Speech Team Competes On October 27th the LaRue County Speech Hawks started their season in Union, KY competing in the Ryle High School Haunted Invitational. The team advanced many students into the final rounds of competition and placed 3rd out of 18 schools. Advancing to final round competition for LCHS were: Zachary Thurman ‐ 2nd Improvisational Duo with Keiren Bowen, 3rd Broadcasting, & 6th Improv Storytelling. Brian Anderson ‐ 3rd Poetry, 4th Impromptu Speaking, & 5th Extemporaneous Speaking. Christian Pope ‐ 3rd Improv Duo with Elijah Thomas, 4th Broadcasting, & 5th Improv Storytelling. Elijah Thomas ‐ 5th Dramatic Interpretation. Alison Schurfeld ‐ 5th Declamation. Sydney Cline and Claudia King 5th Duo Interpretation. According to coach Eric Cecil, “It was a strong start to the year, but there is much room for improvement. And we are so appreciative to the Alumni who joined the team as judges to help ring in the new year.” On November 3rd Larue County High School co‐hosted a swing tournament with Murray High School that promises to be one of the largest held in Kentucky during the fall semester. Head Coach Katy Cecil remarked, “The tournament was attended by over 20 of the most competitive schools in the state and featured almost 500 entries. It’s the largest tournament our school has ever hosted and our kids were up to the challenge. Our team placed 4th overall behind last year’s top three programs in the state and I am thrilled with that result.” Assistant Coach Bill Thompson went on to point out, “It is also important to note that we were not in full force at the tournament, since some of our entries aren’t quite ready yet. This year the gap among those top four slots in the state is very much narrowing in our favor.” Advancing to finals for the Hawks were: Brian Anderson ‐ 1st Place in Extemp (with 1st place ranks from all judges) and 1st Place in Poetry. Curtis Milby ‐ 1st Place in Humorous Interp. Alison Schurfeld ‐ 1st Place in Declamation. Elijah Thomas ‐ 2nd Place in Dramatic Interp and 4th Place in Poetry. Zachary Thurman ‐ 4th Place in Improv Storytelling. Maddie Lee ‐ 5th Place in Poetry. All coaches wanted to extend a huge thanks to everyone in the community who helped to make this tournament a great success. Speech parents, alumni, school staff, current students and other community members rallied around our program and we are exceptionally grateful.

LCHS Band of Hawks Last month, the Band of Hawks competed in the KMEA State Marching Band Championships in Bowling Green. The first round, semifinals, was held at Greenwood High School where the band competed against the sixteen best Class AA bands in the state. The hawks earned one of the top four scores to advance to the Finals competition that evening at L.T. Smith Stadium on the campus of Western Kentucky University.

In the end, the Band of Hawks put on another fantastic display of marching arts and pageantry to earn third place in the state. This is an incredible accomplishment for the program and district. The band has made the top four three times out of the last five years (one of those being a state championship), something of which most bands can only aspire. Please take a moment to congratulate the members of the Band of Hawks when you see them around.

Celebrating Halloween with Mrs. Clifford’s Class Today we read Big Pumpkin by Erica Silverman and performed a reader’s theatre in small groups; we talked about the life cycle of a pumpkin and dug into real pumpkins to scoop out the guts! We are going to dry our seeds to plant a few and roast a few. We also carved a jack o’lantern, lit a candle, and

turned off the lights to watch it glow. We shared candy and celebrated Caroline’s Halloween birthday with pumpkin cupcakes and treats! We have had a fun day, Happy Halloween!

HES Kindergarten explores Hinton’s Orchard Hodgenville Elementary Students enjoyed a field trip to Hinton’s Orchard. The students learned about growing pumpkins and apples, went on a hayride to the pumpkin patch, watched the machines sort the apples, saw and tasted products made from apples, played on the playground and learned how the orchard grows and sells its apples and pumpkins. They had so much fun while learning through a new experience.

Science with Mrs. Weaver’s 5th Grade Mrs. Weaver’s Science class wrapped up their weather unit with a culminating performance. Each 5th grade class was divided into groups of three: Two News Anchors and one Meteorologist. They were assigned a city to research two current events for each News Anchors and a five day weather forecast for their Meteorologist. After the research was completed they worked together to write a script for their presentation. The students wrote in their skit the setting and dialogue of their characters. This is something they have been learning in reading class. After the script was written and approved by Mrs. Weaver, they designed a poster for their Meteorologist to use. Each group then performed their skit. For extra credit students brought in coffee mugs, back drops, and/or dressed up. It was so much fun!

Learning the Basics of Letter Writing In an effort to perfect our writing of friendly letters, our class wrote letters to our favorite Disney characters and we got a letter back from Mickey today and every student got an autographed postcard! We have also written to JJ Garrett, the four year old brother of a former HES student. JJ has suffered many medical challenges and his family requested letters to cheer him up, our class added 18 letters to the nearly 1000 he received. Most recently, we wrote letters to a classmate, Haven, who just moved away. We wanted to check up on her since she moved and wish her a Happy Thanksgiving. Not to worry, we are sure to discuss not sharing any of our personal information, we use only our first name and the school as a return mailing address. We are making sure to include the date on our letter and a greeting, such as Dear… We also are working on neat handwriting and good, complete sentences so the recipient can read our mail! Finally, we add an appropriate closing such as Your Friend, and sign our name! We also have addressed our own envelopes including an accurate mailing address and a return address, just in case! I can really see an improvement in our writing since the beginning of the school year! ‐Mrs. Clifford 2nd Grade Teacher

Native Americans Pay a Visit

Kindergarten through 5th grade students at Hodgenville Elementary, studied Native American culture through doing a variety of crafts, such as weavings, jewelry making, and creating shields with Native American symbols. They enjoyed dancing, and learning about Native American music with Mr. Hughes and Mr. Walsh, as well. Before leaving for the Thanksgiving holiday students were given a drama performance by Mrs. Holt and Mrs. Butler in which they dressed in full Native American costume, shared Native American artifacts, and legends. In the 3rd‐ 5th grade classes’ one student from each group was dressed by Mrs. Holt and Mrs. Butler to join their tribe. Connor Baker was the lucky student from Mrs. Milby’s class who got to become a warrior.
