Welcome to paradise

Promoting Fraser Island’s stunning (but still relatively unknown) scenic spots? It’s a tough job, but someone’s got to do it! We’ve hosted American TV Shows, British royalty, Chinese superstars, MAFS honeymooners, and adventure seekers from around the world, and we’re yet to meet a guest that this island hasn’t impressed. (Although Chris Hemsworth still hasn’t visited … please help send him our way!) In today’s busy world of technology, the chance to disconnect and go WILD on the world’s largest sand island is more appealing than ever, and we know you’ll enjoy exploring Fraser’s untamed paradise just as much as we all do.

Wild

fraser island is mother nature’s playground Wander through the lush palms, giant king ferns and soaring satinays of Pile Valley, as sunlight streams through the towering canopy, and pure water floats silently along the creek. Central Station is the historic heart of Fraser, flourishing with centuries-old trees, and trunks broader than you can hug your arms around. It is the only place in the world where rainforests grow from the sand at elevations of more than 200 metres, and is one of the many natural phenomena unique to the island. Inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list in 1992, the ever-changing sand scape of Fraser Island is home to a unique and diverse range of flora and fauna – notably, the most pure strain of dingoes in Australia.

14

These furry friends have become an island icon, often spotted amongst the scrub, or trotting along 75 Mile Beach. They have happily co-existed with tourists for years, just remember to follow the dingo safety advice at the resorts. Birdsong fills the air on Fraser, with 354 migratory and coastal species recorded on the island. Honey eaters, eagles and Kingfishers are frequently spotted around the resort’s wallum and heathland areas – a delight for nature lovers! Sea turtles, stingrays and dugong glide through the waters of the Great Sandy Strait, and armies of soldier crabs scuttle along the western shore. Come nightfall, the sounds of nocturnal species come alive, with rhythmic ribbits of acid frogs echoing in the wetlands, and the gentle coo of owls from high in the treetops.

FAST FRASER FACTS - Fraser Island’s satinay trees were used to rebuild the London Docks after WW2 – and even lined the banks of the Suez Canal. - 4.2 million litres of water flows from Eli Creek into the ocean every hour – float to your heart’s content!

A World Heritage wonder: December 2017 marked the 25 year anniversary of Fraser Island’s World Heritage-listing.

striking colours

The most pure strain of dingoes in Australia reside here, with an approximate population of 200-300 on the island.

- The Pinnacles are comprised of 72 different shades of red, orange and yellow sands.

Half of the world’s freshwater perched dune lakes are found on the island, over 100 to be exact!

- Silica sand acts as a filter, giving Lake McKenzie’s ombre, aquamarine hues their remarkable clarity.

Lake Boomanjin is the largest perched dune lake in the world, also right here on Fraser.

TAKE ME THERE

Touring Fraser Island CHAMPAGNE POOLS

Fraser Island had been on Lauren’s

bucket list for years.

The lively introduction and warm welcome from Craig, our tour guide, quickly let everyone know that we were in for an entertaining day ahead, and we’re advised to strap in and enjoy the bumpy ride. We descend down the steep sandy road, aptly named ‘the rollercoaster’, as the bus traverses the tracks across the island … the 4WD action begins! Before long, we arrive at Lake McKenzie; a perched dune lake, fed entirely by rainwater and perfectly encircled by pristine white silica sand. Early morning calls for a slight cloud cover, giving the water a deep blue tone. Suddenly, the sun breaks

16

through the clouds, and a bright aquamarine hue emerges from the glistening depths. It is simply stunning – even more so than the pictures that you see. Taking in my surroundings; a man paddleboards far out on the lake, children play in the shallows, and couples walk hand-in-hand. The untamed nature of Fraser Island calls to the spirit of everyone. Next stop: Central Station, where we learn about the logging history of the island, and explore the remnants of the small village of settlers who once lived here. As we enter the rainforest, the sound of birds come alive, the creek shimmers, and sunlight streams through the lush canopy of palms. Weaving our way along the trail, we’re met by the spectacular Satinays – once one of the island’s most popular exports, these survivors stand strong after 500 years.

Every year, the humpback whales stop to frolic in the calm waters off the Fraser Coast during their annual migration. The sheltered sanctuary allows mothers to nurture their calves, and teach important life skills, whilst the curious adolescent males, or “people watchers”, inquisitively approach the boats. Measuring up to 16 metres in length with an average weight of 30,000 kilograms, watch in wonder as these oceanic giants launch out of the water in a playful breach, wave their pec fins, and make a splash in spectacular style.

THE FLYING FAMILY Gerry Geltch is the airline’s owner and head pilot – treating passengers to scenic flights over one of Queensland’s most remote and spectacularly beautiful destinations almost his whole life. And it’s more than just a day-job; it’s been engrained in him from an early age. Aviation is a passion that runs in the family, carried over three generations. It began in the mid-seventies, with Gerry’s father. He flew some people up from the Central Coast of NSW, landed on the beach and thought ‘this is for me’. He never looked back. Gerry started to fly planes himself in the late 80’s, although casually mentions that he’s been steering airplanes since he was around 3 years old. Start em’ young, they say. Fast forward to today and the tradition is as strong as ever, with Gerry’s son Troy also a pilot for the airline. “I can’t wait to hand the business over to my children in 20 or 30 years’ time, it’d be fantastic to keep it in the family”.

You need to see the sights on the ground, but you’ve gotta get up in the air for the whole picture.

With a love of the local landscape, and eager to showcase everything Fraser Island has to offer, they’ve created a ‘Fly ‘n’ Drive’ tour – an epic way to experience the island’s top spots in a day. One of Gerry’s favourites: Red Canyon, or as it’s more commonly known, The Pinnacles Coloured Sands. A place dear to Gerry’s heart, it was also one of his father’s most loved spots, and the place where he married. Featuring 72 shades of red, yellow and golden coloured sands, its striking formation is a natural wonder along the eastern coast.
