Neighbourhood news

A close-knit neighbourhood

The community around Fig Tree Park has grown rapidly over the past months and it has been wonderful to see the sense of belonging and connections between new residents start to develop. This new hub offers the perfect setting to host large community events like Oktoberfest, which has recently brought together over 700 people for a fun Bavarian-style afternoon, or more intimate gatherings led by residents themselves.

In this issue of the Brookhaven Neighbourhood News, we meet with a proactive Brookhaven mum whose aspiration is to meet many new families within the community, and an avid cricket fan bringing a new junior cricket program in our community. We also share photos of recently held events and highlight the generosity of our community.

Shane Harris

One of our residents, an avid cricket player, recently introduced Brookhaven to Greenbank Cricket Club to run a Junior Blaster Program on Ullman Oval’s cricket pitch.

Brookhaven is a proud sponsor of this program, and has also partly-funded memberships for Brookhaven residents. The Junior Blasters are currently running on Sunday morning from 9am to 10am until the end of November.

Tell us a bit about yourself and your first introduction to cricket?

I have been involved with Greenbank Cricket Club as an office bearer since 2010. The club was much smaller back then and we are constantly growing and attracting new players, coaches and volunteers to support the club and the programs we offer. I am also a keen player and was first introduced to cricket like most children, spending my summers playing with friends in the backyard. There is no better way to spend a hot afternoon!

What do you love most about being involved with the sport and the Greenbank Cricket Club?

I love getting involved in the club life and seeing the enjoyment that cricket brings to our juniors. It is so rewarding to watch them grow through the sport from improving their own technical skills to embracing the cricket team spirit.

As a player, I love the community, the comradery and competitiveness. It’s all about just having fun and trying your best for your team.

What is the Junior Cricket Blasters program all about?

The Junior Blasters program is designed to get children started in cricket, teaching them the basic skills to play the game and developing their physical fitness and fine motor skills, all while making new friends.

What is Level Zero and what skills will the program focus on?

The Level Zero Junior Blasters program is aimed at kids aged 5 to 8 years old that are new to cricket. They will learn the necessary skills used in cricket through fun game-based activities. The focus is on learning to bat, bowl, catch and field, all while having a lot of fun.

What are the other programs offered? And who are they best suited to?

Once a child has the basic skills, they can sign-up to a 6-week course (generally after school) called Master Blasters to further develop their technical skills and prepare them for their first game. They will then be ready to join a team and play against other children of a similar age and skill level in your local region. These games are usually held at a local club on Saturday mornings.

AND THE BROOKHAVEN MUMS

From little things big things grow

On any given Friday, you will find a growing group of mums gathering at the Brookhaven Bean Café, bonding over shared experiences while enjoying a cup of coffee. What started as a casual hang out with a handful of new mums has grown to a community of more than fifteen, in just a few short months.

Primary school teacher, Mikaila and her husband Damon, moved to Brookhaven just three years ago and have since built their dream home and welcomed their first child – baby Leonardo. As Mikaila had Leonardo during the peak of COVID lockdowns, she came to rely on their neighbours and friends – their “Brookhaven Family”.

The group started when Leonardo was a couple of months old with a post on the Brookhaven Mothers Group on Facebook. “We all felt really vulnerable about the prospect of meeting new mums and not knowing anything about each other… but it has been the most rewarding experience” Mikaila explained.

With routines established, the mums now branch out beyond Brookhaven Bean. The crew organise afternoon walks, expeditions to new cafes and swimming lessons, paint and sip sessions and

occasionally a mum’s night out. Mikaila has also been working to bring new programs and activities to the community. She has plans for nature play sessions, music mornings, mums and bubs group fitness, identity workshops and more.

It is all about creating a support network and sense of belonging for these Brookhaven mums. Community minded individuals like Mikaila and the initiatives they choose to champion is what makes Brookhaven so special.

Meet Jayden Santa Claus is coming to Brookhaven

One of our young residents, Jayden, who has autism spectrum disorder, overcame his fears in his quest to make a difference for his school. Jayden was overwhelmed by the community’s generosity as he walked the streets of Brookhaven, door knocking to raise funds for his school fun run. Congratulations to Jayden for being Mount Warren State School’s top fundraiser with a whopping $3,336 raised. Jayden and his family are very proud of this achievement and are appreciative of everyone’s contribution and support.
