradition of the “Salon Rose� as a music room.

Today we are delighted to inaugurate this magnificent piano and the New Year with a two-part recital by renowned pianists Lise de la Salle and Thomas Enhco. During the dinner, we will dedicate the piano to the memory of James J. Sheeran.

We are grateful to the many corporate sponsors and individual patrons who have offered their invaluable support, which makes our mission possible. Your continued presence at our side will guarantee our future progress.

LISE DE LA SALLE In just a few years, 29 year-old Lise de la Salle has established a reputation as one of today’s most exciting young artists and as a musician of uncommon sensibility and maturity. Her playing inspired a Washington Post critic to write, “For much of the concert, the audience had to remember to breathe… the exhilaration didn’t let up for a second until her hands came off the keyboard.”

A native of France, Ms. de la Salle first came to international attention at the age of 16, with a Bach/Liszt recording that Gramophone Magazine selected as “Recording of the Month.” Ms. de la Salle, who records for the Naïve label, was then similarly recognized in 2008 for her recording of the first concertos of Liszt, Prokofiev and Shostakovich.

Recent recordings offered works of Schumann and the Complete Works of Rachmaninoff for Piano and Orchestra with Fabio Luisi and the Philharmonia Zurich. The 2017 2018 season will see the release of her tenth CD, a Bach focused disc on Naïve including the Italian Concerto, the Liszt Fantasy & Fugue on the Theme B.A.C.H. Lise de la Salle has played with many of the world’s leading orchestras and conductors. She made her London Symphony Orchestra debut with Fabio Luisi and in 2016 returned to the orchestra with Antonio Pappano. Luisi, who invited her to become the first Artist-in-Residence of the Zurich Opera in 2014, has also frequently featured Ms. de la Salle with the Vienna Symphony, including a performance in New York on the Great Performers Series at Lincoln Center.

In 2003, Ms. de la Salle won the European Young Concert Artists Auditions in Paris, and in 2004 she won the Young Concert Artists International Auditions in New York.

THOMAS ENHCO Thomas Enhco is a French pianist and composer. Born in a family of musicians, he starts playing the violin and the piano as a child, with a classical and jazz training in both instruments, as well as composing. Thomas has released 7 albums and has been playing an average of 120 concerts per year around the world, both in classical and jazz venues and festivals.

His first album Esquisse (featuring drums-legend Peter Erskine) comes out in 2006. In 2009 the late great Japanese jazz producer Itoh “88” Yasohachi produces his 2 nd trio album Someday My Prince Will Come. In 2010, Thomas wins two major French awards : Django d’Or “New Talent” and 3 rd Grand Prize at Martial Solal International Jazz Piano Competition.

In 2013, his trio album Fireflies wins the Victoires du Jazz award. After signing with Universal Music, his solo piano album Feathers is released in 2015 on Verve Records and is nominated for "Best Album of the year". In 2016 the first album of his duet "Funambules" with Bulgarian percussionist Vassilena Serafimova comes out on legendary label Deutsche Grammophon. Together, they win 2 nd Grand Prize at Osaka International Chamber Music Competition in 2017.

Thomas Enhco has composed the original score for the movie Les Cinq Parties du Monde, for which he received the prestigious FIPA d’Or for Best Original Soundtrack in 2012.

While living in New York, he recorded a trio album in 2012 (Jack & John) with jazz giants Jack DeJohnette on drums and John Patitucci on bass. In 2017, he makes his debut as a soloist with symphony orchestras in classical concertos (Mozart, Gershwin, Bach, Ravel, Adams, Beethoven) as well as in his own first piano concerto.

James J. Sheeran (1923 - 2007)

A great American patriot, WWII Veteran, son of France, and Chevalier de la Legion d’honneur (2006) of the Republic of France Following is an excerpt of the address of Ambassador Jean-David Levitte at the Dinner celebration in the honor of James Sheeran on January 31, 2006, Washington, DC

“Dear Jimmy, Like hundreds of thousands of young Americans, you fought for the liberation of France during the Second World War. In 1942, at the age of 19, imbued with the ideals of freedom that the United States has always stood for, you decided to enlist in the now famous 101st Airborne.

But for you, dear Jimmy, this commitment to fight Nazi occupation had a deeper, much more personal meaning than for many of your comrades.

By enlisting in 1942, you were following in the footsteps of your father, John Sheeran, an Irish-American who fought the Germans in France during World War I, notably around Verdun.

By enlisting, you too were preparing to fight for the liberation of France, the birthplace of your mother, Lucie Munier-Sheeran, whom your father met during the war. She was an orphan, her parents and two brothers having perished under German fire. It was only when you told her of your decision to go to war that she revealed to you the secret of her war-torn childhood. She did not succeed in changing your mind. But to ensure your protection, she gave you a medal of Joan of Arc, which she asked you to Photo Morris wearbyatMark all times.

Beloved by the French, Joan of Arc is the maiden whom God had asked to free France from English domination during the 15th century, and who sacrificed her life to fulfill that destiny. For your mother, there was an additional connection: Joan of Arc came from the village of Domremy where she herself was born and married your father. Historians have even proven that her ancestors played with the young Joan of Arc. Thus protected by our national heroine, you left for England in August 1943.

After months of training, you were part of the avant-garde that on June 6, 1944, parachuted behind-or rather, in the middle of enemy lines in Normandy, near Sainte-Mere-l'Eglise.

The parachuting operation was much more difficult than expected. Your comrades were scattered in a swampy terrain. You fought bravely in a hedgerow full of Germans but were taken prisoner, deported first to Paris and then on to Germany.

Miraculously, you managed to escape, jumping off a moving train with four other companions. You thought you were in Germany but you were still in France, in the region of "les Ardennes," about 130 miles from the village where your mother was born.

With one of your companions, Bernie Rainwater, a Cherokee Indian from your regiment, you decided to move south, toward what you thought was the Swiss border.

In this region swarming with Germans, you had the good luck to meet with members of the French Resistance. For several days, Jean and Josette Boucher hid you in the room of their newborn baby. It was after this brave Josette Boucher that you named your daughter, Josette Sheeran.

With Bernie Rainwater, you then joined the Maquis and decided to fight with the French Resistance. You helped resistance members use American weapons left by Allied forces and led sabotage operations against the German occupying troops.

Separated from your new companions during a German attack, you set off toward the Swiss border. There, you discovered that all these peregrinations through still-occupied France took you just a few miles from Domremy, the village where your mother and Joan of Arc were born, the place where your parents were married.

It did not end with another marriage to a Frenchwoman but had a last, incredible twist. In Domremy, thanks to one of your mother's former teachers, who recognized you by the family resemblance, you were reunited with your Photo by Mark Morris mother's family.

That is when you met your young cousin, Lucette Gossot, who was then 4 years old and later became a French diplomat. I am very pleased she is with us tonight.

Her parents harbored you for more than a month in their house. They were very brave and saved your and Bernie's lives by hiding you when German troops searched the house after you were denounced.

You later caught up with the American army and returned to England.

Rather than returning to the United States, as invited to do, you decided to continue fighting with the 101st Airborne in the Netherlands and later in the terrible battle of Bastogne, where you demonstrated your bravery.

Severely injured, you returned to the United States where you later joined the FBI and then became mayor of West Orange, New Jersey, before serving in Governor Byrne's Cabinet.

But after your return to the U.S., you didn't forget France. You sent literally tons of clothes, toys and food to the very needy people of the Domremy region. They never forgot your great generosity.

This evening, I want to pay tribute to a great American patriot and to a Son of France”

2017 SCHOLARSHIP GRANTS Since our creation in 2014, we have awarded scholarships to 14 talented young French pianists who have since competed and won international competitions in the United States. The scholarship covers round-trip transportation from Paris, tuition fees for the International Keyboard Institute and Festival (IKIF), and housing during the two-week festival.

The 2018 Awards recipients will be announced in March and give their U.S. debut recital on July 19 at the Consulate of France in New York. On this occasion, they will be recognized with the Lalique Awards.
