2. Don’t just rely on internet research and Is being close to a primary school important? What about aged care? real estate sites Would you rather live near water or close to a park? And how about access to public transport and sporting grounds? Do you want the buzz that comes from living in a vibrant city, or is a quieter, more connected village-style community more your speed?

Go out and spend time in the area. Visit the parks and playgrounds. Drop into one of the local cafes and talk to the owner about the community. Check out the local paper to get a sense of what people are interested in locally. Talk to some residents and find out what they like about living there.

3. Birds of a feather It’s really important to feel like you can make friends and create social bonds in the place that you live. Do the people in your preferred community have similar goals and aspirations? Will they make good neighbours?
