Learn From Your Mistakes and Failures. Leaders learn from their mistakes, try not to repeat them and grow from the experiences. Analyzing what went wrong in any failed operation is the best way to prevent it from happening again. Apply your knowledge and become a strategic leader. Accept Responsibility. Excuses degrade respect. Own the project you're leading and earn the respect, good and bad results, the project is under your wing. Leaders give others due credit for successes - and take responsibility for their own shortcomings and failures. Groom Your Successors. It's common sense. If there's no one coming up behind you how will you climb higher on the ladder to success? Developing leaders is essential, besides delegating responsibilities is part of leading. No one person can be "in charge" of every aspect of a job. Build a team, get everyone involved and groom your successors. Provide Direction. Achieving business goals requires hard work and collaboration. Leaders motivate employees to work toward the company's goals. Motivation requires a high investment of time and energy to learn what works for each person, developing a good team is worth the effort. Be Trustworthy. People don't give their trust easily; to earn it, you'll need to be completely honest. Luckily, it's very simple. Don't talk behind others' backs. Do what you say you're going to do. Never lie. Be Authentic. Leaders are genuine, in touch and real. Recognize your strengths and shortcomings. Develop your skills and work on your weaknesses. When you're aware, you're more powerful and therefore, can be a better leader. Embrace Self-Expression. An extension of authenticity. Ask questions, speak openly and honestly, and give praise as needed and deserved. Encourage others to do the same. Collaborate. To be a leader, you need a team. To be successful, you need a cohesive team. Good leaders provide guidance and support, are willing to get into the weeds when necessary. Leaders also help draw out and value team members' talents Exude Confidence. Great leaders have an air of confidence, make decisions quickly and are unafraid of risk. None of that can happen if you're hindered by doubt or feelings of inadequacy. Take the steps to build your confidence, which will give you greater control over your career. Join in Extracurricular Activities. Regardless of your skill level at tossing a softball, striking out in bowling or creating the "Company's Best Chili" for a cook off event, join in the company activities as part of the team. Non-work-related activities enhance relationships, allow your employees to see you as a person not just an authority figure and enable you to understand your coworkers as people as well. Be Strategic. Use your knowledge gained from successes and mistakes. Try new things. Allow team members to grow and listen. Then, plan accordingly. Being a strategic leader is as important as being a confident one.
