Ryan Rogers has been a commercial fisherman and a Lane County business owner for over thirty years. This unique experience, combined with the time he has spent as the owner of the popular seafood restaurant and fish market in Eugene known as the Fisherman’s Market, seem to have endowed him with a special ability to sense fair weather on the horizon. Whether it is sensing fair-weather while out at sea or the calm moments in the ebb and flow of economic tides, Ryan has done both. Most recently, Ryan opened a second Fisherman’s Market location at PublicHouse, in Springfield. Those familiar with the Eugene market know that it is a markedly busy place. The restaurant portion offers an array of fish n’ chips ensembles today, its menu is also stacked with options for fish tacos and seafood -infused soups and sandwiches. Take-home items labeled under the market’s own Fisherman’s Kitchen brand include take-and-bake entrees like Lobster Mac N’ Cheese, canned fish as they ought to be (smoked Chinook salmon, Silver Co-Ho salmon, and albacore tuna, respectively), and easyto-cook Cajun crab Boil Bags. In a recent interview, Ryan told Free For All News that he grew up in Eugene. It just so happened that he followed his brothers north—way north—into the fishing life. “My brothers were all involved in fisheries here in Oregon in the 70s,” Ryan shared. “My eldest brother went to Alaska in the late 70s and [my other brothers] all followed him up. The first time I went up there was in 1979, I think. I’ve spent every summer in Alaska ever since.” After crabbing and fishing for salmon all over Alaskan waters, Ryan started thinking he should reconsider his employment options in his midthirties after the birth of his and his wife’s first child: a son. Suddenly, facing the Bering Sea during the winter did not seem like a rightful

place for a man to be working that was a new father and had a family in Oregon back home. Ryan purchased it in 1989 with lifelong friend, Mike West, who has since passed. In those early days, the market did not include a restaurant, but contracting with location fishermen along the Oregon coast made it possible to add it to business operations. Speaking of these partnerships, Ryan commended the expertise belonging to the Oregon fishing industry, specifically, the ability of those working within it to procure, preserve, and deliver quality seafood. Before the Fisherman’s Market was invited to join the eatery and brew house hub at PublicHouse earlier this year, Ryan admitted that he had been considering opening a second location in Springfield for the last six years. With the help of the Eugene market’s trusted core staff, the Springfield venue was prepared and ready to open in the span of just a few weeks. Officially, the Fisherman’s Market at PublicHouse opened to serve the public proper this summer in June. Rob K., the company’s general manager, said the new venue will primarily focus on its restaurant operations, although a limited selection of Fisherman’s Kitchen take-home dishes, sauces, and canned fish will also be available for sale. “The other vendors are all really fun to work with,” Ryan said about PublicHouse restaurant collaborative. “We’ve always practiced and taught teamwork at Fisherman’s Market; so, it’s pretty neat seeing six businesses come together… We’re not competitors [at PublicHouse]; we’re just part of the team.” —Sarah Glass

Acknowledged by many locals as the part-time entertainment venue for which South Lane County has been in need, the brewery’s large front patio, as well as its spacious beer garden out back, make it a place where social-distancing and social activities can safely occur. “We weren’t originally going to do much live music and that sort of thing,” said Nate, “but once we saw that it was kind of needed—and that we would have such a huge outdoor beer garden—we ended up building a stage… So, we put in an outdoor stage. That’s what a lot of the bands were saying [was] what we sort of need right here as far as being able to get out and play. Because nobody was allowing anybody to play indoors… but since we got an outdoor stage, we were able to draw some crowds.” Because Covered Bridge Brewing Group opened in 2020, it has faced start-up difficulties heretofore unprecedented within the Lane County small business community. Officially, the brewery opened its doors in June of 2020. This was after the world acknowledged the COVID-19 pandemic in February of 2020 and after the brewery’s owners realized they would not receive the same government assistance as businesses that had been established before 2020. It was also after Oregon Governor Kate Brown declared a state of emergency, then a stay-at-home order, in March. Only once Lane County met the criteria necessary to enter Phase Two of the state’s reopening plan in June of 2020, only then was Covered Bridge Brewing Group finally able to officially introduce itself to the public. And yet, the Cottage Grove coffee house and brewery have persisted despite the difficulties. With the community in mind, it has pressed onward. Upon receiving the Mayoral Certificate of Appreciation from the Cottage Grove mayor in January of this year, Covered Bridge Brewing Group shared the following message on its Facebook page: “It is our passion to provide a safe space for this great community to come together and enjoy themselves. In these trying times, it is more important than ever to have a sense of community.” The Covered Bridge Brewing Group continues to strive in its fulfillment of that mission, and that is why Free For All News has selected to recognize this perseverant small business as our feature 2021 Rural Gem. —Free For All News

Live Events Return to Lane County

The live music and entertainment scene in Lane County seems to be making a comeback, and at some establishments, stronger than ever. If you choose to attend such an event—whether it be a live concert, trivia contest, lecture, jam session, or whatever it might be—remember to try and live a little! You deserve it! And be safe. Music especially has the power to heal the soul and make your toes tap with joy. Sometimes, community experiences can be just the sort of “bridge” we need to get over troubled waters and doldrum days.

Paintball fans should also mark this New Year’s weekend on their calendars, as Diamond Hill Paintball (DHP)—located just off of I-5, Exit 209, near Harrisburg—will be hosting its annual charity event to bring in the new year! The entry fee to participate in the charity event is $37 per person, and 50 percent of all proceeds will be donated to a charity yet to be named. This October, DHP also hosted its first tournament event in almost seven years! Taking first place at the tournament was the team, Los Jefes; second place went to One Shot Mafia, and Oregon Landslide came in at third place. And pardon the self-promotion, but also of note: Diamond Hill Paintball recently named one of its fields the “Free For All News” field.. Sponsoring this field while getting the publication’s name out to our neighbors to the north is an accomplishment that brings a little pride. and it still has two fields with naming rights available—including its home team’s tournament field! These prestigious naming rights last for a year or longer and even come with a reasonable price tag. Interested persons can contact the venue’s owner, Audrey, at 541-285-0073. To view the paintball fields and upcoming events that DHP has to offer, you can also go online to www.diamondhillpaintball.com/. —Free For All News

CrosScan is a word search/crossword puzzle hybrid. A CrosScan puzzle consists of a letter block and a list of clues. Answers to the clues are found in the letter block. Each puzzle has a theme, and every answer fits into this theme. When all the words are found and circled, the leftover letters spell out a short quote relating to the theme. For maximum enjoyment, we strongly recommend that you read the instructions be fore beginning.

1.

Visually scan the letter block to discover words. Words can be read backward, forward, up, down, or diagonally. It’s a good idea to look for diagonal words first. NOTE: DO NOT start with Clue #1, #2, etc. That is the hard way. 2. When you find a word, count the number of letters. Then, look at the word list and find the clues which have that same number indicated in parentheses. 3. Determine which clue corresponds to the word you found. Once you have located the clue, write the matching word in the blank space provided to the right of it for future reference. Do not circle a word in the letter block if you can’t find a clue to match it. HINT: Each puzzle contains a “star” in which words coming from all eight directions meet at one central letter.

4.

When all the words are found and circled, the unused letters leftover in the letter block spell out a short quote relating to the theme.

Professor Popinjay’s Podium

13

Professor Popinjay’s Podium Julie LaRoux asks: Professor Popinjay, If the humidity in a river is 100% and the humidity when it’s raining is 100%, then why can’t I swim up through the air when it’s raining? Sorry to burst your hot air balloon, but there is a difference between Absolute Humidity, Relative Humidity, and Perceptible Water. Absolute Humidity is, of course, what you'll find inside a bottle of Absolut Vodka. Relative Humidity is what drips off of your uncle who was drinking said vodka in 100-degree weather. Perceptible Water is when he throws said bottle at your head and you duck just in time. Speaking of ducks, 100% RELATIVE humidity does not mean a 100% chance of rain and wet ducks. It simply means, at the current temperature, no more moisture can enter the air without a signed permission slip, and it has to stay in your moat, catacomb, or oubliette (wherever you usually keep it). As you are likely aware, most humans are pretty dense in a variety of ways. However, water tends to be denser than the majority of humans, with only a few exceptions: namely, Danny DeVito (who is amazingly compact as humans go). This means, so long as we are fiercely dog-paddling like a terrified Xoloitzcuintli, we can easily flip and frolic about the waves with the best of the little mermaids. Any more dense than that, and we sink like a stone statue while getting exploded by overly-protective, tridentwielding merfathers. It's a harsh life under the sea. Air, on the other hand (yes, even super-fat air bloated with water vapor) is nowhere near as dense as we. According to singer/songwriter/television judge, Katy Perry, you have to be a plastic bag to drift through the wind Last I checked, my plastic grocery bag didn't come with a variety of fins and limbs to help propel it through the air in whatever direction pleased it, nor was it able to keep itself aloft. In fact, most plastic bags are completely inanimate, which is a major hindrance to their swimming ability. "But Professor", I hear you say via tiny microphones hidden in your

Trash-n-Treasure Antiques & Collectibles

home, "Some birds are fully animated by non-magical means, and they're also quite dense! How is it they swim in the air?" First of all, flying is not swimming, sort of. Birds diligently maintain a highly disciplined weight -loss regime through Jenny Craig and adhere to an extremely sleek and streamlined fashion sense. When was the last time you saw a bird wearing an infinity scarf and bellbottoms? Never, that's when! Also, thanks to great aeronautic pioneers such as Archimedes, Leonardo DiCaprio, the Montgolfiers, Laurel and Hardy Wright, Howard Hughes, and Peter Pan, birds now have a unique knowledge of how to increase both lift and thrust, these being two of the sexier laws of aerodynamics in my personal opinion. Do you know how to lift and thrust in such a way as to propel yourself through the air? I didn't think so. Newton's Third Law of Locomotives states: "You push me, I push you!" It's rather juvenile, really, and an uncivilized way to behave, but there you have it. Those who abide by this law know how to fly. Those who don't are picking fights with entities outside their weight class (specifically, Earth's gravity, which has been called both a bully and a harsh mistress). On average, the ocean of Earth is about 2.3 miles deep. The water pressure at the bottom of the Mariana Trench comes to a whopping 16,000 PSI, which can easily crush your yellow submarine into the size and shape of a Hostess Twinkie, except with you as the cream filling! To magically change all the air in that space into water would mean you, your friends, all of your pet hamsters, and the rest of your neighborhood would be virtually squeezed out of existence by 141,746.88 pounds of pressure per square inch. For comparison, that’s slightly heavier than the amount of bacon your mom eats on any given morning. So just to recap, the reason you can’t “swim” in the air is that you’re too-dense, too-weak air isn’t water, and changing any of this would spell doom for us all. Despite all this, far be it from me to leave you discouraged. As always, necessity is the mother of invention, regardless of how much bacon she eats. Follow your dreams, and I’m sure you’ll be lifting and thrusting in no time. If Wonder Woman can do it, so can you. I’ll leave you with the immortal words of Hitchhiker Guide to the Galaxy author, the late and great Douglas Adams, who writes in regards to flying, “The knack lies in learning to throw yourself at the ground and miss.” Happy flying! —Your friend, Professor Popinjay Like, Share, Join the Professor Popinjay Group on FB.
