n 2001, the Nederlander family celebrated 40 years of presenting Broadway shows at the Fisher Theatre. That year, Harry Nederlander joined with Wayne State University’s Maggie Allessee Department of Theatre and Dance to create an endowment. Named after Mr. Nederlander’s mother whose warmth and hospitality was appreciated by the stars that performed at Nederlander venues since the 1920s, the Sarah Applebaum Nederlander Visiting Artist Award created a fund to bring award-winning Broadway producers, actors, musicians and designers to Detroit providing insight and inspiration for future generations of musical theatre artists. Since its inception, many well-known Broadway talents have been honored with an Apple Award including Neil Simon, Stephan Schwartz, the late Elaine Stritch and, most recently, Garth Fagan. This season, Broadway In Detroit is honored to be able to join the University in honoring legendary costume designer William Ivey Long with an Apple Award while his Tony Award-winning designs sweep the stage of the Detroit Opera House in Rodgers + Hammerstein’s Cinderella. Mr. Long receives the award during a private reception on Thursday, February 18. During his visit to Detroit he will also meet with theatre design students and staff from Wayne State University. Mr. Long has a long list of incredible accomplishments including 15 Tony Nominations and six Tony Awards for Cinderella,

friends, Harden-Curtis and the Cinderella family! @mrjohnyi. RICHARD RODGERS + OSCAR HAMMERSTEIN II (Music, Lyrics & Original Book). After long and highly distinguished careers with other collaborators, Richard Rodgers (composer, 1902–79) and Oscar Hammerstein II (librettist/lyricist, 1895–1960) joined forces in the early ’40s to create the most successful partnership in the American musical theater. Oklahoma! (1943), the first Rodgers & Hammerstein musical, was also the first of a new genre, the musical play, blending Rodgers’ sophisticated style of musical comedy (which he had perfected in a 25-year partnership with lyricist Lorenz Hart) with Hammerstein’s innovations in operetta (conceived in collaboration with such composers as Sigmund Romberg, Vincent Youmans, Rudolf Friml and Jerome Kern). Over the next 16 years, R&H wrote eight more Broadway musicals: Carousel, Allegro, South Pacific, The King and I, Me and Juliet, Pipe Dream, Flower Drum Song and The Sound of Music. They wrote one movie musical, State Fair, subsequently adapted to the stage, and one for television, “Cinderella.” First broadcast live with Julie Andrews in 1957, remade with Lesley Ann Warren (1965), and again with Whitney Houston and Brandy (1997), R&H’s Cinderella made her Broadway debut in 2013. DOUGLAS CARTER BEANE (New Book).
