Diam: 12 1/2 in. Weight: 36 troy oz. provenance: Descending for seven generations, in the family of Betty Washington Lewis, the sister of George Washington, this Philadelphia-made, engraved, silver washstand basin, has a long and interesting story to tell. Elizabeth or Betty Washington, born in 1733, married Col. Fielding Lewis (1725-1781) a lifelong friend of her brother George, officer in the Revolutionary War and prominent Virginian, in 1750. Together, they built the stately Georgian mansion, Kenmore Plantation in Fredericksburg, Virginia, which stands today as a National Historic Landmark. The couple had eleven children. Their youngest son, Howell Lewis (1771-1822) married Ellen Hackley Pollard in 1795. Ellen Pollard Lewis (1776-1855) is the first engraved name on the basin. Howell Lewis served at times as his uncle’s secretary, overseer of Mount Vernon while his uncle George Washington, was President. In 1818, the daughter of Ellen Pollard and Howell Lewis, Betty Washington Lewis (1796-1866) married Col. Joseph Lovell (1796-1835) and lived in Charlestown, West Virginia. As a very small child Betty Washington Lewis visited George and Martha Washington at Mt. Vernon and had the special honor of sitting at the “adult table,” an invitation not typically extended to children at the time. Little Betty also is said to have sat on Washington’s knee a few months before his death. Betty Washington Lewis Lovell passed away in Marietta, Ohio. Betty Washington Lewis and Col. Joseph Lovell had one child, Joseph Lovell, Jr.(1827-1865) His marriage to Sara Nye (1829-1934) produced Betty

Washington Lovell (1853 - 1934) the third engraved name on the bowl. Betty Lovell married Frances Fox Oldham (1849-1912) in 1876. The fourth engraved name, the child of Betty Washington Lovell and Francis Fox Oldham, Frances Fielding Oldham was born in 1889 in Ohio. By the age of eleven she was living in Washington D.C. She is known to have worked as a Licensed Nurse at Presbyterian Hospital on the upper west side of New York City circa 1915. The fifth engraved name, Frances Lovell Oldham, was born in Seattle, Washington. Best known as an editor of Harper’s Bazaar and later fashion editor at Vogue in the UK, Frances Lovell Oldham (1903-1991) was originally married to the Hon. James Rodney. Frances Rodney later divorced and married Captain Charles Gordon, with whom she had a daughter, Marybelle Gordon. Frances later married Captain Alwyne Farquharson of Invercauld. As Frances Farquharson of Invercauld, she was best known for her fashionable and unique taste in both clothing and castle décor at Braemar Castle, so much so that the castle was opened for a period of time as a visitor attraction. On June 24, 1961, Marybelle Gordon, daughter of Captain Charles Gordon and Frances Lovell Oldham, married the Hon. James Reginald Drummond, son of John David Drummond, 17th Earl of Perth. 203 Lithgow Family silver hilted smallsword andrew tyler (1692-1741), boston, 1720-1740 Tyler’s mark stamped twice, on quillon and knucklebow, the undersides of shells engraved with the initials, “RL” for Robert Lithgow and the date “1701” and “Capt. Wm. Lithgow,” the blade etched with full figure of an Indian and scrollwork. L: 33 in. provenance: According to family tradition, the first owner of the sword, Robert Lithgow, was born 1678 in Glendermoth, Ireland. He emigrated to Halifax, Nova Scotia, then to Boston. He settled in Topsham Maine around 1720 and fled to Brunswick when the town was attacked by Indians. He later settled in Georgetown, Maine. The second owner of the sword was Robert’s son William Lithgow (1713? -1798) who was born in Boston. Known as Captain William Lithgow, he commanded Ft. Richmond and later Ft. Halifax and was employed as an Indian agent by the government from about 1754-1774. It has been suggested that the Indian figure on the blade was etched at this time. In later life, Lithgow became a Judge. The third owner of the sword was William Lithgow, Jr. (1750-1796) who served as Captain of the Massachusetts Militia, and entered the army as a Major of the 11th Massachusetts Regiment. 204 Attributed to George Engleheart (British, 1750-1829) miniature portrait of sir alexander forrester inglis cochrane (1758-1832) Watercolor on ivory, gilt metal locket frame, not examined out of frame. 3 1/6 in. x 2 1/2 in. provenance: Descended in the Cochrane family to the present owner. Alexander Cochrane played a significant role in the War of 1812. As Vice Admiral of the British Expeditionary Fleet and Commander in Chief of North American Station, Cochrane orchestrated the effective blockade of American ports. His ships brought many of the British troops that captured Washington D.C., burned the White House and most of the other government buildings. Perhaps Cochrane’s most famous act in the War was leading the attack on the key port of Baltimore, Maryland. Under Cochrane’s command, the British Navy bombarded Fort McHenry in Baltimore Harbor for 25 hours. The bombardment inspired observer, Francis Scott Key to write “The Star Spangled Banner” which became our national anthem. In January of 1815, Cochrane’s ships delivered many British soldiers to one of the last events of the War, The Battle of New Orleans, where they were defeated by Americans under the command of Gen. Andrew Jackson. $20,000-30,000

211 Edward Ashton Goodes (1832-1910) portrait of rear admiral samuel francis du pont(1803-1865) Signed, “ E. A. Goodes, Dec. 12th 1887”, oil on canvas, framed. provenance: DuPont served with distinction as a naval officer in the Mexican War and was active in the establishment of the Naval Academy at Annapolis. At the outbreak of the Civil War DuPont was appointed to the Commission of Conference to plan Northern naval operations. He was given command of the South Atlantic Blockading Squadron and his capture of Port Royal, South Carolina in November of 1861 was the first major Union naval victory of the war. This victory inspired Herman Melville to write “DuPont’s Round Fight,” a poem. In 1863, however, DuPont was blaimed for the worst naval defeat of the war when his fleet of ironclads failed to take Charleston. He asked to be relived of his command and died two years later. In 1882, Congress recognized Du Pont’s naval service and commissioned a statue of him to be placed in the renamed DuPont Circle in Washington, D.C. The Dupont family later replaced the statue with a fountain. This portrait was painted from a photograph of the Rear Admiral, taken in October of 1862. DuPont’s papers are kept at the Hagley Museum $3,000-5,000

Buyer thereupon assumes full risk and responsibility of the property sold, agrees to sign any requested confirmation of purchase, and agrees to pay the full price, plus Buyer’s Premium, therefore or such part, upon such terms as Freeman’s may require. 9 No lot may be removed from Freeman’s premises until the buyer has paid in full the purchase price therefor including

Buyer’s Premium or has satisfied such terms that Freeman’s, in its sole discretion, shall require. Subject to the foregoing, all Property shall be paid for and removed by the buyer at his/her expense within ten (10) days of sale and, if not so removed, may be sold by Freeman’s, or sent by Freeman’s to a public warehouse, at the sole risk and charge of the buyer(s), and Freeman’s may prohibit the buyer from participating, directly or indirectly, as a bidder or buyer in any future sale or sales. In addition to other remedies available to Freeman’s by law, Freeman’s reserves the right to impose a late charge of 1.5% per month of the total purchase price on any balance remaining ten (10) days after the day of sale. If Property is not removed by the buyer within ten (10) days, a handling charge of .1% of the total purchase price per month from the tenth day after the sale until removal by the buyer shall be payable to Freeman’s by the buyer; Freeman’s shall charge 1.5% of the total purchase price per month for any property not so removed within 60 days after the sale. Freeman’s will not be responsible for any loss, damage, theft, or otherwise responsible for any goods left in Freeman’s possession after ten (10) days. If the foregoing conditions or any applicable provisions of law are not complied with, in addition to other remedies available to Freeman’s and the Consignor (including without limitation the right to hold the buyer(s) liable for the bid price) Freeman’s, at its option, may either cancel the sale, retaining as liquidated damages all payments made by the buyer(s), or resell the property. In such event, the buyer(s) shall remain liable for any deficiency in the original purchase price and will also be responsible for all costs, including warehousing, the expense of the ultimate sale, and Freeman’s commission at its regular rates together with all related and incidental charges, including legal fees. Payment is a precondition to removal. Payment shall be by cash, certified check or similar bank draft, or any other method approved by Freeman’s. Checks will not be deemed to constitute payment until cleared. Any exceptions must be made upon Freeman’s written approval of credit prior to sale. In addition, a defaulting buyer will be deemed to have granted and assigned to Freeman’s, a continuing security interest of first priority in any property or money of, or owing to such buyer in Freeman’s possession, and Freeman’s may retain and apply such property or money as collateral security for the obligations due to due to Freeman’s. Freeman’s shall have all of the rights accorded a secured party under the Pennsylvania Uniform Commercial Code. 10 Unless the sale is advertised and announced as “without reserve”, each lot is offered subject to a reserve and Freeman’s may implement such reserves by bidding through its representatives on behalf of the Consignors. In certain

instances, the Consignor may pay less than the standard commission rate where Freeman’s or its representative is a successful bidder on behalf of the Consignor. Where the Consignor is indebted to Freeman’s, Freeman’s may have an interest in the offered lots and the proceeds therefrom, other than the broker’s Commissions, and all sales are subject to any such interest. 11 No “buy” bids shall be accepted at any time for any purpose. 12 Any pre-sale bids must be submitted in writing to Freeman’s prior to commencement of the offer of the first lot of any sale. Freeman’s copy of any such bid shall conclusively be deemed to be the sole evidence of same, and while Freeman’s accepts these bids for the convenience of bidders not present at the auction, Freeman’s shall not be responsible for the failure to execute, or, to execute properly, any pre-sale bid. 13 A Buyer’s Premium will be added to the successful bid price and is payable by the buyer as part of the total purchase price. The Buyer’s Premium shall be: 25% on the first $20,000 of the hammer price of each lot, 20% on the portion from $20,001 through $500,000, and 12% on the portion of the hammer price exceeding $500,000. 14 Unless exempted by law from the payment thereof, the buyer will be required to pay any and all federal excise tax and any state and/or local sales taxes, including where deliveries are to be made outside the state where a sale is conducted, which may be subject to a corresponding or compensating tax in another state. 15 Freeman’s may, as a service to buyer arrange to have purchased property posted and shipped at the buyer’s expense. Freeman’s is not responsible for any acts or omissions in packing or shipping of purchased lots whether or not such carrier recommended by Freeman’s. Packing and handling of purchased lots is at the responsibility of the buyer and is at the entire risk of the buyer.

16 In no event shall any liability of Freeman’s to the buyer exceed the purchase price actually paid. 17 No claimed modification or amendment of this Agreement on the part of any party shall be deemed extant, enforceable or provable unless it is in writing that has been signed by the parties to this Agreement. No course of dealing and no delay or omission on the part of Freeman’s in exercising any right under this Agreement shall operate as a waiver of such right or any other right and waiver on any one or more occasions shall not be construed as a bar to or waiver of any right or remedy of Freeman’s on any future occasion. 18 These Conditions of Sale and the buyer’s, the Consignor's and Freeman’s rights under these Conditions of Sale shall be governed by, construed and enforced in accordance with the laws of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and Consignor and Buyer agree to the exclusive jurisdiction of the Philadelphia, Pennsylvania Court of Common Pleas and the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania.
