Woes of the True Policeman I enjoyed this a great deal. It's not his best, but certainly better than Third Reich. Interesting as an addendum to 2666, though not essential. Some people have called it the sixth book of that great novel, but it's really not. Still worth it, though. A great expansion on the Amalfitano character. The only real knock is that it ends rather suddenly, as posthumously published works often do, and left me with a sense of the story being not quite complete and I really felt like it deserved a better sense of closure.

Trespasser When writers like C.J. Box, Tess Gerritsen and Andre Dubus III laud a debut, I sit up and take notice. But I've read all too many writers who have one book in the chamber, and that's all she wrote. Not Paul Doiron. TRESPASSER, his sophomore effort after last year's THE POACHER'S SON (which was nominated for pretty much every major crime fiction award extant), proclaims him a writer to watch.

Thieves' Quarry

THIEVES' QUARRY starts off quickly with our intrepid thieftaker Ethan Kaille finding himself tasked with investigating the deaths of everyone onboard one of King George III's Royal Navy vessels. The pre-Revolutionary War time period alone would make the stakes for this case incredibly high, but with the additional threat of having every conjurer in the city hanged if he fails the stakes are even higher for Ethan. This isn't going to be an easy case and Ethan is going to need the help of every friend and spell he has in order to solve it.

The Paragon Prison (Grey Griffins: The Clockwork Chronicles) This is everything and more the Grey Griffins are growing up in this series. And it only gets better in this book. A book for all ages. I cant wait to see if the Grey Griffins will be united again and when.

The Other Normals I don't know what to say about this amazing book that I have read over 2 days that's how good it is. I highly recommend it to mature readers who are looking for something confusing but interesting.

The Midnight Heir The only real problem I had with the story is that I felt like it wasn't as much a Magnus story as it was a preview for TLH, which is the sequel to TID. As with the Clockwork Princess epilogue, where you have to wait for the City of Heavenly Fire to figure out what really happened, I was left feeling like I have to read TLH to really understand this story. The other Bane Chronicle stories have been able to stand on their own and I hope the next few stories in the series will go back to that.

The Loch Ness Legacy I was very curious when I found out the newest adventure was about the Loch Ness monster I could not wait to read Boyd's take on the subject & as always with him he did not disappoint! Very unexpected and surprising twists with murder, a prison break, revenge & a race for the cure for a deadly poisoning with one of the very best endings you will not see coming. I very highly recommend you read this one for yourself, oh and good luck putting this read down once you start!

The Last Banquet The Last Banquet is not your usual story of a French aristocrat growing up and growing old in the 18th century. It is the story of a man and his love of food. I really enjoyed how Mr. Grimwood made Jean-Marie discover new tastes in the strangest places. This sometimes made me laugh out loud.

The House We Grew Up In All four children have an idyllic childhood: a picture-book cottage in a country village, a warm, cosy kitchen filled with love and laughter, sun-drenched afternoons in a rambling garden. But one Easter weekend a tragedy strikes the Bird family that is so devastating that, almost imperceptibly, it begins to tear them apart.

The Harp and the Blade Finnian waited alert, ready to kill if the wizard voiced a curse, but he only looked hard and said: ―From now on, as long as you stay in my land, you will aid any man or woman in need of help.‖

The Good the Bad and the Infernal The story itself is just, well, fun but also intriguing. Part western, part steampunk, part fantasy, part philosophy and part mystery, it pulled me along because I had to know what lay ahead. I want to know what these people are looking for (some I know, but others...) and I want to know what they'll find.

The Goliath Stone Doctor Toby Glyer has effected miracle cures with the use of nanotechnology. But Glyer’s controversial nanites are more than just the latest technological advance, they are a new form of life and they have more uses than just medical. Glyer’s nanites also have the potential to make everyone on Earth rich from the wealth of asteroids.

Twenty-five years ago, the Briareus mission took nanomachinery out to divert an Earth-crossing asteroid and bring it back to be mined, only to drop out of contact as soon as it reached its target. The project was shut down and the technology was forcibly suppressed.

The Girl Who Was Supposed to Die A very entertaining short read. Had never read a YA thriller before but I really enjoyed it. I like the fact I can pick it up and finish it in a couple of hours when I have nothing else to do. If its one thing I hate, its having to put a good book aside in order to do something else! Really connected with the characters, especially Ty. He's the type of teenage boy you wouldn't mind seeing your daughter get involved with! I was totally able to empathize with Cady as well and what she was going through. Well done!

The First Bird The search for said cure takes Kearns to the unexplored jungles of South America, and a mysterious lost tribe that may hold the key to defeating the pandemic. As always, Beck has a deft eye for action scenes and cryptozoological wonders. Part 2 can't get here soon enough.

The Deepest Night Summer holiday is coming to Iverson, the school Lora attends as a charity student. The headmistress must close the campus and has no word about what to do with Lora, since Lora is an orphan with no place to go. Lora tries several different places and positions, but none are the best fit. But 1915 is in the height of England's involvement with World War I. Lora and a young male drakon become involved in a rescue mission in German territory. Even in friendlier territory, they are not accepted well when they happen to be in dragon form, and the niceties of the time cause problems when they are seen together in human form.

The Crimson Shield I have been Truesword to my friends, Griefbringer to my enemies. To most of you I am just another Northlander bastard here to take your women and drink your mead, but to those who know me, my name is Gallow. I fought for my king for seven long years. I have served lords and held my shield beside common men. I have fled in defeat and I have tasted victory and I will tell you which is sweeter. Despise me then, for I have slain more of your kin than I can count, though I remember every single face.

The Bridge If your goal is to have just enough medicine and food for all you will never have peace. People will always want more than "just enough". If your goal is to quash the other side down enough that they will accept their lot and just be happy with what you've given them and leave you alone, you will not have peace. People will always rise against oppression and want total freedom. An intriguing read! The ending is left as being rather open. A sequel could arise easily from this. However, the ending also suits to letting the reader imagine what would happen next and I hope the author leaves the story as is. Trilogies are becoming so blase in YA fiction these days.

Taste Ava's back & the fight just keeps getting bigger! War is on the way to destroy the little bit of peace that Ava had scratched out for herself with Peter & Emmette. Ava & her friends have an army of beasts to fight & they are unsure about who they can trust. Lots of excitement, action & a little romance. Can't wait for book 6, but sad that it will be the last book in the series, as Ava is such a great lead character, one of my all time favourites!

SYLO The government has issued a lock-down and SYLO is there to help. That's what's being said anyway. But when people get locked up for asking questions, it's SYLO that starts becoming feared. Tucker sets out to find out what's really going on with SYLO, the outside world, and this stuff called Ruby that's being passed around behind closed doors. Just when you think he's getting close, more and more questions arise.

Son of a Mermaid The writing is spectacular, moving you from paragraph to paragraph with ease. The editing is outstanding. I would recommend this novel to any parent or teen looking for a delightful fairy-tale-like novel. In fact, I shall purchase a copy for my grandson. Thanks to the author for allowing me to read Son of a Mermaid.

Skinner

This is a definite change from Huston's other books in theme and characters. There is more philosophizing, which makes it slow down in parts, but never to the point that you want to skip a single word. Plus there's always awesome action on its way. The real treat is the relationship between Skinner and Jae, two disturbed folks you can almost totally mostly kinda emphasize with.

Romulus Buckle & the City of the Founders If the first 60 pages took me a week, the rest of the book took a few hours. It was a whole lot of fun, and one that I will actually recommend to some people. The rest of the book, if you enjoy that sort of thing, does make up for the first part. I will be getting the next book to read. There are questions enough for a series, but it doesn't end off with a cliffhanger.

Ring In the Dead There are a lot of prolific writers, but very few can continually create great such highly readable tales.J.P. may be getting older but he is getting to be a member of the family.

Right of Way The way this book was written is fantastic and unusual, it would jump from past to present, but also with the point of views from both Jace and Peyton. With each chapter I had to keep reading to see where the other character was up to and to see if Peyton would face her fears. I haven't read Two-Way Street and felt a little confused to begin with, but once I got into the story, that didn't matter. Right of Way was a great read and I can't wait to pick up another Lauren Barnholdt book.

Reunion: A Supernatural Thriller I gave this book a five and rarely rate a book that high. Bennington doesn't bore you with details that are not needed. If he tells you something remember it because it will come back into play later. Again, this is a great book. Reunion will keep you on your toes and it definitely grabs your attention from the beginning.

Quarantine #2: The Saints This is not a series for younger students or those who can't handle a very violent story. It is for the more "adult" range of young adults. Gates' character was probably the most disturbing in the entire story, even more so than the sadistic Sam, because he appeared to have it all together. I loved the dismantling of the Loners and how that affected everyone differently. But don't forget, this is one seriously disturbing series! If you liked Grant's Gone series, this is your next move. If you couldn't handle Gone, then this is not a series you want to start!

Meridian Six Meridian Six escaped the vampires - barely. Her sanctuary with the Sisters of Crimson is (very) short-lived. Meridian gains a little bit of hope and purpose. She refuses to go back, but isn't fully accepted by the rebels.

Massacre Pond

The only point I would make about Doiron's portrayal of the warden service is they are not destitute. The average warden doesn't live in a ramshackle trailer or broken down camp. They make a respectable living as is deserved for the job they perform.

His Clockwork Canary: The Glorious Victorious Darcys This is another wonderful book that I wish I had read the first book! So again this review will be updated as soon as I snag a copy! Anyway this one I fell in love with the cover first! This book has a wonderful steampunk romance with unique world building and very interesting characters. Although I didnt read the first book or the novella that I found out was out there this one I really did enjoy reading on its own. This was a very fast paced story with characters who had been introduced previously. I cant wait to see where Ciotta takes us next!

Harder We Fade Thank you for giving us a little more of OliviMax . Loved their love story!!!!! Hope to read more books like this.

Gemini Rising (Carina) Gemini Rising was an unexpected and thrilling read. Even though GR is set in the UK, the "high school" issues are universal. Sorana isn't part of the popular group but she is content with her life with her two besties. That is until the twins, Elyse and Melanie, swoop into Sorana's life flipping it upside down.

First Sight Timmie O'Neill is independent and a gorgeous woman..Rich, famous, Fashion Designer and Entrepreneur..Who just lands in France to get ready for her fashion show...Now if you can get past the first two chapters, where she sounds maybe a little full of herself..You will see that there is so much more to her character...An underlying reason she has a tough exterior that just won't crack..But can a visit from married, Docteur Jean-Charles Vernier for her emergency, ruptured appendicitis change all that..What about boyfriend Zak who waits patiently back in LA.......

Ex-Communication This book feels more personal and close-up than the Ex-Patriots and recaptures some of the raw scrabble for life of the original Ex-Heroes and yet still has time to dance around the meaning of religious symbolism as well as what it means to be alive within the frames of the characters' natural feeling dialogues. Those are the kind of conversations one would imagine in a world torn apart, where the few quiet moments get filled with the noise of contemplation.

Escaping Reality (The Secret Life of Amy Bensen) Liam Stone is bossy, mysterious, and sex-on-a-stick. His charisma jumps off the page and makes you want to do naughty things to him. You're probably going to need a cold shower at some point during this book because he will light you up like it's the 4th of July. But, Liam just isn't sex-on-a-stick. The man has his own secrets and is a bit dark and mysterious. Just when you think you've figured him out - WHAMO - you get knocked for the mother of all loops!

Deadly Forecast: A Psychic Eye Mystery

I absolutely love this series! I happened upon Abby Cooper when I was looking for a great read, I have been hooked ever since. I am so glad I took a chance on Victoria Laurie, I have no regrets! The Ghost Hunter series is just as awesome, MJ Holliday is another fantastic character, if you have never tried that series I highly recommend reading them.

Chilled to the Bone I do sometimes become a little muddled by the long, and quite strange looking Icelandic names of the character - but of course, for realism, they have to be included, and as the story progresses the reader does get to know the lead players very well. A fast-paced crime novel, with great characters, a clever plot and a smattering of humour. Bring on the next instalment!

Blood of Elves Undeniably feeling as rich and unique as the first book. A different approach on Geralt's world at a time of change, consequences, thought and decision.

The Widow's Strike: A Pike Logan Thriller The Widow's Strike follows the formula that drove the earlier Pike Logan novels: Pike's Taskforce team is sent on a mission with strict orders not to interfere with the target or do anything conspicuous Pike decides the orders aren't useful and disregards them in favor of action Pike's team prevents a worldwide catastrophe. It's a reliable formula, and while it might get old at some point, Taylor uses here with predictable but fun results.

Wicked Bronze Ambition: A Garrett, P.I., Novel There is a great scene in the book, where one of the harridans who lives on Garrett's home street castigates him for bring trouble to the neighborhood. She is shut down really, really well by Garrett's companion from the Hill.

Weird Detectives: Recent Investigations

Some of my favorite "Urban Fantasy" authors were included, and I was happy to read stories by some I hadn't been exposed to before.

Visitation Street (Dennis Lehane) This is easily the best novel I have read all year. The prose is colorful and consuming, the plot complex, and the imagery astounding. It has been a long time since I was able to use this cliche: I couldn't put it down!

True Love Very happy with this first book of a new trilogy, and can't wait for book 2. Without giving too much away, one of the main characters is the descendent of some other beloved Jude couples, and "the one who can tell the twins apart" still runs in the family!

This is the Way the World Ends The book's main fantastic idea has to do with the nature of the people who conduct the trial of the nuclear holocaust's survivors. The reason these people are genuinely fantastic is that Morrow doesn't even attempt to explain in realistic terms how they come to be or what rules govern their abilities. He says that they're a strange consequence of a species extinction event, and that they "gain the continent." But the explanation Morrow does give establishes the book's satirical thrust. Contrary to Mills, these people are not aliens. If they were simply aliens, they would be science fictional not fantastic. Indeed, Morrow has a character say at one point that aliens might be observing the trial, and I would have been satisfied if they had turned out to be aliens or the work of aliens.

The Tangerine Killer (Sam Weber Investigations) This book is super well written, getting you to feel what the characters are feeling, a sign of a great writer. None of the characters are cute and cuddly but the heroine shows great strength while facing her past and an uncertain future. An excellent read for anyone into mysteries and dark thrillers!

The Shadow Year I really enjoyed this book and it's complex characters and I like books that I cannot predict what is going to happen which I tend to try and do as I go along and get quite disinterested in predictable books, well I thought I had this books' ending sorted BUT not so!! Very surprising !!! A good book. Would recommend.

The Glass God (Magicals Anonymous) This series is just wonderful, and this book is excellent! If you haven't read any of the books in the series, read at least the first one, Madness of Angels, and the fifth one, Stray Souls, before you read this one, If you have read the other books, Matthew Swift, the Midnight Mayor, has gone missing, and it's up to Sharon Li, Shaman, to find him. All the wonderful characters from Stray Souls are helping out as well.

The English Girl I burned through the pages of this book, wanting to find out what happens next. This would be a perfect book for a long airplane ride, or equally while lounging on the beach. My only warning is that once you read this one, you'll likely be picking up the rest of Silva's books in the near future.

The Disappearance at Pere-Lachaise: A Victor Legris Mystery The whodunit is a device to bring late nineteenth century Paris to life in what is a super historical. Victor is like the period as he makes his inquiries he meets a world of foreign delights since Paris is the cultural capital of the world during that era. Fans who appreciate a deep look at a period through its fine arts but also wrapped inside a taut mystery will want to join Monsieur Izner on his fabulous guided tour of the Left Banke and other artsy sections of Paris circa 1890.

The Deceit

Love the dual storyline plot, usually I can guess how they come together much earlier on in the plot but this one had me guessing till the end. Gripping and addictive from start to finish. Only problem is the wait between books!

The Cuckoo's Calling This book is so well written that I suspect that some years down the road we will hear the author's name is a pseudonym of some famous writer. Lots of description made one feel like another occupant in the scene. You could feel the weather, the tension, the pain, the atmosphere in the gatherings. The Audible version had great accents. It is a wonderful mystery with a surprise ending, and I look forward to more by the same author.

The Assassin in the Marais: A Victor Legris Mystery Although the murder mystery subplot never quite solidifies, readers will enjoy the goblet run tour of Paris as Legris seems one pas behind the traveling cup while at the same time the city rocks from late nineteenth century terrorism. Fast-paced, fans and Legris will want to know why the theft as team Izner provides an enjoyable historical whodunit.

Stray Souls (Magicals Anonymous) It is a riveting, funny, wonderfully-written romp that enhances Kate (Catherine Webb) Griffin's already enviable reputation for creating new, imaginative and thoroughly enjoyable excursions in urban fantasy.

Stranded (Maggie O'Dell) The victims are not similar excepting the fact that they were in a vulnerable situation. It isn't long before Maggie realizes the killer has formed a connection with her. As to be expected, Maggie begins to figure out what is going on, but ends up finding herself in a life-threatening situation, not only for herself but also for her partner. I found it impossible to put down until I reached the end. And one added intriguing element is introduced in the possibility of a new romance for Maggie, making anxious for the next book in the series.

Stop Dead (DI Geraldine Steel)

When a successful businessman is brutally murdered, the police suspect his glamorous wife and her young lover. But when the victim's business partner suffers the same gruesome fate, and yet another body is discovered, seemingly unrelated to the first two, the police are baffled. The only clue is DNA that leads them to two women: one dead, the other in prison. With a steady stream of bodies arriving at the morgue, can DI Geraldine Steel find the killer before the killer stages another deadly attack?

Scorpion Deception One of my favorite authors. I absolutely love the Scorpion character. I will continue to purchase and read every novel of the Scorpion.

Red Notice

The story starts like most McNab adventures with a historical piece of action that introduces the main bad characters. This time there is a ruthless extermination campaign in Georgia where we meet the villain and his team of warriors, or mass murderers. And like most McNab stories the thrilling fast paced action opening provides a deep and twisted backstory that informs the rest of the novel, a meticulously executed hijacking of the Channel Tunnel.

Ready to Die (Selena Alvarez and Regan Pescoli) I love Lisa Jackson's series with Alvarez & Pescoli - the characters become real friends of the reader even though at times the reader wants to shake them, great entertainment that is light but suspenseful, can't wait for the next book.

No Way Back This book was a page turner. I could not put it down because I was thoroughly intrigued by each chapter. However I had difficulty in keeping the characters straight in my mind but I knew it would be helpful as I continued reading. I liked it better than his other books. It appeared more polished then the others and I think that a person who likes mysteries would really enjoy this book.

Murder on the Eiffel Tower In some ways more a historical thriller than an amateur sleuth, MURDER ON THE EIFFEL TOWER is in either case a terrific tale. Readers will be caught up with Victor's energy as he escorts the audience around Paris at an exciting time for the city. The whodunit is cleverly devised to provide fans with a strong mystery, but the entertaining story line belongs to the hero and his supporting cast especially late nineteenth century Paris at a time when technology is booming.

Kalimpura The Green Saga, including Kalimpura, is definitely worth the read. It has issues, and a few reviews point those out, but the world is well drawn, with detailed cities, various cultures, and a wide range of characters.

I Travel by Night Trevor is a man with faults who is trying to do the right thing, despite all the odds and his own body fighting against him. I just LOVED him, his inner fight, his outer strength...all of it. I would immediately pick up anything else Mr. McCammon chooses to write about him. I deducted .5 of a star because this is a novella and I wanted a full novel. I can only hope that there will be a full novel someday.

Hunting Eve The stakes are raised even higher in Hunting Eve as Eve battles the man who is holding her prisoner. Secrets about why Eve has been targeted come into the light, bringing Eve even closer to danger. With its cliffhanger ending, Hunting Eve sets up perfectly for the finale, Silencing Eve.

Good People: A Mystery

I pretty much read this page turner in one sitting. I loved following Glyn Capaldi and his hunches across the Welsh countryside. I was surprised, however, at how disturbing the book is at time. There are definitely some strange sex scenes that taught me terminology I wasn't familiar with.

Ghost: A John Spector Novel First off, I must say that as a fan of Wayne Thomas Batson's work, I have been anticipating this book's release for a while! And it certainly does not dissapoint! Packed full of intensity, epic awesomeness, and great story, this is a book you do not want to miss! It is an incredible ride, to be sure, and any fan of Sir Batson's previous works will not be dissapointed! I highly recommend this book, and I cannot wait for the second!

Downfall (Sam Capra) Abbott brings more members of Sam's group into the picture and conflicts between them are introduced. There is also a brief interlude where the possibility of another group watching proceedings and thinking of acting is brought up certainly for future reference. All Jeff Abbott's books provide excellent plot, fast action and characters that grab the reader's interests. We know that Sam Capra will return in a future novel and I certainly look forward to it.

Dead People: A Mystery Very atmospheric setting strongly developed and believable characters and a twisting plot line, I am looking forward to Glyn Capaldi's next adventure. This second story was rather slow in places but the ending was worth the wait. The strength of Hutton's writing is in his characters. Not sure whether he has created a Welsh Rebus yet but the parallels of the anti-hero are definitely there.

Crucible: Star Wars There is a good mix of new characters and old friends, and the book does as advertised, focusing mainly on the big three. I don't want to give anything away, so all I can say is I highly recommend this book.

Crime of Privilege This novel is a real page turner. It's well written and the characters are highly believable, with some great dialogue and dark humor. Throughout the story, author Walter Walker embeds little gems of social criticism that make his book more substantive than the usual murder mystery. Highly recommended.

Cloak & Silence (The League) Thank you Ms. Kenyon for writing Maris' story. It was absolutely awesome!!!! I'll just wait patiently for the next in the series.

City of Scars (The Skullborn Trilogy) (Volume 1) City of Scars takes place in a world known as Malzaria. Thirty years prior to the outset of the story, the world was at war with the Blood Queen, whose sole desire was destruction. The prologue gives us a look into the Rift War, as it was later called, through the eyes of Colonel Corgan Bloodwine, an officer in the Jlantrian army. Jlantria, the White Dragon Empire, is your typical empire - expansionist shiny-armored soldiers led by a demigod Empress who wields impressive magical

skills. The world, having been ravaged by the Blood Queen's war of conquest, is in the process of rebuilding when the real story begins.

Charmed Vengeance With its gleaming brass, dark wood, and spotless clockwork gears, the Vixen’s Revenge is a beautiful airship. But Noli discovers a dangerous secret beneath its polished exterior—the crew has been hired to steal dozens of priceless Otherworld artifacts. Desperate to keep her past Otherworld experiences hidden from the airship crew, Noli fears that if she doesn’t risk telling her own secrets, the stolen artifacts will be used to destroy both of the worlds she loves.

Brooklyn Girls Overall, I pretty much loved my first foray into the world of Brooklyn Girls and I'm really looking forward to reading Angie's story in Love and Chaos, the next book in the Brooklyn Girls series, which releases in 2014.

Born Under a Million Shadows The boy is a terrific observer. Through his eyes we see Afghanistan in all its contradictions. We also see the inherent conflict between devout (not fundamentalist) Muslims and well-meaning non-Muslim westerners. We see the on-going struggles of children to survive and the power of warlords. We see love that can result in marriage, love that can not and marriages arranged without regard to love.

Bones in Her Pocket: A Tempe Brennan E-Short A good, fast-paced read for all the friends and lovers of "Bones" with a very sad but also very interesting and all-tied-up ending. And once more me and some other readers will certainly ask ourselves where our world is bound to end...

Bombshell (An FBI Thriller)

Another great read. Action and dual story lines makes this a book you don't want to put down. Great series, my second favorite for rereading too. JD Robb's In Death series then C Coulters FBI Series is next. They don't get old.

Big Girl Panties This debut novel from Stephanie Evanovich (yes, related to Janet) is totally engrossing. Holly is so relatable she is just trying to overcome incapacitating grief and move on with her life. Logan hands her a way of accomplishing her goals by getting her into shape. Through their three times a week work-out sessions they become friends and start to hang out together. This evolves into a sexual relationship. But this author doesn't just leave it there. She shows how the past history of both of these lovers bears down on the relationship. They are not just friends with benefits, they have a genuine connection and they are both trying to come to grips with it. Logan's celebrity friends, with a Dom/Sub sex life, added some titillation to the story and surprisingly good advice to the couple.

Beauty and the Billionaire (Billionaire Boys Club Novel)

This author is one of my favorites. But this story absolutely threw me for a loop. Hunter's character is so lonely, attractive, fragile, yet alpha male. I rarely leave reviews. I read daily and almost never find books worthy of review. Not the case with this story. Seriously, find a few hours and READ THIS BOOK.

A Treacherous Paradise From the internationally acclaimed author of the Kurt Wallander crime novels, a powerful stand-alone novel set in earlytwentieth-century Sweden and Mozambique, whose vividly drawn female protagonist is awoken from her naivete by her exposure to racism and by her own unexpected inner strengths.

A Place Called Armageddon Each of the characters is very distinctive and the interaction between them ranges from the expected to quite a few twists and turns. All these personal threads mix in various ways and produce a lot of emotional moments, sometimes in quite unexpected places. Despite the different and often opposite interests and goals, the author is very skilled at making us care for all his main characters, including the ones who would have been so easy to depict as "evil", like Theon Lascari or the Sultan Mehmet. Of course by the same token, not everyone can succeed, so there is heartbreak galore, but there is joy too and the ending is just superb with an epilogue 7 years later, followed by one just three weeks after the end of the siege. This offers a chance at a great twist which actually surprised me though I have seen it before in a G.G. Kay novel.

A Leaf on the Wind of All Hallows: An Outlander Novella Diana's writing is great as always. It only took me about an hour and a half tops to read this novella. It tells the story about what Jerry MacKenzie was doing when he slipped thru time. Also, a small connection to Claire Randall is in the story. The only part I would have liked to see some expansion on was about his trial's in the past. It never did tell what year he landed in. I know this is a novella, so detail was not as expansive as one of her lengthy novels. There are a few twists in the end, that make you go humm, and also smile.

A Hero Rising (A New Dawn) A Hero Rising is truly one of the most remarkable and unforgettable stories i have read in a long time.

A Faint Cold Fear Sara Linton, pediatrician and part-time medical examiner in Heartsdale, Georgia, is a wonderful character. Although betrayed by her former husband, Jeffrey Tolliver, the Chief of Police, as medical examiner, she must work closely with him. In this book, she and Jeffrey seem to be moving toward one another and a possible reconciliation while trying to solve suspicious suicides at nearby Grant College. The pace of the book is excellent, the story intriguing. The twist at the end was unexpected and a real thrill. In essence, this was one book I did not want to put aside. If I could have, I would have read it through in one sitting.

A Different Time - Gateway to the West Colonel Hamilton finds a town and easily becomes Deputy Sheriff. However, he is contacted by Eve again. She pleads for his help, but he has to make a tough decision. Will he work with Eve and try to go back to the year 2130 or stay in the 1860's and be a feared law man? I cannot wait to find out. I was glad to see that the science-fiction parts weren't too "far out.

A Deceit to Die For This book was such an adventure, and I had a terrible time putting it down. Sadly I was disappointed at the end because I wanted to know when the next one was coming out. I appreciated the depth and breadth of the characters. I could relate to the many character types and appreciated that all the bad guys were not from one culture, nor all the good. This was as much as a thrill ride as The DaVinci Code.

A Custom-Fit Crime: A Magical Dressmaking Mystery Most of the characters from the previous books are back to support Harlow. Meemaw, who is a real joy is back to guide Harlow and in fact makes a quick appearance. This is a fun series with interesting and believable characters. Travel on down to Bliss Texas, y'all and visit with the friendly folks there.

A Beautiful Place to Die: An Emmanuel Cooper Mystery Malla Nunn has written a wonderfully complex story about a time that many readers need a refresher course to remember the details. Cooper is a powerful character who shows determination, inteligence and empathy.

Playing Along: Digital Games, YouTube, and Virtual Performance English | ISBN: 0199753458, 0199753466 | 2012 | EPUB | 272 pages | 4,1 MB Why don't Guitar Hero players just pick up real guitars? What happens when millions of people play the role of a young black gang member in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas? How are YouTube-based music lessons changing the nature of amateur musicianship? This book is about play, performance, and participatory culture in the digital age. Miller shows how video games and social media are bridging virtual and visceral experience, creating dispersed communities who forge meaningful connections by "playing along" with popular culture. Playing Along reveals how digital media are brought to bear in the transmission of embodied knowledge: how a Grand Theft Auto player uses a virtual radio to hear with her avatar's ears; how a Guitar Hero player channels the experience of a live rock performer; and how a beginning guitar student translates a two-dimensional, pre-recorded online music lesson into three-dimensional physical practice and an intimate relationship with a distant teacher. Through a series of engaging ethnographic case studies, Miller demonstrates that our everyday experiences with interactive digital media are gradually transforming our understanding of musicality, creativity, play, and participation.

This Town: Two Parties and a Funeral-Plus, Plenty of Valet Parking!-in America's Gilded Capital 2013 | ISBN: 0399161309 | 400 pages | EPUB | 3,4 MB Tim Russert is dead. But the room was alive. Big Ticket Washington Funerals can make such great networking opportunities. Power mourners keep stampeding down the red carpets of the Kennedy Center, handing out business cards, touching base. And there is no time to waste in a gold rush, even (or especially) at a solemn tribal event like this. Washington—This Town—might be loathed from every corner of the nation, yet these are fun and busy days at this nexus of big politics, big money, big media, and big vanity. There are no Democrats and Republicans anymore in the nation’s capital, just millionaires. That is the grubby secret of the place in the twenty-first century. You will always have lunch in This Town again. No matter how many elections you lose, apologies you make, or scandals you endure. In This Town, Mark Leibovich, chief national correspondent for The New York Times Magazine, presents a blistering, stunning—and often hysterically funny—examination of our ruling class’s incestuous ―media industrial complex.‖ Through his eyes, we discover how the funeral for a beloved newsman becomes the social event of the year. How political reporters are fetishized for their ability to get their names into the predawn e-mail sent out by the city’s most powerful and puzzled-over journalist. How a disgraced Hill aide can overcome ignominy and maybe emerge with a more potent ―brand‖ than many elected members of Congress. And how an administration bent on ―changing Washington‖ can be sucked into the ways of This Town with the same ease with which Tea Party insurgents can, once elected, settle into it like a warm bath. Outrageous, fascinating, and destined to win Leibovich a whole host of, er, new friends, This Town is must reading, whether you’re inside the Beltway—or just trying to get there.

In My Fair Lazy, she expanded her mind. Now the New York Times bestselling author gives herself—and her generation—a kick in the X, by facing her greatest challenge to date: acting her age. Jen is finally ready to put away childish things (except her Barbie Styling Head, of course) and embrace the investmentmaking, mortgage-carrying, life-insurance-having adult she’s become. From getting a mammogram to volunteering at a halfway house, she tackles the grown-up activities she’s resisted for years, and with each rite of passage she completes, she’ll uncover a valuable—if probably humiliating—life lesson that will ease her path to full-fledged, if reluctant, adulthood.

The Myths of Happiness: What Should Make You Happy, but Doesn't, What Shouldn't Make You Happy, but Does

ISBN: 1594204373 | 2013 | EPUB | 320 pages | 692 KB Happiness expert Sonja Lyubomirsky’s research-based lessons in how to find opportunity in life’s thorniest moments In The Myths of Happiness, Sonja Lyubomirsky isolates the major turning points of adult life, looking to both successes (marriage, children, wealth) and challenges (divorce, financial ruin, illness) to reveal that our misconceptions about the impact of such events is perhaps the greatest threat to our long-term well-being. Lyubomirsky argues that we have been given false promises—myths that assure us that lifelong happiness will be attained once we hit the culturally confirmed markers of adult success. This restricted view of happiness works to discourage us from recognizing the upside of any negative life turn and blocks us from recognizing our own growth potential. Our outsized expectations transform natural rites of passage into emotional land mines and steer us to make toxic decisions, as The Myths of Happiness reveals. Because we expect the best (or the worst) from life’s turning points, we shortsightedly place too much weight on our initial emotional responses. The Myths of Happiness empowers readers to look beyond their first response, sharing scientific evidence that often it is our mindset—not our circumstances—that matters. Central to these findings is the notion of hedonic adaptation, the fact that people are far more adaptable than they think. Even after a major life change—good or bad—we tend to return to our initial happiness level, forgetting what once made us elated or why we felt that life was so unbearable. The Myths of Happiness offers the perspective we need to make wiser choices, sharing how to slow the effects of this adaptation after a positive turn and find the way forward in a time of darkness. In The Myths of Happiness, Sonja Lyubomirsky turns an empirical eye to the biggest, messiest moments, providing readers with the clear-eyed vision they need to build the healthiest, most satisfying life. A corrective course on happiness and a call to regard life’s twists and turns with a more open mind, The Myths of Happiness shares practical lessons with life-changing potential.

Finland's War of Choice: The Troubled German-Finnish Alliance in World War II ISBN: 1935149482 | March 19, 2011 | EPUB/MOBI | 432 pages | 5 MB/6 MB This book describes the odd coalition between Germany and Finland in World War II, and their joint military operations from 1941 to 1945. This is a topic often missing in English, though in stark contrast to the numerous books on the shorter and less bloody Winter War. That conflict represented a gallant fight of a democratic "David" against a totalitarian "Goliath" that caught the imagination of the world. The story of Finland fighting alongside a "Goliath" of its own has not brought pride to that nation and was a period many Finns would rather forget. The prologue of this book brings the reader up to speed by briefly examining the difficult history of Finland, from its separation from the Soviet Union in 1917 to its isolation after being bludgeoned in 1939-40. It then examines both Finnish and German motives for forming a coalition against the USSR, and how-as logical as a common enemy would seem-the lack of true planning and preparation would doom the alliance. This book posits that it was mind-boggling how the highly professional German General Staff allowed itself to accept the militarily unsound and shaky coalition that resulted. The war aims were not discussed or harmonized, there were no campaign plans with tasks and missions spelled out past the initial assault, no effective main effort established, inadequate force levels, and an unsound command structure with various headquarters. Practically every rule in the book

was broken. The objective of linking up with the Finns in the Leningrad area was an important factor in Hitler opting for three main drives into the Soviet Union rather than an earlier OKH plan that called for only two. After describing the operations during and after Barbarossa, this book describes how the Finnish theater became a blind ally for the Germans. Their strongest and best army was trapped both operationally and geographically in central and northern Finland, making virtually no contribution to the war effort. The Germans could not bring to bear enough forces to accomplish their objectives without substantial Finnish assistance, and that was not forthcoming. The final chapters deal with the Soviet counteroffensive against the Finns in 1944. The Finns lost all their gains and quickly concluded a separate armistice. This left the German forces in Finland to simply vacate the territory, fighting between the Finns and Soviets alike as they tried to return to the main war. Jointly suffering 291,000 casualties, the only consolation was that the coalition had inflicted some 830,000 on the Soviets. In this book, Henrik Lunde, a former US Special Operations colonel, and the renowned author of Hitler's Pre-emptive War: The Battle for Norway, 1940, once again fills a profound gap in our understanding of World War II.

At the age of 19 she suffered a crippling back injury and was told she should give up running. She took that as a challenge and, with her Austrian boyfriend, went on to run, walk, bike, and paddle her way across thousands of miles of Europe, Scandinavia, and Africa before taking on the ultimate challenge—an unassisted crossing of the Libyan Desert. First, determine the right price for every item — not too expensive and definitely not too cheap. Whether the product is beaded jewelry or felted slippers, illustrations or tote bags, author Kari Chapin helps crafters determine cost of goods, market competition, and the pros and cons of wholesale and retail sales. If the price is right, customers will buy. Then it's on to selling. The boom in indie craft fairs and sites such as Etsy ("Your place to buy & sell all things handmade") is providing artisans with an ever-expanding marketplace for handcrafted items. Chapin demystifies every venue. She explains the guidelines that craft fairs impose on exhibitors, the typical yearly calendar of shows, and how to start a new craft fair. For the crafter interested in online sales, there are tips on styling and propping crafts for photographs and technical explanations of how the most popular Web marketplaces run. Traditional brick and mortar consignment stores are still very good options for many crafters. Chapin explains how to approach shopkeepers and build strong relationships. Wrapping everything up with media advice and tips on how to get the word out, The Handmade Marketplace is the sales and marketing bible that today's crafters need.

Why Birds Sing: A Journey Into the Mystery of Birdsong English | ISBN: 046507135X, 0465071368 | 2005 | EPUB | 272 pages | 2,9 MB The astonishing variety and richness of bird song is both an aesthetic and a scientific mystery. Biologists have never been able to understand why bird song displays are often so inventive and why so many species devote so many hours to singing. The standard explanations, which generally have to do with territoriality and sexual display, don’t begin to account for the astonishing variety and energy that the commonest birds exhibit. Is it possible that birds sing because they like to? This seemingly naïve explanation is starting to look more and more like the truth. In the tradition of classic works by Bernd Heinrich, Edward Abbey, and Terry Tempest Williams, Why Birds Sing is a lyric exploration of bird song that blends the latest scientific research with a deep understanding of musical beauty and form. Based on conversations with neuroscientists, ecologists, and composers, it is the first book to investigate why birds sing and how, and what effect their music has on other animals—particularly humans. Whether playing the clarinet with the white-crested laughing thrush in Pittsburgh, or jamming in the Australian winter breeding grounds of the Albert’s lyrebird, Rothenberg journeys to the heart and soul of bird song. Why Birds Sing offers an intimate look at the most lovely of natural phenomena—with surprising insights about the origin of music.

River House: A Memoir English | 2010 | ISBN: 0982569130 | PDF | 200 pages | 5 MB *Starred Review* Lawrence grew up on a ranch in the high desert of Oregon, where her strong, unflappable mother is content, but where her father, a surfer in a place of little water and epic winters, suffers like a caged bird. Lawrence develops a passion for rivers, and at a young age, she becomes an accomplished, seemingly fearless, worldtraveling river guide and advocate pleased with her roughing-it, transient life. Until she finds herself on the flooded, hence monstrous, Tambopata River on the border of Peru and Bolivia. Suddenly, it seems imperative that she build her own log house on her family’s land, just as her parents did. Surely this will make her father happy. Instead, he’s instructively adversarial, and her strenuous and dangerous work on the ranch caring for 40 horses and constructing her house in the bitter cold is as harrowing and demanding as any wilderness sojourn. Handy with tools and rafts, a good neighbor, and a mighty fine horsewoman, Lawrence is also adept with language, writing with arresting lucidity and a driving need to understand her father, her legacy, the land, community, work, and herself. A true adventure story of rare dimension.
